IN or OUT: Allison Williams in David Koma at the People’s Choice Awards

Posted on January 10, 2014

Oh, thank God. If she didn’t do something drastic soon, we were going to be forced to skip the critiquing part of her posts and just call her a bunch of names for dressing like her grandmother. It’s the last resort of bitchy gay bloggers, darlings. It’s in the rule book.

“Girls” star Allison Williams attends the 2014 People’s Choice awards at Nokia Theatre, Los Angeles, California in a David Koma dress styled with Christian Louboutin heels and EF Collection jewelry.

David Koma Spring 2014 Collection

Honestly? We can’t even tell if we like this look on its own merits. We’re inclined to like it because it’s not as bland and middle-aged-looking as most of her ensembles tend to be, but we have a hard time praising any dress that uses string as a design element. And it’s not as if that skirt and those shoes are super-youthful. Which is fine, but dressing too old is one of her major style issues and a couple string tricks aren’t necessarily enough to make this silhouette look fresh.

But it’s definitely visually interesting, right? And she tried to do something a little edgy (if this were 1994) with her hair, so we suppose we should give her some props for pushing it a little.

It’s just that we’re not really sure we like it.

Bitter Kittens make the call:

IN! Well I like it!

OUT! Nope. She looks like a 50-year-old trying to look trendy.

Even a sparkly dress and shoes couldn’t overcome the Bitter Kittens’ annoyance with Lena Dunham’s poor posture. Y’all voted her OUT.

    • oklund

      Nah. It’s a too-safe kind of edgy.

      • NYCGlamourpuss

Exactly! That’s the perfect way to describe it.

      • Charles

It’s like you read my mind.

    • SarahVN

I actually quite like this! All the critiques are on point, but she has to start somewhere if she’s going to stop dressing like an elderly secretary. IN.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Out. What kills it for me is the shoes, that and that its JANUARY ferfucksakes. That’s a perfect lunch with the girls dress in July.

      • Emily Smith

        The shoes hurt my feelings.

      • Daisy Walker

Exactly. The dress is fine, but I don’t want to see it until the Swallows return to Capistrano.

      • another_laura

Those shoes. They are making me think of bird beaks. Not a fan.

      • conniemd

Yep. It was in a SPRING collection. There was a reason why. Out. But like the hair.

    • Kathy

I agree about the hair, and I’m not sure about these shoes with this dress. However, overall, I like it.

    • d4divine

Out…because we don’t want to encourage her to continue on her current path…say OUT until she nails it. It is the only way she’ll learn.

    • thecitysleeps

In. I think she looks amazing. That dress might be more mature but it fits her perfectly. And I love the shoes.

      • jspark

I’m thinking she has to have the more mature hemline to cover some ugly knee tattoos. That’s the only explanation I can come up with.

    • ovarB

I can’t get past the “Jon & Kate Plus 8 Gosselin” hair. Seriously, can’t even tell you what she is wearing because the hair holds me hostage. And now I’m having Seth Aaron hair flashbacks from PR Allstars.

      • SRQkitten

Out. For all the reasons ovarB said. Plus a whiff of smugness. Girl, if your father weren’t who he was, you’d probably be waiting tables somewhere still.

        • Spreecord

Another OUT. I’ve never watched Girls, I have no idea who she really is, but I do know that her public persona suggests she has the personality of wet paper.

    • Cee Layton

Hate the hair and shoes so much. The dress is so lunch with the Housewives of wherever, only in the summer, not January.

    • mcbishop

      In. Like.

    • http://www.jaimieteekell.com/ Jaimie

Out. Hem shoulda stopped at the knee.

    • Stella Zawistowski

Drop the string and the weird shoes and I could get behind this. But as is, OUT.

    • luludexter

a spring/summer dress that looks like a Project Runway design – OUT!

    • Diego!

It’s odd, but it’s an IN because she looks great and seems to be enjoying wearing this dress a lot!

    • Nancer

In. I think she looks great!

    • Nicholas

      There’s something about Allison.

Maybe that she’s actually trying? Still, she has a ways to go.

    • MartyBellerMask

Oh, I love this whole look. IN!!

    • karena10

Out. She is trying something new, but still…no.

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

      IN! Grading on a curve!

    • Clueless_Jock

      It’s a great dress. IN.

