Zosia Mamet in Rebecca Minkoff at the Gotham Independent Film Awards

Posted on December 04, 2013

What is…

How did…

We can’t…

“Girls” star Zosia Mamet attends the IFP’s 23nd Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City in a Rebecca Minkoff dress paired with Carven shoes.

Rebecca Minkoff Liman Ruched Jersey Dress

Is it us or does she look not just cute, but really cute here? How is that even possible when she has a history of hitting the red carpet looking like a homeless runaway? Where did all this style come from? Sure, you could say that it’s not exactly tough to pull together and wear this outfit, but still. It’s pulled together. That is not a thing she’s shown any interest in doing before.

The dress is okay, but her hair and makeup look great and she accessorized with just the right kind and amount of jewelry. And those shoes are pretty damn awesome.

Should have left the hem longer (as on the model) but WOW. Gold star!

  • fiddlecub

She looks lovely! Not sure about the lip color, and she still looks like she hates the very act of having to share space on this earth with mere mortals, but this is easily the best she has ever looked. Who knew all it would take would be an LBD?

    • lunchcoma

No kidding. I’m almost inclined to be tougher on her from now on, because it’s clear all she needs to do to look good is not actively attempt to look bad.

    • rumcg66

She wears that exact same shade of lip color all the time. I call it “mom-mom Yetta red” after my ex husband’s grandmother.

  • Jeremiah Capacillo

  • Glam Dixie

That dress looks a couple of sizes too small.

  • Delia’s 2013. Excellence!

    • Supernumerary

Thank you, yes. I kept looking at those shoes and thinking ‘I’m pretty sure I’ve seen those for sale at Hot Topic’, but no, you’re spot on with Delia’s.

  • Nikko Viquiera

WHO IS THIS WOMAN??? and what did she do with our Zosia?!!!

  • hughman

I’m just shocked philosophy students even HAVE their own sorority.

    • JR Labrador

They sit around smoking Gauloises, while debating the meaning of “sorority”. And then do Jaegerbombs until they puke.

      • Sarah

Ooh, close. Iived in the house that served as the philosophy frat/sorority, and it was very similar, but there was more acid involved. And dropout hangers-on.

      • Qitkat

True Confession. I recall trying Gauloise ciggies way back in the day, on a student trip to Paris, nasty stuff. Then we all imbibed too much cheap French wine, more nasty stuff, and then took a bus trip to Chartres Cathedral, where some of us ‘might’ have joined those philosophy students. To this day I recall very little of that visit. Ahh, youth, it really is wasted on the young.

        • Sarah

One of my friends from aforementioned House of Ill Philosophy Major Pursuit (of which I was one of the Art School Dropout hanger-on residents) just announced the publishing of her second book today. So something must’ve come out good from all of that, uh, revelry shall we say? Youth isn’t wasted if you turn it into awesome shiz later on 😉

          • Qitkat

            Congrats to your friend 🙂
Not meant to malign all youth. Some of us just didn’t know how great we had it, til it was gone.

          • Sarah

Oh, I know what you meant! Just wanted to brag about my genius buddy 🙂

          • formerlyAnon

I work on a college campus and I want to walk around handing out cards saying “You are smarter, more valuable, more desirable (and better looking) than you believe now or could possibly dream. You’re entitled to a peacock strut or quiet confidence, as you prefer. Quit worrying and stop feeling guilty if you haven’t intentionally hurt anyone. (If you have, apologize and do better). Put in some work, be kind to everyone, do new things, old things, ALL the things, take risks, say no without guilt if you need to and enjoy everything that comes your way.”

Aaaand it would have all the impact that every true thing I ever read or which was said to me had on me. HA!

          • Qitkat

Why not do it! There might be that one in a hundred for whom that is just what they needed at a low point.

          • formerlyAnon

            That’s awesome about your friend!

          • Sarah

Thanks. She actually said if anybody told her when we were nineteen that she would be publishing her second book now, she would’ve laughed and smoked another joint. I told her that I would’ve taken a bet that she would be published back then, and won it, so she wasn’t as aimless as she thought.

        • fursa_saida

Honestly, I used to love Gauloises, but they don’t sell them in the US anymore. Alas.

          • tereliz

Gauloises always remind me of Valentine in Judith Krantz’s Scruples. Quelle tragique!

          • judybrowni

Haven’t smoked ’em since the ’70s, but still, the thought that I could never be that pretentious again is discouraging.

          • fursa_saida

            It’s appalling, isn’t it?

  • YoungSally

I like the proportions on the shoes but three (?) straps seems like a bit of a suspenders and belt approach to high heeled loafers

    • Ginny Ellsworth

The shoes are scared she will get away.

  • amaranth16

Obviously a personal best, and not only does she look good for Zosia, but she looks GOOD. Applause.

    • EveEve

Little Miss Troll hired herself a STYLIST!!!

