T Lo’s BEST RED CARPET LOOKS OF 2013, PART 2

Posted on December 30, 2013

The only countdown that matters continues. Part 1 is here, darlings.

10. Angeline Jolie in Ralph & Russo Couture

Angelina Jolie attends the premiere of ‘World War Z’ in Germany in a custom Ralph & Russo white strapless silk crepe peplum dress with button and rose gold detailing paired with Saint Laurent white pumps.

Okay, probably a controversial choice for some of you. We can admit that there were more eye-popping outfits on the red carpet this year than this one, but considering AJ has a long and boring history of dressing for the red carpet like she’s attending the funeral of a distant relative (lots of boring black dresses), and considering the way she shone a spotlight on her health struggles this year, we can’t do anything but applaud this bold, light-catching dress with its shape and its personality (two things her style tends to lack). It was a major step forward for her, even if she retreated back into safer dresses almost immediately. And we like that there’s some severity to it. Soft was never really her thing, so she might as well run with that hard and severe aesthetic.  Her utter lack of interest in putting any effort into her style forced us to coin the term “Pulling a Jolie,” for those ladies who rest too much on their good looks when it comes to dressing themselves. We’re happy to say, she’s doing no such thing here.

9. Lucy Liu in Carolina Herrera

Lucy Liu attends the 2013 Golden Globe Awards in Carolina Herrera.

We gasped when we saw it the first time and we’re still gasping now. It’s not fashion-forward or pushing any boundaries, but sometimes a princess gown really works when you render it in the right fabric and put it on the right lady. We have a feeling if someone like, say, Carrie Underwood wore this we’d politely applaud, but on Miss Lucy, it really comes to life. Ladystars are infamously afraid of florals on the red carpet because they can so easily go wrong in pictures, but here’s a perfect argument as to why more of them should take the risk more often. When it pays off, it really pays off.

8. Adele in Stella McCartney

Adele is honored with the MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) by the Prince of Wales during a Buckingham Palace investiture ceremony in London in Stella McCartney.

We can’t stand that thing she’s got on her head, but we’ve always been old-fashioned about potscrubbers that way. It matters not, however, because the dress is stunning and suits both her and the occasion to a T. We realize we’re stretching the definition of “red carpet” to its breaking point by including this look, but it’s a Personal Best both for Adele and for Stella McCartney. We could look at that gorgeous fabric all day.

7. Kiernan Shipka in Delpozo

“Mad Men” star Kiernan Shipka attends the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards held at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles, California in a Delpozo dress paired with Jimmy Choo sandals and EF Collection ring.

Another possibly controversial choice, if for no other reason than Miss Kiernan wore plenty of far more conventionally pretty looks than this. But with this look, we felt like her style evolution took a major step forward and even though the dress is simple and the style naive, we also think it represents a shift toward a more mature approach for her. In other words, she’s always been a budding fashionista, but with this outfit, she stripped the “budding” part of the designation away permanently. She’s a grownup fashionista making sophisticated choices. We can’t wait to see her evolve more.

6. Christina Hendricks in Christian Siriano

“Mad Men” star Christina Hendricks attends the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards held at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles, California in a custom Christian Siriano gown paired with an Edie Parker clutch and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

Did you ever spend time putting a look together and then said “NAILED IT” when you checked yourself out in a mirror? It’s an awesome feeling. Miss Christina’s got it written all over her entirely pleased-with-herself face. “Damn, I really knocked this one out of the park, didn’t I?”

I almost thought that Sirs T&Lo gave a wax figure of Angelina the honor of best red carpet look.

  • Verascity

I think that Angelina one is my favorite of the entire pack. Gorgeous.

    • kimmeister

And it wasn’t even for her movie! She was just being the supportive wife of the star and stepped out looking like that.

  • mmebam

Christina is giving me life! *snaps*

    • Stella Zawistowski

I will always love this look not just because it’s a gorgeous look, but because it’s the look that caused Ryan Seacrest to stammer, “A…Sargent…painting?”

      • mmebam

Oh yes, anything that makes Ryan Seacrest fall on his face is alright with me.

        • Evan

Me too. He introduced the world to the Kardashians by giving them their show, right?

          • demidaemon

Yes. yes, he did. Please weep in horror and shame.

      • Mary229

Thank you for reminding me of this and therefore making me smile in glee.

  • Claire Haley

Lucy Liu’s dress may be my favorite of the year. That Pre-Fall collection really turned me into a Carolina Herrera fan, with the florals and the houndstooth suits, and of course Lucy Liu improves everything she wears just by virtue of being Lucy Liu.

    • Sobaika

Same, it’s my #1. She took some questionable elements (florals, the braid) and made it werq.

    • butterflysunita

Lucy Liu looks amazing in almost anything, but she does look especially beautiful here.

    • Mary229

She’s #1 for me too. She’s pulling together elements that could have looked ridiculous (the flowers, the full shirt and the braid) and pulling them off so beautifully. It’s a stunning look on a stunning woman.

    • blogless

And my favorite of the year as well. I did literally gasp when I first saw it and my husband looked at me and I said something about her looking like a beautiful painting. Absolutely stunning.

