Naomie Harris in Monique Lhuillier at the Oxfam Charity Gala

Posted on December 12, 2013

Sublime is a word we should use more often.

Naomie Harris attends the Oxfam Charity Gala during the 2013 Dubai International Film Festival in a Monique Lhuillier gown paired with a Rauwolf clutch and David Morris jewelry.

Like now, for instance.

Although to be fair, we find the pink lace to be pretty distracting. But the shape and the flow and the color are all gorgeous on her and she’s serving up some world-class FACE to boot. Weird lace or not, that’s a gasp-worthy look.

    Barbie. Full on.

    • YoungSally

Barbie in a dance school recital costume. But a nice one.

    • demidaemon

Yes. I am certainly not feeling this one, and I think you succinctly stated why.

  • PlethoraofBooks

World class face and presence! Just not makeup IMO.

  • barbarienne

The lace is making my eyes confused, but in a good way. Like a Magritte painting, or an Escher print.

    • Jecca2244

      i SO love Magritte.

  • MilaXX

I think this is an instance where the dress works better on a darker skin tone. Lovely.

    • PastryGoddess

Indeed. It would look washed out on someone with a paler skin tone

      • Melanie

totally agreeing with both of you. there are some colors that require a richly colored backdrop to really pop.

  • Mismarker

As always, she gets points when I can’t see her sternum.

  • Milos Mom

This is undoubtedly the best look for her recently . The perfect shade, coverage, cute…. DIVINE! And you can see that she knows it and fells it. Good for her!

  • boweryboy

I like her make-up, but I’m not loving the dress. I think it’s the color for me that throws it off. That, and the lace. Lately lace has become so cliched.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I love how it moves. Pretty, feminine, and elegant.

    • filmcricket

Yes, it’s fine when standing still, but it becomes almost poetic in motion.

  • Love the serene face and the pop of color in her eye makeup (and that’s not always something that works). I’m curious about the footwear, though.

    • marlie

Me too… is that a gold peep toe pump? I could get behind that.

  • hughman

The dress is a little bridesmaid-y for my taste but the eye makeup is freaking me out. Fun Fact : if you move around the room, her picture’s eyes will follow you everywhere!

    • Sarah

Yeah, that under-eye blueness is the second time today, The Extraneous Elf had it too. I don’t like it. It’s like Easter punched you in the eye.

      • filmcricket

Even though I think it’s working for her – especially at a distance – you get a like for “Extraneous Elf” and “Easter punch.”

      • I thought, “Hey, this is what the Extraneous Elf’s people were going for”!

      • formerlyAnon

I think this eye is working for her, here, but it is going to be a big clown-ish fail on the thousands who will be trying it at home. Middle school girls, I’m looking right at you.

    • Lilah

She needs to back away from the eye shadow and blusher.

    • Darcy H

I was just about to come down and say that her eye makeup was kind of ruining this, but you beat me to it. Seriously though what is UP with it?!

    • annachronizm

how in the world did you come upon this discovery??

  • SugarSnap108

I have a solid record of opposing pink lace and bright blue eyeshadow … but she’s just so damn beautiful, I can’t hate.

    • Constant Reader

Me too! I also have a solid record of disliking multiple shades of pink in one garment, and yet, I am loving this on her. She’s a gorgeous sorceress, that’s what she is!

  • Pennymac

Pepto Bismol is not my favorite shade of pink, but that’s an elegant look.

  • kimmeister

I think the lace would look less weird if it were the same color as the rest of the dress, rather than several shades lighter. The darker salmon color is popping on her.

    • lifeisastory

I agree. I liked this at first, but now, the more I look at it, the more the mismatched colors bother me. I gave it a thumbs-up at first, thinking the camera flash is to blame for the contrast between the two fabrics, but no. That was done on purpose, and I don’t like it.

  • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

is it weird that i gay gasped at this picture, because i am not gay… but i gay gasped…. i gay gasped at pink lace. lord is there a support group?

  • Imasewsure

Don’t love the color and she has to stay in motion for the gasping to continue but it is beautiful on her

  • LaSylphide

Not crazy about the color of either the dress or the eye shadow, but lordy, she sure is making it work. Gorgeous.

  • Nika E

    I love her eye makeup.

