“The Hobbit” Los Angeles Premiere: The Boys

Posted on December 03, 2013

Kittens, what better way to end the day than by gazing lovingly at a collection of dwarves, elves and hobbits (and one man) dressed in their very best?

Who takes care of you?

Dean O’Gorman and Aidan Turner

The suits are nice, but Dean’s shoes are both too light and too casual for his. And we’re underwhelmed by their matchy ties. Have a little fun with your ties, boys.

Otherwise, they’re a hot couple of dwarves.

Luke Evans

We’re not sure if this makes any sense, but the plaid is just a bit too agressive for this to work. It needs to be toned down a bit. Too shiny and too high of a contrast. It comes off busy and a bit too close to true ’70s fashion in all its tacky glory. Also: it all looks a bit too tight on him.

Martin Freeman (and Amanda Abbington)

Simple and classic. We’re not quite sure what’s going on with the shoes, but we think we love them.

Orlando Bloom

Enh. We find the tielessness and sneakers to be a bit pretentious, but it works for him.

Richard Armitage

Hmm. We think we’re supposed to wag our fingers at him for matching his shoe to his tie like that, but we think we like it. Very “school colors,” like he’s a sexy headmaster or something.

Mmmmm. Sexy headmaster.

Anyway. the cut of the pants looks a bit unflattering to our eyes and the sleeve lengths are all kinds of crazy, but this works, for the most part. It’s nice to see the boys all made the effort here. Brings a respective tear to the eyes of these two bitchy queens.

  • Noah

Tieless and sneakers does not work on anybody.

    • Vickiefantastico

Normally I’d agree, but I’m going to give him a pass on this one. He’s going through a divorce, and his soon-to-be ex is dating a billionaire. I don’t think I’d feel like trying either.

      • Noah

But is it so hard to put on a different pair of shoes your stylist picked out for you?

        • AnaRoW

He has a stylist? Then why does look the way he does most of the time?

    • decormaven

I get a very complicated vibe from him. I hope he steers toward a part that really tests his acting chops the next go round. Not a fan of this RC look.

  • Aidan B

I have been waiting all day for this post. Nice to see almost everyone made an effort. I’m looking at you, elven prince.

  • lunchcoma

    Richard Armitage. Yummy.

    • MilaXX

I like him, but I don’t think he’s looking yummy here.

      • lunchcoma

This isn’t him at his best, but I get fewer chances to look at him than some of my other favorite actors and am willing to compromise a bit. I think the natural yum factor still triumphs!

      • Coleen

I agree. It’s actually depressing me. Must go turn on “North and South” to feel better.

        • Aidan B

Siiigggh. The final scenes of that series reduce me to a puddle every damn time.

          • Mismarker

Love it. It is on Netflix now and I recommended it to a friend who later told me she didn’t care for it. I was like, “I’m sorry. I can’t be your friend anymore.”

        • Amber J

That scene where the carriage is driving away and he says “look back at me”..uggggh. Gets me every. single. time.

    • Tatiana Luján

I like that his hair is his natural auburn.

      • Mismarker

This is his natural color? I was going to post something about him looking like a “Just For Men” ad. Oops. I guess I just did.

      • GillianHolroyd

Huh, well, like Elvis, I think he looks infinitely better with black hair.

Edited to add Tom Hiddleston to that list.

  • http://piblet.tumblr.com/ Anastasia

Orly’s lost his spark post-Miranda……..but a tie and a nice pair of shoes is the first step to moving on.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1180174329 Elizabeth Phillips

It looks like Martin’s pocket square is attached to Amanda’s bodice.

  • alyce1213

A decent showing overall, but Orlando Bloom has douchefeet and no tie.

    • Sarah

I think “pretentious” is an excellent adjective for his smarmy self. I hath no love for this iteration of Legolas.

      • marlie

That’s exactly the word I used, before I read any of the comments.

  • fungstyle

Is it just me, or is Orlando Bloom slowly morphing into Colin Firth?

    • Fordzo

Yes, please!!! I mean, that’s a good thing, right?

      • fungstyle

        Absolutely a good thing!!

    • alyce1213

As Orlando gets older, his jaw line and the set of his mouth are becoming very Colin Firth-like. It’s a certain type of English face. But I MUCH prefer Colin.

      • Fordzo

I’d let either one put his slippers under my bed. I’d even let Orlando put these ridiculous clown shoes there.

