Allison Williams on the “Late Show with David Letterman”

Posted on January 23, 2014

An illustration of the right time/place/person making a look work. Good style is about the person, the setting, and what they’re trying to accomplish with the look.

“Girls” star Allison Williams at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City for an appearance on the “Late Show With David Letterman” to promote the new season of “Girls” in an Elie Saab black and white color block cocktail dress paired with a black coat.

It’s all kinda boring, but everything here looks impeccable and suits her ridiculously well. There are times when you just can’t hate on a good Manhattan Socialite look; especially when it’s on the right girl for the look. She bores us on the red carpet nine times out of ten, but she looks just right on the streets of New York.

Having said that, get inside, dear. It’s freezing out and you’re barely covered.

    I like the new haircut.

  • ChaCha_70

    I can’t hate – she’s so pretty here.

  • Nancer

    That purse is fabulous!

    • JulieTy

      Alexander McQueen.

      • rage_on_the_page

        Knew it!!!

      • Nancer

If only I had that kind of budget. :[ Still, I can admire it from afar!

That’s a very big handbag for getting out of the car and going into the studio. Mine’s smaller than that and holds an umbrella, a book, a bottle of wine and my wallet.

    • alyce1213

I’d bet good money that hers is practically empty, it’s so huge.

      • Lori

I assume she has to have a fair amount of stuff in it, at least sitting in the bottom. In the close up you can see something pressing against the side and that wouldn’t happen if stuff was just rattling around in there. Of course, that doesn’t mean she needs a bag that big. It has little feet. In my book little feet push a bag over from purse to suitcase. It looks great, but it’s a carry-on, not something you take to Letterman.

Having watched the interview (which was, frankly, quite dull) last night, a good chunk of which concerned her delayed flight and difficulty getting back in time for the taping, I’d say it’s entirely possibly that is her carry-on bag. It’s a very different/better look sans coat, but you wouldn’t know it from these pictures.

          • alyce1213

To me, it looks like they’re unloading her carry-on from the back of the van. I think what she’s carrying is a very expensive Alexander McQueen “show” bag.

          • demidaemon

            What. A. Surprise.

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I love little feet on handbags! It saves the leather from getting beaten up on the Tube.

          • ailujailuj

I like the little metal feet that “clink” when you set it down. that’s serious baggage.

          • Lori

If a purse is purse size rather than carry-on size I’m fine with holding it the Metro.

    • ashtangajunkie

Your bag and mine sound very much alike. I also like to carry a snack at all times.

    • random_poster

Ability to hold a bottle of wine will be added to my mental checklist for future purchases of handbags.

      • mellbell

I have a small tote bag with shoulder straps which just fits a six pack of bottled beer. Very handy.

      • Danielle

College secret: an entire bottle of wine fits when poured into a large Taco Bell cup.

    • CelandineM

A book and a bottle of wine in your handbag, you’re my kind of gal!

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I confess it doesn’t *always* have a bottle of wine in it, but it is useful that it can!

    • DebbieLovesShoes

      Made me laugh!

  • alyce1213

I wish I could get a better look at the coat — it looks really nice, nipped in at the waist? I think I love it.

I also wish that gorgeous bag were half its size. She looks great, this is her thang.

  • ashtangajunkie

Shiny hair, nice coat, pretty shoes – I can yawn, but I can’t hate. She looks beautiful.

  • MilaXX

Nice coat, I would love it in a navy blue or red.

  • Dany

Oh my. She looks radiant and her eyes are beautiful.

I’ve found her lovely, to be honest, and I respect that she wants to be safe with her fashion so as to present an “image”. It’s very media savvy.

  • filmcricket

    WANT the shoes.

  • Sarah

The coat look is making me think of Duchess Kate. Which I guess is about right, style-wise.

    • @Biting Panda

I feel like maybe Allison grew up on the fence about acting, then Duchess Kate happened, and she was all “Well, that’s ONE job I’m guaranteed to get one day, of course there will be movies about her, let’s go for it.”

