2014 SAG Awards Red Carpet Rundown – Part 1

Posted on January 21, 2014

All right, celebs. Line up in a single file so we can judge you more efficiently.

Lesley Nicol, Kevin Doyle, Phyllis Logan, and David Robb

Loving Lesley Nicol’s coat. Mrs. Hughes got herself quite the blowout, didn’t she? Oh Molesley. Get your pants hemmed, you sad sack.

Anna Chlumsky in Sophie Theallet

There appear to be a couple weird bumps and pulls but otherwise, this looks great on her.

Hannah Simone in Marchesa

Pretty but a little dull for pictures.

Emma Thompson in William Vintage

Of course we knew if she ever took our advice to get rid of her painful shoes, she’d wind up picking something pretty bad from a style front. We suppose we should be grateful they’re not Uggs.

That skirt is weird.

Holly Hunter in Randi Rahm

She looks great, but we loved her most for talking to Giuliana like she was a barely functional moron.

Isla Fisher in Oscar de la Renta

Old school Hollywood glam. Could’ve used some color.

Anna Gunn in Monique Lhuillier

Simple; great color on her; gets the job done. We wonder if the Breaking Bad cast isn’t eager to move on.

Laura Carmichael in Vionnet

Normally, the lack of color would bother us greatly, but this is a really beautiful gown. Not loving the hair, though.

Jennifer Garner in Max Mara

Simple and classic. We can’t hate, but we’re just now starting to realize how boring and safe this red carpet was.

Kaley Cuoco in Vera Wang

See what we mean? Pretty color, though.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Monique Lhuillier

It’s a lot better than that Mother of the Bride dress she was sporting at the Critics Choice Awards.

Kathy Griffin in Antonio Berardi

Mindy Kaling in David Meister

Love this.

Mariah Carey in Saint Laurent

 Grow up.

Elisabeth Rohm in Marchesa

Buttercream icing.

Matthew McCounaghey in Dolce&Gabbana and Camila Alves in Donna Karan Atelier

We’re not sure if yellow’s really her color, but that’s a spectacular dress for her. For such a skinny guy, it’s a mystery as to why his suits and tuxes always seem to be a bit snug. Great jacket, though.

Mayim Bialik

Dear GOD.

How on earth did something like this even happen?

Michelle Dockery in J. Mendel

Hate the neckline. Hate the whole top half, really.

Morena Baccarin in Monique Lhuillier

Serving up Mommy Rack. She knows what she’s doing. Great color.

Rose Leslie in Temperley London

Sofia Vergara in Donna Karan Atelier

The necklace is way too much with it, but the gown is spectacular.

Sophia McShera in David Meister

Hair and makeup look amazing. We’re not entirely sold on the dress, though.

It’s cute how much the Downton Abbey girls really go for it when they get a chance to. Can you blame them? Especially the downstairs staff, who wear the same ugly costumes in every scene and no jewelry or makeup.

Rita Moreno

Grandma got game.

We interviewed her a couple years back. Sharp as a tack. Honestly, one of the sharpest celebrities we’ve ever spoken to.

This is all perhaps a bit too much but there’s no way in hell we can do anything but love her for wearing it.

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson

That’s the best she’s looked on the red carpet in ages.

Dial it up a few years, Mariah. Don’t worry: when you get to be Rita Moreno’s age, you get to wear whatever the hell you like.

    • Victor Beiramar Diniz

magde called, she wants her gloves back

      • kmk05

Exactly what I was about to type! So contrived.

    • MilaXX

Someone needs to have a sit down with her. She would look younger and slimmer in clothes that actually fit.

      • Anna

To me this is the beauty and comedy of Mariah Carey. She wouldn’t be the same or as entertaining if she was understated and elegant.

        • MilaXX

She morphing from ditzy sex pot diva to just a pitiful joke

          • livesarah

She just strikes me as yet another stunning woman who is massively insecure and feels the need to prove something. She is genetically blessed, and I think she would do a lot better if she realised this and dressed to what suits her rather than what she thinks is ‘sexy’. It’s very juvenile.

      • decormaven

I just want to say to her that “Dream Lover” was a long, long time ago. Things change, dear; it’s the smart woman who moves with the times and celebrates the body she has now– not 25 years ago.

        • kmc1138

I kind of love that she celebrates the body she has now. 🙂 She always looks like she’s having a blast. My biggest complaint is that the dresses are just boring.

    • Tarn

This makes me terrified that Mariah will show up at age 82 wearing exactly what she wore to this. [shudder]

      • ailujailuj

        Her poor kids.