      • procrastinatrice

Ha! Funny to hear Colin come up in this thread–he was my first celebrity obsession and Richard Armitage followed him years later. Yep, I have a thing for period dramas and their unforgettable leading men!

    • jilly_d

omg! never saw it but now can’t unsee.

    • JulieTy

No! Never. Period. Colin is the one true Colin. Always and forever . . . my Preciousssssss.

      • Fordzo

I will arm wrestle you for Mr. Darcy.

        • JulieTy

You cannot defeat me. I will cheat if necessary. ;-)

          • Fordzo

            I have arms like Popeye.

    • MissusBee

Without the Oscar chops (sorry Orlando, but I’m not seeing it).

    • Christine Hart

He looks a lot older all of a sudden.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I will cut Orlando (go, Legolas!) a wee bit of slack over going tieless, but those clown sneakers are wrong.
Please, more Richard Armitage-we need to see more of him.

    • anneland

Nothing has me more excited for this holiday season that seeing Legolas again.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

There are so many Legolas moments from the LOTR trilogy, but his surfing down the elephant’s tusk in Return of the King is so bitchin….

  • Anna Vasquez

Amanda Abbington has one of the greatest half-smirks I’ve ever seen in the 1st photo.

Also: Sexy Headmaster. Dammit, TLo! I’ll be closing my eyes and thinking of England tonight.

    • marlie

She beats all of the other ladystars in “resting bitchface.”

    • MK03

Her face just screams “Yeah, I’m here with Martin Freeman. Suck it.”

      • Cathy S

She’s touching my Watson. I don’t approve. Man, that sounds dirty.

      • julnyes

They both seem really pleased with the choice they made in romantic partner. I like that about them. Also their “Getting Together” story is all kinds of cute.

    • Snailstsichr

The slip of her hair is giving her Vulcan ears (hobbit ears?) in the second picture – which seemes pretty perfect to me.

  • Qitkat

Aidan Turner! He was such a good badass vampire on Being Human, Brit version.

    • MilaXX

      That Boxcar massacre though….

      • Qitkat

[Sucks air through teeth] Yeah, that was gruesome. Vampires haven’t really interested me since, that show covered all I ever really needed to know. I liked it for the interpersonal dynamics though, and the struggle that outsiders of any kind face.

        • MilaXX

I agree, I’m not a big vampire fan but something about the 3 principles sucked me in. I stayed with it even after they left and watched the show until it’s very end. The US version just didn’t grab me as much.

          • Qitkat

Me too (watched all of it). And I watched just one episode of the US version, and found it wanting.

          • MilaXX

Yep. US version was no bueno.

      • Rand Ortega

Holy Mackadosha. That freaked me the HELL out! But it made me love the Brit version waaay more than the US version. & don’t get me started on Russell Tovey. RAWR!

        • MilaXX

He’s got a new HBO show coming out

          • Rand Ortega

            OMG! Really? Dish!

          • MilaXX

It’s called Looking, half-hour dramedy about the lives of a group of gay men living in San Francisco. He plays Kevin, an accomplished video game wunderkind who has achieved financial and critical success at a young age.

          • Rand Ortega

You’re such a doll! Thanks! Looks good.

  • Fordzo

Let’s talk about these brown shoes, shall we? I just don’t think that brown shoes should go with a grayish-silverish suit.

    • MilaXX

I know many dislike brown/gray but it’s actually a fairly traditional pairing and works well when done right.

      • Fordzo

Could be my screen, too, because they are reading almost dark red on my monitor.

        • Tatiana Luján

They definitely look like some kind of red wine in my screen. I love it.

        • MilaXX

Wea re talking Luke Evans right? I’m getting chocolate brown for the shoes, but I had the same reaction to the plaid on the suit as TLo.

          • Fordzo

No, I was talking more about the Aidan Turner. Luke’s (we’re on a first name basis like that) are dark enough not to bother me. And Richard’s so closely match his tie, I’m feeling a little twitchy. But Aidan’s are downright annoying. But that’s just my humble opinion. Could also be the PMS talking and tomorrow I’ll be demanding that EVERYONE wear gray and brown because I suddenly think it’s the BEST THING EVAH!!!!

          • MilaXX

Yeah Aiden’s are a dark burgundy/cranberry color to me.

        • jayetyler

I’m pretty darn sure they are Cordovan (dark red/burgundy). My former preppy self cannot help but love them. (I lived in Cordovan penny loafers for pretty much all of high school).

eta: oops, thought we were talking about Richard’s shoes.