    • RedRaven617

      IN, it is an improvement.

    • Jessica Freeman

Out, mainly for the hair alone….but the shoes…good God girl. No.

    • hunt3002

Was going to say IN and forget the shoes. But then I realized that she is basically sporting the Kate Gosselin on her head and now I just can’t…

    • ojosazules

Out. The string waist is just stringy.

    • Jangle57

I guess the bottom line is I don’t like the dress. Maybe if the string art had been in the blue fabric? I’ll give her props for trying but it’s still an OUT

    • MilaXX

OUT. She gets point for trying, The color is good, but the hair is horrible and the dress should be knee length. This still does not look like a dress for a 20 something. In fact on Gawker they showed a picture of her with her dad and a few of the poster’s thought that was her husband.

    • jw_ny

      IN

Love the shade of blue, and her makeup is really pretty. The dress feels totally out of season for me, and for that I almost went out, but overall I like the look and effort. It’d be a cute dress for an outdoor wedding or summer garden party. Cut the hem to the knee and it’d feel more youthful.

    • jesuiskate

IN! It’s striking and she’s rocking it.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

IN – I want to be encouraging.

    • Cathy S

      In. I like it!

    • Angela_the_Librarian

The string elements on her ab region look awkward, but I would give an IN regardless. It’s a great color on her and I think it has enough visual elements to be interesting, but not tacky.

    • rissa42210

IN because it’s such a change and it doesn’t look terrible. the hair is terrible, the shoes are not winning me over, and i wish the hem was tight and at the knee, but it looks pretty good. the strings aren’t bad!

    • Julie Parr

Is she on her way to afternoon tea in Boca Raton?

Like the hair, think the dress is just as aging as everything else she wears. She should hire the Elle Magazine stylist for herself.

    • therealkuri

I like the dress and the shoes. Maybe the skirt could be a skooch higher on the hem, though? I think this is a look that would go better with her hair down.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Eh. She’s just dull. The dress is okay, but can she go away for a bit now?

    • Lilak

IN … but only b/c she’s one of those we’ve gotta grade on a curve — and so, points only for what this is not.

Otherwise …The hair’s floppy bit reminds me more than anything of the goth kids’ styling on South Park — though I doubt Williams’s moves as fetchingly as theirs does (if at all, from the looks of it).

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Allison needs some encouragement. It’s not perfect but it’s SO MUCH better that I’m giving her an “IN” vote despite the hair, which falls into the “what ws she thinking?” category.

    • crash1212

IN. Beautiful color on her. Shows skin without being vulgar. Visual interest is achieved. I like her hair…and her face always looks good. This is a good effort and she looks great.

    • RCH

      IN from me.

    • Violina23

      It’s a total Monet….

I’ll give it an in…. From far away :)

    • Ediths_Head

Out. Looks like she washed that man right outta her hair, got her real estate license, and is going to knock ‘em dead at the annual REALTOR (TM) luau. In Chappaqua. In July.

    • Jecca2244

you know, i think she could pull off some subtle cutouts…i will pretty much always defend her because I spent a few hours with her once and she’s the nicest, most genuine, thank you card writing gal around. although i suppose that’s not the point here : )

    • altalinda

In. She’s pulling it off better than the model, in fact she looks really good in it. Although it does tilt older than she is.

    • rebeemoon

Really IN. Best I’ve ever seen her look. And the shoes . . . To die

    • Pennymac

IN! (I’m feeling generous this morning; its FRIDAY!)

    • TAGinMO

It’s like she swapped out the shoes for something more socialite-y, as a security blanket. But she looks great and is definitely straying outside her wheelhouse, so I give it an IN.

    • bellafigura1

Big IN. The first personal best for her, IMO.

    • Kimbolina

OUT. Hair is still aging socialite, but now it’s one who’s trying to look young and hip.

The strings/lacing on the bodice is fine but I hate it on the sides, for both her and the model. Hate how it like bubbles out around the belt when they move.

      • marlie

Uh oh… “aging socialite”?!?! I thought it was “I only have 5 minutes to straighten my bangs before I leave for work”!

        • Kimbolina

It just looks like something someone a decade or two older than her would do to try to look younger.

    • Jessica O’Connell

IN! I like it and want to give her a little positive reinforcement for not raiding her grandma’s closet this time.