  • Ok I saw it, I can’t unsee it, I have to say it out loud.. does it not look like Anna Chlumsky has an opossum face sticking out at her crotch there? I can clearly see two eyes, and a nose. :/

    • Wendi126

Possum pussy is never a good look

    • She needs to work on her tuck, that’s for sure.

    • MilaXX

Honesty it looks like a peen. Did she have no handlers to smooth that out?

    • Definite polterwang.

    • Tom Robinson

I see a koala bear but I get your point.

  • BayTampaBay

I just love David Robb and Dr. Clarkson.

What’s up with Mariah Carey in that Saint Laurent? She looks awful.

    • Andrea

Kevin Doyle may be the only downtown resident that looks exactly the same in costume as out of costume.

      • MilaXX

He actually looks worse cause on Downton I’m sure the have rules on hem length. Me. Carson would never have allowed him to work in those pants.

        • AnneElliot

My first thought exactly!!! “I’m not a valet, but I play one on TV.” Then GET YOUR PANTS HEMMED.

    • Lorelei_D

I adore David Robb and his outfit. Looks like he raided Alan Cumming’s closet. 😀

    • ailujailuj

she looks awful in most everything I’ve seen her in in the last decade. Unnecessarily.

    • scoobynacks

Glad to see David Robb. He’s had a horrible time over the last year with what happened to his wife, and it’s really great to see him out with the cast. He can wear whatever he darn well pleases.

      • Anne

Wow, I had to look him up to find out what happened to his wife. The poor man.

  • marlie

Hannah Simone was one of my favorites. I though it was a beautiful dress.
Mindy Kaling and Morena Baccarin (both of whom often flub it on the red carpet) really brought it.

Rose Leslie’s dress is HIDEOUS, only to be surpassed by the monstrosity that Mayim Bialik is wearing.

Sofia Vergara’s dress looks like it’s so heavy it’s about to slide right off of her torso.

Rita Moreno can do no wrong – she looks fabulous!

  • MannahattaMamma

Say what you will about those shoes, Emma Thompson has really pretty feet. And I hope that I can age like Rita Moreno. Woman is fierce.

    • Andrea

God you’re right – she does. It’s probably from not putting them in punishing and ill-fitting shoes her entire life. And getting a pedi – that doesn’t hurt either.

    • MilaXX

Why is there no middlle ground in Hollywood? A kitten heel or even a wedge would have looked nicer. I don’t know about other BK’s but super flat shoes with no arch make my feet hurt worse. My flats have to have an arch support or at least a half inch heel

      • altalinda

Amen. Please, Emma, lead a movement for the return of kitten heels. Maybe throwbacks to the 1920s?

      • Alloy Jane

I used to have that problem, where really flat flats would make my feet hurt. But then I started doing the barefoot/minimalist thing and that solved that problem.

  • teensmom99

Poor Hannah Simone had to wear that dress the night Lupita showed how to wear flowers at the neck.
And Mindy K knew just how great she looked–I saw it on her fb.

    • MilaXX

I liked Mindy’s dress. I just wish her hair was pulled up or back.

  • Diego!

Mariah, I love you honey, but you are about to turn 44… that dress is for your daughter. Now, pass it on. Wear something chic, spectacular. Not tacky and slutty. I hate her dress and hate Rose Leslie’s and hate Mayim’s.

Big winners here are: Jennifer Garner – she looks AMAZING! Isla Fisher, Holly Hunter, Michelle Dockery and Sofia Vergara. All of them look amazing! Special mention to Rita Wilson, I almost fainted.

And a punishment to Emma Thompson for wearing altered flip flops on a red carpet.

    • heartbot

I didn’t even recognize Jennifer Garner.

      • PeaceBang

        Me, neither.

        • AnneElliot

At first I thought it was Diane Lane.

  • I love that Mindy Kaling dress and if I were her, I would get it in every colour of the rainbow and just wear that, for a while. What a great look for her. I think it could also work at a shorter length too. I would have loved to see it in the sparkly blue material that the girl behind her is wearing.

I love the gorgeous purple outfit Mrs Hughes is wearing, that is a fabulous silhouette for her, and that is some seriously awesome hair. 🙂

Morena Baccarin – great dress but girl that is not your face and I am not sure exactly why this looks nothing like the Morena Baccarin I have seen about the place previously.

Emma Thompson is having such fun with this. 🙂 It is joyful to watch.. and I love those flats. Please, more flats on the red carpet!