    • Fordzo

It has become clear to me that none of us is talking about the same person. We’re not even hallucinating about the same person. I had a small hit from Annabelle’s crack pipe. What is everyone else’s excuse?

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Orlando Bloom needs to cut that shit out now or he’ll be wearing stupid sneakers on the red carpet when he’s 50, a la RDJ.

    • marlie

RDJ is allowed to do just about anything, in my book, but Orlando will *never* be RDJ.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

So very true. The passes that he gets because he is RDJ will not be allowed Orlando.

        • tereliz

I give Orlando a temporary “no wife-veto” pass. Miranda surely wouldn’t have let him out of the house in those, would she?

  • MilaXX

Aiden Turner – YUM! I adore his accent. *swoon*
Martin Freeman’s shoes look a little butler-y but I like them
Orlando Bloom – Honey grow up. The no -tie, sneaker look only works if you are Alan Cumming or RDJ and your clothing has a bit of whimsy to them.

  • Clueless_Jock

When did Hollywood actors become so corporate?

    • Imasewsure

Since their publicists and studio heads took over (and they in turn were taken over by huge multinational conglomerates with really really boring corporate tastes).

Ugh…. kinda makes me appreciate Orlando Bloom and his RDJ shoes after all

      • marlie

Although… at least it means that the guystars appear to have made an effort on the red carpet, lately. I’ll take corporate over ratty jeans and a t-shirt any day.

  • giddypony

I am so happy to see the completely delicious Aidan Tuner…I’m such a fan of his I even paid to see The Mortal Instruments.

  • Qitkat

Mmmmm. Grown ups, no boys. More Mmmmm.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

This look is not the best to prove my point, but Richard Armitage is the hottest dwarf in the history of geek culture.

    • NMMagpie

      You got that right.

    • Amber J

Richard Armitage makes me weak in the knees.

  • kimmeister

I’ve never seen Aidan Turner in anything, but here he’s looking like Sheldon Cooper with a clue.

    • MilaXX

Being Human Uk version – He’s very scruffy looking but really good.

  • Tatiana Luján

Ian Mckellen didn’t go? He always wears something original and fantastic.

    • marlie

And he’s allowed to wear anything he damn well wants to wear, IMO.

    • Pupioso

I think he’s in NY for the talk shows.

    • Ginny Ellsworth

I think he and Patrick Stewart are in a couple of plays together in New York. “Waiting for Godot” and “No Man’s Land”. So, he might not have time to get away.

  • mrspeel2

Martin Freeman’s shoes remind me of the spats well-dressed gentlemen used to wear back in the early 20th century!

    • WendyD

I was wondering if he was wearing spats and I would be very pleased if he was.

      • Ginny Ellsworth

I think he is wearing formal men’s slippers. His socks read as the uppers for spats.

  • Heather

I’ll take a sexy headmaster any day.

  • Tatiana Luján

    More Martin Freeman, please.

  • Alexis Boucher

Richard Armitage can do no wrong in my world.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to look up Youtube videos of him reading poetry and sigh dreamily.

    • NMMagpie

Make sure you get him reading the proposal scene from North and South. :::swoon:::

      • Alexis Boucher

        Also? “Look back at me…”

I think I need my smelling salts.

        • NMMagpie

AAAHHHHH!!! That’s the best moment of man pain I have ever seen!!

          • Sarah

Not Armitage-related, but as far as man pain, what always gets me is that scene where Connery finds out Gere and Julia Ormond are cheating on him in First Knight. He looks super blown away and sad. I cry every time. Might help that I think Gere is a douche. But then, I tend to think Connery is too, so that’s good acting.

          • NMMagpie

Agreed. What always gets me is that who would choose Gere over Connery (asshat-ness aside)? No contest, especially with that accent. :)

          • Sarah

Indeed. And really, he’s the king in that scenario. No contest.

        • procrastinatrice

Dang, I came here to quote that line…! I should have known that someone would beat me to it. For me Richard Armitage is, and always will be, John Thornton. I am sure he wouldn’t enjoy to hear that, as actors tend to hate that kind of thing, but it is hard not to think that way when I regularly revisit the best scenes of the miniseries:)

        • Amber J

I love that scene. It’s my favorite scene in the whole thing, just because of the intensity in his voice and face..gah. I have to watch it again now.

