IN or OUT: Gabrielle Union in Prada at the Alvin Ailey Opening Night Gala

Posted on December 05, 2013

She’s one of our top ladycrushes and we’re genetically predetermined to like most things with a Prada label affixed to them, but this isn’t working for us.

Gabrielle Union attends the 2013 Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s opening night benefit gala at New York City Center in New York City in Prada.

First, it’s disappointingly simple almost to the point of being retro. There’s not a lot of Prada in this Prada. Second, it’s a wrinkled mess. Third, there’s too much blue in that green for her. A greener green would’ve really popped, while this teal looks kinda drab. Fourth, those are the wrong shoes for a slit-to-the-hip gown. She needed something considerably more delicate than that on her feet. Nope. Not feeling this one at all, kittens.

Vote Now!

IN! You’re nuts. She looks gorgeous.

OUT! Tried for Old Hollywood Glamour, landed on ’80s Prom.

Xtina’s waited a long time to hear that the majority of y’all voted her porn star gown OUT.

In. She is and looks gorgeous.

  • teensmom99

IN despite all the problems. I even like the shoes–it all has a Gilda feel. What can I say–I’m a sucker for Old Time Hollywood Glamour and clearly showing my age.

    • Rhonda Shore

IN! Maybe it’s because i saw the Marion Cotillard right before this, but i think she looks gorgeous and i love taffeta…the styling is aces and the color is working for me!

  • sugarkane105

I’m starting to think there should just be a large, walk-through steaming machine before each red carpet. I’m tired of seeing these expensive gowns looking like wrinkled messes. She’s gorgeous, but Out.

    • colleenjanel

Only if there’s a way to isolate the head so that hair and makeup don’t suffer!

  • Jaeda Laurez

It’s a prom dress with a side split. OUT. Although her skin looks lovely, as usual.

    • Introspective

    • 3boysful

Or a slit with a side? There’s more of the former than the latter.

    • Kristin McNamara

I think her skin actually looks a little too made up here. Too much foundation? Too much contouring? IDK.. whatever it’s called when you create shadows… because it’s done SO badly on her cheeks that all I can see in that first pic and second-to-last pic are the lines that you can see on dummies’ faces, where the ventriloquist makes their mouths move.

  • The wrinkles alone make it an OUT. Isn’t it the Fug Girls that say there’s a reason why satin is one letter away from Satan?

    • Introspective

      and this.

    • jen_vasm

Good Grief – there are some ratty looking seams on this qown. Ironing would help a bit, but this design & material demands precision. This looks sloppily executed. Beautiful color, though.

  • SarahVN

Unfortunately, this is an OUT. It could have been so great!

  • mshesterp

OUT. The dress is oddly bi-polar…it’s weirdly boxy and stiff and then she turns to the side and it’s all slutty with that slit-to-the-hip thing. And the shoes are awful. And the bust looks homemade.

    Huh–I’m cranky today. Who knew?

The headsuit can stay. The rest…no, ma’am.

    • sojourneryouth

Yes, it does look home-sewn. Those pokey-outey darts look ridic. I do think it’s a good thing that the color is so dark, because a lighter (or greener) shade would make the fabric look even cheaper.

    • formerlyAnon

No, you’re not cranky. You are accurate.

  • hmariec19

From the collarbones up, IN, but everything else is OUT. Unfortunately, majority rules, so she’s OUT.

  • valerie747

Love the necklace. That’s about it.

  • Latin Buddy

Yikes. Looks like David’s Bridal clearance rack

  • Love these pics. She switches from “I’m going to make your life Hell if I don’t win Prom Queen.” to “Kidding! GAH, Love you. Mean it.” with every turn.

    • CakesOnAPlane

oy, the cheek sucking. It took me a moment to register the actual dress.

  • Donyelle

OUT: Looks like someone dyed a debutante’s gown in an 80s prom color. Also, Duchess satin is NEVER your friend. It’s the shiny cousin of linen.

  • In_Stitches

I’d say there’s too much green in that blue for her rather than the other way around, but then I suppose I’m just being pedantic. It’s the pointy boobs that are killing it for me. Nipple-dart-gate alla Hathaway should have killed them for the year at least, no? OUT.

  • MissFern

i’m with the uncles. i don’t like the color or the collar on her.

  • Janet B

She looks so darn happy. Sorry dear, but this is an OUT.
Horrible bodice that doesn’t do her any favors or fit, the fabric is so 80’s, plus whoever picked those shoes is a knucklehead.