    • filmcricket

I think Morena’s face is partly pregnancy hormones, partly having a four-month-old at home (no sleep) and partly just this picture. I saw a few other shots of her and she looks more like herself. Praise be, she chose something pretty instead of complicated, and just allowed her figure to speak for itself.

      • I think it might be the lack of a bright lip shade, which she often does. And I think they have done some weird shading on her nose which has made it look swollen and longer than it is, that is just a bizarre choice. :/

She’s still gorgeous, of course, but I did not recognise her at first. Looking more at the pics on google, I think this is just not a great makeup look for her. And you have to be a pretty terrible make up artist to make her look bad with all her gorgeous features!! 🙂

  • Hetha Innis

-oh thanks for that, guys! So funny! I can’t wait for GOT to return, but will desperately need a refresher since it has been so damn long.

    • ailujailuj

      just finished 3rd season… woooaaahhh…

  • I like Emma Thompson’s shoes, but they were never going to work with that awkward length skirt. Good parrot though.

And in answer to Lisa Simpson’s theory that there were no Jewish cowboys, if there were no Jewish cowboys why were there Jewish madams?

    • zenobar

That really IS a good parrot 🙂

    • Wendi126

Old west Jewish Madam exactly describes Mayim Bialik above

  • acevedob

LMAO. Anna’s growing something in there. Mariah looks like the deceased husband’s mistress. Mayim’s playing dress up after visiting the fabric store. Only one I could love here is Rita. She’s divine. (Excuse my Puerto Rican bias.)

    • MilaXX

I’m with you on the Arita love. She”s a true OG.

  • Laura Renee

Does anyone else see Michelle Dockery as having three legs??? Either that or only one leg.

    • sagecreek

And Anna Chlomsky has what I can only describe as a boner. So sad.

      • schadenfreudelicious

        AKA polterwang…

        • ailujailuj

thank you! First – love your screen name… but I missed the “polterwang” and have been trying to figure out what it meant. Makes perfect sense.

          • schadenfreudelicious

Thank-you! 🙂 It does seem to occur more commonly in ill fitting, high waisted pants, so the gown version of polterwang is definitley a rare occurrence!

        • oohsparkley!

I think she might have tried to scrub a spot off and stretched the fabric out. Poor thing, how embarrassing!

    • AnneElliot

I thought it was a jumpsuit at first. That neckline was horrible, and she NEEDS A BRA. There. I said it.

  • Wendi126

Rita Moreno is 82! You wear that studded leather you awesome babe.

    • marlie

Seriously. She killed it in that outfit.

    • ailujailuj

She looks like she is going to break out in “Fever!” Love that woman… ageless panache and sophistication.

    • YoungSally

When I see Rita Moreno, I can’t help but shout

      “HEY YOU GUUYYYYSSS!!” (electric company)

      • I can’t help but think of Danny Castellano. D:

  • Andrea

Downton for the win – this is the best I think they have looked collectively on the red carpet.

It seems like Laura Carmichael has upped her game on the red carpet in tandem with Edith upping hers in independence. Regardless, she is definitely not the ugly sister. She looks fabulous in that dress.

    • sagecreek

I’m always struck by how much better she looks in person. They’ve done her no favors with those Edith hairdos.

  • megohd

Jennifer Garner (whom I love) is slowly but surely becoming Rita Wilson.

    Mariah: Couldn’t agree more!

    • MilaXX

She talked about having a hard time after her last baby and thinking back at her RC appearances during that time it really showed. I think she looks great here.

      • megohd

She is absolutely gorgeous. Regal, even.

  • AC Simons

Rita Moreno looked great, and kicked ass. Love her. Jennifer Garner looked elegant and beautiful – great hair, jewelry, and makeup.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

Dear god, Holly Hunter.needs to eat something. Come to my house, sweetie, I’ll fix you a cheeseburger.

  • Eva_baby

I am sorry, but Michelle Dockery’s dress is sooo unflattering. The top makes her breasts look like a pair of chicken cutlets.

    • MilaXX

I didn’t dislike Michelle”a dress, but I didn’t like the shoes with it. The dress she wore to one of the pre show dinners was cuter though

  • UsedtobeEP

I love Rita Moreno. My kids have a Muppets DVD from years ago—the Muppet Show. Rita Moreno is the guest star, and her first number is a dance number where she has a bar fight. I had to explain what that was. She’s also very obviously not wearing a bra in the scene. Way to go, 70s kids’ show!

    • Who had time for a bra in the seventies? 😀

  • Frank_821

Yup SAG red carpet a disappontment.

