Keira Knightley in Chanel at the Serious Fun Children’s Network Gala

Posted on December 05, 2013

Oh, Keira. Even you?

Keira Knightly attends the Serious Fun Children’s Network Gala at the Roundhouse in London in a Chanel couture dress paired with Jimmy Chooo sandals.

We credited you with enough style sense not to fall into the whole naked-show-in-December trend trap. And it looks especially odd when paired with a more traditionally seasonally appropriate dress like this.

Pretty dress, though. Perfectly suited for her. So much so that if someone else was wearing it, we’d say, “That’s a total Keira Knightley dress.”

  • I need Knightley daily.

  • aeb1986

I don’t love the outfit but she always manages to look so elegant

  • Latin Buddy

She looks like a Sugar Plum fairy ballerina…and just had a grape as her big Christmas feast (she’s smiling)

    • halleygee

My thought exactly, just needs a bun and some pointe shoes and voila.

  • Maggie

Isn’t that her wedding dress with sheer sleeves added?

    • sojourneryouth

It is, and I am not loving the addition. They look as tacked-on after the fact as they are. I’m all for finding new ways to use a wedding dress, but this is not the way.

      • tereliz

Agreed. The bodice makes her chest look concave and the netting and sleeves look like an afterthought. Which, I guess, they are.

        • flamingoNW

the bodice seems very unflattering for her body type. Very odd choice, IMO.

Trying to get over my irritation at her fish face poses. I don’t think she can help it with those cheekbones sometimes. Much better when she smiles.

          • siriuslover

But at least you can see her teeth in these pictures. I think it’s far more becoming than the pout smile she used to make.

          • Vtg Fashion Library

She has a very odd body shape anyway. I can’t remember which of her films I noticed it in, but once I did, I realized how many camera angles they use to mask it. Love her, don’t get me wrong, and I’d be happy to have her body, but she’s got a strange shape.

          • tereliz

You should see how they changed her body type on the movie poster for King Arthur. Gave her BEWBS. Just google images kiera king arthur movie poster.

        • Kristin McNamara

I agree. Did she even HAVE a fitting for that netting addition??? There is so much extra around the neckline!!

        • Pennymac

The seams in those sleeves are killing me.

          • formerlyAnon

Right? I realize that a sleeve needs a seam, but lord god. SHE HAS MONEY. That’s what cheap dance/cheer/gymnastic/skating costumes look like.

      • marlie

It looks like it’s something she has on under the dress. Either way, it’s not working for me. Or for her.

        • conniemd

It is under the dress, you can see that the gold detailing continues on under the top of the bodice, because it is cut off here. Looks like some kind of sheer top with a gold breastplate down to the waist as you can see the outline under her bodice.

      • marlie

Also, I think she actually wore this dress before she got married in it. So she reused a dress for her wedding. For that, I like her even more.

        • 3boysful

AND she didn’t buy a $50k dress for the ceremony, another for the reception, etc.

          • marlie

I went to a chi-chi prep school, and for graduation we had to wear white gowns. Imagine how many of those girls parents’ bought them thousand dollar wedding gowns. Some of classmates were a little shocked that I decided to wear my junior prom dress (it was white, and I’d gotten it on clearance for less than $100) just a year later for graduation. At the time, I thought it was silly to have TWO white gowns in my closet, so why not reuse it?

      • MerBearStare

It’s like when Marge keeps altering her Chanel suit.

        • sojourneryouth

          I loved that episode! 🙂

    • gabbilevy

Yes. She’s wearing a sheer embellished top under it last time. The first time was actually in 09 for a pre-BAFTA party with black tights, the second was for her wedding with a jacket. I like that she’s changed up the look significantly each time, giving it a new feel.

    • Evan

The addition of the sheer sleeves makes the top half veer into figure skating outfit. I should know; I used to be a competitive figure skater lol

      • AC Simons

Yes, demure ice skater after ditching the skates and bun. I really hate this look. I do like ice-skaters.

    • murt

haha – I posted the same thing before seeing this.

  • Yolanda13

I read that this was her wedding dress and the third time she’s worn it. It’s lovely.

  • Nikko Viquiera

I have decided to focus on those cheekbones. They’re amazing and could probably peel an orange!

  • Brittany

It’s her wedding dress! It’s great that she loves it so much she wants to rewear it.

    • sagecreek

Actually, no, it’s not. Because she looks like an idiot in it, and if anyone can afford to not rewear their wedding dress, it’s KK.