    • John11581

I agree! I’m so happy to see it included on the year end best list because prior to now, the majority of people I know who saw it thought I was crazy for loving it as much as I did.

    • Sunraya

Of all the gowns I have seen this year, this one is one of my favorites!!!

  • Glam Dixie

I love all of these, and it’s hard to pick a favorite but I think Kiernan wins this round for me. She looks amazing, even amongst the likes of Lucy and Angelina.

  • Introspective

Christina and Christian together are in personal best territory IMO. Love the simplicity of the dress and the way it hugs and highlights her curves.

Angina’s dress is lovely. Im a sucker for white done well.

Adele looks fantastic here. Stella may have had an off day (which as a bizarro designer w/ a specialty in dreckitude means that she managed to make a lovely dress by mistake)

    • demidaemon

I love your definition of a Stella off-day.

  • Frank_821

Yes Love that Lucy Lui moment. I think gays around the world did a collective gasp. When a floral dress is done right it is ever so right. It helps of course the placement of the print is balance. It’s still bold and the dress is elevated thanks Ms Liu. Perfect symbiosis

  • Evan

Lucy Liu is giving Marie Antoinette realness.

  • Super_Red

I LOVE Lucy! :) That dress is breathtaking and she truly does make it sing.

  • Victoria Anzalone

These are probably my top 5 of the year! Loved each and every one.

  • Imasewsure

One of my favorite Christina looks of all time and one of my least favorite Shipkas of the year…
But I fell in girl crush again with Lucy Liu this year and that was the dress!! WERQ WERQ WERQ

    • kimmeister

Yeah, I think the only worse Shipka look was the dress with the phallic carousel skirt. And something cray-cray is going on with her hair here.

  • jilly_d

J’ADORE Lucy in that Herrera. Might be my favorite look of the whole year.

  • marlie

Angie almost always wears colorless and SHAPELESS clothes, so this is an “ATTAGIRL” for her. Lucy’s was one of my absolute favorites for the year. And Adele and Christina – both of whom generally miss the mark more often than not – NAILED it with these looks. Personal bests for both of them.

  • rkdgal

Lucy’s look is perfect against the Globes backdrop with the hedges; wonder if she or her stylist considered that…

  • MilaXX

Again, total agreement here. Happy to see Adele & Christina make the cut since both ladies so often just miss the mark for me.

  • Blair Sylvester

I’m impressed that Lucy can make that much dress work because she is a wee thing but she looks incredible.

  • David Gilbert

Lucy Liu is stunning anyway, but she looks outta this galaxy super-uber-mega-hyper stunning in that gown. Even when you know what’s coming, its gasp worthy.

  • Claudia

Lucy Liu is stunning anyway, but she looks outta this galaxy super-uber-mega-hyper stunning in that gown. Even when you know what’s coming, its gasp worthy.

  • @Biting Panda

Fight to the death between Lucy and Adele, for this round. Both were perfection. The others….meh, I guess.

  • Trickytrisha

Ms. Liu’s dress is prolly at the top of my favorite list for the decade. Love all the rest as well – it’s quite the range from va voom to teenage perky, and each worthy of their spot on T Lo’s list.

There is an exception, as our Uncles expected – Saint Angie. For me she looks like she had the Sydney Opera House miniaturized and molded into a dress (she probably has the $$ to do so). I suspect my irrational dislike for her and her ubiquitous brood might prejudice me though.

  • KateShouldBeWorking

All eyes were gonna be on Angie in her first post-mastectomy-announcement dress and I’m thrilled she crushed it.

    • decormaven

Ditto. The fact that she knocked it out the park with this one is affirmation of life indeed.

  • alyce1213

    Great choices. They’re all beautiful.
It’s the miracle of 2013 that Christina Hendricks made the list, and deservedly so.

  • susu

Love Kiernan and Adele; underwhelmed by the rest.

  • HeisenbergHattie

Note: Adele is 25 years young. That dress suits a much older woman.

    • marlie

Perhaps. But if you look at the other frumpy, aging crap that she’s often worn for public appearances, something that has a simple-yet-flattering silhouette and a really gorgeous fabric is a huge step in the right direction for her.

      • demidaemon

Yes 1000%. Compared to her Grammy’s dress, this is a huge achievement.

    • Evan

I think she’s an old soul, so I think her look suits her perfectly. Same with Florence Welch. I wish Adele would wear more colors though.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

So far I am in agreement about everything except the Jolie. Which renders me snoozy.

  • nannypoo

Lucy Liu’s dress here is one of my favorite dresses ever. And my second favorite here is Adele. She is always beautiful in my opinion, but this dress is gorgeous and perfect for her. I even like the goofy thing on her head. It seems like the right thing to wear for that occasion in the world of hats and fascinators, but I hope she never wears it anywhere else.

    • marlie

Oops. Responded to the wrong comment. :P

  • formerlyAnon

I am so glad Ms. Hendricks got the nod. While I feel like she (and Ms. Jolie) are usually graded on a curve, a steep curve, she didn’t need it with this ensemble.

If she’d worn it as a red(der) head I could have died and gone to heaven.