Dear lord, someone must smite down the person who created Mayaim’s dress

I kind of like Emma Thompson’s dress. Those shoes don’t go with but still….

  • ojosazules

Mayim seems to conflate hideous/frumpy and modest. It’s sort of aggravating. I guess if you look hideous no one will look very closely, or something? Women have been expected to be modest for centuries and centuries and still managed to look lovely. There is historical precedent, she’s doesn’t need to invent the wheel, it’s not that special a problem.

    • cocohall

But among her peers with PhDs in neuroscience, she probably wins best dressed! I love Amy FF so much that I want to overlook this epic fail; but I can’t. Mayim has been in this business long enough and is smart enough to know better. You are so right – modest does not have to equal frumpy.

And Kaley Cuoco had the most atrocious eye make-up I’ve ever witnessed. What is going on with the Big Bang Girls? Is there an inside cast joke to see who can look the absolute worst?

      • Bexxx

As a neuroscientist, I PROMISE my colleagues and I dress better than that! Leaps and miles!

        • Chickadeep

I was gonna SAY. I worked at an Ivy Grad School (Public Health) for years and even the statisticians dressed better than that for fancy occasions. No bordello looks to be found. Even in the 90s, when one could get away with such things.

I really do wonder why she wears what she wears. I lived near an Orthodox community in Boston for years and saw plenty of modest outfits with the right kind of razzle-dazzle (if that’s what they were going for) or elegance: long gowns with bolero jackets or fitted cashmere cardigans with beading, long sleeves (sometimes sheer, sometimes not), three-quarter fitted sleeves with formal gloves and big stacks of pretty bangles, vintage-inspired long-sleeved gowns with boat necks and statement necklaces. How about an edgy Lady Tux a la classic YSL, with a silk top, close-toed pumps, a quilted clutch and great jewelry? Why she’s wearing something that looks like it took inspiration from Miss Piggy’s dress-up box is beyond me.

        • cocohall

Sorry! I shouldn’t stereotype! I’m sure you look better. :0)

        • ThesisMonkey

        • DuBey2

I wish I could like this 10 times.

    • Kayceed

Yes! She needs to start studying Middle Eastern aristocracy for chic, sophisticated, fabulous but modest (in the sense of covering skin) finery.

      • teensmom99

She just wrote on the Kveller blog about a trip to Israel but I guess she wasn’t taking notes on how to be chic and modest. I think it’s not just the modesty issue: it’s a combo of a non-model’s body and an incredible lack of taste. I don’t mean that she has a bad body–but I can see how it with her broad shoulders, she needs real attention to what would work.

  • Anna

What was that? Oh, that’s just Rita Moreno telling Mariah Carey to, “Stand down, bitch!!!” OMG, thank you for showing up to that red carpet and for just existing in general.

Best out of this bunch for me are Kathy Griffin and Mindy Kaling. Mayim Bialik’s lilac taffeta has made my eyes and my soul hurt.

    • demidaemon

I agree. Kathy has improved by leaps and bounds in the past few years.

  • Rebecca Wilson

Mayim needs to call Stacy and Clinton and have them go back through her closet. She’s forgotten her rules.

  • NBG

Mindy Kaling for the win. Personal best for her. And she knows it.

Mrs. Hanks brought it. She should have told Mr. Hanks to hem his damn pants.

    • AnneElliot

THIS. He’s one of the richest men in Hollywood — can’t he get someone to tailor his tux? There is no excuse, he goes to EVERY awards show.

      Rita looks great, though.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

“Giuliana like she was a barely functional moron”. Well, she kinda is a barely functional moron.

    • megohd

I wish I had seen this. I didn’t find it on youtube.

      • H2olovngrl

        I searched, too. Alas, no…

  • carnush

All time best for Ms. Kaling!

    • Chickadeep

She looks FANTASTIC in Navy. It’s a color that was flattering on nearly everyone who wore it on the red carpet that night…I love that it’s coming back. And the fit on her dress was excellent. Snaps up for Ms. Kaling.

  • Are we not going to talk about Anna Gunn’s Breaking Bad clutch?

    • I want to know if that is inlaid mother of pearl, or glitter, or something else. It is really hard to tell from the photos. I loved it. 🙂 Much better than a tattoo tribute – those are nice, but not as awesome as this clutch.

    • raeb23

i love it…maybe she’s not that eager to move on yet

      • KinoEye

Yeah. I think it would be bittersweet, at the very least, to leave one of the best shows in television history. Even if the role was likely the most depressing and difficult of my career. I hope she gets the work she deserves in the months and years to come. She’s a fantastic actress.

