Kate Mara in J. Mendel at the “Her” Premiere

Posted on December 17, 2013

First impression? This is cute. But we’re going to have to remain firm on this one. It’s freaking December and you’re not on a Carribean cruise. Enough with the spring clothes for Christmas, starlets.

“House of Cards’ star Kate Mara attends the premiere of “Her” in Los Angeles in a J. Mendel cargo metallic leaf jacquard two tiered sleeveless top and and ivory leaf motif embroidered tulle crepe back mini skirt paired with a Charlotte Olympia clutch and heels.

J. Mendel Spring 2014 Collection

Isn’t it cute how we stamp our little feet and issue edicts? Nothing will change on this front, mainly because there’s so much pressure for stars to be fashionable but only so many outfits to be handed out, but we feel we have to at least maintain the appearance of putting up a fight. If she’d paired that top with a slightly longer black skirt, or even better, black pants, this would’ve looked dead-perfect. Except for the shoes, of course. They’re hiddy.

Hair and makeup: a little blandly doll-like, but pretty.

Well the top looks like wrapping paper and the skirt looks like Grandma’s Christmas dinner table so… DONE!

      • Pennymac

After this comment ^^, nothing more needs to be said.

    • charlotte

      Scrolldown cold!
ETA: Okay, she is in LA, but I can’t imagine hot temperatures right now.

      • KingCrazy

We’re in the low 80’s this week in LA. No seasonal dressing required.

    • MilaXX

Ugh! Well at least she’s in LA. I truly feel for the gals in NYC events dressed like this. Meanwhile the guys are wearing boots with their suits. Completely agree, give her a black skirt & some pumps instead of these Elle Fanning castaways.

    • kimmeister

The hair is simple, but I think the cut/color look fabulous on her.

      • BrianaJC

agreed, I don’t think her hair has ever looked better!

      • Danielle

        I totally agree!

    • Rand Ortega

      Brrrrr….

    • LaSylphide

She looks like Keiron (sp?) Shipka. (What happened to the search?) Love the top.

      • JoDo11

        Kiernan.

      • boweryboy

So it wasn’t just me who thought this!

    • raffe

I’m going out myself as a bad bitter kitten but declare that I don’t give a shit about seasonal dressing. It’s LA, she’s probably warm enough and it’s pretty. So what?

      • DTLAFamilies

I’m with you. It was 82 today in LA and there were girls walking around in chunky sweaters and boots and I thought they were going to pass out from heat stroke.

        • Sam Smith

I’m in So. Fla. and I often, this time of year, dress warm when I leave my house before 7 am and it is in the 60s and then I have the problem when I go out to lunch and it is in the 80s and I’m wearing tights and a wool sweater (happened to me yesterday). I only get so many chances to break out my cute winter wear, so I embrace it only to suffer mid-day and have the tourists (in their tank tops and shorts) look at me funny.

          • raffe

I’m in London. Oh, to have minimal chances to break out cute winter wear.

            • Constant Reader

I feel your pain. I’m in southern New England and it was 15 degrees F when I was shoveling my driveway last night.

      • manina

I agree, the winter attire is for northern latitudes. Also, I imagine that a celebrity will come to whatever event in a coat and then hand it to an assistant; I would guess that most venues are not cold once you are inside (unless it’s the David Letterman show).

      • tereliz

If it’s in the 80s it’s definitely too hot to wear a bubble-wrap skirt. Just sayin’. ;)

    • KingCrazy

She’s so pretty. I’d go straight for her.

Also, she looks like an older Kiernan Shipka. Like, identical.

    • Dee

Are the designers only sending out Spring stuff or something? It’s been everywhere. Come spring, they’ll all have to wear Fall collections now.

      • marlie

I think TLo have talked about it before, but yeah… NY Fashion Week in September launched the designs for the Spring 2014 season, so now that’s all they want the ladystars to wear. In February, they’ll be showing their fall stuff. It makes no sense to “normal” people, but I guess that’s how the fashion industry works.

