The only countdown that matters continues. Part 1 is here, darlings.
Angelina Jolie attends the premiere of ‘World War Z’ in Germany in a custom Ralph & Russo white strapless silk crepe peplum dress with button and rose gold detailing paired with Saint Laurent white pumps.
Okay, probably a controversial choice for some of you. We can admit that there were more eye-popping outfits on the red carpet this year than this one, but considering AJ has a long and boring history of dressing for the red carpet like she’s attending the funeral of a distant relative (lots of boring black dresses), and considering the way she shone a spotlight on her health struggles this year, we can’t do anything but applaud this bold, light-catching dress with its shape and its personality (two things her style tends to lack). It was a major step forward for her, even if she retreated back into safer dresses almost immediately. And we like that there’s some severity to it. Soft was never really her thing, so she might as well run with that hard and severe aesthetic. Her utter lack of interest in putting any effort into her style forced us to coin the term “Pulling a Jolie,” for those ladies who rest too much on their good looks when it comes to dressing themselves. We’re happy to say, she’s doing no such thing here.
Lucy Liu attends the 2013 Golden Globe Awards in Carolina Herrera.
We gasped when we saw it the first time and we’re still gasping now. It’s not fashion-forward or pushing any boundaries, but sometimes a princess gown really works when you render it in the right fabric and put it on the right lady. We have a feeling if someone like, say, Carrie Underwood wore this we’d politely applaud, but on Miss Lucy, it really comes to life. Ladystars are infamously afraid of florals on the red carpet because they can so easily go wrong in pictures, but here’s a perfect argument as to why more of them should take the risk more often. When it pays off, it really pays off.
Adele is honored with the MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) by the Prince of Wales during a Buckingham Palace investiture ceremony in London in Stella McCartney.
We can’t stand that thing she’s got on her head, but we’ve always been old-fashioned about potscrubbers that way. It matters not, however, because the dress is stunning and suits both her and the occasion to a T. We realize we’re stretching the definition of “red carpet” to its breaking point by including this look, but it’s a Personal Best both for Adele and for Stella McCartney. We could look at that gorgeous fabric all day.
“Mad Men” star Kiernan Shipka attends the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards held at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles, California in a Delpozo dress paired with Jimmy Choo sandals and EF Collection ring.
Another possibly controversial choice, if for no other reason than Miss Kiernan wore plenty of far more conventionally pretty looks than this. But with this look, we felt like her style evolution took a major step forward and even though the dress is simple and the style naive, we also think it represents a shift toward a more mature approach for her. In other words, she’s always been a budding fashionista, but with this outfit, she stripped the “budding” part of the designation away permanently. She’s a grownup fashionista making sophisticated choices. We can’t wait to see her evolve more.
“Mad Men” star Christina Hendricks attends the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards held at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles, California in a custom Christian Siriano gown paired with an Edie Parker clutch and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.
Did you ever spend time putting a look together and then said “NAILED IT” when you checked yourself out in a mirror? It’s an awesome feeling. Miss Christina’s got it written all over her entirely pleased-with-herself face. “Damn, I really knocked this one out of the park, didn’t I?”