        • carolclark12

Did you mean to say, “… of *my* career”? I just got a little giddy thinking Anna Gunn is KinoEye, commenting on TLo’s website!

          • KinoEye

Haha! No, alas, I am not the lovely Anna. I *was* on benadryl to control my allergies yesterday, so that’s probably where my delusions of grandeur came from. I think Anna probably doesn’t have the time to be as frequent a TLo commenter as I am 🙂

  • NMMagpie

I was scrolling the Mariah Carey shot, thinking it’s about time she stop… oh, the Uncles said it for me. Love!

  • sagecreek

Emma looks great, and so happy. I don’t even mind the shoes, she’s earned her little quirks.

    • Chickadeep

She’s so entertaining and so sure of herself that I’m willing to forgive her a whole lot; she’s doing what a lot of people only THINK about doing, challenging the tyranny of crazy stilettos, bear trap shoes and platform pumps. I actually like the dress a lot—the silhouette reminds me of that Edwardian thing, with the long, upside-down tulip shape and flattering bodice. I’d wear it.

  • Kelly

A rundown; yes! Can’t tell you how glad I am that you’re showing the downstairs Downton folks. It’s rare that the character actors get enough attention, so I love seeing Nicol and Doyle and Robb get their chances to shine. I’ve seen Lesley Nicol in interviews a few times, and she’s a riot; you can tell she’s just loving this whole hit show experience (and I want that coat). I’m not crazy about the Charlie Brown zigzag on Phyllis Logan’s gown, but she’s rocking that glam big hair. And Dr. Clarkson — now there’s a handsome man. (Glad to see David Robb up and about after losing his wife so tragically). They all look great (well, except for Kevin’s hems.) Sophie and Laura, too.

Mariah Carey, on the other hand, is just sad. And Emma Thompson seems to be using middle age as a chance to embrace her inner (and now outer) eccentric. Looks like that’s going to be her Thing now — “I’m now a woman of a certain age, and I get to be as goofy as I want!” (As a fellow woman of a certain age, I agree. I just don’t do it with ugly shoes.)

  • Sam Erin

Loving Ms Cate’s photobombs. Try it- it’s a glamazon version of Where’s Waldo? .

  • Jecca2244

double take on Rita Wilson. Not sure what their secret is but they always seem happy together. hooray for them. Who is Hannah Simone? Michelle Dockery boob flash always makes me uncomfy, not sure why. THAT is Mrs. Hughes?! WOW. interesting there are two women on this carpet in Berardi in the SAME shade of blue. I’d be a little PO if I was Amy Adams. Like Anna Gunn’s dress here way better than when she wore the nude Donna Karan Atelier at GG.

  • ashtangajunkie

Mindy Kaling wins. She looks frigging spectacular.

  • colleenjanel

I LOVE Emma for wearing flats! Finally someone had the stones to say “eff this, I’m not going to teeter around all night just because everyone expects me to. I’m gonna get drunk, and I need both feet firmly on the ground!”
The top of her dress is lovely, and I actually like the flats she chose. She’s even styling her hair better these days. It’s the hiddy skirt that ruins everything.

I can’t explain why, but Mrs. Hughes is my favorite look of the bunch. Well, except for Rita Moreno. Granny kicks ass, and she knows it!!

  • Me want Lesley Nicol’s coat.

    That is all.

    • Chickadeep

That green is perfect with her hair, but I like it for me, too. I’m coveting it right along with you. 🙂

  • emmessell

Mayim, take a look at Sophia McShera. This is how one can do modest without looking like an actual Victorian lampshade.

  • decormaven

Wow, Rita Wilson really turned it around for the SAG Awards. This outfit suits her to a T. Well played!

  • AnnaleighBelle

The best part about Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks on the red carpet is how much they really seem to like each other.

  • MoHub

    Rita Moreno for the win!

  • schadenfreudelicious

Has Mariah picked up the fingerless glove torch from Madaonna now?…Perhaps she thought it would class up her dress??…

  • Boobs Radley

Oh Emma Thompson. From the waist up, you are a WERQ! Why you gotta go full on Helena Bonham Carter cray cray from the waist down?

Rita Moreno: Bow down, bitches. I’ve won all the major awards. BOW DOWN.

  • PeggyOC

While I agree that Mayim’s dress is a horror from the deep, her hair and makeup deserve some props. That’s the best she’s ever looked, from the neck up.

