Kim Basinger in Ralph Lauren Collection at the “Grudge Match” New York Screening

Posted on December 17, 2013

This seems to be the day for ladystars to attempt some version of menswear. Julia Roberts went for a bad menswear-turned-into-a-dress horror-show hybrid, but here’s Kim, coming out of left field doing full-on drag:

Kim Basinger attends the worlds premiere of “Grudge Match” held at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York City in Ralph Lauren Collection.

All she needs is an eyebrow-pencil mustache.

We don’t know… we’re not inclined to love such a literal take. Points for being very well executed, though. And also for choosing something off the beaten red carpet path and then running with it, unlike Julia, who limped down the red carpet when she tried it.  But the hair and makeup are way too severe and we’re finding that watch chain to be an irritating affectation. In fact, the longer we look at it, the more we realize we love the suit and shirt, but hate the tie, chain, hair and makeup.

    I kinda love it.

    • PeggyOC

Agreed. She’s always been so reliant on glam and wowza that it’s really cool to see her just shut all that down.

    • Jackie4g

I definitely love it. That suit fits perfectly. I don’t mind the severity of the hair because she has a beautiful face. The whole presentation is beautifully done.

      • SugarSnap108

I agree. My only quibble is that I’d like stronger eyes. And a little less lip — and she’d probably say the same to me, followed by a bitch-slap.

        • Lower L

Definitely stronger eyes. And perhaps a slightly different shade of lipstick… a deep cranberry instead of bright cherry red?

        • sojourneryouth

Yep, a stronger eye would make this deliciously 80’s Annie Lennox. Something is off about her foundation, though. She is either to shiny or too pearlescent, not sure which.

          • demidaemon

Exactly my thoughts and why I love it.

          • judybrowni

My first thought, “Wait, David Bowie is wearing lipstick again?”

    • Kent Roby

I love it, too. I’d probably love it a tad bit more if she wore it without the shirt and tie, but she is certainly giving all the men tips on how a suit should fit.

      • Ginny Ellsworth

How about no shirt but keep the tie? And she reminds me of Julie Andrews near the beginning of “Victor, Victoria”.

        • 3boysful

I was thinking, Well, we’ve now redone SOM. Are they doing Victor,Victoria as well? And Kim wants the role?

  • 8daysaweek

If she had gone for softer hair and make-up to balance out the very literal menswear, I’d love it.

    • Jessica Freeman

      • 8daysaweek

Buy me a (Jack and) Coke?

    • formerlyAnon

What I said, shoulda read first; you say it more succinctly.

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

  • Jessica Freeman

I would have loved this if she hadn’t done that to her hair.

  • annabelle archer

Um, no. Kim Basinger, Gangster Bank Robber does not compute.

  • gabbilevy

Oh Kim, even us mortals know the trick to a girl pulling off menswear is to go full Lady on the face and hair.

    • jilly_d

should have read yours before posting nearly the exact same thing, lol. How does she not know this?

    • StellaZafella

Marlene did it first…and in tails and a top hat….but you’re right, Marlene kept her face on.

  • Diego!

Had she had loose hair and softer make up. this would have been a WERQ. That suit is perfectly fitted! (Boys, I’m talking to you!)

    • CelandineM

YES this! The fit is fantastic. How is it that most boy stars can’t get the fit right?

      • Diego!

I think that’s because they hired the wrong gays 😛

  • jspark

She had to cover up to machinery that’s keeping her face sucked back.

    • Spreecord

Yeah. Whatever she’s doing to her face, she needs to just… stop. She’s gone past Kidman and straight into Uncanny Valley territory.

      • Constant Reader

Let this be a lesson to us all, children. When you pass Kidman, hit the brakes.

    • I’m sad to see what has become of her face. She was in my store about seven or eight years ago and she was gorgeous. Flawless, really. Why can’t these beautiful people leave themselves alone? (I’m looking at you, Marlo Thomas, Mary Tyler Moore and Priscilla Presley.)

  • amanda siegelson

she needed a much stronger eye… and yes, the hair is a let down. but i love the way this looks otherwise. good for her!

  • Bexxx

I actually love the full drag. It’s brave, and different, and I kind of love the 1920’s gangster look. And it reads a little Bowie somehow.

    • LondonMarriott

      Agreed! I am bowing down

    • CakesOnAPlane

Yes! Should have read your comment before I posted!

