Alicia Keys in Armani Privé at the 2014 Grammy Awards

Posted on January 28, 2014

We’re ready to say it: This was not a great year for the Grammys red carpet. We seem to be doing a lot of bitching about the main event as well as the varous pre- and post-parties. Granted, musicians and singers are the least likely of the celebrity species to collectively exhibit taste, but even so. We’d rather see meat dresses and spectacle than a bunch of awkward-looking gowns.

Alicia Keys attends the 2014 Grammy Awards held at The Staples Center in Los Angeles, California in a custom Armani Privé dress accessorized with Stephen Webster jewelry.

This is far from the worst look of the night. In fact, it’s not even that bad. The shape and color look gorgeous on her. But that neckline isn’t doing much for her. We don’t mind a sternum-baring plunge on the Grammys red carpet, but we’re thinking a more conventional V shape would’ve helped tremendously. The hair looks fantastic, but the face looks curiously underdone, but that’s also been a recurring issue this year; weird hair or makeup.

But she’s getting too much of our ire. If we were handing out letter grades, this would probably be around a B-. Not the worst, but it could be vastly improved with a little effort.

Boy, can this woman wear no makeup – makeup like a rockstar!

    • Ginger

DAT HAIR! *swoon* If only I could pull that off.

    • French_Swede

The dress is a beautiful color, but it makes her look too wide in the hips…IMHO.

    • PlethoraofBooks

It looks weirdly unflattering at the hips? Maybe because of the cut of the neckline? Anyone else?

      • LJCdoc

I concur. I think it has something to do with the neckline, and perhaps the fact that it’s cut to the waist, which is sitting high on her.

      • conniemd

Gives her that oh-so-unflattering pear shape. Beautiful color though.

        • Bexxx

I love the pear shape! Girl’s got ROCKING hips and a lethal ass, it would be a crime not to show them off. I don’t think she needs to make some illusion that she has a larger bust when she doesn’t just to have an “even” silhouette. Might just be me though, cuz I’ve always been envious of girls with that build.

          • Laura Renee

I was just admiring her hips and silhouette. :)

          • Stella Zawistowski

Me too. The pear shape is a feature, not a bug.

          • sweetestsith

She has a GREAT shape, but this doesn’t show it off as well as it could. To me, it looks too small and its tight because its pulling, not because it was intentional. Either do flowy and down play the hips, or do tight and rock them. The in between is awkward.

            • fursa_saida

Yeah. I think this dress was probably cut to be flowy on a woman with a different shape, which is why it’s all in-between-y. But I don’t think the problem is even that major in this instance.

          • http://missbethg.wordpress.com Beth Ann

I am tired of wider hips as being something to be minimized or disguised by a dress. It would be great if the pear body-shape is allowed to appear as is. Some women are more gifted in that area. I don’t like how high the waist sits or how low the front is cut, so that throws the look off for me, not her hips.

          • Danielle Colman

No question she has fabulous hips – I think the issue is that this dress is making them look oddly angular, which throws off the proportions. She’s a gloriously sexy pear, but in this dress she looks triangular.

        • AnguaVonUberwald

She has a pear shape. It ain’t a crime. I was actually looking at her and thinking, “Hey, Alicia Keys and I have something in common!”

      • jen_vasm

Less fabric on top + high waist + luscious hips = silhouette imbalance.

    • Sarah

Oh, for some lippy in a color. She looks great, though. Love the blue and the curve-hugging.

    • @Biting Panda

No. Not even a little bit.

    • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

Color is great, but the shape is not.

    • Anna

I want to like it, but I can’t. On the one hand, these type of plunging neckline/curve-hugging dresses work so well on women like her and J-Lo but it looks like a monokini on top and as others have pointed out, it’s not very flattering on the bottom.

    • Knightley

To me, she looks like she wants to be Grace Jones, but got out of the chair before they could finish her makeup. It might have worked if only she’d let them finish…

    • Jaeda Laurez

I love the fact that she keeps it booty and thighlicious, but the top of that dress is what’s wrong. she’s too small up top to make that straight plunge to her hips work.

      • Sarah

That’s my thinking. I don’t think the dress is unflattering on the bottom – she has a bangin’ figure. I agree with TLo that the plunge is too deep and not flattering to her chest, though.

      • schadenfreudelicious

Agreed, it’s that” 80’s monokini” look top that is almost impossible for anyone to pull off, including Ms Keys…

    • mmebam

Oh my God, that neckline… Why?

    • Monabel

That neckline is as wide as her face. “Orrible.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

She looks like Clark Kent going to save the day but forgot to put on the Superman suit underneath.

    • Joanna

I cannot wait until this bare sternum/underboob thing dies – it’s just not attractive or sexy AT ALL.

    • MilaXX

Fashion always has to beat something to death. The neutral/natural face has got to stop. Some of these gals look plain old washed out. I agree on the shape of the plunge, but that face is the bigger crime here. Makeup artist, please put some color on the lips!

    • Imasewsure

A simple V plunge would have saved this look for sure. I’m ok with the minimalistic makeup (since I don’t wear any) but that neckline is awful

    • Bexxx

All I can think of every time I see her is Alexis Mateo’s lesbian Alicia Keys interpretation from the Snatch Game. Drag queens bring the light and joy into my life…the light and joy that seems to be missing from her skin here. Her face looks oddly dull, right? I feel like i usually picture her with beautiful, glowing skin. ETA: I think this is caused by the lack of contrast with the lip.

Related: We are less than a month away from RPDR Season 6, and I am too excited to function.