  • aahlife

Lucky me – fabulous Rita Moreno is a friend. She is everything you perceive – multi-talented, beautiful, super smart and witty. I watched her acceptance speech with emotion – so much talent, so under utilized. She has great everyday style. She brought her family to SAG, her jewelry designer daughter wore a beautiful red spanish style dress.

    • UsedtobeEP

Please tell her that my kids think she is awesome as a former Muppet guest! They have never seen Sesame Street, but they adore her. I do, too.

  • PastryGoddess

I love Sofia Vergara simply for wearing actual jewelry on the red carpet

  • Poeta Paz

I want to be Rita Moreno when I grow up! Where can I get that leather jacket?
Sofia Vergara looks amazing. I love her hair with her natural blondish color.

  • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

Rita Moreno is my spirit animal.

  • heartbot

I love the blond girl’s facial expression in the background of Sofia Vergara’s photo.

  • Jaeda Laurez

David Meister did folks pretty well on this carpet. LOVE Rita Moreno. I love the jacket, I love the hair/glasses, AND the dress.

  • crash1212

Personal Best for Rita Wilson. I love Emma Thompson and think flats are an inspired choice…but THOSE flats? Michelle Dockery could’ve been saved by bringing that wide V closer and up about an inch…it’s a great idea, but it went too far.

  • This confirms that Michelle Dockery’s breasts naturally sit quite low. Why on earth anyone thought a plunge neckline was a good idea is beyond me. Looks like she forgot part of the outfit.

  • mmebam

Rose Leslie serving Wildling realness… #GameOfThrowThisOut

  • KinoEye

Safe and pretty RC — nailed it. Love Anna’s dress for tying into the theme of BB, though I wish it had been more of a “baby blue.” (The fans know what I mean.) Mindy Kahling and Rita Moreno win it for me, though. Can’t sign off on the Cuoco’s dress color. Looks like dirty bed sheets to me, but perhaps that’s the irrational hate talking. And Mayim, what fresh hell is this?!?

  • conniemd

Mindy Kaling is channeling her some Oprah. Women with curves can wear dresses that don’t hide their shapes and are more form fitting. That’s why I hated Melissa McCarthy’s empire waist dress. I can remember years of plus size dresses all with tons of fabric and no form. Love the way the draping wraps around the belt.

    • Jessica Freeman

Exactly. Accentuate the body, not try and hide it.

  • mjude

when I need to laugh today I will refer back to Mayim Bialik! LOL

    • Imasewsure

You can’t laugh at that… that’s just cruel… Gurl needs a fashion-intervention stat… didn’t she do a What Not to Wear episode once? Better get some emergency TLC help again soon!!!

      • demidaemon

She did. I think it took for everything except red carpet wear, which actually should be the easiest part of dressing if you really think about it.

  • Nan

When did Jennifer Garner turn into Melissa Gilbert?!

    • Chickadeep

      Cannot unsee.

  • Monabel

Rita Moreno. Can do no wrong.

  • Jessica Freeman

I don’t think Emma’s shoes are that bad. I quite like the top half of the dress, but that skirt is a mess.
Mariah’s level of delusion has reached epic proportions of late.
Kathy Griffin for the win this round.

  • LuisaNL

love love love emma thompson’s sandals. maybe not for evening wear, though. does anyone know where they’re from??

    • Sly

      Christian Louboutin

      • LuisaNL

Oh, I was afraid of that. Might be a little too pricey for my budget. sigh. But thanks anyway!

        • Sly

          No problem!

  • Qitkat

Note to Mayim Bialik, take a long look at what Sophia McShera wore, and call David Meister stat.
Mariah Carey, that is just tacky, gurl.
We get it Michelle Dockery, you are NOT Lady Mary.
Rose Leslie, whomever you are, ay-yi-yi-yi. Did you not look in the mirror? Your shoulders, your girls, your dress, all too droopy, sad and uninspired.
Rita Moreno and Emma Thompson, call me, I want some fabulous bitches like you for friends.

    • martha

I agree. Mayim Bialik would look fantastic in the David Meister gown.

  • jilly_d

The shoes might be bad, but that’s the best Emma Thompson ‘ s head had looked all season!

  • Lisa Dugan

Anna Gunn’s clutch is fantastic! What a cute nod to.the show.

  • As a lady with Grumpy Feet myself, I’ve always wondered: what *does* one wear with evening wear other than sky-high heels? Kitten heels? Ballet flats? Wedges?