      • marlie

So she wore this dress (without the sheer neckline and the sleeves) to a BAFTA event and THEN wore it for her wedding. I think it’s kind of cool that she’s getting as much use out of it, but adding that weird sheer thingy to it was NOT the way to freshen up the look.

      • marlie

Also, for a second, I read “KK” in your comment and thought Kim Kardashian, and was like “why is she even bringing that chick up?” Clearly, it’s time for me to go home for the day.

        • sagecreek

We all have those days, amiga 🙂

  • Monzerrat Ontiveros

This is also her wedding dress, she has worn this 3 times 😉

  • jilly_d

Really? I hate this dress with a passion – those ivory seams are making my eyes twitch. I have a mad girl crush on her so I’m usually biased to let her slip-ups go, but I think this looks terrible.

    • myandyleigh

I agree. The dress itself, without the illusion netting sleeves and collar, is okay if somewhat boring (even as a wedding dress) but that illusion netting is ugly, the collar and cuffs are ugly and make the actual wedding dress look dirty. And the netting doesn’t fit, it’s baggy and makes her look like she’s got giant skin wrinkles in her armpits. I think it’s a mess. Beyond that, she’s cold, you can see the goosebumps on her legs. It’s winter so why is she wearing a couple of thin leather straps as shoes?

I see the charm of someone like her wearing her wedding dress repeatedly because she likes it, but it’s been ruined by that baggy illusion netting. Ew.

      • sagecreek

Agreed. It’s a terrible look, and I’m a bit dismayed that people are giving her a pass by saying, “oh, well, it’s her wedding dress.”

        • ConnieBV

The entire effect is shabby and slept in. The hair, the wrinkles, the sandals that look like you do when you start walking on the straps because they are too tight… Not anywhere near what I expected when I read “Kiera Knightly in Chanel”. Hide that fuzzy head in shame, miss.

        • SugarSnap108

I guess it’s nice that she loves her wedding dress so much? I dunno. I do know I disagree with her, though.

        • 3boysful

Well, I think the point would be perhaps she paid for this, ie not a freebie, and she must love it, and we should all be entitled to wear whatever we want to on such a personal day. And if she loves it so much that she chooses to recycle it, even when there might be a more flattering option available, she should get some props for trying. I mean, has ANY celeb ever attempted such a feat?

          • sagecreek

You are a very kind person.

      • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I knew if I just read far enough into the comments, someone would have said what I was thinking. The netting is appallingly ill-fitted and drags the whole look down.

  • Sarah

I don’t like that dress. I really dislike the way that gold detail does not have anything to do with the horizontal band of the bodice. The whole thing is reading Consumptive Tea Party Mummy to me.

  • Eva_baby

Ewww. I dislike this dress. It is a cornucopia of wrong. Those sleeves are only marginally less tragic than her hair.

  • Lauren Dorsee Dillon

I disagree. The dress does nothing for her. Awful color, terrible shape… she looks like a child playing dress up in multiple layers. She’s such a pretty girl but she needs to wear stronger colors and flattering shapes, obviously missing here.

  • mellorcr

Oh, no, Hell no! In this dress she looks like some creepy post apocalyptic survivor hiding in the ruins wearing the wrinkled shreds of an old wedding gown. The proportions are wrong, the wrinkled sleeves are wrong and the skirt looks like it was just hacked off.

  • stellamaris73

I love that it’s her wedding dress. I’ve worn mine a few times, too.

  • tereliz

It looks like it smells like an attic. Preferably one with two sets of twins shut up in it.

    • Sunraya

Or poor Miss Havisham! She and Keira are both wearing old wedding gowns.

    • JDreesen

you, madam, have just revived a fear surging through my bones that i have not experienced since the turn of the 21st century.

for real. when i was about 10 i saw the movie adaptation, after which i stopped allowing my mother to prepare any food meant for my consumption unless i was in the room with her, her hands in clear sight at all times (all times!). and it took me until i was out of college to “face my fears” and force myself to read the book. i did it all in one sitting to get it over with, like eating brussels sprouts. but still.

  • Cee Layton

What a wrinkley mess …Ill-fitting, ill-advised, ill-colored … She looks like she just rolled out of bed and got caught in front of the camera. Should have left the dress alone and accessorized.

  • Honey, no.

    • sagecreek

Damn. I took sixteen words and two letters to say that.

I have much to learn from you, master.

  • MilaXX

Gotta applaud a gal who gets her money’s worth. Hate the shoe though,.

    • decormaven

The shoes are so wrong. And while I get the idea of a muted palette here, some polish on the toes would have been a nice touch.