    • Janet B

      OUT

She’s under 30, it’s not Summer and those shoes are ugly.

      • ThaliaMenninger

I ditto this OUT and the reasons why.

    • IraKi

I HATE THE HAIR! I find it awfully distracting! I want to take a pair of scissors and cut it so badly it physically hurts me! BUT I like the look and I am really thankful she did not choose those dreadful shoes the model is wearing. I like the colour and I don’t think this is awfully boring of her sooooo … IN

    • MW

IN. I wish she changed the shoes but I love the dress on her.

    • MaggieMae

She’s not selling it, and the hair is MEH.

    • gigi kennedy

It’s an IN from me. could be because i LOVE that color blue.

    • formerlyAnon

IN. No quibbles. But then, I don’t see it as “trying-to-be-edgy” as much as “having a little fun with the RC dress.”

I really, REALLY like that this dress on her manages the ubiquitous cutouts/view of lower ribcage/peekaboo thing without looking slutty, like a skin disease, or like a nightgown.

ETA: on third & fourth looks, I will allow that the shoes are an increasingly irritating “just missed it” for me. Still in, though.

    • Rebekah B

I’m going to go with IN. It’s different – I like it.

    • nannypoo

I like this dress and the shoes. I really do not like her hair. It looks like that big glob fell out of the hairdo and she’ll be brushing it out of her eye all evening.

    • carnush

It’s modern and not boring. IN all the way.

    • Kbear

      OUT

    • E. D.

I like this, but it needs a bracelet.

    • msdamselfly

      In I like it

    • Mona_Visa

She looks like a purse. White leather outside, blue lining inside… And the shoes are so very, very sad.

I’m giving her an in, but just barely, and it’s mostly due to her Power of Pretty.

    • marlie

I like it! It’s the most age-appropriate and fashion forward (I’m being generous here) that I’ve ever seen her. Plus, the dress itself IS kind of fun! Her hair and makeup are simple and standard, but pretty, and I really like the shoes.

ETA: That’s an IN from me.

    • Snailstsichr

In – but I wish she had thrown her shoulders back and owned it like the model.

    • Maya

i say in, because she has to start somewhere

      • Constant Reader

Thank you. I was just struggling to express the same thing. IN.

    • butterflysunita

IN–I think she looks great. It’s better than anything else I’ve seen her in.

    • CatherineRhodes

OUT. The dress is ugly and the shoes don’t match.

Also: January. Here in L.A., we obviously don’t have real cold, but we try to give a nod to the seasons. This just looks off.

    • SassieCassy

this is a good girls attempt at edgy and i am not here for it

    • housefulofboys

In. I like the color on her, and the hair styling is good on her face. I’m not going to fault her for summertime in January since, well, everyone else is pulling out the spring lines too. I don’t see how they figured that those shoes went with that dress…at all…but it’s a minor quibble.

    • boweryboy

OUT. Huzzahs all around for her trying something different, but she seems to get it wrong all the time. I would love the hair if I knew she actually cut and styled it that way, but I know if I could see the back there’s probably a tragic bun or a honking braided ponytail.

What’s up with the Girls girls and their terrible fashion sense?

ETA: Ugly dress by the way.

    • Erica_Vuitton

IN – she’s clearly a classy chick and this is her look. I looove the dress – COLOR!!! Actual saturated color on the RC. Gorgeous make-up. A bit meh on the hair & shoes but overall an IN. Also, is lacing the new trend for Spring 2014? Jessica Alba’s PCA dress was also laced up the sides. Reminds me of Paris Blues jeans I wore in 8th grade with tan “suede” lacing down the sides.

      • marlie

        UGH. Those JEANS.

    • Michelle Wilson

I’m gonna give her an IN. It’s as edgy as she’s ever gonna get and it’s miles ahead of anything else she’s worn on the red carpet.

    • decormaven

Headed toward an IN, but still got one foot in OUTland due to shoes.

    • Genesis Hansen

IN! Such a huge improvement for her that I can forgive the flaws in the details. The dress is a little odd, but it’s flattering, the color is great on her, and she looks like she feels sexy in it. It’s a win.

    • Aurumgirl

No because I think the dress and shoes are just plain tacky.

