Amy Adams in Roland Mouret at the 2014 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards

Posted on January 17, 2014

This is a little different:

“American Hustle” star Amy Adams attends the 2014 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California in a Roland Mouret dress accessorized with Neil Lane jewelry.

She must be having a cape moment, because she wore a massive one to the Golden Globes and now she’s sporting this strange little sorta-but-not-really-a-capelet dress.

GEEZ. We’re actually struck dumb. We criticize her so much that we’re afraid to say anything.

We don’t know… there’s nothing wrong with it, but it’s not doing it for us. And we feel bad, because Amy Adams is one of the few people we cover whose style we just can’t seem to get a handle on. She’s gorgeous and she puts a hell of a lot of effort and thought into her looks, but it never sets us on fire and we can’t point to why. It really comes down to a taste thing. She likes to wear things that we don’t much like. That’s it.

We really like the shape from the front, but we pretty much hate it from the back, especially with that focus-pulling visible zipper. We’re not loving the faux bra straps. The color’s not doing it for us either. We think the right color could instantly make this look more sophisticated, but we’re not sure what the color should be. And while we’re happy to see her hair down, since she defaults to a Kidman-like pulled-tight look too much for our tastes, this one’s looking a little Grand Ol’ Opry circa 1972 to our eyes.

The fabric reminds me of drapes at a chintzy motel and the exposed zipper ruins everything.

    • demidaemon

I despise exposed zippers in general and this one is just awful.

      • Evan

Yes. I do like the draping and shape of the dress though.

    • Lorelei_D

You’re thinking of barkcloth. I like it… except for the bra straps.

      • YoungSally

I agree — I think it is a silk cloque….although in some photos it looks a bit like a boucle (or cheap drapes)

        • Evan

Maybe it just doesn’t photograph well?

  • Akemi

Everything below that capelet thing is flawless, but wow is it ever hideous from the back.

    • TheDivineMissAnn

Agreed. That exposed zipper destroys that dress.

      • Yeah, I was all “It’s kind of cool” until I saw the back.

    • Vtg Fashion Library

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde dress, but damn does it show off her figure beautifully. I just love her.

  • Never match your belt to what could be your bra.

    • Kent Roby

I was about to write basically the same, imagining her stylist throwing a black ribbon around her waist to try to make the exposed bra strap look intentional.

  • I actually like it quite well from the front. The back looks unfinished and pinned together. Those darned one-day challenges ….

    • Sam Smith

Exactly, we need a back shot. From what I can see it looks weirdo from the back. I’m also not sure about the bra strap effect.

  • newleaf1

I rather like it. I love it when a starlet defaults to a look that isn’t all skin. Don’t like the bra straps though – that really looks like a mistake.

  • Aidan B

Turn-around fug. I was prepared to like it, maybe even defend it, until she turned around. WHUT.

    • Lizzyisi

Right! I think the fabric–while not the best choice of color for her–is gorgeous. The shape of the dress from the front–and even the side–is lovely and the stitching detail at the waist–if not the bow belt–is lovely. But that back is awful–the hideous exposed zipper just looks lazy in this silhouette with that shoulder detail and the straps are fighting the shoulder line.

  • Sobaika

The back is UGLY and negates anything pleasant about the look at first glance.

  • altalinda

I like it all except that exposed zipper.

  • MoHub

I can’t even count the number of things that are wrong with this.

  • conniemd

I think the biggest problem is the color, which clashes with her hair color. The dress would look so much better in a royal blue or turquoise.

  • schadenfreudelicious

    Scroll down fug…the back edition…

    • demidaemon

That’s turn around fug, I believe.

  • Trickytrisha

The face and hair are lovely, as usual. I do like the color and fabric of the dress and the black accents – the shoulder straps look like part of the dress to me, not visible bra straps. The back IS wonky, but this is mostly a thumbs up for me.

    • Rhonda Shore

Me too! I think she looks great, actually.

  • j_am

I just hate redheads in pink. There, I said it.