  • MilaXX

OUT! wrinkled prom dress. BTW- Her new show looks sex-ay!

  • cmb92191

It looks very bridesmaid or prom gown. Her hair and necklace are gorgeous!

  • alyce1213

    OUT south of the necklace.

  • Out. It doesn’t fit correctly, and those overly pointy bust darts are making me nutty.

    • ballerinawithagun

Did they do the darts after the dress was completed? There is a waistband, cummerbund sort of area and the dart cuts right through that instead of just being in the upper bodice as it should be.
Although a purple lining in the skirt would have gone a long way to distract from the other problems.

      • its a very odd construction detail. Can’t really make head or tail of it.

  • CatherineRhodes

OUT. Almost impossible to do this satiny thing without going prom/bridesmaid. And without being a wrinkled mess. Can’t a starlet dart into the ladies’ room for a little touch-up with a hand-held steamer before having her photo taken? Seems like an easy fix.

  • Anna Vasquez

I hear everything TLO is saying, but my hands… they rebel… they will. not. type. The O-word.

My inner six-year-old in a tutu is going blank-eyed and chanting, “Preeeetty….”

    • Vickiefantastico

What a perfect description! I’m with you. For all of us princess types, it’s an IN!!!

  • Erica_Vuitton

OUT even her beautiful face, hair & make up can’t save that poor torchered wrinkled mess of a dress. The bodice is all puckered and twisted, the slit is too high and the shoes are clunky AF. NO GIRL. Just no.

  • SugarSnap108

OUT. The material looks stiff and the wrinkles are killing me. I give her face an IN, however, because she’s gorge.

  • ovarB

    Meh. Le out.

  • CPK1

she is an unbelievably ageless beauty but the dress looks like cheap nasty prom attire. The whole thing, shoes and necklace included are pedestrian not chic.

  • gabbilevy

A slight OUT, mostly for What Could Have Been.

    • marlie

There are problems, certainly, but a good steaming could have saved this from being an out for me.

  • Kelly

She’s beautiful, but out. Too pointy, long, wrinkled, prommy, and just way too SLIT. Plus bad shoes.

  • ashtangajunkie

Not even her gorgeous, perfect face can save the wrinkly mess she’s wearing. Out.

  • ralish

Out. Pretty pretty princess from the neck up, slutty bridesmaid from the neck down.

  • MoHub

    Fifth, it’s a slit-to-the-hip gown in a stiff fabric that doesn’t drape.

  • Candigirl1968

Definitely 80s prom. OUT, even if that color works for her.

  • LipstickForPigs

I feel like when you wear a Prada gown, there should be obvious workmanship and style. That’s what’s you’re paying for. This looks like it came out of a cheap Prom/Bridesmaid catalog full of bad knock-offs. Out.

  • Amanda Welliver

Apart from the odd hip-jutting pose on the red carpet how would anyone ever know the skirt is slit to the hip? It looks like it would take a gale force wind to move that skirt,.

  • rissa42210

Out, out out out out! This is so terrible that I can’t believe that I am looking at two in votes at the top. OUT! The color is bad – it looks like teal got sick. The dress a wrinkled mess. Is she wearing something to meant to enhance lumpiness underneath? The tailoring is tragic. There are about 5 yards too much fabric happening. The slit is not sexy. I feel like I can see her ass and I’m looking at the front. And that is not a good thing in this situation. The shoes are inappropriately chunky and clunky. It looks like a trashy, gaudy, out-dated attempt at elegance. And her makeup! Heaves, no! The contouring on the left side of her face makes her look like the victim of a violent crime. I’m sorry, sweetie, but you need to put this dress at the back of the closet with the rest of your unfortunate bridesmaid’s gowns that also happen to be prada, where it belongs.

  • anyalama

OUT, for every reason you mentioned. Also, I don’t think the length is good.

  • Aaminah Khan

Oooh, gurl. I do not like what that dress is doing to your torso. OUT.

  • V No Privacy

Her hair and necklace are too princess. It would have been nice for her to edge it out a bit. Especially with that super-high slit.

Also, are ALL stylists sending their stars out in wrinkled dresses? Is this a new trend? WHY. Whither the portable clothes steamer?

  • Richard Banger

    Wrinkled mess is right. OUT.