    • elemspbee

      OUT. Girls’ girls OUT!

    • anotherkate

I can dig the strings here, plus I think the ’94 hair works in a weird way. I wish to god she’d chosen edgier shoes, but of course that would never fly for her. I give it an IN for effort!

      • marlie

The ’94 hair is as basic as you can get. I have worn my hair JUST that way… you leave your bangs out and pull the rest back because you only had 5 minutes to “do” your hair.

    • Jaye Tyler

Look! A cheerleader cum airline stewardess from the spacefuture! Maybe she can tell us who wins the Superbowl in 2095!

    • jspark

Maybe she has horrible knee tattoos and that’s why she always goes for the grandmother hemline. That being said, I like the color… IN

      • teensmom99

Nope–because hiding tattoos does not seem to be an issue for the Girls’ girls.

    • Belvane

Completely OUT, but not because she doesn’t look good — it’s just not event-appropriate. Summer fete at the Hamptons, yes.

    • Slanted & Enchanted

IN. I actually mostly like her style to begin with (she says as she scurries off to find someplace to hide), but this is definitely one of her better looks. Love the color and silhouette on her.

    • stan bobwood

      Nice try. Out.

    • Badriya Al-Badi’a

I have to say out if only because the shape and strapping on the upper half of the dress look too much like the CBS logo plastered all over the wall behind her. Also, wrong shoes.

    • jen

In! I think this is one of her top looks so far. She looks her age!!

    • barbarienne

It’s cute, it’s venue appropriate, and her smile is selling it. Modest in.

      Those shoes are awful, though.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

In. This feels like an 80′s retro look – the rich 80′s which normally isn’t sought after as much as the fun, camp looks. She could take the whole 80′s Power Woman Power vibe and start a new trend.

    • Bethany Roullett

Out. I don’t think the strings on the sides work. Maybe if those bits were filled in… and she wore a different dress.

    • http://petaphotography.tumblr.com/ Peta Jones

Mostly an IN for the dress, and more youthful hair attempt, but the shoes are a tad mature. That blue is beautiful on her.

    • Jenna Marie

Out. At first I liked it because of the grading curve, but the more I look at it, the more it reads old country singer to me. Which she most certainly is not. Too bad.

    • SugarSnap108

OUT. Love the color, but hate the hair, skirt length and shoes. And the belted strings around her waist just look odd.

    • suzq

I like it. What I want to know is whether there is a rule that dresses must come from a designer in one length and you will live with that, Ms. Starlet, please and thank you! The ladies are borrowing the dress for the evening. Can’t you make more than one in different lengths so that when we see it, we crave it instead of dismissing it as too long?

    • rloliveira

I like it. I think it’s sophisticated, rather than old. I think she looks beautiful. And I like the shoes.

    • http://smalltownbigwardrobe.com/ Catherine

IN. I really love it, but I’m a total sucker for blue dresses.

    • BobStPaul

In. Not sure how this can even be at question.

    • Nika E

In- I’m not a fan of white pointy toed shoes but I like these because of the color blocking. Cute.

    • Glam Dixie

In, I actually DO like it. It’s not Earth shattering, but she looks great.

    • another_laura

I’m on the fence. On the one hand, the color is lovely and brings out her eyes. On the other hand, string. And then the shoes are reminding me of a bird’s beak (which is decidedly NOT good).

I’ve got to go with Out on this one. But an okay effort.

    • ThesisMonkey

IN. The hair bugs, but I like this dress a lot notwithstanding the secretary skirtness. Hope she keeps up the trend of inching toward her actual age.

    • Aidan B

In! An improvement overall due to the presence of design elements. Plus that blue is gorgeous on her.

    • Sunraya

In. Love the blue, like the dress, it is interesting. LOVE the shoes!!!!

    • melanie0866

IN. It’s almost a WERQ. It’s at least an attagirl.

    • Raymond Dnomyar

I can’t even get past the hair, so OUT.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

In. We grade on a curve and that color is amazing for her eyes.

    • Bradio311

      A for effort! In!

    • PastryGoddess

      IN

I like it and the color is amazing on her

    • LJCdoc

In. And I love the shoes, but then I actually AM middle aged.

    • sagecreek

In. I hate the ladies who lunch shoes, but esp on her, it’s definitely an in.