    • SugarSnap108

That’s OK. I am a redhead and never wear pink, for this reason. I feel like Pinky Tuscadaro.

  • Richard Banger

Maybe it’s time for a “If We Were Her Gays: Amy Adams” post? This girl needs it.

    • jilly_d

pleasepleasepleaseplease. We haven’t had an IWWHG post in so long and Amy has enough RC misses to warrant one!

  • Danielle

I looooooove it from the front.

  • Lilithcat

I actually quite like the dress, other than the visible bra strap and zipper.

  • hughman

The color, the “cape”, the hair – it’s all a little Mumsy at the Country Club after a few cocktails, her sweater tied around her neck falling down, her bra showing, her unfocused lustful looks at the muscled poolboy sweeping leaves off the water. “Does anyone still wear a hat?”

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

      I’ll drink to that.

  • marlie

I love her hair; I actually think it’s a pretty and classic ‘do. I sort of like the color of the dress, and I like it from the front (mostly; it’s a bit too tight), but it goes off the rails in the back.

  • ailujailuj

Pros: gorgeous silhouette on her; love the draping across the front and the arms; I like the seaming on the front bodice at the waist; I LOVE ZIPPERS – but not here.
Cons: the color is wrong for the fabric and wrong for her; do not like the black strap; do not like the cape.

  • Anna

#1) Those AREN’T bra straps and #2) they’re there ON PURPOSE? Yuck. I like it only viewed from the front and the waist down. So that’s like what, a third of the dress? Math was never my strong suit. Better luck next time, Amy.

  • SewingSiren

So is her bra showing or what? Other than that nagging question I love the dress 100%.

  • VioletFem

The main things I would change are the length (take a few inches off to keep it from dragging on the floor), the color (forrest green or royal blue), and the visible faux bra strap.

  • Janet B

I would have chosen a different color for her, the rest is fine except for the zipper.

    • @Biting Panda

I’m with you. It’s the color that’s putting me off. And visible zippers are rarely ever acceptable, outside of le boudoir.

  • In_Stitches

Great dress, great shape, it just doesn’t suit her coloring. This is a Marilyn dress; it begs for a blonde. In a deep green, should would be luminous.

  • Imasewsure

I’m still debating the fake bra straps since I’m thankful for no plunge… no illusion netting, etc. I think this dress would look better in a more muted color but maybe not… it is a head-scratcher for sure

  • MaggieMae

    I do love her eyebrows!

  • mjude

I like the dress maybe a different color.

  • Judy_S

I love it until… the zipper.

  • It’s sort of the opposite of a wedding dress – designed to look well from the front only.

  • filmcricket

I actually really like this from the front. The back is, as you say, pretty terrible. Her head looks gorgeous as usual. I’m so envious of her skin.

  • BeeBeauNYC

I just don’t think pink is a great color for redheads.

  • Diego!

OMG… Color! She looks amazing!!! It’s a pitty her make up is so so. But she improved and a lot since the Golden Globes. You rock that fucsia dress Miss Amy!

  • nannypoo

I don’t hate it. It’s refreshing not to see her boobs for a change.

  • MzzPants

This feels retro to me, but not Old Opry (lack of chiffon ruffles), more like ’50s starlet. I think Amy needs to default to ‘old school movie star’ more often. It suits her. And as stated by other commenters, it was all ruined when the zipper was revealed.

  • marcia miller

LOVE the silhouette from the front – gorgeous! From the back – not so much. That zipper is hiddy, and the way it pulls together at the top back is even worse. I personally love the color, but not necessarily on her. I still give this thumbs up; she’s werqing it.

  • MilaXX

That’s an ugly dress. Even if I was willing to forgive the stupid fake bra straps, the butt zipper killed any good will I may have be willing to spare regarding that dress.

  • procrastinatrice

I like this quite lot. She cuts a dashing figure, and looks young but sophisticated. Visible zippers usually don’t work, but this one highlights her fine backside quite well, I think.

  • Scott Cooper

The zipper and bra straps really date this, and the color clashes with her hair. Cobalt blue would have been better.