    • Danielle

She looks like she is going to tie me to the train tracks.

Not that I’d particularly mind Kim Basinger tying me down, but that’s another post.

      • demidaemon

        Don’t hold back now!

  • NBG

Oh come ON! Is this the best that stylists can come up with? And stars play them for this tired crap?

  • Between Juliette Lewis and Kim Basinger’s return to the red carpet, I feel like it’s the early 90’s again. Who is going to design their own Oscar dress this year?

    • tereliz

Who do I have to pay to ensure Ju-Lew designs her own dress for the Oscars this year? Would it be made of bedskirts and lampshades? Or cotton balls and tin-foil? Oh man, the options are wide open!

  • RoxieRider

I love it. I love that she totally went for it. Total Annie Lennox fab. And my god, the fit! Like a damn glove!

    • JenniferA

I was just coming here to say she is serving up Annie Lennox realness!

    • another_laura

      Should have scrolled further. This!

    • ballerinawithagun

No, simply because Annie did fabulous make up when she did men’s wear. The ensemble is great though.

    • merciblahblah

Thought exactly the same thing, plus I love it because it SO reminds me of what her character wore in Nine 1/2 Weeks (back when Mickey Rourke was HAAAAWT). If she would have done hair and makeup like that, this would have been perfection. I mean, minus the fake moustache. But you know – that messily slicked back hair and smokey eyes. Gawd I LOVED them BOTH in that movie, and still love the style of her wardrobe whenever I go back and watch it again.

    • sojourneryouth

Should have scrolled down before I commented 🙂 Here comes the rain again.

  • algaechick

A wider leg and some heels to cut down on the men’s suit literalness. I’m going back and forth about the chain. Definitely needed different hair and makeup, but all in all, it made me smile, and not in schadenfreudish way.

  • TrixieConQueso

“Oh Hai Alec Baldwin. Not only am I a better parent, I am a better Sharp Dressed Man.”

    • PastryGoddess

And now I have ZZ Top going through my head. I guess it’s better than Xmas music

      • Sarah

ZZ Top is highly underrated for being better than a lot of things.

        • PastryGoddess

Indeed. The little boogie band from Texas has some seriously good music

          • Sarah

Hell yes. I forgive them their 80’s trespasses because I have seen them live and collected their larger discography since my childhood. Hence, I am obviously not referring to classics like “Tube Snake Boogie” and “Cheap Sunglasses.”

          • MoHub

They need to do a guest shot on Duck Dynasty.

        • sojourneryouth

They have been on Sesame Street several times, which proves their awesomeness.

          • Sarah

They proved it to me when I was 7 and heard Deguello on my brother’s wrecka player the first time. But yes, it is for sure a good sign that they can chill with the Muppets.

        • formerlyAnon

ZZ Top is just All the Guitar washing over me in waves. They’re a band that transcends genre.

          • Sarah

Indeed. (But Texas Blues Rock is not a bad genre to start with). I am about to marry a doppelganger for Dusty Hill, and it’s about 80% their influence, coupled with a youthful hard-on for Grizzly Adams that I have to thank.

  • schadenfreudelicious

Did the lady stars all watch Victor/Victoria over the weekend?

    • ballerinawithagun

Love that movie! Of course they had better make up with the suits.

    • teensmom99

Just saw this after my post . . .

    • Constant Reader

I scrolled through to see if anyone else thought the same thing: Victor/Victoria realness.

  • jilly_d

I feel like this could have worked with a more feminine ‘do (perhaps some waves or something), a less clunky shoe, and a smokey eye. If you’re going to literally wear a men’s suit, ya gotta sex it up a little on the details.

  • MilaXX

She needed to wear her hair out, this is much too severe. A little less contouring on her cheeks would have been a wise decision as well. Kim is gorgeous, but for women with naturally high cheek bones, highlighting and contouring them will often give them a case of bitchface.

  • Catiline

I can forgive everything because she looks like a frickin badass!

  • Cheryl

Sorry, but I love it, the whole dang thing, and I’m glad she didn’t take half way measures. Good on ya, Kim.

    • Tracy_Flick

I love it too. She’s owning that shit.

  • Blair Sylvester

I think she needed to ditch the vest, tie, and watch chain and unbutton her shirt a few buttons I also think earings and a necklace and softer hair and makeup would have been a good call

  • I could have done without the Gordon Gecko hair.