Also, someone needs to slap Angelina Jolie for starting that stupid famewhoring leg trend. So sick of it.

    • colleenjanel

To be fair, the leg thrust existed before Angie made it a “thing” at the 2012 Oscars. She just did it so DRAMATICALLY that the Jolie Leg Maneuver(TM) will forever be associated with her.

  • Tatiana Luján

This frock looks cheaper than the H&M gown Helen Hunt wore to the Oscars.
Nevertheless, I love everything from the necklace – up.
She must have an aging portrait in her attic.

  • carnush

You are correct. Wrinkled prom dress. OUT.

  • crash1212

OUT. For all reasons stated. However, everything from the clavicle up is totally IN.

  • mjude

  • tereliz

Something’s wonky with the shape of that skirt. I blame the slit. The bodice is a little sad, too. Just not a good fit, I think. Not the best color for her either.

  • Rebekah B

I’m torn. I’m pretty sure I wore that as a bridesmaid in a wedding once or twice, but she looks gorgeous. Judging on the dress alone, I’ll go with OUT.

  • Nah. Very Miss Teen USA. From head to pose.

  • sagecreek

Out. And I am so done with the Jolie Leg Pose Thingie.

    • Laura F.

Co signed. Desperate C lister is desperate. OUT

  • aeb1986

I’m loving her hair and makeup, and that necklace. I could maybeeee be ok with the shoes but the dress is an out. But overall she still looks amaze so I’ll let her sneak by with an IN

  • amaranth16

I am not wild about the cut of the skirt, but I think the color is to DIE for on her, I think her hair, makeup, and jewelry are kickass (even though I’m not convinced about the shoes). In.

  • Mary Lauer

Out. Due to the lack of Prada in that “Prada” dress! And the too heavy shoe, as was pointed out. I let the wrinkles slide. Everyone has to move/sit, and wrinkles happen.

  • BrooklynBomber

OUT! Tried for Old Hollywood Glamour, landed on ’80s Prom.

PERFECT description. (Though she looks gorgeous from the neck up. What a smile.)

  • boweryboy

OUT. It’s like a bad home ec project.

  • Dixie_Sugarbaker

She is in; the dress is OUT. A ball gown with a side thigh high split? It seems Prada is trying for a refined tacky look. I could see this on “Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta Bridesmaids” edition.

  • flamingoNW

  • Jangle57

From the neck up she is gorgeous but that dress, those shoes, that slit – ugh OUT

  • Sam Erin

    Out out out out OUT.

  • OpinionatedMtnGirl

OUT – face and hair great as always but that is a wrinkled bridesmaid dress

  • marlie

I’m going to have to go with OUT. I LOVE the color, but I think it’s a wrinkled mess. And the darts on the bust are a little bit TOO pointy. Totally wrong shoes, and the necklace looks cheap. But her hair and makeup look great.*

    *needs more lip color.

  • MzzPants

Being a regular in the local thrift store scene, I know that she probably was able to get this dress for a steal on ‘half off all blue tag items’ day. Oh, it’s Prada??? What??

  • I often wonder if these photos are taken before the event in question or after. If she’s been sitting watching Alvin Ailey’s company in a cramped auditorium chair I forgive all wrinkles. If she walked in looking like that, all bets are off. Idle musings aside, the shoes are brutal looking and the slit is too high. She does look wonderful and I love her makeup. Plus the necklace is great. Putting all these on the scales of judgment, it is barely tilting to IN.

    • marlie

You make a very good point. I’ve always assumed that the step-and-repeats were on the way in to the event. I get that a ladystar has to sit in the car on her way over, but there should be an assistant or something with a steamer to get some of these wrinkles out before they step in front of the cameras.

  • Andrea Lentz

    works fine for me! IN

  • Allie Carter

In. Despite the wrinkles. Everything armpit up looks stunning, in particular.

  • decormaven

She’s gorgeous, but sadly, the dress is not. Pity.

  • stubbornthoughts

Not feeling that dress, but I want her face sooooooo badly.

  • Ashley Ellen Wilson

    OUT. Homemade Prom dress.

  • KinoEye

I adore that necklace. Makeup is perfect. But this dress… absolutely does not read “Prada” to me. Looks like a cheap prom dress from Charlotte Russe. She is too beautiful for this, and I expect more from Prada. OUT.