    • Tatiana Luján

In. I like the dress a lot. Hair and makeup, as usual, are very good. Don’t like the shoes at all.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

In. I like it, and it looks good on her.

    • marlie

      I don’t think her hair is the “Kate Gosselin”… my secretary has the ACTUAL Kate Gosselin cut, and it looks nothing like this. {shudder}

    • Bailey Debruynkops

      nope, tryhard

    • LaSylphide

In. Which is a surprise, but I think it’s cute and she looks good.

    • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

I totally LOVE IT. So, IN.

    • KT

She’s never going to be edgy, and this is almost endearing in its attempt to be as such, but I do think this is largely working for her. That bold cobalt blue was a wise choice, as were the shoes that provide a little visual interest. So I suppose she’s sufficiently established her “baseline” or whatever the fuck that quote from Elle was?

    • Trickytrisha

      Most definitely IN.

    • Sarah

IN. I like it a lot for her. It’s nautical kind of, which suits her roots of fanciness, and it fits well. She looks youthful and alive! Good job, Lady Snoozeville.

    • alyce1213

In, absolutely! This is a great dress for her.

    • Rachael

It looks like a business meeting with a blazer, take the blazer off for drinks after work outfit. You would think with the ability to hire a stylist, she would.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

      I don’t like it on it’s own merits, but it’s improvement. I guess that’s a tepid in?

    • StarburstLady

      IN

    • Let it out

In. It’s too mature but *really* flattering and the shoes are covetable.

    • Imasewsure

IN – interesting enough (don’t like the shoes) and a HUGE step forward for Ms. Allison

    • teensmom99

Sorry, she’s still reminding me of the way my more conservative friends were dressing in the 80s (if a little more bare). So that’s an OUT.

    • trisker

out. such a pretty girl but no style!

    • Valdri8

In – but too bad the hair is all “Friends” – Season 3

    • rainwood1

IN, but then I also happen to like that she prefers to go with a classic look generally. I don’t think of it as too mature, unlike T Lo and many of the BK’s. N

    • kimmeister

IN. I may be a bit biased because cobalt blue is my favorite color, but I think the dress is very flattering on her.

    • SorayaS

Out. Aside from the colour, the dress is hideous as are the shoes. And the hair is giving me shades of Kate Goesslin.

    • Ruth Preston

It looks like lawn furniture. “Come on down to Red Lobster for unlimited shrimp! We have outdoor seating!”

    • Shawn EH

Step in the right direction for her. She’ll always look uptight. IN!

    • lalahartma

      I say out.

    • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

IN. Perfect for her AND not bland = WIN

    • LeelaST

OUT. She doesn’t look like a 50-year old (to me) but all the triangle/angular elements from dress lines to pointy-toed shoes to tiny earrings to her angular bangs/fringe just say “trying to hard to be edgy.”

    • Tom Shea

      IN. She looks great.

    • Tracy_Flick

OUT. The dress looks cheap and the shoes don’t go.

    • Lisa_Co

IMO big improvement for her. IN.

    • SylviaFowler

      In

    • lesmaha

      Grading on a curve: IN.

    • anneland

IN. She looks chic and modern.

    • jennifromcali

      In! I do like it!

    • http://twitter.com/janedonuts Jane Donuts

Out. Can’t stand the white trim. And why is it so long?

    • AmeliaEve

OUT – the part that is killing me is that she is vamping it up like she feels very daring and edgy in this outfit that reminds me of tennis clothes. I don’t think there is any big mystery about the length – she is just shorter than the model.

    • DuBey2

IN. It fits her better than on the model. And I’ll just say nothing about the shoes.

    • Reality TV Casting

      in

    • demidaemon

Kudos on the hair. The only thing interesting about the dress is the string feature, which automatically makes it OUT. Nice try, Allison. Better luck next time.

    • Michelle Gennari

      Too summery.

    • VicksieDo

Are you joking? This is fantastic!!

    • Fred Vaughn

In, only because it’s not matronly.

    • Susan Velazquez

      In. personal best for her

    • RuthGo

IN. I love the whole thing. And that’s a great color on her.

    • a_liking

can i still vote on this? because it is definitely an in for me and i would be sad to see it voted out.

    • St. Ace

Her hair looks so much more interesting than her typical Socialite-hair.