      • KirFla

RPDR- so excited I forget to breathe!

      • anyalama

I have two friends on this season so I am bouncing off the walls with excitement!!!

        • Bexxx

STOP. I obviously already know all of the girls’ names and backstories and I’ve picked my pre-season faves- WHO do you know, if you don’t mind me asking!

          • anyalama

I used to be in a band with Kelly Mantle and I went to school with Laganja.

            • LJCdoc

You are officially the coolest person I don’t actually know but frequent similar websites as.

            • Jacob Bowen

I LOVE both of them! I am especially jealous that Laganja is Alyssa Edwards’ daughter because Alyssa Edwards is my spirit animal!

      • Glam Dixie

The guest judges are giving me life! Adam Lambert and Neil Patrick Harris, both of whom are my imaginary bff’s. I can’t wait.

    • mjude

she is such a pretty girl, no reason for blank face.

    • IraKi

I just looove seeing her healthy curves!

    • Sam Smith

The color is very pretty. That’s all I have.

    • marlie

Alicia clearly forgot to put on lipstick. I wish that the black accents on the dress were a little lower so that the dress didn’t create a visual break in her body at such a high point. Otherwise, though, I really like this dress on her. The color is gorgeous, and she’s able to pull off the sternum-baring dresses.

      • Candigirl1968

She’s wearing lip color. It’s just that annoying naked face thing.

        • marlie

Oh, I know. But the nude lip color things has GOT to stop.

    • Evan

Without Rihanna and Lady Gaga, the red carpet was boring imo. It also was EXTREMELY tacky this year.

      • demidaemon

Boring and tacky. You’d think the tacky would at least make it interesting. *shakes head*

        • Evan

You’re right. It wasn’t even good tacky. Where’s Cher when you need her?

    • Cheryl

The colour is gorgeous, but I HATE the American Hustle neckline. Makes her look bottom heavy, when she has a great athletic looking body. What a face though; that woman is stunning!

    • Glam Dixie

This make her look like a linebacker, broad chest and shoulders, I hated it. I would have given her a solid D. There’s nothing about this except the color that flatters her.

    • Qitkat

Girl’s got a bodacious body, but my dislike for this much sternum-baring outside of a swimsuit overwhelms anything else, even the lovely color.
And I’ve got to say it, I hope this trend of tall hair, shaved sides disappears sooner than soon.

    • lalahartma

I’m not into the wide sternum baring necklines.

    • RussellH88

It looks kinda funky at the hips, like she asked Alexis Mateo to pad the dress for her.

    • unbornfawn

Have to agree that the Grammys red carpet was pretty lackluster this year. I expect more risk taking and outrageousness on the Grammy red carpet. Everyone seemed to play it safe.

    • Jen

I read the title and was so hopeful, but this is a bit of a let down. Love the color on her, and the rest of the dress is just so-so….

    • GinnyThePainter

Tina Fey kinda has the white lady version of this figure, and the stylists always put in her in a deep V neckline. I’d love to see that “V’ neckline here, with more width at the shoulders (to balance out her lower body) and more volume of fabric from the hips down.

    • lifeisastory

It’s a beautiful color on her, but she looks very disproportionate. Is she that bottom heavy, or is that the dress?

    • Janet B

      Way too much sternum.

    • ojosazules

She is so gorgeous. She fills out a dress beautifully. I much prefer sternum baring with the more delicately gifted women.

      • Pennymac

I love the phrase “Delicately gifted women’ !

    • River

Feel like it’s not quite proportioned right for her and damn, I wish she was wearing brighter lipstick. She’s stunning, of course, she can’t help it!

    • golden_valley

This dress probably looked great on the mannequin but when it’s put on a real live person it looks wrong. The hips and derriere areas seem really wide and too low on the body. The black patent leather is higher than her natural waist is, but too low to be an empire waist. I think it doesn’t fit her. Has anyone heard of tailoring or is that not allowed on a borrowed designer gown?

      • Lisa Hager

        Yes. This.

    • KiP07

I would like to sign off on this, but I feel like I’ve seen her wear this silhouette and hair many times before and you’d think by now she’d have nailed it. I agree that the neckline is the major issue, but I also think a little color on the lips would help too.

    • Sabin

Backwards dresses are becoming the new sheer-everything for me. As in, die please.

    • Trickytrisha

She looks like she’d be more comfortable in sweats and sneakers. I do wish she’d let her hair down occasionally to frame that lovely face.

    • sagecreek

No, the juncture of bodice and waist is just too weird.

    • Pennymac

My sister in law had that hair when I first met her in 1984. To quote my mom, “Nice girl. Whats wrong with her hair?”

    • Pterodactyl111

I think her lips could use some color.

    • http://missbethg.wordpress.com Beth Ann

Yes, I don’t find the sternum-bearing dresses flattering on most. A v-neckline would have been an improvement as would a lower waist on the dress!

    • supri_supri

Alicia, I know you don’t need a diamond ring, but you could use a sternum full of diamonds with this! This neckline flatters no one, Giorgio! It makes her look like a rectangle overall and the hair does not help. But if she had a few strands of amazing gems plus a sheer red lip gloss this could have been a great look.

    • Diego!

I agree with you guys. Face seems to be undone. I agree with the neckline, had it ben narrower, this would have been a killa look!

    • Amanda Miller

Love the hair, love the makeup, love the color. She’s smart to play up her boobs- it sort of balances her out- but a v neckline would have worked a lot better.

    • theweddingdresser

Seriously, who do these girls wear tees dresses so tight ? she ruined this frock !