  • marlie

I don’t like the sheer neckline and sleeves; that part is clearly too big for her. Apparently that was added later on (or it’s under the dress itself). I really don’t mind the naked shoe; I have a a problem with the non-done hair and makeup.

  • lexilexi

What bothers me is her skin/lips… she looks so dry… and I hate the crooked sleeve seams.

  • sara crabtree

I really don’t see how she keeps her feet in those shoes when she takes a step. They were not made for walking…

  • alyce1213

I want to give her props for repurposing her wedding dress by adding sleeves, but this revision is sad and saggy. The color is way off, the sleeves are too long, and it’s sewed badly. It looks like a used duster thingie. And boy, does she need a pedi.

    • sagecreek

Yes. I think “used duster” should join “old bra” in the pantheon of colors.

  • LadyCelia

What is up with the little faces in the lace?

    • kimmeister

      Aaaah! Creepy!

  • Qitkat

I don’t like it. It’s limp and has twisted sleeves and her posture is bad and it looks like it’s been in the bottom of her closet under a pile of laundry.

    • Sarah

And her eyes have the dark circles that I generally have when I’m digging in a laundry pile for clothes, too. She could look one billion times better.

  • sagecreek

Jesus. A, the illusion netting *shudders* and B, that doesn’t even look like her.

  • When did she turn into Olivia Wilde?

  • EEKstl

I don’t know, it’s all looking a bit cray cray to me. Me not likey.

    • It is a bit “The Chronicles of Young Miss Havisham”. (And saying that…I really want that show to happen.)

      • Ginny Ellsworth

I should have read down before I added my 2 cents. Great minds think alike. Then again, so do homicidal
maniacs….which should be the name of my new band.

      • formerlyAnon

God, short stories! Gaimanesque ones – the creepy Gaiman.

  • Cadence Woodland

Apparently that’s her wedding dress. I kind of love that she’s getting more use out of it.

    • sagecreek

What is the fetish for wedding dresses? This look does not work. I don’t care if it’s her wedding dress or her christening gown, it still looks awful.

  • mjude

i’m sorry, what is with the shoes or lack of.

  • ChelseaNH

    I’m not seeing the fun.

  • Gentlemen, but what about those SHOES?!

    • kimmeister

They commented on them: “We credited you with enough style sense not to fall into the whole naked-show-in-December trend trap.” (“Show” is a typo, should be “shoe.”)

  • Lesley

different shoes and this would be perfection

  • She is totally on my love list, but dear god those are some crazy eyes.

  • Lucie Smith

It wouldn’t be bunching as much if she were standing up straight. Better shoes, hair, & posture and I’d love it.

  • Ginny Ellsworth

    Channeling Miss Haversham.

  • frannyprof

If depression were a color and a dress, this would be it.

  • She’s gorgeous and her cheek bones makes me truly envious. But you could cut glass with her jaw. Ms. Swan needs a sandwich.

  • ashtangajunkie

Those shoes are AWFUL, but she’s my very favourite and I can’t hate. Irrational LOVE.

  • Ginny Ellsworth

I don’t get the thought process. It’s freaking cold outside so I’m going to add a transparent t-shirt to my tulle dress to make it warmer. Oh yeah, and these one strap sandals will hide the fact that I am freezing my butt off.

  • lifeisastory

Oh dear. It looks like she left it out in the rain and wind for a while before she put it on .

  • Jessica Freeman

Look hunny, you knew about this event, you did not have to throw something together last minute. I’m all about reusing clothes, but try a little next time, K?

  • Sunraya

Poor Keira – she can’t afford shoes that fit!! My heart aches for those feet.

  • conniemd

She’d look more fun if there was some color in the outfit like at the collar and sleeves. But the tulle skirt looks fun. It also looks like she’s been having fun playing, because the seams in her illusion netting sleeves are completely crooked and the shoulder seams are at least an inch too far down her arms. But I’m a Keira fan.

  • murt

I think that’s the same dress she wore for her wedding, except with a sheer top.

  • Gerry Coleman

Get a pedicure already! And eat a sandwich while you’re there.

  • Richard Banger

I read somewhere that this is her wedding dress. Is that true?

  • I like this in theory, but the execution somehow looks sloppy. And that championship slouch ain’t helping.

  • ralish

I don’t understand. What’s with the sheer sleeves? They add nothing, and make her look like she has a very wrinkled upper body. Why not just put on some gold jewelry and, I don’t know, a sweater of some sort instead?

  • Guest

    Apparently it’s her wedding dress.