  • Ugh. The whole exposed zipper thing just needs to die. Seriously. Otherwise this look is fine. Exposed zippers look so “school project” to me…

    • bitchybitchybitchy

The exposed zipper will be added to the list of items under consideration for the fashion ten commandments: Thou shalt not make nor wear garments with exposed zippers.

      • boweryboy

Thou shalt not make nor wear granny panties under see through dresses.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

          Amen to this!

  • Dark green. And one size larger maybe. The zipper’s doing unattractive things behind her back.

  • Shawn EH

    Kinda loving it.

  • Mary229

I don’t love the dress from the back. But her face and figure are near flawless.

  • AmeliaEve

The skirt is beautiful — I love the way it drapes and the belt works with it. However, I have never accessorized my bra straps to my belt. The whole top part is kind of a mess, and then the back is just all kinds of wrong.

  • Lex

She looks horrible in that color– redheads and hot pink are not a great combo. She should try forest green or a deep teal as they would contrast well with her coloring and hair. Oh and that dress is hiddy.

  • Lilah

I like it from the front; it’s the back I can’t get behind, so to speak. Plus her make up is a little too low key.

  • Kathleen

Make it midnight blue, lose the bra straps and visible zipper, add a soft up-do and go with earrings with a touch more sparkle and I’d love it.

  • kittenwithaquip

That dress leaves me flummoxed. I just can’t understand all of the weird tucks and zippers and is-that-a-bra-straps-?. In a way I give her kudos for wearing that color, but only because as a redhead I know that most people shit kittens over a redhead wearing red or pink (or maybe that was just my weird family). I hate the color, but feel like it’s a bold choice. Not a *good* choice, but a choice that takes some lady ‘nads.

  • Sally Spannagle

I don’t think the makeup/hair match that dress at all

  • Tracey Magyar

I’m the odd lady out here…I really like the dress.

  • formerlyAnon

It’s got too much the air of the grande dame about it for her. Also, the stupid limp little black bow does nothing for the belt.

  • boweryboy

I’m dumbstruck by this because her looks are usually so severe. Not severe in a Jada Pinkett-Smith fierce kind of way, but severe in an Aphex Twin come to daddy I will eat your soul kind of way.

Judging by the grimace on her face I don’t think she’s feeling it at all. Go home, put on something tight, and pair it with your trademark sky high heels. You’ll feel better.

  • SorayaS

I think it’s fabulous and that her hair and makeup are wonderfully done (overdone hair and makeup with that pink would have been way to Barbie). Hate the exposed zipper.

  • a_liking

I think she looks like a superhero and it makes me kind of love it.

  • LeelaST

Love the dress from the front, hate the straps, don’t mind the color but I said “Barbie” at first glance – and with her hair color?!. HATE it from the back – that zipper! She needs to find a way to balance her girl-next-door-wholesome look with movie-star glamour. I actually think this is a great silhouette – imagine it in black or silver!

  • Therese Bohn

Don’t like the zipper or straps, but I love the cut, the sleekness, and the capelet.

  • DominoEstella

This fabric is weird. It reminds me of the vet wrap I used on my dog when he injured his foot. Sticky gauze.

  • Michele Morningstar

I actually like it… a whole lot! But I couldn’t say why, really.

  • KT

I really like the dress, and I think it’s super flattering on her while still being a bit unique. So big ups for all that, but I agree that the color is off, and I think the hair and makeup are all wrong for this dress, which adds to the awkwardness. Once again, so close, but no cigar.

  • It’s making her look a bit top-heavy. My first thought was “statuesque”, but the longer I look the more unflattering adjectives jump to my lips.

  • ms_kat

The front is not so bad, but the back is terrifying. It makes her look wider than she is, the exposed zipper doesn’t lie correctly and it looks like fabric clothespinned.

  • quiltrx

I love it from the front–from the back it’s just confusing.

  • GillianHolroyd

Absolutely lovely from the front. Gorgeous hair. Just don’t turn around.

