T Lo’s BEST Red Carpet Looks of 2013, Part 1

Posted on December 30, 2013

Yes, darlings! It’s time once again for our annual salute to bitchiness! Strap yourselves in, because we’ve got a whole lot of opinions to throw at your faces. Granted, these are all recycled opinions, since we restrict our year-end lists to red carpet looks we’ve actually covered, but even so, if there’s one thing we’ve learned in our years of doing this, it’s that people like to get very angry and yell at you because you didn’t put the list in the order they preferred or because they think you “forgot” to put someone on the list that they were sure you were going to put on the list. In other words, it’s all about arguing, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Are y’all ready to form some opinions? Let’s get to it, then. And don’t worry, we’re following up with the WORST  RC looks of 2013, because our hearts are full of love.

Hit it!

  15. Angela Bassett in Rachel Roy

Angela Bassett attends the “Black Nativity” premiere at The Apollo Theater in New York City in a Rachel Roy dress paired with a Swarovski clutch, Rafaello & Co Jewelry, and Christian Louboutin pumps.

Frankly, we think she looks flatout perfect here. The only reason she’s not higher on the list is because this is a relatively easy look to wear – if you’re Angela Bassett and you’ve got that bod and that face to top off the look. The whole thing’s a salute to the idea of knowing your strengths and playing to them. No one does that “regal, sexy, and slightly dangerous” vibe better than Miss Angela and this ensemble plays to that beautifully. You can tell she loves the way she looks.

14. Hailee Steinfeld in Donna Karan Atelier

Hailee Steinfeld attends the 2013 Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City in a custom Donna Karan Atelier dress accessorized with Jimmy Choo sandals and clutch and Eddie Borgo jewelry.

A perfectly princess dress for a young lady? Why, yes. We’ll take that. Adorned with gold safety pins as a tip of the hat to the punk rock theme of the night? Perfect.  We’re not big fans of champagne or beige or any of the other colorless colors so popular on the RC this year, but this one just sings.

13. Cate Blanchett in Christian Dior Couture

Cate Blanchett attends the premiere of “Blue Jasmine” during the 2013 Deauville American Festival in Deauville, France in a Christian Dior couture gown.

Okay, this is where we’re likely to hear some grumblings. It’s like this: it’s a striking and unusual dress and we love her both for making such a bold choice and then for making it work on the red carpet. This isn’t a dress for everyone, but it’s definitely a dress for Cate and she’s making it her bitch here.

12. Jennifer Lawrence in Christian Dior Couture

Jennifer Lawrence attends the 2013 Academy Awards in a Christian Dior couture gown paired with Chopard jewelry and a Roger Vivier clutch.

This is the first of THREE scheduled appearances for Miss Jennifer on our year-end lists, something that happened with more than a few of our choices. This was the year when taking risks meant you got praised AND raked over the coals for your fashion choices. And while we wouldn’t say that this dress was really all that much of a risk, the fact of the matter is, she yanked that spotlight away from Anne Hathaway that night and never gave it back to her, charming the world by tripping up a flight of steps and still managing to look like a fairy tale princess while doing it.

11. Kerry Washington in Marchesa

“Scandal” star Kerry Washington attends the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards held at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles, California in a Marchesa dress paired with an Edie Parker clutch, a Movado watch, and Fred Leighton jewelry.

Miss Kerry is also scheduled to appear again on these lists, although her next entry won’t be as kind as this one. She’s serving up pure Couture Princess fantasy here; something she’s been doing consistently since she hit the big time, shattering our ideas about the imagery of the female African-American entertainer and eliciting melodramatic gasps from gay fashion bloggers every time. She’s a total knockout here.

    • http://thejoyfulfox.blogspot.com/ Laura

Wait…are you sure this is the “worst” list? O.o

    • Frank_821

Yes interesting choices. I’m actually looking more forward to your worst list

      • ShaoLinKitten

I agree! Their worst list is always so epic, and so hilarious.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Kerry Washington’s Marchesa is the only quibble I have at this point. Agreed it is Couture Princess Fantasy, but I hate the bandages around the bodice.

      • Super_Red

I was coming to say the exact same thing- I’d have to go back through the year but she hit it out of the park so many times I would have preferred a different look to be on the list. This dress is just weird and awkward. Marchesa often doesn’t work for me. I agree with JLaw being on the list for the reasons TLo said- it was definitely an impact look, therefore a great overall “look”… that said, as much as I usually love Dior, I really dislike this particular dress. Can’t deny it being a top look of the year, though.

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

And compared to *every other dress* Dior put her in, this one is a clear winner!

