Michelle Obama in Marchesa at the 2013 Kennedy Center Honors Gala

Posted on December 09, 2013

You go and get it, FLO.

First Lady Michelle Obama attends the 2013 Kennedy Center Honors Gala in Washington, D.C. wearing a Marchesa gown.

We could do without the straps hanging off the bust, but the color and shape are absolutely stunning on her. Love the jewelry and the tiny minaudiere. LIVING for the “Charlie’s Angels” hair.

I had the incredible good fortune to meet her this summer and let me tell you, she is even more gorgeous in person than she looks in photos. I haven’t seen a single picture of her that captures her incredible glow. Every woman at the event was buzzing about it.

    • conniemd

My daughter took the year off in 2007-08 to work for Obama’s campaign between college and law school. As much as she enjoyed working for the campaign, the real highlights she had were events with the First Lady. She came away totally in awe of her and starstruck by the few times she interacted with her. Some great pics of her with Michelle too. She is totally a role model for females of all ages.

  • Gorgeous!

  • Nicole C

Genuine happiness = beauty. Love her!

  • beebee10

    Great FLOTUS!
And I was saddened to read in that interview with you all, how much you have to police postings about Michelle and how many bloggers don’t even bother because of all the work required to keep removing all the disturbing things people write about her. Thank you and Keep it up!

    • Constant Reader

      I agree!

      • majorbedhead

        What interview was this?

I don’t even want to think about what people say about her. I hear enough of what they say about Obama.

        • It’s linked in TLo’s last post on Friday.

        • Sunraya

Never underestimate the racism of your fellow Americans. And with right wing radio and TV telling us it’s OK to be a hater, the sheets (white ones) have come off.

  • Sobaika

She is simply radiant. Not loving her necklace, although this dress certainly requires one.

  • Constant Reader

    LOVING her hair like this!

  • E. D.

    She looks great!

  • BawlmerGurl

Yay for Shelly-O! She looks plenty radiant even from way out here in TLo land.

Luv her. And her man is also easy on the on the eyes.

  • kbshee

The top of the dress reminds me just a tiny bit of the Curtain dress in Gone with the Wind (or maybe the Carol Burnett version) but she looks amazing! So beautiful and stylish!

    • kbshee

And the necklace is so pretty too!.

  • ErmengardeGreen

The redesign looks beautiful! Clean and expansive and it makes good use of your great images. And, per your remarks on Michelle Obama posts in the interview you linked to, thank you for policing comments on those and all posts, keeping this corner of the Internet a place that’s nice to visit.

Also, MObama looks fabulous. Love that unexpected big romantic skirt.

    • rosanegra

Where can I find that link?

  • unbornfawn

The bitter kittens ask and we receive! Best gay uncles ever. Flo looks fabulous!

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Love the color. It would look lovelier without the drapey straps.

    • MK03

It wouldn’t be a Marchesa without one weird element that doesn’t really work.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

That is a good point about Marchesa-they can’t seem to stop themselves from adding that one element that shouldn’t be there.

    • fursa_saida

Honestly, something about the combo of drapey straps and that particular necklace makes me think “disney princess” and somehow that wins me over. (Is it Belle’s yellow dress I’m thinking of? I’m not sure.) I agree that objectively they’re kind of unflattering (they do weird things to her chest), but I can’t help it. I like ’em anyway.

  • lrhoff

Wow, that hair is rather frightening. Please don’t let her stick her fingers in electrical sockets again…..

  • MarinaCat

That thumbnail is just frightening. Maybe just a bad photo.

  • MarshaMarz

I don’t care what your politics are – but she is a stunning woman — That color on her is fabulous

As a fellow 6 foot tall lady, Mobama’s choice if waistline placement has been driving me nuts for several years now. Thats not her waist, that’s her ribcage. A bodice 2 inches longer would be perfection, and actually land at her waist. Fer chrissake, she is the first lady….. surely designers would make a properly fitting custom gown for her, not something off the (very high end) rack.

    • marlie

YES. I’m not quite as tall as she is, but I have a long torso, and things like that fit just below my ribcage, and it’s terribly uncomfortable (IMO).

    • ampg

My understanding is that she’s actually pretty short-waisted, despite her height, which is one of the reasons things often seem to fit her oddly. I think this dress does a better job than most, actually.

  • ThesisMonkey

    American royalty

  • Christine Hart

I actually think the straps are great for a holiday dress, maybe not the other 11 months of the year. I agree the necklace was a little too dainty for the dress, but otherwise, a great look for our First Lady.

  • manina

I think MIchelle Obama is the only FLOTUS since Jackie that can rock a gown, most of the previous ones looked dowdy, not her! I love how happy they look together, beaming!

  • quiltrx

That necklace is SO pretty! Of course the rest of her looks fabulous too…but that necklace really caught my eye. I like that it’s sparkly but not ostentatious, just right.

    • marlie

It caught my eye too. It’s so delicate and pretty.

  • DeTrop

Just lovely. They seem so suited for each other.

  • Therese Bohn

Love it! The Color, the Necklace, even the floppy straps, love it all. Go Go FLO-(TUS)

  • Those straps need to be made into real off- or over-the-shoulder straps, or they need to be removed. Very odd. The color is spectacular and I do love the complicated ruching in the bodice. Her hair is…..different? I have to see it more before I can say if I like it or dislike it, but I do know that it is every woman’s absolute God-given RIGHT to mess with her hair every which way, knowing that there will be winning looks and epic failures. She seems happy with how she looks, and I don’t see her escort looking upset about it! They bring such class to the White House.

  • Gatto Nero

This is honestly the only tasteful, elegant Marchesa gown I’ve seen. (Most of them are overwrought messes of bunched fabric and bling.) The color is gorgeous on her. Would prefer if the straps were just off-the-shoulder and not draped over her upper arms that way. Not convinced about the hair, but I love that she’s not afraid to mix things up. And she is (they are) beaming.
    They are stunning together.

  • Not a big fan of the hair but I really like the dress

  • Sunraya

    Gorgeous! Stunning! Way to go!

  • marlie

Get rid of the wing thingys, and this would be a WERQ. I LOVE that color on Shelly O!

  • tereliz

Great dress and minaudiere, but that RING! I can live with the straps with that hair. I think they kind of complement each other. The softer side of Shelly O. But the ring shows she still has some edge.

  • MaggieMae

Shouted out Farrah Fawcett hair when I saw the thumbnail! Not crazy about the floppy straps, but I’m beaming seeing her. Something about Shelly O just brightens my day! Would love to see some Shelly O coat porn.

  • d4divine

Typical Marchesa dress though, always one or two steps too far…wait…or three

  • Akemi

    God, she is stunning.

  • Tracy_Flick

I love her, and want to love everything she wears. But this is so unflattering in the bust. And to be perfectly honest, I find the color a little “late 80s to be paired with dusty rose.” I had a jacket in that color in high school.

  • Love the color, the jewelry and the drape of the skirt. Not convinced on the Farrah hair, but that’s probably just the awful high school flashbacks.

  • melanie0866

“minaudiere” – my word of the day

  • traceyishere

What could she be carrying in that little bag? Isn’t that was the Secret Service is for?

  • murt

    Gorgeous look.

  • Sweetvegan

  • e jerry powell

    Works well on TV, too.