    • Imasewsure

Anything other than what Emma Thompson is wearing… actually most non-sky-high heels from really good shoe companies are usually wearable… it’s the cheap ones (and the freakishly high ones) that will kill your feet (and back and hips, etc)

    • JeanProuvaire

I keep thinking some embellished pointy-toed flats, maybe like something jeweled or embroidered, might have looked pretty with Emma Thompson’s dress. I don’t think one can ever go wrong with pointy flats.

Actually, something like what Lesley Nicol wore in the last red carpet post I remember her in, sometime last year. Hers were like a pointy green brocade slipper. I would’ve rather she worn those again, or something like them, then the weird almost-flatform wedges she’s got on here.

  • Imasewsure

The Rita’s have it!! Seriously Rita Moreno is bringing it – a lot of it, mind you … but that is ok – she’s earned it!! And I’m starting to appreciate Sophia V even more because she is never boring!!

  • Tracy_Flick

I love Emma Thompson’s dress, and I’m so glad she toned down the “State of Texas Certified Realtor” hair.

    • sagecreek

Hey, the State of Texas would like to object!

      *looks at Dallas realtors*

  • DeTrop

Emma Thompson and Meryl Streep, separated at birth – taste wise. Is it something about being highly intelligent and first-rate in your field, that makes people not try hard in these instances? They don’t have to compete with ‘the hotties’ that’s for sure but take a look at Helen Mirren and be ashamed.

I can’t decide if these ladies have NO TASTE or BAD TASTE. I think NO TASTE is winning because BAD TASTE is at least fun.

    • bellafigura1

No, they are former hippies, and feminists, and they are conflicted about fashion.

  • SewingSiren

Rita Moreno. Everyone else can go home right now.

  • annmouse

As a Brit I have to say was pleased to see so many of the Game of Thrones cast on the red carpet at the same event but am disappointed with all the young female cast – even Emilia Clarke did not really bring it in the way she normally does. As for the rest I can only imagine that they are not really getting the gowns thrown at them yet and the top level stylists to really help them turn it out. Must do better

  • cowper

Laura Carmichael, so pretty! Go Edith go!

  • MM4321

    Mindy K looks fantastic.

Now that we have Lupita N’gongo, I just keep imaging how much better all those pale dresses (Hannah Simone, Isla Fisher, Laura Carmichael) would look on her.

D’you think Tom Hanks and wife actually know what each other looks like? What with the squints and all.

  • Cathy S

Rita Moreno is fucking fabulous. Rita Wilson looks better than she has in ages. Apparently, it was a night for Ritas.

  • Bree The Vole

Grown up Mariah Carey is an abdomination of nature and sign of apocalypse. May she never exist.

  • Kim Elmore

My brother & I couldn’t stop screaming “she’s ***82***” when I googled her. God DAMN she looks good. She brought the house DOWN.
    Mariah? Ew.
I know we’re not supposed to criticize faces & body shapes, but Ms Kathy needs to STOP w the plastic surgery. Now.

  • snarkykitten

Wait, what happened with Holly Hunt??

    • sagecreek

Hunter, not Hunt, but yeah. As some one said below, she needs a cheeseburger. And I know we are not supposed to say things like that, but someone said it before me, unks!

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

Definitely personal best for Rita Wilson. I think Elizabeth Rohm looks great. Kathy Griffin is probably beside herself for getting a T-Lo “Atta Girl”! Rita Moreno is a goddess! Mariah, well, it’s gotta be said, “of course”. I hope she sees pics from the event and cringes. She should.

  • Gatto Nero

Miss Emma looks happy for once on the RC. So nice to see her not in pain. More power to her, non-stylish flats or not. I love her for it.

    • Coolekat

Could she have not found something more appropriate than those sandals?

      • Gatto Nero

Probably, but I appreciate the gesture as an act of defiance.

  • LOVE David Robb’s velvet and plaid tuxedo.

  • Gatto Nero

Congrats to Elizabeth Rohm for discovering the only tasteful Marchesa gown in existence. She looks like a fabulous dessert.

  • Valdri8

Rita Wison’s hair makes me want to pull out my eyeballs and throw them at her for damaging my brain, but it is usually her hair AND her dress, so I suppose it would be just one eyeball and that would be an improvement. She has all the money in the world and she always looks like dog’s breakfast.

    • jjtxgrrl

      Is it THAT bad, really?
Course, She is a tad old to be sporting an ombre look…..
      Dogs breakfast. LoL.

    • Gatto Nero

Ombre hair is no one’s friend.