      • Nonmercisansfacon

And to think I was slowly recovering from my North and South addiction! Now I have to go watch that last scene at the train station for the millionth time…

        • procrastinatrice

I dunno why, but that is actually not my favorite scene…it’s great of course, but my favorite is the balcony scene with Margaret, where she gets hit with the stone. And his conversation with his mother, after that incident, in which his mother grudgingly gives her blessing. Both Cusack and Armitage knocked that one out. of. the. park. In fact, it might be my fave mother-son scene of all time.

  • marlie

Richard Armitage wins this round for me, though Luke Evans is a close second (Rowr!). And Richard certainly sees to be packing some heat there. The boyd did a pretty decent job! Even Orlando, though his outfit reeks of pretentiousness.

  • Rand Ortega

    Richard Armitage: Sexy Headmaster. Yes!
Put me in detention, Headmaster. I’ve been VERY naughty!

    • Qitkat

You’ll find this hard to believe, but somehow I’ve never heard of him before. Can you recommend any of his other films/series so I can enjoy his awesomeness?

      • MilaXX

I liked him best in The UK Robinhood, he was also good in the first season of Strikeback. (also starring Andrew Lincoln), Spooks which I think airs here as MI-5

        • Qitkat

          Thanks, Mila.

          • Alexis Boucher

Jumping in… but also the mini series “North and South”.

          • MilaXX

Never saw that. Worth a looksee?

          • Tatiana Luján

it’s like Pride and Prejudice, in an industrial city.
The male lead is better developed (IMO) in North and South than in P&P.

          • MilaXX

Thanks! I may check it out.

          • Coleen

If you like Richard Armitage, Mila, I absolutely insist on this viewing.

          • Alexis Boucher

I really liked it. And Mr. Armitage is very good in it.

          • DeTrop

Oh yes. His John Thornton is to die for. Check it out.

      • NMMagpie

North and South. You can see it all on YouTube. John Thornton!!

        • Qitkat

          Thanks! You too @alexisboucher:disqus

        • MaggieMae

Thanks! Never heard of this or him. In my Amazon Instant Video queue!

      • Knightley

He was in the 2006 BBC series “Robin Hood” as a drop dead gorgeous Guy of Gisborne. And of course in North and South (the BBC North and South based on the novel, NOT the 1980s miniseries with Patrick Swayze). Also, if you watch Captain America, he’s the traitor that blows up the lab right after Steve transforms. Blink and you miss him.

All of these are on Netflix too. :)

      • GillianHolroyd

He was also in one of the seasons of Spooks/MI-5 but I had to google him here to make sure it was the same guy. He looks totally different with light hair.

      • Pupioso

He’s done quite a bit of BBC TV including North & South and MI 5 (both on Netflix). He had a short part in The Avengers and filmed a movie this last year Into the Storm which has not yet been released.

  • cmb92191

Maybe it’s just me, but I get a bit of Ryan Gosling vibe from Dean O’Gorman. I think it is the eyebrows. And I like the sext headmaster. (I’ve never seen headmaster like that- they are usually old and well, icky!)

    • Jacob Bowen

I TOTALLY get the Ryan Gosling vibe…he’s like the poor man’s Ryan Gosling.

  • greymain

I STILL don’t get these obnoxiuos tie clips….wtf???

  • Nonmercisansfacon

I prefer my Armitage in black (preferably in Guy of Gisborne’s leather) and with a beard (majestic Thorin beard) but I’ll take it! As I know you love Strike back, have you guys seen the first series starring him and Andrew Lincoln? I loved it and I wish next year’s last season of Cinemax’s Strike Back (sniff) could manage to bring him back, just to see him banter with Damian!

    • Tatiana Luján

The first series was really good.

      • Nonmercisansfacon

It really was! SPOILERS if you have not seen it. For a brief moment, I really wanted to be kidnapped by terrrorists and rescued (and hugged) by John Porter, nevermind the loss of a hand.

        • Tatiana Luján

          jajajaja.

  • Pennymac

Yum. And Mr Armitage has a very sexy twinkle in his eyes in that last pic.

  • BrooklynBomber

    You do, Uncles.

  • lobsterlen

There was a time I had crush on Mr Bloom but it looks like he is the winner of the douche awards.

    • jw_ny

ya know, I’ve been feeling the same about him as of late, but I saw him on Jimmy Kimmel live last night and he was styled cutely and was quite charming (even seemed clean). I think he was wearing those stupid sneakers there too, although they did suit his casual attire.

  • suzinrva

Where o’ where is Lee Pace? I think he would definitely bring some elven magic.