      • Sobaika

JLaw is mine, makes me want to hit the snooze button. It’s inoffensive but the only interesting bit was what she did with the necklace. I’ll take bandages over that any day.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Agreed on Hailey – perfect! And JLaw – stunning! I can go there with Kerry – that woman…. she is so so beautiful.
The others don’t rev my engines as much. But eager to see what you boys have up your sleeves for the rest of this list.

    • colleenjanel

JLaw in the Dior is one of the overall iconic moments of the year, and definitely deserved a nod. The image of her on crumbled on the steps of the stage with her hand to her face? I want it made into a painting.

    • @Biting Panda

Oh praise cheeses, you’re back. Last week was painful. A weekend with no lounge and no kittens was torture. Do you know how much time I’ve had to spend focused on my family?

The Cate appearance reminds me that this was one of the last times, this year, that I’ve loved what she’s brought to the carpet. She’s faltered a bit this year.

I have no real arguments. This wasn’t my favorite Kerry W dress, but only because it’s giving me a toothache.

      • conniemd

I like this Kerry W dress, but my favorite was the horse dress she wore to the premiere of Django Unchained. I think she looks better in the simple elegant than in the Marchesa overwrought look.

        • Lauren Hall

Agree. The bottom of the Marchesa is pretty, but the bust looks like she just crawled out of the ocean and got caught up in some seaweed.
For another Kerry W look this year, I really liked her Oscar dress (pink with the gold top)

    • Victoria Anzalone

I still covet that Donna Karan safety pin dress. Head to toe perfection on Hailee.

    • Fraggle

Can’t agree with Kerry W. But the rest for sure. Looking forward to the next choices you make

    • Diego!

Now yes. I agree with you. I wanna see top 10! :D

    • marlie

Great start, gents! I think JLaw’s is a little “too much dress,” but it’s certainly an eye-catching look. And I don’t think ANYONE else could have made that dress work the way that Cate did.

      • bellafigura1

Agree with both sentiments. JLaw’s dress doesn’t work for me, it’s a silhouette I find kinda silly, actually.

    • Chickadeep

Angela Bassett could look fierce in a Hefty Bag, so I agree she should be graded on a curve—but she does look fab.

Hailee Steinfeld looks every kind of adorable in that safety pin dress. JLaw’s dress is lovely and fits her like a glove (a big, easy-to-trip-over glove) but I can’t help think how much more striking it would be in an actual color.

OTOH, Kerry Washington is really working the pretty pretty princess blush in her Emmy gown—I think the gold helps?

Adore the Hell out of Cate Blanchett, but no. That thing belongs on the back of my Nana’s living room couch. Sorry!

    • Latin Buddy

I agree with the list…but back to the more pressing issue, TLo, PLEASE never go off the grid for so long, especially during the holidays when I’m trying to avoid my mom and dad’s questions about why I don’t have a boyfriend (I’m blessed that they are supportive of their gay son…but not THAT supportive). I kept coming onto the site multiple times over the holidays hoping for a post of salvation!

      • marlie

We were all in withdrawal this past week. ;)

        • MilaXX

I was in a corner twitching by Friday.

          • demidaemon

            The same. THE SAME!

      • @Biting Panda

I kept popping in, hoping they’d drop a little surprise post in. I cruised the last lounge post like a desperate man looking for the last drunk girl at a bar to pick up. Pathetic.

        • http://www.GiftedCollector.com/ The Gifted Collector

Not only was I trolling the last lounge post for the past week, I can’t get the home page. It says “Nothing found here.” Anyone else having this problem?

Happy new year to Amanda, Mary Lu, Sarah, marlie, Mila and all my anonymous cyber friends!

          • @Biting Panda

And to you, Sugar! Nope, I’m not having issues. And my mobile kinks seem to have been worked out as well.
            CHEERS!

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I know. I was trying SO HARD not to begrudge them a bit of holiday R&R but I HAVE NEEDS TOO.

      • cocohall

Thank you for sharing this. You are performing a mitzvah. It is ALL I can do to keep myself from asking me son the status of his love life every time he calls or comes home from college. I usually last about 10 minutes and then give in, lest he thinks I don’t care! Now I’ll think of you and try to contain myself for at least 30 minutes. I predict failure. And blessings on your supportive parents. Intrusive, but supportive. :0)

      • StellaZafella

I can switch my computer from viewing newest posts now…I confess I’ve been lurking in the site all week for anything posted within the day….
Congrats on your nosy but supportive parents, it’s a pain many of us would have gladly endured in our youth.

      • DTLAFamilies

As a Puerto Rican woman, this cracked me up: “Pero mijo, there are so many nice boys out there. ¿Por qué no me has dado nietos todavía?

