Julia Roberts in Proenza Schouler at the “August: Osage County” New York Premiere

Posted on December 13, 2013

Kind of an odd choice for her. If you held up these pieces, we’d never have predicted they’d wind up on Julia.

Julia Roberts attends the premiere of premiere of “August: Osage County” at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York City in a Proenza Schouler dress paired with Charlotte Olympia shoes and Wilfredo Rosado jewelry.

Nothing here seems quite her style, from the fussy skirt to the bridesmaid shoes. Granted, she’s always been kind of no-nonsense in her public style and we suppose a relatively simple dress with matching pumps is about as no-nonsense as you can get for a film premiere red carpet. Even so, we’re not loving the overwhelming plainness of the top half ,and while we can’t say the bottom half is wrong for her – she does have a spectacular set of stems, after all – it’s distracting to our eyes because it looks so off somehow. Girl, that’s not your skirt. Too stiff and at the same time… frivolous somehow. Julia don’t do frivolity.

On the compliments side of the discussion, her hair and makeup look great and we’re absurdly pleased to see a ladystar wearing:

a) A necklace, because so many of them appear to be allergic to them, and

b) A  piece of jewelry with a little shape and color to it instead of the trend lately for blandly simple and modest pieces.

We think she’s going to be making some unexpected style choices on this poledance. Stay tuned, darlings.

I actually quite like the dress. It’s the shoes that I hate.

    • lifeisastory

I agree. I don’t understand why these cheesy oversized platforms won’t go away. They’re do ugly and don’t do anything to enhance your feet and legs. I can understand them, for the few who actually want to be taller, but why does anyone else wear them?

      • Jessica Freeman

Honestly don’t dislike a very small platform on the front to help balance out the heel (when wearing)…but when it reaches hockey puck level its just ugly.

      • kimmeister

I’m guessing that Julia doesn’t have particularly small feet, but even she gets sent shoes that are too big for her? What gives!

  • HomeOfficeGirl

The shoes are the thing that really seems the most ‘un-Julia” to me… And the sleeves are a skosh short. Otherwise, a pretty great opening look for Julia!!

    • tereliz

Love the color on her. But this whole outfit reads more “Emma” than “Julia” to me…

  • she needs something at the waist to cinch her in a bit, this dress makes her look wide.

    • Spicytomato1

I concur. I was thinking she looked unnecessarily boxy. The neckline and necklace are working for me, though.

    • d4divine

I was just about to type that. Lol

  • TrixieConQueso

I am going with…Roller-Skating Waitress Uniform…matching purple skates would be excellent. In the last shot, she is like, “I will get to your car IN A Minute.”

  • Fraggle

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the necklace! Santa, pleeeeaaase!

    • barbarienne

It’s got a kind of funky, boho chic to it, but made of what I assume are tourmaline and diamonds.

    • random_poster

      I agree. It is GORGEOUS.

    • conniemd

I almost fell out of my chair at the sight of an actual jeweled necklace on the red carpet and such an interesting looking one. I’ve been begging for them.

      • Fraggle

Right? I really don’t understand the ladystars and their reluctance for some pretty jewels.

    • JulieTy

The designer is my hair stylist’s boyfriend!!!! :-))))

  • Diego!

I think she looks stunning! She is so beautiful and purple looks great on her + great make up + big and great hair + lovely shoes = PERFECT!

  • Lori

The fold detail on the skirt makes it look like very odd formal shorts from certain angles and it looks like they tacked down the V-neck and Julia’s bra is still showing. Also, I hate those shoes. I’m not sure what the thinking was behind this, but it’s not working for me. Nice color though and from the neck up she looks good.

  • AzSportsGirl

She’s on my Irrational Love List.. has been and ever will be since Mystic Pizza. I love this color on her and waist up it’s a total WERQ. Waist down needs to go to Lily Collins.

    • charlotte

Thanks, I was afraid that this was going to be another “We all hate her so much” thread.

      • Sobaika

Only when the feeling of thrill is realized in a completely different way 😉

Sorry, couldn’t help myself. We all have our Irrational Loves.

      • MilaXX

        I do, but that’s a given

      • AzSportsGirl

I’ve used her “tempting but.. No… THank you” line from Notting Hill. It’s a classic.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

She’s not one of my personal favs, but my word, Julia has such a gorgeous smile, and I love this color on her.

  • schadenfreudelicious

Hmmmm…there is something rather diaperish about the way the skirt folds??..yes, a purple diaper with shoes to match….

  • Heather

I love the way the gold platforms on the soles cause a reflection that make her appear to be floating. Celebrities, they’re not like us!

I kind of like the outfit. What bugs is that it’s NOT for December in NYC. (I get that celebrities don’t experience weather in the same way the rest of us do, but they could at least pretend.)

  • gayle

I like dress, mainly for the color, love the jewelry and hate the shoes

  • rissa42210

the top of the dress isn’t good either – it makes her look wide and matronly.

  • annabelle archer

Bulky, boxy, voluminous, etc., etc. And it’s reading polyester, flight attendant uniform. It could be improved upon, but really I’d like to just keep the necklace start this outfit over.

