Amy Adams in Juan Carlos Obando at the Palm Springs International Film Festival

Posted on January 06, 2014

While Miss Nicole Kidman is off fulfilling her Princess Grace duties, Miss Amy Adams will be stepping in to fulfill her Nicole Kidman duties.

“American Hustle” star Amy Adams attends the 2014 Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala in a Juan Carlos Obando halter dress paired with Casadei pumps and Cartier jewelry.

C’mon,  girl. This is getting old. We know you want an Oscar so bad you can taste it, but impersonating an Oscar winner isn’t the way to win one.

So help us, Emma Stone, don’t you DARE start pulling this shit on us.

  • Weirdly unflattering, somewhat aging, and totally obliterates any semblance of a shape. And gurl, we KNOW you got one.

  • tallgirl1204

She looks fabulous, in a slightly 70s disco Las Vegas con artist kind of way, which is appropriate for her movie, no?

    • gabbilevy

      I’ll buy that.

    • ConnieBV

Yeah, I kind of dig it, but I wish she had let her hair down. Her waist looks tiny.

  • BayTampaBay

The dress look better on the model!

    • kimmeister

In the model’s favor, the polka dots don’t match her skin, while on Amy they do. In Amy’s favor, at least she doesn’t have all of that bric-a-brac hanging down from the belt.

  • Judy_S

It looks great swooshing on the model, but a bit dull just standing there being too long. On the other hand, as someone else just noted, appropriate for the role on behalf of which she is doing the dance.

  • Jecca2244

why don’t they dress her like her American Hustle character….she looked amazing.

    • leahpapa

She’s in the Jessica Pare bind: she’s a certified smokeshow in the costuming but can’t be overly associated with the character or it’ll look desperate and tacky. Which is a shame, because girl werq’d that entire “American Hustle” wardrobe like a boss.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

She did own her wardrobe in “American Hustle” didn’t she?

    • Mary229

Because if they dress her like her American Hustle character, crappy people will call her a whore. Is it right? No. It’s awful. The Academy is made up of old, conservative white men. They love to watch their babes on-screen but still judge them like mad and hold them to ridiculous standards when they are out in public. Welcome to the patriarchy of Hollywood.

  • @Biting Panda

    (for models in motion only)

  • mmebam

    I don’t think she’s feeling it.

  • Agreed with all the “model in motion” comments. If she power walked that red carpet with a minion behind her with a fan, it would have been the start of a legend.

  • KT

Disagree, I like this on her! Definitely a shake-up of her usual shit, though it’s still not quite as bold as I would like from her. Still — progress!

  • In_Stitches

Maybe it’s just because of the fabulous FACE she’s serving with it, but I’m loving it. Her attempts at generic sweetness always bore me; this wakes me up.

  • Mary229

I honestly don’t get the Kidman commentary here as this doesn’t look like Kidman at ALL to me? It looks like a fun 70’s dress that matches the role she is there for. I don’t love the severe hairstyle but I do love the darker hair and I hope she keeps it. Weren’t people bitching that she never wears prints? So she wore a cute print and now that’s not right, either? LOL It’s fun to me minus the hair which I think should be looser. She was so sexy and fabulous in Hustle.

    • ChiliP

I mostly agree- this is a fun look for her. If the hair was less severe, and the lip a little punchier, I would give her a Werq.
I also think she was FABULOUS in American Hustle, even though the movie didn’t thrill me that much. Way more memorable than Jennifer Lawrence, imo (whom I adore, so not a knock against her- Adams just stole the show for me).

      • Mary229

I would have done a red lip too. Good point. My husband and I both liked American Hustle a great deal mainly because of the acting. We both agreed that Bale and Adams were the best. Amy was the emotional soul of the film. She was a lost soul and yet totally in control. Brilliant. My husband and I disagreed on Jlaw. I thought she was solid in the part though I still felt she was too young and I was very aware that she was “acting.” It felt very clear that Russell re-structured the film to try and play on Jennifer Lawrence’s stardom. Meanwhile, Amy just kind of showed up and hustled everyone by being a more raw figure in the middle of absurdity. My husband thought Jlaw was the weak link. I wouldn’t go that far. I liked her. I also liked Cooper in the film which shocked me bc I usually think he’s not that great….

        • ChiliP

I agree with your assessment. Adams and Bale seemed the most “in character” to me, although I thought all of the performances were solid. I wouldn’t call JLaw the weak link- she’s talented and always good in her roles- but after watching the movie, I was a little puzzled by all the hype around her performance. I love her, so I’m not trying to knock her down, but I do wonder if all of the praise is somehow related to her being the next “new big thing.”

          • bitchybitchybitchy

I liked JLaw in “American Hustle”, more so than Adams, although I agree that Amy Adams is very good. I enjoyed the look back at the 70’s, and think that Jeremy Renner’s hair should get special mention at Oscar time.

  • leahpapa

Is it me, or does it look like that step-and-repeat rode to the event crumpled up in the trunk of a limo? Step-and-repeat, you are pulling a Jolie/Pitt if I ever saw one.

  • marlie

I sort of like this. It’s very 70s. And I may be in the minority, but I’m not getting that strong of a whiff of Nic here. ETA: But I’ve never liked this really severe hair on Amy.

  • mjude

I think she is a pretty girl, but she is always confusing me with her looks. does she have a “look”?

  • Scimommy

Emma Stone has to be in the running for an Oscar first. Not quite yet, shall we say?

