Amy Adams for L’Officiel Magazine

Posted on January 31, 2014

What’s with poor Amy Adams and bad magazine cover shots? Does she not get along with fashion editors or something?

“American Hustle” star Amy Adams covers the February 2014 issue of L’Officiel magazine photographed by Mathieu Cesar.

And what’s most odd about the cover choice is the quality of the pictures inside. They’re GORGEOUS.

There’s just too much color in the cover shot, making her look garish. The B&Ws look amazing. She favors a ’40s-inspired retro style, but she should really consider looking to the sweater girls of the ’50s, because the look really suits her.

Ouch. Is both my reaction and the look she’s giving on that cover.

    • Judy_S

Wow. in the b&W she is making me think Garbo, somehow. Not the styling but the sense that somebody is there under the perfect skin, heavy makeup, and coiffing.

      • SierraDelta

My reaction to the last shot was Bacall.

        • CelandineM

In those b&w shots she can certainly teach someone to whistle.

        • Victor Beiramar Diniz

for me was totally delphine seyrig in ‘last year at marienbad’

    • KinoEye

Loving the black and white shots. The cover is just silly. It reminds me of a photo that’s hanging on my real gay uncle’s wall that I always laugh at. It’s black and white, and the woman is lying on her back biting her knuckle. She’s making about the same face as Amy though.

    • TrixieConQueso

The Black and White shots are DREAMY.

    • leahpapa

I’m getting B-movie matinee vampiress from the first pic, and not in a good way.

      • Melissa Bumbs Grant

My thought too. I felt like she was missing fangs

    • Imasewsure

I don’t hate the cover but then again, those jammies are looking pretty sweet right about now…

    • stubbornthoughts

She can work a dark lip in that B&W.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

The color shot looks like a lost Roxy Music album cover.

    • Blair Sylvester

I think the up nostril shot is kind of a terrible thing and yet they default to it a lot. When i think nostrils I think sneezing and coke I guess the second one works for American Hustle

    • hughman

I kinda get that over-saturated, “Far From Heaven” effect in the cover. My main question was WTF is with that coat? It’s like pajamas for “leave It To Beaver”.

      • quiltrx

I seldom read comments before I post, but I was scanning, muttering “surely I’m not the only one getting ‘Far from Heaven’ from this.” And here you are. And yes, that coat kind of jerked me back to reality from the pic as a whole…for whom is such a coat made?

        • ailujailuj

I did the same thing… one of my fav movies – mostly for the sets, wardrobe. julianne couldn’t have been cast more perfectly – except maybe for Miss Amy. She fits into this genre much better than trashy 70s Jersey mobster.

    • Adriana_Paula

The cover color saturation makes me think of terrifying recipe photography from the late 50s and 60s. Which I kind of like, actually.

      • Carrps

Ha! When my mom died, we had to go through all her stuff, and we found old cookbooks (especially from manufacturers of kitchen products) that had exactly that look.

      • kimmeister

Was the photography terrifying, or the recipes?

      • decormaven

You must go peruse the Gallery of Regrettable Food. Google the phrase.

        • Danielle

God bless you for this google query.

          • decormaven

Isn’t that the best? A dear poster on TWOP shared that when the first season of Mad Men aired.

    • OhSheila

i always think back to when she was on The Office, and Kevin called her Pam 2.0. They really did look alike and yet Jenna couldn’t hope to look this awesome, terrible cover notwithstanding.

    • msdamselfly

I agree. That James Dean 50′s look is gorgeous on her.

    • Tatiana Luján

I actually think her problem is that she doesn’t know what to do with her mouth when posing for pictures.

      • SugarSnap108

I agree. She’s actually making the same expression in the first B&W as she is on the cover. It’s just that the B&W shot gives her an artful angst, while the cover is kind of cray-cray.

    • http://www.djplaw.com/ Tadiana

A little lighter touch with the eyeliner would have improved all of these pictures.

