Allison Williams in Christian Dior at the “Girls” Premiere

Posted on January 07, 2014

Now see? Was that so hard, Allison?

Allison Williams attends the “Girls” season three premiere at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City in head-to-toe Christian Dior.

If she didn’t become an actress she was pretty much bound to become a socialite, so it’s no surprise that her style tends to lean in that direction. Oh, what are we saying? “Lean in?” Her entire red carpet career has had her looking like the 50-year-old wife of a very prominent NYC surgeon most of the time. On her bad days, she looked like an 80-year-old heiress. For some really odd reason, she seemed to have skipped the one style that works for her, the red carpet, her age, and the image she’s trying to project right now: debutante style. It’s not a look we’re inclined to love, but when it’s on the right gal, we really can’t argue with it. We’re hoping that with this look, she and/or her team have finally figured it out, because this is the height of deb style. Those might not have been the shoes we’d have picked for her, but that dress is gorgeous and it suits her to a T. We’d also have probably recommended something slightly edgier than that for the hair and makeup, but that’s who she is and she might as well run with it. In another instance, we might have considered this dress just a bit too twee, bordering on juvenile, but it’s honestly one of the most age-appropriate thing she’s ever worn. Even if you think this would look better on the decade-younger Kiernan Shipka, that’s a lot better than dressing twice your age.

Attagirl.

I am very much against the pinwheel motif.

    • Nicholas

Think she snagged it from the set of Mad Men or Masters of Sex?

      • Spreecord

That entire look is Betty Draper in the future.

☸☸ ☸☸☸ ☸☸☸☸ ☸๵☸☸ ☸☸☸☸ ☸☸☸☸The apron bow at the back is in line with the stay-at-home socialite style, unfortunately. Will she bring homebaked muffins to her husband’s fundraiser?

  • Clueless_Jock

    Perfection.

    • Katesymae

Right?! I’m giving her a WERQ in my book. She could not have picked a better color scheme and her makeup is On. Fucking. Point.

  • ConnieBV

For her, this is very much edgy hair. See, Lena? See the length and the earrings? FOR CHRIST’S SAKE.

  • Karen Belgrad

Hmmph… it just read “Bat Mitzvah gal” to me (reformed, to account for the exposed shoulders/knees)

  • Nicholas

Bridesmaid fug, but baby steps. Progress.

The apron bow at the back is in line with the stay-at-home socialite style, unfortunately. Will she bring homebaked muffins to her husband’s fundraiser?

    • marlie

The bow in the back is the only thing that I really don’t like.

  • Adriana

Very pretty, but you didn’t feature her lovely hair jewelry!

  • http://www.luxperdiem.com/ Paige @ LPD

The weight loss is ageing her, as are all her style choices.

  • @Biting Panda

I could do without the Robert Palmer Girl hair. Though it does help to counter the tweeness of the dress.

    • Sobaika

Try finding other picture of her from the event – she has it in a bun with some very pretty hair jewelry. It’s less Robert Palmer from the back and more Pinterest.

      • @Biting Panda

        will do. thanks.

  • Sarah

She looks like a particularly intense figure skater.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

The 20th anniversary of the infamous knee whacking just passed, so, appropriate?

      • Sarah

Very. She looks like a knee-whacker in wait…

        • Kent Roby

          More knee-whackee.

          • http://www.GiftedCollector.com/ The Gifted Collector

            Definitely more Nancy than Tonya.

    • d4divine

Nancy Kerrigan without the big teeth!!

  • butterflysunita

Hate it. Bridesmaid with random silver decals stuck on.

  • Rand Ortega

    *shrugs*

  • decormaven

Not a fan of the sateen pumps, but this is an improvement over some of her other aged socialite looks.

    • 3boysful

I like the pumps and that they pick up the pink (refuse to say “mauve” on principle) in the dress bling, and that she didn’t default to putty/silver/black, but I despise the curved heel.

      • decormaven

Those heels are hiddy, yes? Oh well, the overall look is a step up from her usual staid go-to’s.

  • crash1212

I must confess that I pretty much hate – HATE – everything here. I’m totally off Dior at this point and am putting it in the category with the dreadful Stella McCartney. I hate the way the heels on those shoes curve. I like her head…but then, her head has never been the issue. Having said all of that, I totally understand why TLo are giving this rave-ish reviews.

  • hughman

“And I stepped on the ping-pong ball! I just squashed it to bits. And then Bunny and I ran to the closet of the game room to get another ping-pong ball and the closet was locked! Imagine?”

    • filmcricket

      It was just ghastly!

    • StellaZafella

Careful Miss Upton, your Larchmont Lockjaw is showing…;>)

    • LadyLuck777

      Perfect reference!

  • marlie

I like this – the dress is really cute. It’s approaching ice skater costume, but the asymmetrical hem saves it from going over that line.

Her makeup is lovely, and she actually has the right facial shape/hairline/hair color to do the slicked back look and have it come across as chic, and not severe.