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

THe thing is, I’ve just spent the evening at the pub, and two round were Baileys and one round was Cuervo gold so I think my judgement is impaired, but I think Lucy Liu is a goddess and Angelina would be too if her makeup was better.

  • ShaoLinKitten

Does Angelina Jolie have an actual aversion to color? I know Billy Bob Thornton is an admitted chromatophobe, but does her dislike of wearing color predate her marriage to him? She looks so good in bright colors. It’s a shame she avoids them so actively.

    • lifeisastory

      Chromatophobe? That’s a thing?

      • ShaoLinKitten

        Everything is a thing!

        • demidaemon

You learn something new every day.

  • butterflysunita

Christina Hendricks looks gorgeous. And I agree with Angelina Jolie being on the list–she so rarely wears anything interesting, and she’s definitely pulling this dress off.

  • ashtangajunkie

I was so in love with Lucy Liu’s Carolina Herrera when I first saw it and I am so happy to see it on this list. And to see Christina Hendricks on a ‘Best Dressed’ list! A post-Christmas miracle, if there ever was one. She looked incredible.

  • Shawn EH

Christina is perfect! I’ve seen Lucy’s dress on a few “worst of” lists, but I’m with TLo, she’s a princess!

  • Sabin

Angelina’s dress is both awkward and frumpy to my eyes, but I still Flove the peacock dress on Adele (tho still feel it needs a wee belt),

    • lifeisastory

I just can’t get over her teeny little feets.

      • Carrps

Yah, totally. My eyes kept wandering to her dainty little feet!

  • ushoda

    Still waiting for Charlize…

  • lifeisastory

kiernan’s dress is really really ugly.

  • Therese Bohn

I loved Lucy and Kiernan’s dresses! And Yay! Christina is so fab here, it makes me happy to see her on the best dressed list — yet I can’t help but wonder if she’ll show up on you worst list too…(I can’t remember everything she wore this year, but there were probably some bad ones) Nonetheless, happy she’s here in that dress.

  • Vainte

I remember seeing the model in the Adele dress – the cut was nowhere near as nice. So Adele wins for tweaking a runway dress to perfection.

  • Diego!

I think Angelina and Lucy Liu won this round. Adelle and Christina following them.

  • AlisonS

I love that Lucy Liu gown. Maybe it’s my never ending obsession with Gone with the Wind, but it really is a gorgeous dress.

  • lundibleu

I love every one of these, but particularly Lucy Liu and Christina. The former because she took something that COULD have looked chintzy and twee, and made it work really well for her. The latter because… well, she just looks fantastic and not overdone. And, really, who could have thought that Princess Puffysleeves could’ve been the person to do that for her?!

  • Janet B

These all make me happy; Adele & Lucy Liu are my favorites.

  • Danielle

Lucy Liu is breathtaking. She’s making that floral fabric sing.

  • PeaceBang

I still get dopey with adoration seeing that Lucy Liu image. Because not only is it just perfection (and honestly, that print is insane if you think about how perfect the proportion and placement had to be), POCKETS. And the lady herself is utterly glorious and grinning. Thousands of love.

  • Sally Spannagle

So happy to see Adele’s outfit on here — I want to wear that dress every day of my life! And Christina and Kiernan… swooning for days…

  • Chickadeep

So very happy to see Ms. Lucy Liu’s floral fabulousness (still gasping after all this time) and Miss Christina Hendricks (finally taming the babyheads and shutting it DOWN) on this list; also thrilled to see Miss Adele M.B.E. (momentarily making me reconsider my Stella M hate). And no Best List is complete without Swinton (in Part 1) and Junior WERQ-er Kiernan Shipka. Nice work, gentlemen!

  • Jacob Bowen

Honestly, Lucy was in my least favorite category until recently when I saw a picture of it and thought, “Wow, I was way too jaded against florals”. That gown is STUNNING.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

I can’t believe I’m going to give the edge to Stella McCartney, but aside from the pot scrubber, Adele really nailed it.

  • verucaamish

I’m giving it to Christina Hendricks because of the slack jawed look of idiocy from Ryan Seacrest when she referenced John Singer Sargent’s Madame X and clearly Ryan’s knowledge of culture runs no further than the shows he covers.

  • St. Ace

I really like Angelina Jolie’s dress here, because it is a more interesting look than her usual red carpet dresses and sets off her curves very well. Also, great deployment of white pumps.

  • lIllllllllol

“We realize we’re stretching the definition of “red carpet” to its breaking point by including this look”

Actually, the red carpet at Buckingham Palace is where the whole concept of ‘the red carpet’ came from.

  • Guest

So glad you added Lucy Liu’s look to this list! I absolutely loved it and thought it was a breath of fresh air on the red carpet!

  • calimon

If there’s any room left for debate, I am surprised and disappointed to not see Jodie Foster in the dazzling blue Giorgio Armani gown at the Golden Globes included in the ‘best of 2013′.

  • Claudia Fernandes

waiting for the 3rd part, but it is remarkable how ladies pull it off more in emmies than in oscar seeing this results…the victory of the relevance of TV towards movies in this era, confirmed also by fashion care?

  • Emiliano Babarah