  • Introspective

dress is a great color but agree that the half hearted origami skirt is a bit much. shoes should be burned. but e for effort?

  • TAGinMO

Why Grimace! What great legs you have!

  • misstressofsylar

I have so much hatred for those shoes. I think she would look smashing in any of Vicky’s creations.

    • Ginger

Ooooooh…good call! Of course I (surprisingly) love VB’s collections.

  • Anne

I think the proportions are a little off–she’s quite tall and the dress could sit a hair lower (hemline and waistline both)–but I love the color and the jewelry.

  • Ginger

I love everything from the waist up. The waist down needs help, but color and jewelry!

  • In_Stitches

The slightly baggy fit in the waist coupled with the very basic purple of it all are bugging me. Not in love with the necklace for the dress either. The dress is one big block of color; I think she needed something big and chunky to match it.

  • Jecca2244

that purple looks SO good on her. that dress doesn’t look like a PS at all. and OMG her legs!! wow.

  • Nancer

LOVE the necklace and the color of the dress! ETA: I almost missed the earrings! Those are fabulous too!

  • Judy_S

I think she looks great–love the dress + jewelry. The shoes, oh well.

  • Michael_Jones

I agree with the shape of the skirt, but I think that colour is gorgeous on her.

  • elemspbee

Catchy color. But the dress looks awful on her. Seems like its widening on her before our eyes. Perhaps if it was mid-calf or even full length, and the skirt is slightly less bulky and wide, the potential could have been more closely realized.

  • bertkeeter

    Those shoes… OY!

  • formerlyAnon

Like it waist up. Makes me vaguely uneasy waist down. I deeply admire the results of whatever she’s doing to her face.

    • Erica

Yep. She’s a couple of years older than me, and whatever she is doing is keeping her face looking quite nicely natural.

    • filmcricket

Yup, waist up and between knees and ankles it’s working like gangbusters. Great colour, the necklace is TO DIE, and her face and legs look awesome. And I say this as someone who basically can’t stand her.

    • Sunraya

I don’t know – looks like her eyes are bugging out of her head. i was just fretting over what she did to her face. Almost didn’t recognize her.

      • formerlyAnon

I did think her eyes looked like something had been tugged or pulled or inflated oddly. But I was mostly admiring how nice her skin looks, and that she’s still recognizably herself, as I see her in my mind’s eye, anyway.

  • crash1212

Huh. I like this on her. It’s a beautiful color, it’s simple but has real interest but not too much frippery. Love the necklace and her head looks beautiful. Not loving the shoes, but I’ve become allergic to all platform pumps these days, matchy or otherwise. I’m going to say nicely done Julie. Also, I’m really looking forward to this movie.

  • DTLAFamilies

I think her hair needs an update. Color is great but it’s too long and she’s been wearing it that way for 20+ years.

  • GorgeousThings

The peekaboo bra is quite distracting. I do love the necklace, and her hair and makeup are gorge. And that smile!

  • Mona_Visa

Her face looks a little different. The thought that she may have taken a knife to her face is making me sad. I’ve always loved her. Crap.

Which would explain the unusual fashion choices. She’s trying to distract.

    • MilaXX

There is also a pregnancy rumor out there. So maybe the face is different because of that. The top of this look could also be disguising an early stage pregnancy,

      • Mona_Visa

Oh thank god. Okay. Much better.

  • SewingSiren

Likes the necklace, the neckline, and the color. Dislikes the culottes.

  • Nan

Love the color on her. And I’ll take the necklace, please and thank you.

  • MilaXX

Like the color on her, but I don’t like the necklace or shoes. I’d have done bracelets and pretty much anything except platform bridesmaids shoes.

  • AzulFashion

I think it is the sleeves that ruin the look–making it look like a uniform.

  • housefulofboys

Only thing I don’t like is the skirt, it’s awkward. But from the waist up and the hem down to the ankles, she looks great! Her hair, in particular, is looking healthy and fabulous.

  • marlie

The dress itself is a little disappointing, but I like where she was going with it. I love the color, and the necklace is gorgeous. And her hair and makeup look good, too.

  • SugarSnap108

The color is great for her, and LOVE that necklace. But the shape of the dress is just odd, and the shoes make me angry. I’m emotional about footwear.

  • Jackie4g

I’d have liked that dress better with more sleeve length and another couple of inches longer. Isn’t Julia Roberts about 6 feet tall in real life? Does she stand next to people and have pictures taken in those shoes? The color is lovely but it’s really cold in the NY Metro area, and I am shivering for her.

    • kbshee

The sleeves bother me too. I think the length makes the dress look way too casual.

  • Erica_Vuitton

She’s been wearing a lot of short dresses lately that all look a smidge too short. Wonder if she got her knees done and she feels the need to show them off or something…

    • GillianHolroyd

*Can* one get one’s knees done?

      • bellafigura1

        hahaha, I hope so!

      • Erica_Vuitton

        YES see: Demi Moore

  • Melanie

My prediction: girlfriend is hiding a pregnancy and this dress does the job.

    • French_Swede

That’s been the rumor for the past couple of days, though she’s denying it.