      • Sarah

Well, shiny-haired well-groomed brunettes with nice legs and fancy backgrounds do only come along once in a while, so I can see that.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Do you think she practices the accent in front of the mirror at night?

      • Lori

I thought you were going to say then Duchess Kate happened, and she was all “Well, there goes my chance to land William and end up Queen. Might as well take up acting.”

        • demidaemon

I can actually see both interpretations as possible. Considering what we know about Allison, she probably has twenty back up plans, all neurotically organized on some corkboard in her fancy condo.

  • mjude

I have to say I love the look. coat & purse thank you.

  • hughman

That bag. Dr. Prim : Medicine Woman.

    • @Biting Panda

      That’s giving me the giggles.

  • princessricky

i’ve never watched girls. is she the ‘charlotte’ of the show?

    • Aurumgirl

I have to say it’s just not a good comparison to Sex and The City. Especially since they’re all a variety of Charlotte.

      • Random Compliments

ooh, really? I’m a huge fan of Girls, but I’ve never pictured them as varieties of Charlotte. Do tell me your theory!

    • @Biting Panda

She’s more of a real life Charlotte.

  • http://twitter.com/janedonuts Jane Donuts

I have to hate. I wore this outfit to work a million times in midtown Manhattan (along with every other professional lady in NY). She’s a star. She can do better.

    • Imasewsure

That’s what I was thinking… she looks like every 30 year old lawyer in our NY office… nice but not much more… maybe the dress was fabulous underneath (but I kind of doubt it)

    • demidaemon

      Agreed.

  • Lizzy

She looks beautiful. I would be proud for my daughter to wear an outfit like that… which is something I can’t say here often. :)

  • flamingoNW

Love the coat and the bag, not so much on the shoes, especially in that weather!

  • kimmeister

I’m curious about the outfit underneath the coat. Too bad I haven’t watched Letterman in a zillion years.

  • VicD

So, she’s applying for an intern gig at Vogue?

  • Random Compliments

    I have shoe lust.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

That’s some good high end business drag. It suits her.

  • marlie

I covet her bag. And I’ll take the shoes and earrings, too.

  • sunflower

    Love those shoes!

  • Alloy Jane

Simple, but pretty. I love the shoes. And I’m not bothered by the “working woman” quality of the look. She isn’t on the red carpet, I can forgive. But what did she wear on the show? Or is this an episode that airs tonight?

  • anotherkate

I’d cut a bitch for that bag. That is all.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

    Purse-nal best.

  • ojosazules

I would never hate on a good Manhattan Socialite look, I just wish they would wear hats again.

  • crash1212

All of this is SO good. Wish we could see the dress. Want the coat.

  • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

Holy cow brother Hal, get my gun. I can see the end is near…because I actually love this on her. Those shoes are killer – and will probably kill her if she continues walking in them in that cold, snow slicked sidewalk.

  • Pennymac

I just know if I had those shoes in my closet my life would be complete.

  • lizajane1776

Love the bag, love the shoes, love everything!

  • demidaemon

To me, it looks like she is going in for a producers or writers meeting, which, considering her current status, makes this look a fail for me.

  • quiltrx

The shoes are absolutely adorable…and I like her giant bag. When she is being “wealthy broad on the street” she doesn’t come across nearly as bland as when she’s trying to impress us on the RC.

  • Diego!

I love the coat, but what caught my attention were her shoes… they are gorgeous, but.. isn’t she cold? :P

    • Gatto Nero

I guess when you’re chauffered everywhere and have to brave only a five second walk from limo door to studio, it’s doable. Plus she doesn’t want to get caught on camera on the way in to Letterman in a pair of Uggs.

  • bellafigura1

I bet that’s her make-up lady behind her with the wheelie, I’ve seen that exact thing — super tricked-out suitcase on the inside — backstage at shows…

  • Lilyana_F

Yep, can’t agree more with u, guys.

  • Nikki

Hey look, she actually uses her purse!