    • Jaye Tyler

My first thought upon viewing the thumbnail was “My, but Kiernan Shipka is looking so grown-up these days!” I realized it wasn’t her when I saw the hiddy shoes. Girl, when you’re being out-dressed by a pint-sized teeny-bopper version of yourself, perhaps it’s time to reassess.

      • makeityourself

Those hiddy shoes yet again. She’s in love with them and they are hid-eeee-yus.

    • Adrianna Grężak

In similiar news, I am really looking forward to the second season of House of Cards

    • Joanne Abrams

      love the top

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Love the hair and the top. It would have made a nice dress.

    • susu

This is a WERQ for me! ((ducks and runs for cover)) Love that she chose separates. To my eye, there’s even something wintery about the color palette, patterns and texture. And I adore the clean, minimalist hair and makeup.

      • GillianHolroyd

I can’t remember her RC looks except that I’ve never found them particularly interesting. But this I like for the reasons you pointed out.

    • Jonquil

At a glance, I thought this was Kiernan Shipka. Of course, Kiernan Shipka would be better dressed.

    • Anna_Cecilia

Those are the most butt ugly shoes I’ve ever seen. Also, get a pedicure if you’re going to insist on wearing sandals.
I concur that the top looks like gift wrap.

    • TwiddlyStun

I had no idea they made skirts out of printed bubble wrap.

      • tereliz

lol, that was my first thought too!

    • Sunraya

I don’t like any of it!! I do like her with blonde hair, though. She always looks so depressed on the show.

    • Sarah

Those shoes give a whole new meaning to “sandal toe pantyhose.” Fie on them.

    • Mightiadd

All these actresses should be required to wear appropriately seasonal dresses, like a long sleeved transparent gown with a sequin at each breast, and a thigh high slit in the skirt that reaches her visible panties, but from a FALL/WINTER designer collection!

    • Imasewsure

Love this look on her from head to (even the ugly shoed) toe. That hair color is perfect on her!

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I’m pretty sure I would hate that skirt in any season.

    • Tatiana Luján

I love the hair, so shinny, clean and healthy. The top is kind off cool, but the rest of the outfit can burn.

    • MoHub

Liking it down to the hipline, but it stops there. I’d like to see the top with a pair of black cigarette pants.

    • 3boysful

I cannot with the see-thru skirt and the palm/fig leaf over the lady bits. Get a lining.

    • teensmom99

      Yes to the black pants!

    • marlie

Very pretty. I wish the skirt was a little longer, and then it wouldn’t seem so spring-y to me. But I still like everything down to the ankles. I HATE the shoes.

    • KinoEye

Those sad stripper shoes can go die in a fire. Right now. They make me angry, and you don’t want to see me angry when I haven’t finished my first cup of coffee.

    • crash1212

I’m annoyed that she didn’t wear those killer J. Mendel shoes. They are killer and were my absolute favorite runway shoe for the season. Other than that, she looks cute…even in inferior shoes.

    • Andrea Lentz

      but it’s so pretttty

    • ThaliaMenninger

I wonder how much they would have to pay her to play Sally Draper in a flash-forward to 1985 at the end of Mad Men.

    • decormaven

Missed it when she didn’t choose black pants for that top. And struck out with those shoes.

    • Diego!

Well at least this girl has more faces than her sister and her AudreyBot. I wish she had worn a longer green skirt too. That would have been awesome!

    • Jeannie Shmina Greenwald

      Her hair color is beautiful.

      I’m not minding the outfit.

    • French_Swede

I think the dress looks somewhat Christmas-y. It’s been in the 70’s here in SoCal and this is what people are wearing. I love her lightened hair color, it works beautifully with her skin tone.

    • Le_Sigh

At first glance I thought this was Kiernan Shipka

    • msdamselfly

I disagree. I think the white skirt looks wintry

    • paintedfish

isn’t it 80 degrees in LA right now?

      • somebody blonde

        70, but the point stands.

    • heuristicvalue

I might be the only one who doesn’t like the blonde. She looks way more interesting with auburn hair. Yawn.