    • quiltrx

I haven’t participated, if you will, in any of these Hobbit films–I had no idea he was in them. He made my heart all pitter-patty in The Fall!

      • Shawn EH

He’s a pretty great Elvenking, too: those eyes!

        • julnyes

also he looks regal on a moose – which is an accomplishment.

  • jw_ny

Aidan Turner is adorable here…but man can he turn sexy on in his roles! :)

  • PastryGoddess

So did you guys share one tear between you? or did you each get to shed a tear?

  • Tricia

All kinds of yum– except Orlando. Martin Freeman is adorable x 10. And generally seems quite well-dressed.

  • chiubag

Richard Armitage is totally pulling a Hamm!!!!!

  • MannahattaMamma

Sexy headmaster. I’ve just found a new game to play…oh, wait, sorry. Can we all have a moment and hate Orlando Bloom’s very studied casual look? Feh.

  • Liana Brooks

All in favor of ripping their clothes off say, “Aye!”

    • Aidan B

Aye! Although I think Martin Freeman’s date might murder us if we got near him.

  • Fordzo

We interrupt your previously scheduled sausage feast to say that there are strange noises in my house (like a cell phone is beeping and vibrating) but my cell phone is right here next to me. Calling all kittens to come to my house with baseball bats.

  • Dennis

Orlando is aging very poorly for an elf.

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

Aidan Turner is a vampire, not a dwarf! I should probably finish up through when all the originals leave Being Human at some point.

  • Pupioso

Martin’s shoes look great. Amanda’s dress compliments well, very classic. Her hair is terrific here as well. The scruff on Martin’s face was also great (you can see it in a close up) and glad he didn’t shave for the event. Just enough scruff to give him an edge.

    • Shawn EH

Hey, that’s the bossy manager from Mr. Selfridge! I’d say “take that!” to the women of Downton Abbey, as she steps into the 21st century with loads of style! Had no idea she and Martin Freeman were an item!

      • formerlyAnon

They’ve been together for years and have two children.

        • Shawn EH

I can only imagine him with Benedict!

          • formerlyAnon

            Imagination is a beautiful thing!

      • Pupioso

Although they never have officially been “married” they do refer to each other as husband and wife. They do have 2 kids together and have been together over 11 years. A great couple and they are truly in love. Amanda here looks better than almost any other premiere I have seen. Her hair is just great and does her face justice. The dress looks great on her as well and shows great lines. Great choice for the two of them.

  • Frank_821

Yes I adore Martin freeman’s shoes

It;s funny how much people swooned over Orlando Bloom 10 years ago. I never could get excited about him. Yes he’s pretty but kind of generic. He reminded me of a young Errol Flynn but without Flynn’s star power/charisma

  • DaveUWSNYC

    RA – VPH

  • Mona_Visa

Huh. Bloom looks hot. The fuck is wrong with me…

    • Kate4queen

      It’s the Legolas effect. :)

      • demidaemon

I personally believe that, for the Legolas effect to take effect, he must be in legolas drag. So, for me, this version is no bueno.

  • PaperPusher2

I have been waiting forever for you guys to feature Richard Armitage. “Sexy headmaster”: my Christmas has come early.

  • YoungSally

Damn — I detect some sausage on the left in the third photo.

  • formerlyAnon

I do like it when a red carpet revue is entirely made up of men within the bounds of “attractive, indeed.”
Mr. Freeman needs to go shoe shopping with Mr. Bloom and show him how it’s done (or their stylists need to get together).
That look Freeman’s wife is giving him in the 2nd photo may be my favorite photo so far this week. Whatever it really means, if anything at all, it looks so “I’ve known you for ages and I’d still choose you.”

  • ‘Becca’lise Deveaux

Mmm Richard Armitage. I must’ve watched the proposal scene in North and South a billion times.

  • Presumptuous Insect

Nevermind the clothes–Armitage has got the VOICE, man!

  • fursa_saida

Richard Armitage’s pants nearly always look weird on him, I believe because he’s unusually hippy for a man and somehow nobody has figured out how to deal with this.

Because of my friend’s tumblr, I always think of him as “richard armitage: human disaster” (which is meant affectionately). This isn’t particularly relevant. I just had to say it to get it out of my head.

  • Milos Mom

Not one but TWO pairs of oxblood shoes…. LOVE!

  • Nazzzy

Oh god. I read ‘sexy headmaster’ and immediately had an image of Albus Dumbledore in pink lacy boxers in my head. Thanks for that.