  • CakesOnAPlane

    David Bowie? Is that you???

  • PastryGoddess

She needed Marlene Dietrich hair, the makeup gun set to STUN, and killer heels. It’s the juxtaposition between extremely feminine styling and the classic lines of menswear that makes a look like this sing. See: Janelle Monae

…I just realized I told a 6ft tall white glamazon to take styling advice from a 5ft nothing black soul singer

    • MoHub

Well, no woman did menswear better than Marlena Dietrich. She started it all and owned it like nobody else.

    • ballerinawithagun

Glad I scrolled down before posting. Marlene is exactly the way to go! That hair and make up would have looked so glamorous on Kim.
Now I’m going to have to look it up but Kim is actually on the short side, no where near 6′ tall; not tiny like Janelle but taller than Prince (most people are) when she was dating him.

      • PastryGoddess

That’s interesting. I always thought she was super tall. In her heyday, she carried herself like she was

    • Janelle Monae is a good person to take styling advice from (she told my friend that she liked her shoes, once, so I am favourably disposed).

    • formerlyAnon

A whole lotta people could take styling advice from Ms. Monae, and a lotta them have/will do so, and most of those won’t be able to pull it off like Ms. Basinger could.

[Personally, I’d love to see a style-off video between old school Prince and Ms. Monae: Battle of the Five-Foot-ish-Juggernauts.]

  • Sarah

She looks too severe in the head for my tastes, but what she doesn’t look is awkward. She usually looks like she hates to be posing for paps, so if this outfit gave her confidence, then good for her. (Even though it looks like she needs a tommy gun to complete the look)

  • I don’t think the overall severity of the look is very kind to her. I’m especially hating the center part, slicked-back hair.

  • KT

I love it! I agree that the makeup is off, but I honestly love the rest of it. BAM mother fuckers.

  • Clueless_Jock

    Is she wearing heels?

    • kimmeister

It’s too hard to tell! I just hope they’re not wingtips.

  • alyce1213

I love the total commitment. Small quibble that her makeup is not that flattering in the lights.
The suit is gorgeous and fits perfectly.

  • nannypoo

She’s bringing Nucky Thompson realness to this event and doing a pretty good job, but I wonder why she would want to do that.

  • Call me Bee

Severe is the right word. Scary would be too mean (though she actually does look scary.)

  • tereliz

This needs bigger, more feminine hair to work, but the fit of that suit is just perfect, isn’t it? I also wish everything wasn’t competing shades of blue, and that her shoes had more sparkle. If it was styled more like an outfit and less like a *costume*, I’d be 100% on board.

  • DTLAFamilies

I love the wide stance, it’s absolutely brilliant posing and makes her look like a badass.

  • MoHub

For a second there, I thought it was Joel Grey doing a Cabaret revival.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I don’t know, I kinda hate this look. But, I’ve never been a fan of the menswear look for women, unless maybe you’re Diane Keaton, who would have added some fabulous hat.

  • crash1212

I only wish the mens featured on this site could wear a suit half as well as little Miss Kimmy here. I love this – including the chain. Wish she hadn’t gone SO severe with the hair, but all-in-all….LOVE.

  • kimmeister

Love love love the suit. Remove chain, tie, and shirt, swap in bold glittery necklace. Swap out patent leather shoes and put in a stiletto, maybe in maroon? Also, change the whole head.

  • Maybe Mickey Rourke dressed her… (you’ll snicker if you know the movie 91/2 Weeks).

  • elemspbee

hmmm. i quite appreciate this, however severe it might be. out of character for her, and an enjoyable step out of her boundaries. I’m loving the transition to a harder face.

  • AvaLehra

    9 1/2 Weeks Redux.

  • Julie Chase

I wish she had utilized her Veronica Lake hair from LA Confidential.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

A bit less severe hair could have been just the touch to send this closer to WERQland. As it is, I still like the menswear on her.

  • snarkykitten

    Channeling David Bowie Realness

  • another_laura

You know, I love the whole thing. She’s totally committed to it. Bravo, Androgynous One.

  • bellafigura1

I’m so happy to see her on the red carpet, I’m not even gonna comment on [how tight her hair is].

  • Dagney

The best accessory is her confidence. So, IN.

  • jjtxgrrl

I’m IN too…..kudos for doing something different, and still being sexy. Seems like too often different isn’t sexy….but this is.

