Mindy Kaling in Los Angeles

Posted on December 10, 2013

Here’s a little coat porn for the ladies, since all the entries lately have been boy-oriented.

Mindy Kaling seen leaving the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles.

Is that a super-cute coat or what? This whole look is working for us. Whether she actually is or not, she looks like a gal heading to a party and ready for a fun night. Love it.

That skirt is kinda crazy-short, though.

Her she wears the best coats on her show.

    • Sobaika

Her outfits are so fun on the show! Especially the coats. She doesn’t dress terribly different offscreen, but somehow TV magic makes her look less kooky and more whimsical.

I think the coat is cute and like the idea of her going out in formal shorts (they’d better be shorts) but not the outfit and coat together.

  • imspinningaround

Is it a skirt? I thought it was tap pants/formal shorts. And are we sure she’s going to a party? That’s “I’ve been slamming back French 75s all night” face.

I like the lady in the ruana in the background.

    • formerlyAnon

Ditto on the woman in the background.

    • Constant Reader

I want to hang out with the lady in the background. She looks like a hoot.

    • jonnyf8

Fine, I think the guy with the glasses is pretty cute too.

      • boweryboy

        Ditto.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I just learned a new word, had no idea what a “ruana” was. She looks like my kind of gal! Mindy, on the other hand, looks like this is her 5th party of the evening. The coat does absolutely nothing for me, and it’s what my mother used to call “a useless ass-freezer”.

      • jen_vasm

How awesome to have a mom who can describe something as “a useless ass-freezer”.

        • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Yep! I must agree. She’s still as divine now as ever. Thank you, Jen!

      • littlemac8

I worked in Evanston, IL in the 1970-s in a mini camel coat. I had to walk from the EL to the campus and I LOVE the idea of my old coat as “a useless ass-freezer because that’s exactly what it was.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Ooh I love that lady in the background! She looks like FUN. She’s my pretend drinking buddy for tonight. We’re gonna talk *trash* about everyone.

  • Akemi

    Love it! Love her.

  • charlotte

Is the coat supposed to be open like that? And is it for some reason shorts-and-coat-weather in LA? I do like the pattern, but I am wondering…

    • Slanted & Enchanted

In this LA native’s opinion, no, it is not shorts-and-coat-weather here. It is dear-god-I-thought-for-sure-I-had-a-pair-of-mittens-somewhere-why-am-I-so-coooooold???-weather.

      • Bridget Smith

Heh, but Mindy’s a Boston native, so she is probably fine!

      • http://www.GiftedCollector.com/ The Gifted Collector

I actually wore mittens to the market on Monday! It was 60 degrees out and I was cold! At least I can say some part of me is thin, even if it’s just my blood.

  • marlie

I’m going to have to disagree with the uncles on this one. I hate the coat – the pattern and the double-breasted part. And I hate her lipstick color. And sweetie, that skirt is WAY too short.

Also, the seasonality thing doesn’t usually bother me, but she’s wearing a winter coat *in LA* with a micro mini? Doesn’t compute.

    • charlotte

      Haha, great minds…!

    • MilaXX

I rarely like her lipstick choices.

    • Carleenml

and the nails and the clutch. the whole thing is a hot mess.

      • marlie

Funny thing is, I initially was going to say the clutch, too but it seems to “go” with the outfit under the coat. So if we ditched the coat (because it’s fugly), and put her in a different one (or none at all, depending on the weather in LA), the clutch wouldn’t bother me as much.

    • Zaftiguana

Probably just because she was hanging out inside where it was perfectly warm and just needed to get to and from the car on a chilly but not Siberian Tundra-esque evening.

      • marlie

Probably 95% of the time, these ladystars are walking out the door and into a waiting limo, so it’s not like they’re waiting for the bus. I get that. But I’ve never been able to embrace the idea of formal shorts, or winter shorts. So they just look a little off to me. But that’s just me. :)

        • kimmeister

I can embrace formal shorts much more than winter shorts, because the latter are more oxymoronic to me.

      • boweryboy

As a Cali native who no longer resides there, I get what you’re saying. However, my mother would say, “If it’s cold enough to wear a coat then it’s cold enough to cover up the rest of your body.”

        • Zaftiguana

But Mindy might point out to your mom that her little leopard clutch isn’t big enough for a spare pair of door-to-limo pants ;).

          • boweryboy

: ) I can hear my mom now saying, “Young lady, don’t sass me. If you want to catch pneumonia, fine. Just don’t come crying to me when you do.”

    • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

Here in CA, it’s common to see people wearing a scarf and tank top.

      • marlie

Yeah, I do that all the time in the summer, myself, unless it’s positively sweltering (something light and cottony, of course). That doesn’t bother me. It also doesn’t bother me when ladystars wear “naked” shoes in the winter, though it bugs a lot of the other bitter kittens. I never said that my fervent dislike of shorts in winter was rational. :P

        • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

I should have mentioned earlier that I love the scarf + tank top look and sometimes do it too when it’s not too cold. I think it’s lovely no matter how much others roll their eyes at it. :)

  • Glam Dixie

I’m sorry Uncles, I’m not liking this at all. The coat needs to be a bit longer on her to make the proportions work and so does her skirt.