  • Imasewsure

I don’t like the shape of the dress or the length but I’m giving her huge points for getting close to getting it right. Plus COLOR. It’s a start

  • bellafigura1

I think this dress would have killed with different shoes. The shoes (rather than the skirt) are not Julia Roberts shoes. First of all, they look dated, Next, they look too hooker-y for her. She needs something classier and more understated. I’m struggling with what kind of shoe would work? A green suede pump? A rounder-toed black pump? Gold? All would have been preferable …

  • TwiddlyStun

OH I SEE. Julia and Abigail Breslin grabbed each others’ dresses off the rack. Explains a lot.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

I love the necklace, and the *color* of the dress and that’s it. It’s a weird shape and it’s making her look lumpy. And do not even get me started on those DTM bridesmaid shoes!

  • Skorts?!

  • Qitkat

Fabulous necklace! Aren’t those the purple shoes we were wishing Lupita Nyong’o was wearing in yesterday’s post?

  • I love the necklace, but the dress is a mess. The top half makes her look broad, the fold placement in the skirt makes it look as though it’s caught between her thighs. It is a great color on her, in any case. Hair and face look good! The shoes look like something an oil baron’s mistress would pick for a night in.

  • LeelaST

I really hate short sleeves, they widen the bodice/boob area – hardly flattering. The outfit looks modern but too small or little girl/doll-like. Very odd. Necklace, hair & makeup are gorg.

  • Maluca

I just can’t with those shoes.

  • decormaven

Switch the shoes, hide the peekaboo bra, and we’d be talking WERQ territory. That’s a smashing necklace.

  • TerryMH

I love her but she gets it wrong every single time…she looks so fantastic in magazine editorials but so awkward on the red carpet – those shoes make me weep.

  • Melanie

the shoes are hideous & i feel like from the waist up it’s really…2008 maybe? i know that at some point post-HS graduation (in 2002) i was surrounded by that kind of neckline/necklace combo but i can’t for the life of me place it. in any event, it’s dated & not in a cool way.

  • Andrea Lentz

is her bra supposed to be showing??? no. i don’t think it is.

  • nannypoo

This dress is so unflattering I can’t imagine how she chose it.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Matronly. She looks top heavy and blocky.

  • GeoDiva

Is peek of her black bra suppose to be there? Tacky tack tacky

  • Pennymac

Remember when you had to buy that ugly bridesmaid dress and they told you you’d get “lots of wear” out of it if you had it altered to be a day dress? THIS. And those shoes….

  • OpinionatedMtnGirl

    Loooove that necklace!

  • Now I see why you’re rooting so hard for Juliette Lewis. This should be fun.

  • makes you look like a bit of a barn door, dear. and that necklace was made for me, so i’ll take it now. and those better be real emeralds.

  • mdcoon127

Should have been long – dress looks big on her. Shoes would be ok in another fabrication/leather.

  • Gatto Nero

Dress is too short. The waistband appears to hit her lower rib cage and not her actual waist, which makes her look thick. The shoes would be awful in any setting. The jewelry is nice on her.

  • kimmeister

I’m a sucker for a purple and green combo. It’s not only for Batman villains!

  • Those shoes make the baby Jesus cry.

  • jw_ny

That is a beautiful color on her, and pairing it with that fabulous green necklace was brilliant. Shoes and dress style…no.

  • siriuslover

but those crazy eyes in those first pictures! I like the color here. But it seems just a tad casual.

  • sunflower

Agree that this is an odd choice. It doesn’t seem to fit her very well and the silhouette isn’t the best for her body. She’d be better off with sleek pieces by Narciso Rodriguez or Calvin Klein

  • Jacob Bowen

Can she be the trendsetter and help re-start the wearing of jewelry on the red carpet??? She picked a GREAT necklace!

  • SorayaS

Hair and makeup look fantastic as does that colour on her. The dress is weirdly unflattering though and the shoes and necklace are tacky and awful.

  • Alexandria

Julia Roberts has always been an interesting specimen to me because I never seem to find her very attractive in candid photographs but on film she is one of the most beautiful women in the world (all simply one bitter kitten’s opinion). Truly a textbook case of having film presence.
On a more related note- hate the shoes, love that color purple on her, love the necklace, wish her bra wasn’t showing, and DAMN she is aging well. .

  • quiltrx

The neckline of the top is flattering for her…but is that her BRA??? Oh no, Julia.
GREAT necklace, and I’m glad she’s back to more Julia-ish hair!
But man…do those shoes suck or what???

  • DagnyReardon

Those shoes were left over from “Pretty Woman.”

  • Love the necklace & earrings AND the colour of the dress.

  • I think the dress is the wrong length for her killer legs and the shoes really just need to be set on fire. Obviously purple is a good color for her and she her hair/makeup look divine as usual. But this isn’t her dress.

  • If you dumped the shoes, I would be loving this on her. Maybe from this poledance will spring a new and improved post-baby years Jules. As a woman of the same age, I can tell you that the chances are high. Sans diapers to change and spit-up in our hair we find ourselves with a renewed interest in, well, vanity. ha! Love the color that is for sure!