      • Tatiana Luján

Does people really need a stylist for achieving this look? I could, with 50 dollars and a trip to Forever21.
She looks very good, but this is as basic as it gets.

        • EveEve

Deceptively basic. The shoes alone retail for over $1,000, tho I saw them marked down to $450 on the net. Hair (it didn’t color and curl itself), brow wax, makeup, gold rings, foundation garments (praise be!). All indicia that she hired some much-needed help.

    • Rhonda Shore

      most definitely!

  • alyce1213

    Look how cute!
Nice, sexy LBD, killer shoes that bump up the simple dress, and no sourpuss.

  • There Zosia, that wasn’t that hard, was it? A simple black dress, some killer shoes and a hint of a smile and you look freaking adorable. I think that hint of a smile means she knows it too!

  • And she is smizing! I even saw a really for real smile elsewhere. True story.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

She does look cute-keep it up, girl!

  • Kelly

I dunno — It’s too tight and too short (model’s length is better). Her hair looks dry at the ends and stringy at the roots. But still, for Z, it’s pretty good. Light years away from that weird leather bra of a few months ago

And call me bourgeoise, but I do like a smiling model. The gaunt, blank-faced zombies who usually populate runways just make me roll my eyes at the pretension of it all. (Not that high fashion can ever be without pretension, but still.)

  • HeidiKnox

Love the shoes but I don’t think the dress fits very well. Hair looks great, everything looks pulled together but she would have benefited from another fitting.

  • Imasewsure

Oh my gawd.. this bodes well for Ginnifer Goodwin then too??? We can only hope. Love this and covet those boots

  • LeelaST

Love everything but the shoes – side-Pilgrim.

  • AmeliaEve

Her eyebrows are groomed! I might faint.

  • TigerLaverada

I dislike the severe center part on her, Like Sarah Jessica, her face shape would be better complemented by a side part, I think. Other than that she looks really good.

    • alyce1213

Baby steps. The hair is next.

  • 3boysful

    Wednesday Addams all growed up.

    (But cute.)

  • nannypoo

And now how about a facial expression.

  • Glad to see her looking good on the RC. Cool shoes.

  • Trickytrisha

Holy cats on a raft… she looks lovely. I wonder what triggered this leap into the great unknown for her? Whatever did it, I’m grateful.

  • Mismarker

I am gobsmacked. She looks great.

  • Qitkat

    Next season on Girls:
We are now 50 years into the future, and all the girls are still the same ages.
How on earth? Why, they are all clones of course 😉
Zosia is modeling the standard costume of the day.
And she looks super cute, n’est ce pas?

  • formerlyAnon

Cute. Those are great shoes with that look. Not *that* impressed with the hair, it looks very much as if “no professionals were involved in the ‘styling’ – term used loosely,” but it doesn’t totally ruin anything.

  • MilaXX

I seem to recall posting a few days ago since she stopped trolling the internet she’s been popping up looking cute. “buff said.
    Well played Zosia.

    • decormaven

      You called it. BKs rule!

  • SophieCollier

Either she finally got a stylist, or took a friend with fashion sense out shopping with her. Either way, this is a good look for her!

  • quiltrx

She got tired of trolling us, didn’t she? She looks great! And those shoes are killer.

  • Cynica

I’m in shock. “Zosia” and “really cute” in the same sentence. I need to lie down.

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Oh shit! This is an apocalypse indicator, right?

Seriously, she looks great. She really is a beautiful girl and to see her polished and pulled together, yet looking like herself, is great!

  • Tracy_Flick

That, right there, is prettier and more flattering makeup than anyone else on the red carpet lately.

  • Nika E

The best she’s ever looked outside of Girls

  • MK03

    It’s a Christmas miracle!!

    • tereliz

  • ccinnc

Did she get her eyebrows shaped? Because her eyes suddenly look spectacular.

  • CarrieBaby

I’m more surprised that she’s smiling in these pics. Anyways she looks great. Love those shoes!

  • filmcricket

Dress is too short and ill-fitting, shoes are hiddy (especially compared with some others she’s sported – the lady has good taste in footwear, if nothing else), hair looks greasy at the roots and fried at the bottom, and yet: agreed. She looks pretty swell here. Great make-up.

    • Eric Stott

I agree-the whole is greater than the sum of the parts here.

  • e jerry powell

Still, whenever I look at her, I can’t stop seeing her mother. I can’t get any perspective on the look, because I’m seeing the wrong woman in it.

  • Lilithcat

The beatnik look is so 1960.

  • Nothing I can say will NOT make me sound like the cranky old lady I’m turning into so I may as well be honest – the fact that she’s got this in her actually makes me madder that she’s been running around looking ridiculous this whole time. STOP TOYING WITH US, ZOSIA.

  • megohd

hair and make-up work because she’s channeling her costar, Ms. Williams.

Dress is too short for me but she really does look worlds better than usual!