  • nannypoo

I’ve seen this dress on other sites and everyone is saying OMG she wore it before. I think it’s ridiculous that a woman wearing the same dress twice is worth mentioning, and I say if she likes it she can wear it every day for all I care. The fact that this might be her wedding dress makes me even happier that she would wear it twice. And it’s not even her next wedding!

The bad news is it’s not attractive or weather-appropriate, and her hair looks crappy, and those shoes are beyond hideous. And I don’t like her makeup.

    • sagecreek

No one cares that she wore it twice. Some of us care that the reworking was poorly done and badly executed.

  • Nika E

Is there like a rule in Hollywood that says u can’t paint toe nails? Geeze…

    • Nika E

Oh, and she looks a hot mess. Not because she’s worn this dress several times but because she looks incredibly sloppy.

    • Tatiana Luján

Hr toe nails actually seem to have a very demure nail polish.

  • Tatiana Luján

The sheer top isn’t pretty and doesn’t look good tocked under the dress.
The dress itself is very pretty, I wih she’d worn it with a jacket or a (fake) fur cape.
Her posture is terrible. he would look much better if she stood up straight.

  • Not applicable

some get this girl a meatball sub. STAT!

  • KT

Ew. All I see is wrist fungus and illusion netting. And shitty shoes.

  • mrspeel2

You do know it was her wedding dress, right?

    • veleri

      yep! it is!

  • katiessh

i like this because this is her wedding dress which she’s added sleeves to. It’s cool that she didn’t have the kind of dress you can never wear again. so industrious!

    • Laylalola

The sleeves kill the look. Really, anything would have been better — heck, I might even have liked it with, say, funky red sleeves or something.

  • LeelaST

Yay! One of my irrational hates in horrible shoes & horrible dress – those sleeves are awful!

  • Danielle

    The makeup is… off? Somehow?

  • ThaliaMenninger

The dress is ok but bunching weirdly in the armpits, the hair is terrible, and the shoes are so fug I don’t even know what to say. She’s looking like Miss Havisham, the Early Years.

  • quiltrx

On my completely rational hate list…and I hate the shoes and the dress is bizarre with the disappearing sleeves. Her hair looks okay. That’s the best I’ve got.

  • BrooklynBomber

how do those shoe’s stay on?

  • MannahattaMamma

  • DeniseSchipani

At first I was going to be embarrassed to admit that my wedding dress (13 years ago) had sheer organza sleeves. But then I remembered, it was a WEDDING dress. The only thing Keira’s missing here are her toe shoes and a severe bun and she’s ready for the ballet.

  • SewingSiren

I like the dress. But why is she standing like a surly teenager who doesn’t want their picture taken?

  • Laylalola

Hideous. And it doesn’t help that she’s all hunched over.

  • alinana

*Handing her a brush* Do something with your hair, hon.

  • formerlyAnon

Keira Knightly is always gorgeous. Well dressed and coiffed, she’s outrageously gorgeous. At her best, she’s incredibly striking AND gorgeous. So, I guess it’s down to my relentlessly hetero orientation that if her clothes aren’t interesting, she’s of no interest to me.

Also: Illusion netting/similar sheer fabric are not intrinsically interesting fabric. ILLUSION NETTING [and similar sheer fabric] DIE DIE DIE!

    • demidaemon

      *raises pitchfork in solidarity*

  • I’d like the dress better if it were something other than sheer illusion netting crap for the sleeves. That takes it into tacky and cheap for me.

  • CT14

    Ice skating dress.

  • Mary Lauer

Too bad her makeup makes her look like she is playing in The Corpse Bride. So does the dress, come to think of it …

  • Addicted2Glamour

Is no one going to mention those dreadful sandals!? I don’t care if they are Jimmy Chooo and that they probably cost more than my last car payment. They are total BOGO.
ETA my last TWO car payments!

  • amaranth16

Bodice looks like a mummy. Sleeves look like leprosy. Posture unforgivable. So much missed potential here.

  • Sara Brams-Miller

That’s the same dress she wore for her wedding. No shit.

  • nicewilliams

Is that her wedding dress over a chanel top?

  • lundibleu

Not loving the dress here – it certainly doesn’t look like it ought to be a Chanel. Maybe it’s the nude sleeves etc, but it doesn’t quite work right.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I love it. I don’t know why but I just love it.

  • judybrowni

    And stand up straight, dear.

  • guest2visits

How sad is this. I don’t think this is anyone’s. Possibly HBC. But still it’s a bit of a frumpy wreck, to me.
    AND THE SHOES…oh hell no.