  • cocohall

She doesn’t HAVE an established personal style. Which may be exactly why she is such a good actress and able to morph from Disney princess to crime scene clean up queen to 70s hustler. However, she is more conventionally “pretty” than say a Meryl Streep or other character actresses, so we expect her to somehow also compete fashion-wise with leading ladies like Charlize or Nicole or Angelina, who all have a fairly strong sense of their “brand” and what works on their bodies. I do like this better than what she had on at the Golden Globes. The color suits her better as does the silhouette.

  • Beth

While agreeing that the dress has problems, I think that it’s her expression, a certain tension, that makes so many of her looks dubious. Look at the picture of her smiling – she looks great!

  • Sunraya

For me, she doesn’t look like an actress. She looks like a teacher – and I am a teacher, so I am not knocking teachers, but most teachers don’t look like Hollywood. I think she has a pretty common look and face, so she just doesn’t POP!!! Pretty, but not spectacular and I don’t think she has that “movie star” charisma many of them have. Just a pretty somewhat ordinary looking woman.

  • AnnPopovic

It should be green. And on someone else.

    • AnnPopovic

Also…the exposed zipper trend needs to end. HATE it.

I don’t think pink works on most redheads

  • It’s very 1940’s in the front and 2013 in the back. Death to the exposed zipper.

  • Jacob Bowen

I don’t really like ANYTHING about this dress, but the creases on the front are something that bother me. It looks like her neckline was too her so they fold it down and then it started sliding and pushing more fabric down… 🙁

  • unbornfawn

Not her color. Like her hair very much.

  • PeaceBang

It was perfectly swell from the front. Turn around and “Whoops, I Made a Mistake In Sewing Class.”

  • Honestly, I think you’ve really nailed it: so much effort, so little payoff. She’s a gorgeous lady, why can’t she get it right?

  • Lilyana_F

I don’t get the exposed zipper on a dress like that… I really love Amy, but she just like wearing stuff I don’t care much about.

  • filmcricket

It’s the first thing I thought of, I must confess. I like it better than JLaw’s dress though, from the front anyway.

  • filmcricket

Absolutely my favourite thing she’s ever worn. Slinky and sexy, but with enough chill in the colour, jewels and hair to keep that kind of aloof aspect she seems to favour. Love it.

  • shelley514

From the look on her face, I don’t think she liked this dress so much herself.

  • Bklynface

I don’t hate it at all. It does nice things for bingo wings( not that the Enchanted Princess has any- was thinking more about me!). Can she please send it to Lena Dunham to cover the tatts

  • sagecreek

It’s official, this is the year of the Weird Necklines.

  • I, for one, would kill to look half as good as Amy Adams. I would especially kill for my hair to be like that jut once a year. I very much love the Garden Party vibe of the dress. I agree, though, on the unflattering zipper.

  • moxie_lady

I ADORE this dress. It would be perfect if not for those faux bra-straps. They pull focus from the beautiful neckline. I also love this color on her – redheads in pink are a total win, in my book.

  • E. D.

    Looks like a bedspread.

  • Gatto Nero

The capelet design looks oddly unresolved somehow.
And I’m tired of the exposed zipper trend. Cheap.
But the color and soft fabric work for her.

  • AnnaleighBelle

I think it’s beautiful and she looks beautiful in it. I like the bra straps.

  • Reality TV Casting

this would have been GORGEOUS in ice blue

  • allcapsERINN

I quite like it! It looks like nothing I’ve seen before. As for the back, I need to see a better shot of it before I damn it to hell.

  • scoobynacks

The way that fits her boobs coupled with the straps, it looks like she decided to wear a black sports bra under her dress.

  • French_Swede

    I think it’s A-MAYYYY-ZING!!!

    She looks fierce and fabulous.

  • EEKstl

If she ditched the bra straps, the dress was not cray cray from the back, and she put on more eye makeup I’d say sure. But as is…not so much.

  • Jecca2244

    i loved this! so different.

  • Dan_In_NYC

I love this too… my quibble is the visible zipper too, but it’s an in.