  • Laura Renee

    Flawless face.

  • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I just wish her hair weren’t so severe. Her face is already so angular, I think she needs the softness a looser ‘do would bring.

    • Nicholas

Just copy everything Emmy Rossum is doing on the red carpet, and she would be fine, more or less.

      • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

YES! what a great role model Emmy would be for her, fashion-wise. Good call.

  • SewingSiren

She’s the National New’s Anchor’s daughter, and the other one is the Famous Playwright’s daughter, how come the Rock Star’s daughter never walks the red carpet?

  • MilaXX

I like the dress even if it is a bit too shiny & twee for my taste. Those shoes on the other hand, must go. She’s bordering on bridesmaid territory with those.

  • imakeart

It’s a pretty dress, but when I first saw those flowers, I thought of Dorothy’s tin can pinwheels in “Twister.”

  • melanie0866

Love the dress. Hate the hair. It looks wet.

  • PeggyOC

Why couldn’t Dior have brought this out of the closet when Jennifer Lawrence was pole dancing for them last month?

  • In_Stitches

That dress is worked to death. The elements of the dress all work for her, but they certainly don’t work together. Tear off the embellishments and re-sew them to a simple a-line and she’ll have a winner.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

This isn’t doing it for me. This is straight up bridesmaid, including the shoes.

  • nannypoo

I don’t like anything here, especially the hair.

  • Janet B

One of the most ‘modern’ looks I’ve seen her wear.
I’m sure she thinks her hair is quite edgy.

  • Kent Roby

She’s so beautiful when she’s natural/casual on “Girls” that it surprises me that she is so far from ever owning the red carpet. I agree that this look is a vast improvement over most of her RC looks, but I’m still a bit underwhelmed by her here. Are gays on strike or something?

  • KT

I’m not crazy about the dress, the hair is too severe and the shoes are AWFUL, but she looks very polished and confident in this, which is making the overall effect work.

  • sagecreek

Cute! I agree the hair is too severe, but this is so much better than her norm.

  • Trickytrisha

I hate that hair with a white hot hate. Why would a good looking woman do that to herself? Nice makeup, damn cute dress, hideous shoes that make her feet look like canoes.

  • Imasewsure

Like the hair and makeup; like the dress but not together… shoes are ugly… still a good start for 2014

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

    WERQ. Finally!

  • CatherineRhodes

Is she the “Charlotte” of the “Girls”?

  • kimmeister

I dislike the mullet skirt and abhor the shape of the heel. Everything else passes muster.

  • msdamselfly

    Not a fan

  • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

Wow! What a difference a dash of youth-in-her-style makes. And she looks like she knows it.

  • Sunraya

I don’t know who she is, but she bores me. And this dress is for a 12 year old. Ridiculous on her.

  • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

I like her hair like this, and her face looks fresh.
Something about this dress just rubs me the wring way – the satin, the ugly-ass flowers, the uneven hem – but I like it’s shape and the general idea behind it.

  • E. D.

    Ice skater.

  • Lily-Rygh

A huge step in the right direction for her, but man, I do NOT like that hair — it looks way too severe on her.

  • SugarSnap108

I’m not seeing the gorgeous in this dress at all. To say something nice, she has pretty eyes.

  • d4divine

She’s very pretty…but there is something very ordinary about her…no…maybe soulless is the word I’m looking for…

  • cocohall

For her, this is Sassy! She is usually so timid, fashion wise, that I think this is a tremendous step forward. Maybe 2014 will be the year she starts to own her potential. I hope so.

  • Tracy_Flick

This is, like, the opposite of Meryl Streep in a studded tracksuit. Meryl: looking so happy and relaxed in a fugly outfit that you can’t help but smile. Allison: Looking so tortured in a pretty dress that you can’t help but cringe.

  • BobStPaul

I frankly have never understood the criticism of the way she dresses. She’s got a classic sense of style which I find refreshing in someone her age. I have to say, though, that as soon as I saw a picture of this outfit that I knew she’d come in for praise from the critics who say she dresses too old for her age.

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/divine_aphasia/ Constant Cat

Love the hem and coloring. Very sparkly, wintery without going over the top. I like the slicked hair too.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1180174329 Elizabeth Phillips SC TSu

Is it just me, or does she look like the younger sister of Amanda Peet?

  • quiltrx

I rather love the dress, and her face looks great. Good job.

  • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

the hair’s too butch and the shoes too blah, but that’s a damn cute little frock.

  • lillyvonschtupp

You guys already said it: It would look good on Kiernan Sherpa or Dakota Fanning. It’s cute, but a little too young for her.

  • Constant Reader

Maybe it’s a Goldilocks thing: she was dressing to old, now she’s dressing too young, and soon she will get it just right.

  • IAmJ

I am freaked out by how much this hairstyle looks like her dad’s hair.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

Best she’s ever looked on the RC!

Stepford wife. I do like her though, but from the neck up, that hair and smile combo is NOT RIGHT.