    • Carleenml

agreed. I’m a coat whore and this one….meh.

      • marlie

I find this coat to be aggressively ugly. maybe it’s the color combo, but it seems really dated to me.

        • filmcricket

I quite like it for both those reasons, but the rest of the look needs to either go completely boho – which isn’t really her style – or be emphatically chic. Like, sleek hair, pin-straight black pants chic.

          • marlie

At least you know you won’t have to fight me for the coat. ;)

          • formerlyAnon

            Nailed it.

        • Glam Dixie

I completely agree, it looks terrible on her and I can’t think of a single person it would look good on. Just an ugly coat.

        • Pannyx

I think it is everything. I can’t stand this coat.

  • zoë

who makes this coat? i demand to know.

  • maddy

Pretty sure those have to be shorts. At least I really, really hope they’re shorts.

  • kalisa

Is it a skirt? Or shorts? I thought it was shorts.

  • MilaXX

Cute coat, but the legs look a little ashy and I’m sorry, if you need a coat, you need tights or at the very least pantyhose.

    • marlie

I think the ashiness could be camera flash + shimmer.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I think you are right. Body shimmer in December bothers me more than bare legs.

      • MilaXX

        You’re probably right.

      • BrooklynBomber

I think her legs look pretty gorgeous, but I agree with MXX that if it’s cold enough for a coat it’s too cold for bare legs.

  • hughman

Not loving. This coat needs a top hat and a candy factory.

    • MilaXX

      Wonka?

      • hughman

At least. It says Tim Burton all over it.

  • filmcricket

I want a girl with a short skirt, and a loooooooong jacket.

Doesn’t quite work since the coat’s also short, but it was the first thing that came to mind.

    • Carleenml

      yes!

    • formerlyAnon

      Short coat = Long jacket.

      Yes?

    • kimmeister

      Oh, but that’s not a white Chrysler LeBaron that she’s exiting . . .

    • sojourneryouth

Excellent deployment of Cake lyrics :)

  • sugarkane105

    Hot mess alert.

  • mmebam

I think they’re shorts. And I’m all about it, her legs are great.

Unfortunately, I can’t get behind this coat completely. I like the length and I like the shape, but the color and pattern remind me of some matronly principal’s blazer.

  • mjude

I like the idea of the coat but way to short for me, looks more like a jacket.

  • Verascity

I LOVE the pattern, but it’s too tight and too short.

  • Zaftiguana

She looks adorable and like she just tied one on out on the town. Love the whole thing.

I do think they’re shorts, and as a California native, I get the choice to throw a cute coat over a warm-weather outfit to get to and from your car in the late autumn. Just because she was photographed outside doesn’t mean that’s the sort of weather she dressed to hang out in.

  • xmixiex

That face is definitely LEAVING the party

  • muelonil

Love the coat and that she looks genuinely happy. Hate everything else.

  • Jacob Bowen

Is you can wear shorts, is it REALLY necessary to wear a coat? And WHY the clutch!?!?!

  • boweryboy

    Scroll down WTF.

  • Constant Reader

See, now once again, I am thinking “young lady, if your skirt is shorter than your car coat, it’s too damn short.” These young starlets are making me channel my mother and I deeply resent it. (Although I love my mother dearly. But she is 72.)

    • Monabel

Does being 72 mean she is wrong?

      • Constant Reader

        LOL! Good point. No.

  • pookiesmom

    WANT.

  • Trickytrisha

Coat’s cute, but the rest? Nuh uh.

  • alyce1213

I really don’t like that coat at all, it’s pretty horrible IMO. And the shorts make the outfit worse.

  • BrooklynBomber

Oh, I dunno. She’s young and looks happy, but the pattern and color combo make it a bit kitschy.

  • kimmeister

The pattern is very court jester-ish. Fun!

  • Judy_S

I’m not sure I actually like the coat itself, but I like it on her.

  • kim bunchalastnames

the coat is adorable, as is its wearer. and the expressions on the people behind her? PERFECT. lol.

  • crash1212

Coat is perfect. Those HAVE to be shorts! That cannot be a skirt…my mind won’t let it be.

  • Jaeda Laurez

i think those are shorts. But I’m not mad- we can’t see the top and we’re focusing on the coat right now. Plus she has nice legs and they’re not ashy. Win.

  • Danielle

I’m imagining she’s on her way to my house for appletinis and Harry Potter weekend.

  • murt

Great look except for the makeup – she really needs to hire a new makeup artist.

  • Monabel

That fabric deserved a lot better.

  • Reality TV Casting

i bet 5 dollars she’s wearing shorts (not a skirt) which makes it totes appropriate no taco shots for these paps

  • Sweetvegan

Very cute! I think those are shorts underneath. And I wish we could see the satin (?) top underneath the coat!

  • heuristicvalue

I am one of the very few who likes the super-short skirt/shorts on her. I think she looks hot.

  • pdquick

I loved it until I got to the shorts. An above-the-knee mini would have been better.

  • elemspbee

Oh, this is OR NOT. ickx.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

This jacket is cute but I would like it better if the colors were more muted and not as high contrast.

  • Erica_Vuitton

I’m just glad the pixie cut was fake. It did her no favors. I’m not sure about the coat honestly… too much bulk added around the mid section with the faux-double breast.