    • Imasewsure

I agree. It’s sexy but wish she hadn’t gone so literal…. she needs to study Lauren Hutton or Lauren Bacall… two Lauren’s who knew how to rock the men’s wear sexy (ok and Kate Hepburn and Claudette Colbert but those don’t fit in my little phrase)

  • Sam Smith

I luv the suit, but she has done major damage to her beautiful face and that cannot be forgiven.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

    Too much Botox!

  • Tanya Wade

She’s giving Paper Moon realness, but needs to ask Santa to help settle that face. OY! Rudolph wept.

  • Betsy

Is she trying to be Robert Palmer (I *swear* it was the same color suit in one of those videos!), or one of his “girls” (same color lipstick), or some mash-up of the two???
(And for those of you who are too young to know who Robert Palmer or his “girls” were, go to YouTube and search for “Robert Palmer Simply Irresistible”.)

    • Pennymac

great. Thanks for the ear worm. “She’s so fine, there’s no tellin’ where the money went”……

  • I don’t mind the watch chain, but I’m with you on the hate for the hair and makeup. But regardless, points for owning it.

  • teensmom99

Just no time to change after the Victor/Victoria audition.

  • Kbear

that weird lip color makes her look pale and older than she usually looks.

  • lalahartma

Looking good! And looking better than most men featured here in suits.

  • Trickytrisha

Everything, including the face, is too tight.

The suit looks great on her, but the hairdo and cosmetics make her look kind of like Udo Kier in Paul Morrissey’s Blood for Dracula.

    • quiltrx

LOL that’s it! Normally I would say looking like Udo would be a great thing (love him), but not when you’re Ms. Basinger (or I guess any Ms. for that matter!).

  • e jerry powell

I think it’s very Jimmy Darmody, and I would totally hit that.

  • d4divine

    Werk it Kim!!!

  • boweryboy

  • formerlyAnon

I love the suit on her. Dead solid love, no caveats. I wish she’d done girl hair, or at least soft waviness as the hair sweeps back, and less severe make-up with it, though.

  • Random Compliments

She looks unrecognizable to me. Holy filler.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

She looks like David Bowie. Very very much like David Bowie, with a shiny face.

  • heuristicvalue

This needs pointy-toe heels and it would be fierce as hell.

  • Sabin

All I can see is early 80s David Bowie.

  • Adibug

I’ll take six in grey, black, brown, blue, gunmetal and fuck-me-red

  • PeaceBang

Mad about the suit! The hair and make-up are dreadful.

  • Milos Mom

    This is a definite “WERQ”.

  • lillyvonschtupp

She DOES look like Bowie. Thin white duchess?

  • ShaoLinKitten

I love it all but the makeup.

  • rondele

It is a beautiful suit. At first I did not recognize her as Kim B., so the makeup is definitely not working for me. She needs just a bit for her eyes, IMO. I, too, think her hair is too severe as well.

  • ItAin’tMe

I thought it was Bowie at first glance. The make up and hair are just accentuating how tightly her face has been pulled. The suit and her body in it are sublime though. Would be better without the tie, I think,

  • marlie

I really like the suit, but her hair and makeup are way too severe, and really unflattering.

  • CT14

The suit is fab. Her hair and make up are ruining it.

She should have glammed up her face/hair and it could have been a WERQ, even with the watch chain. As is, is not good.

  • ThaliaMenninger

She’s ready for Alfred Nobbs, the Musical. Or perhaps she’s doing DROOD somewhere in the trouser role.

  • Love it. Love the chain. I cannot help that women in drag turn me on. It’s SO hot.

    • somebody blonde

It’s not just you, she’s doing it for me too.

  • Lisa Hager

I know I’m in the minority here, but I kinda love that she went all the way with the masculine look. I’d definitely flirt with her! (fans self)

  • somebody blonde

I love it. Literal drag is so much more daring than “softening” up the look with more feminine elements. Plus, we don’t get nearly enough truly butch looks from our female stars, in my opinion.

  • jangma

I love it, but I think I’d love it more if she either went full on drag king or added some drama in the eye makeup & hair to balance out the lip.

  • Rick Diehl

Honestly I like the whole look. Sure it’s a bit severe, but it somehow works.

  • Jessica Rose

she took what was a wonderful outfit and turned it into a costume