      • marlie

Also, I endured the question about a boyfriend for YEARS, and now that I have one, I get CONSTANT questions about when I’m getting married and having a baby. So, it never ends, unfortunately.

      • alyce1213

They just want you to be happy.

      • formerlyAnon

Be careful what you wish for. It may not start till you hit 30, depending on your family, but as soon as you have a steady fella (that they don’t hate and despise with the heat found on the surface of the sun) the not-so-veiled inquiries about marriage/babies start. And if your folks are supportive enough to worry that you don’t have a steady, I am guessing that you won’t be entirely off the hook on those.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I think that Cate is the only woman who could wear that Dior dress. I still see Granny squares when I look at it. As for Angela Bassett, she is just killing the RC in that look and she knows it-snaps!
      Love JLaw.

    • Anna_Cecilia

Such is the power of Cate’s Rhodes Scholar AND PhD-level fierceness that she can indeed, make Dior “her bitch,” when so many others have failed spectacularly (Jennifer, Marion, etc). Waiting with bated breath for the Worst RC looks!

    • PastryGoddess

What a wonderful start to the day. Missed you guys

    • Dan_In_NYC

I’m always shocked that none of the Miss Universe ensembles make it onto this list… ;) Welcome back from the holidays, boys!

      • StellaZafella

Rating pageant costumery would be fun to see…but it doesn’t do justice to even the WORST attempts at red carpet fashion so what would be the point?

      • MilaXX

I suppose they’re excluded because the looks are worn on a true RC. That’s a look that’s acceptable only in the pageant world.

    • Jessica Freeman

Hello again Uncles and Kittens! Missed you all…

      Loving the list so far…

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I too missed my fav uncles and fellow BK’s-I checked back throughout the week, feeling like Tiny Tim, staring wistfully at the lovely toys….

        • Jessica Freeman

I’m not even ashamed of how many times I would click the bookmark and say a prayer there would be a new post. I literally let out a squee when this was posted.

          • @Biting Panda

Ditto. I was tickled to meet up with a couple of BK’s now that I have finally joined the world of Twitter. Swiftly Tilting Planet and I drank ourselves silly, lounge or no. Of course you can be assured it will cease to be a relevant social media if I’ve finally shown up there.

            • marlie

I really, *really* need to make a trip to your neck of the woods. It would be epic. I actually saw some friends from down there over the weekend, and have promised a visit in the spring.

            • @Biting Panda

Yeah, you do! Get down here. We’ll drink, we’ll snark, it will be brilliant.

    • Hetha Innis

Just seeing a post from you (and bonus that’s it’s a best of list!!) makes me feel grounded again! Glad you took some time off and hope you are enjoying the holidays.

    • Super_Red

Dearest TLo, I know that this isn’t related to this post, but pretty please with daleks on top… is there a Time of the Doctor post coming? :)

    • Judy_S

I am thinking there should be a separate 5 best and 5 worst just for Cate Blanchett…

      • par3182

This one could be on both.

        • Judy_S

Yeah, I was thinking there might be some overlap.

    • fortuna

OMG how much do I love Cate Blanchett in that Dior gown? Are you kidding me? I want to see the details in that textile. Spectacular.

    • docholly

1st thought on the Cate Blanchett dress: Why is she wearing pogs (you have be alive in the 90’s to know that reference) 2nd thought: what is she hiding under that? 3rd thought: at least it was Adele or worse Melissa McCarthy since “stylists” always put us fat chicks in coutour by Omar the tent maker or from some fabric left over from an upholstery shop.

    • Jackie4g

Oh we are so glad you’re back! Hope you enjoyed your time away from us and got to stay up late and sleep in a bit, as a part of your of holiday celebrations. Clearly, you have been missed, and you are welcome back with all the cyberhugs we can muster.

    • cocohall

I’m so happy you are back that I find myself agreeing with all your choices. Especially Miss Bassett. She is Glorious. It is slightly harder to get on board the Blanchett bus, but she WAS wearing Dior in France. So venue points. And after seeing the movie, I’m guessing our girl Cate wanted to clearly delineate the line between herself and the character. Although very high fashion, her character would never have worn this dress. Cate was brilliant in the role, but if it were me, I wouldn’t want anyone to confuse me with that part. That scene at the end where she is sitting on a bench mumbling to herself still haunts me.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

If Cate doesn’t win the Oscar for Blue Jasmine I’m going to be mightily upset-she made that movie.

    • Judy_J

The “worst” list is the one I’m waiting for. Since Mr. Blackwell is gone, we need you more than ever.

    • frannyprof

I disagree with the Kerry Washington choice. And where’s Tilda? Don’t even tell me she’s on the worst dressed list. Is the apocalypse upon us?!

