Richard Armitage in Vivienne Westwood at “the Hobbit” Madrid Premiere

Posted on December 13, 2013

With all the flashes going off, it’s hard to tell if all these blues actually go together all that well, but we really appreciate the efforts of whoever put this look together. We’re suckers for tone-on-tone and we’re suckers for plaid pants.

Richard Armitage attends the premiere of “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” at the Kinepolis cinema in Madrid, Spain in a navy Unconditional jacket paired with navy and grey plaid Vivienne Westwood pants.

We wish he’d get his hand out of his pocket and buttoned his jacket so we can get a better sense of how this looks on him, but even if the various blues are fighting with each other, we can’t help but applaud a male star in an outfit with some color and pattern to it. Usually pattern in an American male star’s look comes in at the tie and shirt. It’s refreshing to see it come in at the pants. Not every man can pull them off, but he’s got the right build for them and they look rather nicely fitted. Love the belt.

I guess I’ll be the TLo apostate clamouring for him to button his clothes.

    • marlie

He can button everything for a few minutes, just so we can see how the outfit looks. And THEN he can proceed with the UNbuttoning.

  • Domo_Konnichiwa

    Shine, shine on!

    Sing it with me, now!

  • ConnieBV

Pants are too fitted at the legs and the effect makes his bottom half look very Spongebob. A fan of the color combo, but the fit is off.

  • Glam Dixie

The color of the tie bugs a bit but I really like this. I wish he’d shaved.

    • kimmeister

Yes, the blue of the tie is the one that really doesn’t go with the rest of them.

  • Emily Smith

Soooo who saw the movie already? I went to the midnight premiere. Thranduil sure is a prissy pretty princess diva.

  • He’s the English Professor at my all girls college that everyone wants to nail.

    • Judy_S

My husband IS an English professor and this is how he dressed in those days…

      • You may now be the most envied bitter kitten!

        • Judy_S

It was a long time ago. Now he favors sweatpants.

  • Chuck Barthelme

I feel a little bad for him in this picture. Love the outfit, but man does he look like he’s tired of the pole dance.

  • MilaXX

With the exception of Orlando, it seems that all the men in this movie are putting in effort for this pole dance. I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt and say in person all these blues do indeed work together.

  • marlie

I think I love the pants, but I wish we could see the whole “finished” look.

  • Melanie

that’s an unhealthy looking sweat if i’ve ever seen one – homeboy either has a slight fever or went skiing right before getting his picture taken. either way, i empathize.

    • barbarienne

IIRC, homeboy does bikram yoga. He’s used to sweating.

      • Melanie

ah that makes sense! bikram does impart some truly next-level sweating abilities.

  • From the shoulders up he’s looking like a skeevy used car salesman, and that pains me. Excellent choice of trousering though.

  • conniemd

He looks gorge. Love the navy plaid pants, wish the picture was less dark so I could see the pattern better. Hard to tell how the tone on tone goes with the pants.

    • formerlyAnon

I noted the tie clip placement occasionally hitting correctly as well, of late. I think sometimes they’ve been adjusting placement to make sure the clip is clearly visible, so I won’t give credit for this one until I see that it didn’t move up when he is photographed wearing a buttoned jacket.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Ewww… these are not flattering pics. Flu bug? Go home…

  • zuzu

    Ah, Smokin’ Hot Thorin Oakenshield.

    • jtabz

My hardcore Tolkeinite husband was displeased at the sexy Thorin casting. I … mind less.

      • formerlyAnon

Your hardcore Tolkeinite husband will be seriously distressed whilst viewing the movie, I fear. You may want to administer a mild sedative and make sure he’s taken his meds for any conditions exacerbated by outrage, agitation or a sense of grievance before viewing.

As much as I love Tolkien, I am completely OK with Legolas showing up in this one, and I can live with the female elf, too.
I just wish that Peter Jackson could be convinced that MORE is not necessarily better in terms of the length of these films.

    • WendyD

I went to a Hobbit marathon last night and good lord he is glorious to look at in 3D.

  • Mary Lauer

I don’t care if his tie doesn’t go, he still makes MY pants move! 😎

  • Conniepop

He can wear whatever he wants, whenever he wants. I will say that he is looking a wee bit tired on this dog and pony show.

  • SewingSiren

    Very well done.

  • jw_ny

I love those pants! I’d add them to my Christmas wish list, but know I wouldn’t get them 🙁

In the close up pic of him, the tie color seems more subtle and the jacket color seems a deeper blue…thus, I think the outfit as a whole works well.

  • Agador Spartacus

Oh my. Richard Armitage. Be still my heart!

I love everything I’m seeing here – especially the plaid pants.

  • Tatiana Luján

One of my personal quibbles with men’s clothes is that I don’t like when the belt is brown and the shoes are black.

    • conniemd

The brown belt looks really sharp with the blue tones. Should have had brown shoes, too.

    • Carrie

According to his stylist (@IlariaUrbinati), the shoes *are* brown – the photos are just too dark for us to see it.

  • Michael_Jones

    Yum. (That is all.)

  • NMMagpie

    Fanbloodytastic. Perfect.

  • schadenfreudelicious

If the kittens have not seen him in North and South…well get thee onto Netflix!

    • AnnPopovic

      Even better in MI-5 I think…

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

Actually, the tie’s the only piece that clashes. And yes, he should’ve buttoned his jacket, but give me a piece of Armitage every day of the week.

  • Jecca2244

never thought i’d utter this but..he’s WAY hotter as a dwarf (I think that is what they are called in the movie. not trying to be un PC). It is like he doesn’t have the same face.

    • alinana

      I so totally agree…as a dwarf…*drool*

  • ‘Becca’lise Deveaux

Off. I want all of that off. Rawr.

  • Something is off about the proportions, but he still makes me drool.

  • Jacob Bowen

Is he a teenager borrowing his dad’s jacket? Why does it seem so long??? And why is it open so wide? He is darn cute though.

  • Nazzzy

    That is one fine elf.

  • quiltrx

Maybe he’s just really long-waisted, but the pants look kind of low-rise to me and that’s just a little odd. I love that they’re plaid, though!

  • MannahattaMamma

wow. that’s a hobbit I could hop on.

  • AvaLehra

“Not every man can pull them off…”

I would certainly like to try!

  • Lily-Rygh

    FLOVE these pants!

  • perry322

His stylist is Ilaria Urbinati. The pants had a a turquoise ( I think it’steal) line in the plaid, and the tie was same color.

  • demidaemon

    MMMMMM…Yes, yes, yes! I LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!