  • Carla_Charlton

COMPLETELY disagree about the shoes — the ankle straps are unflattering and look like an afterthought on the shoes.

  • Was she inspired by Kelly Rowland???

  • Aaminah Khan

Goddamn, she actually looks great. Attagirl! Encouragement snaps! Positive reinforcement!

  • Fatima Siddique

Hunh? Am I the only one who thought her dress was too tight and that maybe she did the cocker spaniel hair to be ironic?

    • marlie

She often sports the cocker spaniel hair, though usually it’s just limp and flat.

  • bellafigura1

It is great for her, although the opaque tights don’t work for me. But, yeah, I can at least look at her now without questioning her sanity.

  • BayTampaBay

I like the shoes but with that dress she to lose the black hose/tights.

  • I can only say two words: HAIR & MAKEUP. Awesome on her. Do that more, Zosia!

  • Tatiana Luján

I think the dress would look better on her if it were a size bigger, but her face looks beautiful, so I don’t really care.

  • RedRaven617

Is that the hint of a smile I see? Oh yeah baby, you really accessorized it right for once.

  • carnush

Beautiful! I want those shoes now please.

  • See, I like everything but the hair. I don’t know how else she might have styled it, but I just don’t think it does anything for the look.

  • Scott Cooper

    Sarah Jessica Parker’s influence spreads…

  • Sam Smith

She looks great, now &*(^&^*&^ smile.

  • CatherineRhodes

Sorry to dampen the enthusiasm, but IMHO… a) she ruined the lines of the dress by making it a mini, and b) basset hound hair in a dishwater color that needs at least an inch or two of split ends trimmed off. What works here is the awesome pair of shoes and the makeup.

  • crash1212

She does look all kinds of cute. She’s totally messing with us.

  • boweryboy

    Nope. Not feeling it.

  • mjude

    I want the shoes

  • marlie

I’m rather shocked! Overall, Miss Zosia looks pretty great. I have some quibbles about the dress length, those shoes are hideous, and she has cocker spaniel hair. BUT overall she looks like she made an effort with every part of this look, and for that she gets an ATTAGIRL!

    • MaggieMae

Agreed. Do you think she uses a stylist or is DIY?

      • marlie

I wouldn’t be surprised if she uses a stylist. She probably wouldn’t publicize it because it would contradict her “I don’t give a crap about fashion” schtick, but I think she pays someone to help her look as disinterested and unaffected as she does.

  • bluefish

In truth, she had no where else to go but up.

  • AzSportsGirl

PERFECT deployment of the black tights. And I lust for thoses shoes.

  • KinoEye

She looks wunderbar! Girl, this IS your look. Especially the makeup. One thing, though — I saw you smile on the cover of ASOS, Zosia. You looked a billion times better than you do when you scowl. I’m not usually one to tell ladies to smile, as I’ve heard that complaint far too often in my life, but you’re on the clock when you’re at these events. A flash of the pearly whites works wonders.

  • Tamara Hogan

Personal best for Zosia. She looks awesome!

  • sagecreek

I’m baffled at how many of you love the hair. That is horrible unstyled cocker-spaniel hair.

  • Dagney

Wow! She looks beautiful. THIS is her look. Truly, this does not look like she “tried hard too look like she is not trying hard.” She literally looks like she did NOT try too hard. The hair is smooth and brushed. The makeup is not overbearing, but still stylish, and the clothing is simple and elegant. Zosia, this is what effortless looks like.

  • Liz

Best I’ve seen her look. She’s obviously been punking you two.

  • Monabel

She is benefiting from the low expectations she has trained us all to hold.

  • grasso

She’s totally the 4th member of Haim

  • LondonMarriott

Up is down! Day is night! Cats and dogs living together!

  • The ghost of my 20 year-old self is dying to get her (ghost) hands on those shoes.

  • Too. Much. Hair.

  • LaSylphide

Wow, who knew Zosia was such a babe? Gorgeous makeup. Shaggy dog hair, but the color is good for her. But the dress is a little too short and a little too tight, and the shoes don’t do her legs any favors. Still, magnitudes better than usual. Keep up the good work, girl.

  • KT

Ha I thought you guys were about to rail on her, and I was thinking to myself, but she looks so cute! Glad we can agree.

  • heuristicvalue

Guuuurrrrrrllll. Yes. This is your head.

  • WHOA.

  • Calinda_L

Her face is the real life version of :/

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

      I love you for that.

  • jjjoy

i guess this is nice for her, but it looks like a F21 clubbing outfit. sry not sry

  • ShaoLinKitten

A decent haircut and she would be golden.

  • Jacob Bowen

    She has good gays! Finally!

  • Gatto Nero

The fit is too tight — see the way the ruching works on the model. And it’s too short, throwing the proportions off.
    Love the shoes.

  • andreawey

the best we’ve seen from her!