  • I am liking the lace just fine, but the pink on her cheeks is too harshly colored and shaped.

  • pookiesmom

  • The dress is perfection on her, but I despise the eye makeup. So distracting — throws the whole look off kilter.

  • luludexter

that is a hella pretty dress

  • Kate4queen

    I love that color. 🙂

  • marlie

I’m not a fan of the eye makeup, but otherwise, this look is positively breathtaking. I loved that dress on the runway the first time I saw it, but Naomie is bringing it to life!

  • Jacob Bowen

I LOVE her makeup and I can KIND OF get on board with this dress. It’s pretty and the lace is interesting, but I am not thrilled.

  • housefulofboys

That color is freakin’ fantastic, makes me want to take a bite it’s so fresh and pungent. My only quibble is the blue eye makeup, isn’t this the 2nd time we’ve seen it just today? Please don’t let this be a trend. I lived through the 70’s and have no desire to revisit them,

  • jw_ny

Gown looks like it moves beautifully, but I can’t get past the blue under-eye shadow, and the excessive matchy blush to dress color.

  • quiltrx

That dress moves SO well that it draws the eye straight away from bizarro-lace.

  • ThesisMonkey

Is BTTM (“better than the model”) a thing? Because it should be a thing.

  • lifeisastory

Love that shade of pink, but the top looks itchy as hell.

  • There’s too much stuff trimming her torso. But I love the color.

  • nannypoo

This is the only time ever that lace hasn’t bothered me. It’s pretty and she looks beautiful.

  • 3boysful

This color is phenomenal on her. The dress works for me (altho I want to dislike it as it reminds me of a peach lace bridesmaid’s dress I had to wear) because of the color contrast with her skin, and mostly the fact that it’s a well-edited design. Busy shoulder area is relatively small, into slightly busy bodice, into plain-ish skirt, which is the bulk of the dress. I like.

  • E2_Remote

I’ll bet that color is stunning in person. In the photos here, it’s a bit washed out. I still love it, but my only minor quibble is the lace pattern on her chest, it looks a bit veiny from a distance. Also wish she’d gone with a bold lip like on the model, but makeup is good overall.

  • E. D.

I like it, except for the eye makeup. I’m not sure why the blue/grey bothers me, but it does.

  • Diego!

Kira, Barbie’s friend! She looks amazing!

  • carnush

She looks better than the model. Just beautiful!

  • PeggyOC

Lovely, but I would so have torn the lace out and worn it without. The lace just cheapens the whole thing.

  • Nancer

    Oohhh….. Honestly, I gasped. Beautiful.

  • ballerinawithagun

The lace definitely needs to be a darker shade of pink and perhaps a heavier lace.
I’ve worn gray eye shadow before that has photographed blue, perhaps that is what happened here.

  • formerlyAnon

I’d have preferred sheer to lace. But she is lovely and the way the skirt seems to move is utterly lovely, so she pulls the girly pink off, too-muchiness of the lace notwithstanding. Lip color works.

A bunch of people are going to try to make the blue/green surrounding the whole eye makeup work and it is going to fail in a mermaid clown kind of way.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I’m not totally thrilled with the lace and the color of the gown, but she looks gorgeous, and that skirt is simply floating around her.

  • Corsetmaker

Gorgeous colour, gorgeous lace. I wonder what it is about some fabrics that inevitably leads people to describe them all as cheap; Lace is only of the most expensive fabrics there is, so there are cheap versions made, which lots of people seem to then associate the whole lot with. Nylon and poly have a lot to answer for!
I don’t think her eye make up is blue. I think it’s grey or smokey black and the flash is changing it, look at her hair too. It’s reflecting a blue tinge.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Lovely. Winsome. Radiant as in some dream come true.

  • Chickadeep

Really strikingly pretty. The color is perfection on her.

  • dschubba

Makeup’s not great, but the gown makes up for it. Thankfully, she seems to have avoided the nipple issue the model seems to be having.

  • guest2visits

Really beautiful. I may wish the lace was swiss dot or something other than this lace, but she looks amazing all the same.

  • She is STUNNING.

  • RuthGo

I feel like the lace is emphasizing the shortness of her neck. Without the lace would have been much, much better. That color is a stunner on her.

  • amaranth16

    Gown is exquisite.