    • scoobynacks

I feel like her mouth being open is just not doing her any favors in that first shot. It’s better in the B&W because there’s not that bright red lip stick to draw attention to her teeth. I’d love to see what someone’s face looked like with all that makeup on it after they’ve slept all night in those pajamas. Probably like the Joker in The Dark Knight. If you weren’t afraid of clowns before, you would be after seeing her like that.

    • Mismarker

If not for the title of this post or her name right next to her face on that cover, I would not have guessed this to be Amy Adams. The brows and eyeliner are absolutely insane.

      • Carrps

        HATE the brows.

    • Golfkat

Well, I really like the cover. And the other shots as well. I don’t really see what’s so wrong with the cover. Yes, it’s a hefty amount of colour, but that’s difficult to avoid with her colouring and the fabric. I think it looks kinda fabulous. She’s such a classic beauty.

      • Lilah

I like the super saturated color on the cover quite a lot. I think her posing is awkward. She is trying too hard with her hands. They need to be more relaxed.

    • LadyCelia

Gah! The depth of field on the last photo, with one eye out of focus is making me crazy. And not in a good way.

    • MilaXX

Love the last shot, kinda “meh” about the second, but really dislike the cover shot.

    • Jeff Warhurst

      She’s SO overrated.

    • LeelaST

      Total Elizabeth Montgomery from Bewitched.

    • jw_ny

At first when I looked at the 2nd pic, I thought Amy was about 9 months pregnant. O.o

Not really a fan of any of the shots tbqh.

      • kimmeister

Meanwhile, I wondered where her boobs went.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

      Love her eye makeup here.

    • Corsetmaker

It reminds me of my mum’s old movie annuals from the 50s. They always had those coloured up, overdone spreads.

    • crash1212

Holy cats. She should sue somebody over the cover…it’s terrifyingly awful. I like the B&W’s but not a huge fan of the overly lined lip, but it’s a pretty color.

    • HM3

I’m kind of loving the “Amy Adams–now in technicolor!” retro vibe of the cover. Respectfully disagree.

      • Pennymac

        “Technicolor!” Exactly!

    • LaSylphide

Cover photo looks like a cheap, plastic Barbie doll knockoff. PLEASE stop with the PhotoShop. B&W shots are great. Very Lauren Bacall-ish.

    • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

I have to respectfully disagree, gentlemen. The shot looks gloriously vintage. Maybe I have garish taste?

    • KT

We’re not on the same page today. I actually like the cover a lot, even though she does look slightly dead-eyed. The first B&W shot is really beautiful, but the second one looks like she has a skin disease.

    • conniemd

My problem with the cover is that it doesn’t look like her at all.

    • GillianHolroyd

Sorry, that 2nd b/w shot is a disaster. The shallow depth of field (as someone noted above) gives her mismatched eyes and that marabou puff or whatever that spiky thing is on her shoulder is giving her an unfortunate mustache and soul patch. Should have caught that during the shoot.

    • Beth

For some reason that first b&w is giving me a Tonya Harding vibe. Plus she looks like she just got told her cat got run over. Not good.

    • Jaye Tyler

She’s going for Christina Applegate’s little sister in the second shot.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

She can definitely rock a cat eye.

    • marlie

I like the cover photo, but I wish she’d had her mouth closed. My eyes keep going to her teeth, rather than her eyes or hair or even her lips. I do like the inside photos, though. This look really suits her.

    • PeaceBang

I don’t like looking up her nose in the cover shot, and the second shot has major mouth weirdness. I just saw “American Hustle” tonight and hope she wins the Oscar.

    • guest2visits

The think the cover is amazing and totally evocative of that period.

    • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

I actually quite like the blue on the cover, it suits her fine. What I abhor is the facial expression on the first B&W photo. What is it? Was she shot and her eyes are now glassy and lifeless? Or is she trying to get the food out from between her teeth with her tongue?