  • MaggieMae

Possibly personal bests for Mindy Kaling and Rita Wilson. Rita Moreno, thank you for making me smile this morning and reminding me of how awesome you are! I hope I’m willing to wear a studded leather jacket when I’m your age.

  • jjtxgrrl

You are starting to look waaaaaaay weird. No more plastic surgery for you!!! (hand slap)

Ugh. She seems too clever and such to fall victim to so much plastic surgery.

    • demidaemon

You’d think she’d be smarter about it too, since it nearly killed her once.

  • save_the_hobbit

Anna Chlumsky, that is a very unfortunately placed bump in the dress. Sofia just looks so…not like Sofia?

    • bellafigura1

      Anna looks superhero scary!

  • alyce1213

Not enough love for Julia Louis-Dreyfus! I think she looked fabulous in that dress, which was striking, simple and fit her perfectly. Her hair was so shiny, I was nearly blinded.
Kathy Griffin, Isla Fisher, Rita Wilson, Mindy Kaling and Sofia Vergara are standouts for me.
Mayim, oh Mayim. I am so sad. That’s the ugliest dress I’ve ever seen, like a bad cheap costume. Even worse than Rose Leslie in the Temperley London, if that’s possible.

  • SeppiChicago

“YOU KNOW NOTHING, ROSE LESLIE.” should be used for every single person who dresses like they don’t know what the fuck they’re doing. It made me laugh out loud.

    • Coolekat

      Instant classic

  • Jacqueline Wessel

Now see, I like Sofia Vergara’s necklace because the color goes so well with the dress it almost looks like it is part of dress, and that there should be some illusion netting holding it all together.

  • Jessica Goldstein

OK. Possible personal best for Mindy Kaling—very chic and flattering. I don’t actually like Rita Moreno’s, but I won’t criticize b/c I love her for having that much style and the woman looks positively amazing. Who cares if I like it? As for Mayim Bialik, here’s what happened: Orthodox dressing rules + lack of good style sense + lack of professional help. Given that the first two parts of that equation are set, she should really reconsider the third.

  • largishbearishAtlish

    Rita Moreno…bow down!!!!
Mayim Bialik- I don’t think I have laughed that hard at a dress before… I nominate this already for your ‘worst of 2014’.

Gotta agree about Mrs Tom Hanks- a great look (for her).
Is Rose Leslie trying to smuggle a snuggie into the theater? or shoplift a small heard of goats?

  • Corsetmaker

I’m a sad bra fitter looking at this lot 🙁

  • PeaceBang

Mayim Bialik’s gown is from the Belle Watling Collection.

  • Tanya Wade

There is no way I can criticize MS. Rita Moreno. This is spectacular because she is wearing the shit out of it.

  • ThatPeterG

Poor Mayim Bialik looks like a bridesmaid on “Gunsmoke.”

    • Suse

      OMG ~ exactly!

  • Yolanda13

Holly Hunter – “…we loved her most for talking to Giuliana like she was a barely functional moron.” Thank you! That was my favorite moment of the E! Red Carpet. And she looked great.

    • quiltrx

You guys make me actually wish I had watched, just to witness this.

  • littlemac8

Anna Gunn hasn’t left Breaking Bad in the dust. Her clutch is the symbol for the show!

  • littlemac8

    Rita Wilson brought it!!

  • quiltrx

I’m giving this round, per my scorecard, to Isla, Julia, and Rita…both Ritas, actually. I think if I could sit between them I would have a FABULOUS time!
ETA: And, ahem, Mariah? PUT THAT SHIT AWAY.

  • somebody blonde

That’s a lot of look on Ms. Moreno. Luckily, she’s Rita Moreno, so it’s not a problem.

  • somebody blonde

Also, while Mayim Bialik’s dress is beyond hideous, her head looks quite lovely.

  • amanda lynn

Rita’s dress was lovely. Standing up. Sitting down, it was flop boob and that’s all I could stare at when there were cutaways to her during Morgan’s speech.

  • allcapsERINN

    You GO, Rita Moreno!!

  • Judih1

Can’t Tom Hanks afford to have his pants hemmed? I don’t understand why he doesn’t have custom made tuxedos that he OWNS, cause this one looks like he rented it for the prom

  • Rose Leslies look could have worked with a good velt and better posture.

  • NBG

Rita Moreno’s Be Me outfit made my week. Yes, Abuelita, I do want to be you!

  • GinaGeo

I was just in Tombstone, AZ and I’m pretty sure that’s where Mayim got her dress.