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I have hope that St. Tilda will show up higher on the Best Dressed list.

      • MilaXX

it is part 1, let’s see what else is coming down the pike

    • Danielle

JLAW in Dior tripping up a flight of stairs and Actual Disney Prince Hugh Jackman coming to her rescue was my favorite thing of 2013.

      • marlie

“Actual Disney Prince Hugh Jackman.” Hahaha, so true!

      • bitchybitchybitchy

How did I forget that Hugh Jackman came to JLaw’s rescue? Oh, right-I must have temporarily blacked out seeing Hugh!

    • bertkeeter

Pretty boring! Lets hope 2014′ has more to offer! Rachel Roy….Really? HA!

    • Tanya Wade

Young Hailee’s safety pin dress and Cate’s homage to crochet/quilting/whatevs are two of my favorites as well, so you will hear no quibbling from this peanut gallery. Fashion should be fun, and these two seem to get that.

    • carnush

Welcome back uncles! I missed you so.

    • MartyBellerMask

      Yippee!!

    • ashtangajunkie

I love these lists, I love reading what everyone has to say about the choices. Angela Bassett is daring us to disagree with her appearance on this list and I for one, will not cross her.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Word. Ms. Bassett has that look on her face that so clearly says “Don’t f**k with me”, and I most definitely will not. Besides, she looks terrific in that dress.

    • Janet B

Still love Hailee’s dress, especially for the Met Gala.
Can’t argue with any on this list.

    • decormaven

Yay! TLo are back, and so are the BKs! I know Ms. Kerry’s look is treacly sweet, but I still love it. Must be a post-holiday confectionary affect.

    • SewingSiren

Cate and Hallie are my favorites. I have always loved pins used as jewels, and this is particularly good. Cate’s is a dress that few could or would even attempt to wear. Pure art.

    • Imasewsure

Loved the Cate.. did not like the Kerry W look but it’s a quibble

    • MilaXX

Welcome back! So far I have no complaints with the list. I’m sure that will change later on so for now I’ll bask in the glow of being in agreement.

    • pookiesmom

I hope Lupita takes the crown as #1 for…well…basically anything she’s worn, ever.

    • alyce1213

My only disagreement is Kerry Washington in Marchesa. I do not like that dress. She looks about as good as anyone can look in a Marchesa, but that doesn’t make it a best look. I do believe she’s WERQ’d other more worthy looks throughout the year.

    • CatherineRhodes

For two advocates of color on the RC, you’ve spotlighted 2 dresses that are black and 3 that are beige. Just sayin’.

      • StellaZafella

They’re not the best of the best but just because they’re not colorful doesn’t mean they don’t rate when done well…just sayin’.

        • demidaemon

It also depends on the skin color and silhouette of the dress…color is only one part of the equation…just sayin’. ;)

    • Trickytrisha

YES to all of these! Love Cate, Hailee, everyone. Kerry’s dress is a tad too Marchesa.

    • CommentsByKatie

So glad that the Lucy Liu and Kerry Washington looks are included! Lucy Liu in that Carolina Herrera is my favorite red carpet look OF ALL TIME and I just adored Kerry Washington’s dress, as well. Hooray! I love the end of the year T Lo lists and I can’t wait to see the rest! FASHION DRAMA CAPE IS ON AND ACTIVATED LET’S DO THIS

    • elzatelzabelz

Cate’s red dress was a Best, this one was a tent.

    • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

I love Blanchet’s dress, but there’s this nagging feeling that it looks like every Girl Scout badge I’ve ever earned x 100.

      • rondele

I don’t like the dress at all, but Girl Scout badge is perfect lolol. Thanks!

        • Melvis Velour

Thank God I wasn’t the only one who thought the same thing about the badges…
Best wishes for a fabulicious 2014 full of BK bitchiness to everyone!

      • StellaZafella

…and I soooo want to be in Cate Blanchett’s scout troop!

    • NYCGlamourpuss

I can’t decide which look I love more – Kerry’s, because it’s just SO beautiful. I remember falling in love with that dress when you first posted it. Or Hailee’s look – it’s such a lovely dress, and I had no idea those were safety pins until you mentioned it! For that reason alone, for giving it that punk rock edge without losing a single bit of the loveliness, I have to give the nudge to Miss Hailee.

    • guest2visits

Loved that dress too and Kerry looks amazing in it…. but does it ever make that red carpet look cheesy; needs to be tripping through the garden instead. The Donna Karen on Hailee is also a favorite. Reminds me of some chrysanthemum wallpaper my grandmother had for her dining room.

    • andreawey

Cate looks like she’s wearing a granny squares quilt…..