  • jw_ny

Gabrielle has proven time and time again that she can do so much better than this puckery wrinkled prom dress. And…the Jolie leg/slit is ridiculous

  • conniemd

Out for the wrinkles. Just wrong, wrong, wrong to go out on the red carpet with a dress that wrinkled. I do like the dress and the color is gorgeous and it would look great on a lot of women, but isn’t the best for her. I think it’s more a GTNYD. Send it to JLaw whose stylists would steam press the wrinkles and she’d be happy to be wearing something glamorous and not hideaous for a change. It would suit her coloring well, too.

  • pookiesmom

Definite out. Her face/hair look gorgeous, though.

  • frannyprof

OUT. I can’t sign off on a wrinkled gown on the RC.

  • Kristobel

OUT. That is a homemade prom dress. Serving Simplicity realness.

    • boweryboy

      Or a McCall mess.

      • Kristobel

        YES. Or a Butterick bomb?

      • Dagney

Ack! I replied before I scrolled down! lol…We are all on the same page.

    • Dagney

      or McCalls.

  • Maya

in, even if not up to her typical standards

  • Hetha Innis

She is perfection from the shoulders up. But on the dress, Out.

  • VFinn

OUT! It looks as if I’d sewn this dress. And I can’t sew.

  • Trickytrisha

OUT. Stiff, bunchy, wrinkly, schizophrenic dress trying to be elegant, but ending up borderline tasteless with that slit-up-to-there. Clunky shoes. I LOVE that necklace though, and she looks lovely.

  • Jessica Freeman

OUT. From the neck down it all looks so cheap. And we know it’s not.

  • jen

Out. Her face looks amazing though.

  • OUT, but I love the necklace.

  • darlingnikki

Out. It looks cheap and ill-fitting.

  • SewingSiren

Dislike the super high super open slit ,other than that fine.

  • Nonmercisansfacon

Out. She deserves better. Her skin, face and smile all deserve better than that.

  • colleenjanel

It’s amazing to me that I never recognize her when she’s not smiling. That big grin even seems to change the shape of her face!

  • kimmeister

Her jewelry choices are in. It’s nice to see someone wearing just one pretty ring, where rings are supposed to be worn, rather than 9 tacky/weird ones. The dress/shoes are out, though.

  • Jennifer McGuire

*She* is stunning. What a smile! Hair and makeup are flawless, and I love the necklace. Dress, not so much. ’80s prom, indeed. Sadly, sadly, out.

  • AzSportsGirl

Painfully – out. She’s gorgeous but that is no one’s dress. awkward bust seaming and what’ sgong on with the seams in the slit and hem?
I would love TLo to do “After the Game” press conference looks for some of the NBA stars. Her fiance Dwayne Wade wears some AMAZING Prada

  • greymain

    OUT…although her face is lovely.

  • Sarah

I say out, because it is not doing her any favors. It is NHD.

  • Constant Reader

The combination of the full skirt, the to-the-hip slit, and the funky bodice construction makes it all a little too much like a fancy Christmas tablecloth hastily wrapped around her and pinned. OUT. From the necklace up she’s a vision of loveliness, though.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

Face and hair are GORGEOUS but you’re right about the frock. Out!

  • melanie0866

    OUT. Looks homemade.

  • colleenjanel

I wish we had a third option in these polls. It’s not in, it’s not out, it’s just “meh”

  • IAmJ

She’s gorgeous, but OUT for me for the sad boobies alone.

  • Miranda

    oh Gabby…..smh…you’re still beautiful tho!

  • filmcricket

There is something very weird going on with those pictures. In the smiley ones she looks like herself, in the serious ones she looks … less so.

Anyway, I disagree that the colour doesn’t work for her, I love it. And she is stunning. But the dress is just sad. She deserves better. Out.

  • ringthing

Out, that bodice is a wonky mess. Gorgeous face as always.

  • ChelseaNH

I know I ought to say OUT but I’m being unduly influenced by the way she’s got her Ann Miller on in that first pose.

    • sagecreek

Upvote for knowing who Ann Miller is 🙂

  • JasmineAM

Her and Jared Leto must have babies to preserve the “young forever” gene.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

On my monitor that color is beautiful and she looks great for the waist up. But that skirt is too stiff and too wide. I’m goin with OUT.

  • Nika E

this dress looks like it came from Dillards

  • Belvane

I’m getting a Gypsy Rose Lee vibe from this.