  • msdamselfly

I think she looks darling- a personal best. The polka dots add girlyness and innocence to an otherwise sexy dress.

  • TAGinMO

I love this look. Only downside is she can’t walk the step-and-repeat with a wind-machine.

  • It might be Palm Springs, but it’s still January. A bit much, no?

  • EEKstl

Hair is too severe and need that hem even be mentioned???? Yet…I like this on her. It’s Nicole Lite but it works. It would better with Sydney Prosser hair, tho…

  • Just Me

In this dress, Iman would command the winds to show off her fabulous legs as she turned and sold the garment like the rent was due. One can dream…just sayin”

  • filmcricket

Don’t like the hair, but I enjoy the dress. If she loosened up the hair the look’d be a lot of fun.

  • random_poster

I’m not getting Nicole Kidman. Amy seems too girl-next-door for that…she comes across as very accessible, where I see Nicole as aloof. Aside from the hair, I think Amy looks great.

  • ballerinawithagun

In the local paper there were several shots of her. She looked distinctly different in each one. Why does she wear this uptight hairstyle when her hair is her crowning glory? As a friend’s mother used to say. She is at an awards show not playing a secretary. This dress could be fun if she didn’t look so stiff.

  • nannypoo

I love it. I’d like to see softer hair, but I think it’s great. It’s -12 degrees here so I’d rather see some coats, but I suppose it’s not always about me.

  • ojosazules

I don’t think Nicole would wear this. Amy looks great.

  • Trickytrisha

Totally do not understand the Kidman reference. I mean, I know what Uncles are saying but I don’t get why. Red hair? Celebrity posing on red carpet? I can’t see Nicole in this dress, ever. So perhaps some nice BK can explain it to me, since I appear to be too dense to make the connection.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I do see a tiny reference to Kidman-in the very unlined forehead, and eyes-but, it’s a slight reference.

      • Trickytrisha

Ah, thank you. I suspect the smooth forehead is the key here.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

Anytime-that’s what we BK’s are here to do!

  • Sam Smith

I’m not crazy about the hair, but I like the dress and to me this is much more of a look than she normally rocks.

  • Imasewsure

Overly Kidman for sure but not awful (except the length). Agreed 100% with the BK who proposed that this dress should be shipped to Iman immediately though

  • Tatiana Luján

I love and want that dress. I whish she’d hemmed it.

  • MilaXX

So devoid of personality I had to double check it was the same dress the model is wearing

  • NYCGlamourpuss

This is a rather dull look for her – she can do better.

And can I tell you how much I squee’d over every single outfit she had on in “American Hustle”. When she showed up in that classic DVF wrap dress, I went bananas. My boyfriend has had to listen to me go on and on about DVF being a complete goddess, so when Amy Adams was up on the screen in the wrap dress, I had to explain to him why I was flipping out.

    • housefulofboys

I had the Vogue pattern for the DVF wrap and made several of them around that time. Awesome, flattering, ground-breaking dress.

      • NYCGlamourpuss

Mmmm hmmm, yes m’aam, you’re right about that.

  • VioletFem

    This is Zoe Saldana’s dress.

  • flamingoNW

    I think she looks fabulous

    • Shawn EH

That skirt is pretty awesome for being so resort-y.

  • decormaven

Hair too stiff and jewelry too tame. Too bad!

  • ThaliaMenninger

I think she’s trying to do an updated 70s look (with the halter and all), not really going for a Kidman. I would probably loosen up the hair, although I admit I wore my hair like that a lot right around 1977-78, but otherwise I think she looks lovely.

  • ashtangajunkie

I like the dress in motion, on the model, but it’s a big ol’ snooze on Ms. Adams here.

  • Tracy_Flick

The dress looks like something on display at Joann Fabrics, and the hair looks like it hurts.

  • rondele

The model’s is in blue, right? Amy’s is black; I think that is part of the problem for me. And it’s too long. She has such pale, redhead skin (hence the Kidman comment?) that I think black is not doing her any favors here. The blue would be better, and also with softer hair, as someone else suggested. She is very beautiful, but tends to be severe in her dressing, which I’ve never understood.

  • holdstillnow

So what is it about redheads on the red carpet? Amy, Christina Hendricks, Julianne Moore, Deborah Messing and Jessica Chastain have consistently proven themselves to be pretty weak dressers in this context and I can’t really think of a ginger who gets good marks from TLo or the BKs on a regular basis.

This makes me worry for the rest of us redheads if it’s a congenital condition…

  • DominoEstella

That dress looks way better in motion, just horrible and unflattering from the waist down

  • cocohall

I’m a sucker for a polka dot. I think she looks good. Better than that weird lilac plunging number from a few weeks ago. Do the hustle, girl.

  • quiltrx

Is it wrong that I think I would love this on her as a jumpsuit? With big, blown-out hair.

  • Saturnine

“Juan Carlos Obando” rolls off the tongue so musically–I may have to use it for other things.

  • Sunraya

I like this. Nothing spectacular, but not a fail either. I hate the hair. Too severe on her!!

  • bertkeeter

Effortless and chic…works for Palm Springs!

  • kategs

My goodness you uncles are cranky today!

  • I like the dress. The hair is too severe, and I usually like severe hair.

  • formerlyAnon

    I like it.

  • Anathema_Device

Really? I like it and it didn’t make me think of Kidman at all. It is a perfect nod to the ’70s and her movie.

  • This dress needs to be in motion. At Cannes. Too bare for a January red carpet.