  • LuisaNL

prom dress + clompers = OUT

  • butterflysunita

IN. It’s a lovely color on her and can you really say she looks bad? Neither can I.

  • formerlyAnon

Out. SHE’s gorgeous. And I like Old Time Hollywood Glamour. The dress, however. The dress. The dress looks almost home-sewn, albeit fairly well home-sewn, (probably doesn’t when not under bright lighting, but, um, that’s where she was photographed) and yet slit says “show girl.”

The hair, the necklace, HER in the Platonic ideal of the dress, could’ve been out of the park.

(And THIS is an event I would love to have attended. So few of these red carpets happen somewhere I’d actually want to be.)

  • Pennymac

Out. I went to prom in the 80s, and saw this already. She is, however, breathtaking. The dress, not so much.

  • bailey

    out, satin must die.

  • Stella Zawistowski

It’s going very bridesmaid for me, especially with the jewelry. Well, except when she turns and you see it’s slit up to there.

She’s gorgeous and I can’t say it’s awful, but she can do MUCH better, so OUT.

  • Dagney

well, it’s like trampy bridesmaid. or 1985-1987 prom dress.

  • Out. The wrinkles and the poor fit just ruin any potential for pulling it off. Not your dress, girl.

  • Slanted & Enchanted

Out, although it pains me since I normally like what she wears so much.

  • Other than the wrinkles, I think she looks great.

  • altalinda

  • CommentsByKatie

Oh man. Shrieking. It is so difficult to deploy a fully satin taffeta dress, just because the fabric is so prone to puckering and looks horrible under a camera flash. It can be done well with minimal seams/fussiness. This dress is full of darts and seams in satin taffeta – honestly the designer should have known better. The bust seams are actually
interesting in pretty, but there’s no way to appreciate them through the glare and wrinkles.

I would bet that it looks much, much better under soft or dim lighting; so in that respect it’s the stylist’s fault for putting her in this on the red carpet. Fire everyone, darling.

  • Sadly, no – but that makeup’s good.

  • LaSylphide

So much to like (hair, makeup, jewelry, bodice), much more to dislike (awful shape on the skirt, hip-high slit on a full skirt, shiny, satiny wrinkles, Orthopedic shoes). Sadly, out, because from the waist up, she’s stunning.

  • Monabel

Those bust darts hurt my eyes.

  • Qitkat

Out. Nice color but that is not enough. And I don’t want to see any more upper thighs in long gowns.

  • out. my first reaction: that thing ain’t sewed right.

  • lesmaha

Out. 80s Prom. In fact, I think I wore that dress itself to my 80s prom.

  • Nancer

While I totally agree with each and every point you made, I still must vote this IN. She just looks too darn good! Genetics win.

  • lifeisastory

It’s a good-ish dress. Not a WOW, but good enough for the occasion.

  • Synnamin

Out. slit’s too high and hem’s too long. She looks great above the shoulders, though.

  • CarrieBaby

Aside from the lazily made dress, she looks stunning. Can’t believe she’s 40

  • rumcg66

OUT. Boring prom dress trying to be modern with that slit. And the shoes are horrible with it. Uuugh.

  • marcia miller

out. it’s a shiny bridemaids dress with pointy boobs. Love from the necklace up tho!

  • Random Compliments

    OUT. Hiddy.

  • barbarienne

I have to agree with you guys–the wrinkles in the gown were the first thing I saw.

Any dress that draws attention away from Ms. Union’s gorgeous face without providing compensating “Wow, that’s nice to look at” is wrong. OUT.

  • Darva Sutra

Exactly the color and fabric of my 1987 Jessica McClintock teal satin prom dress. And I got the satin pumps died to match, natch! Thanks for helping me relive that… (takes a swig of Stoli)

  • SouthernGirlRena

I agree with everything you just said but I almost want to give her an IN because she is wearing a necklace! A pretty necklace! An appropriate to the outfit necklace! Almost, but it is still an out.
PS: She is stunningly beautiful, especially when she isn’t doing model face.

  • Lori

OUT, for all the reasons that you listed and because I think she needed stronger make-up. I love the necklace though and give her full marks for actually wearing one.

  • LeelaST

OUT. It also looks badly made and ill-fitting.

  • ThaliaMenninger

    OUT. 80s prom it is.

  • Sunraya

I agree, gentlemen – with all of the fun Pradas, this is a boring one!! But this girl is stunning!! What an incredible smile!! I don’t have television, so I don’t know anyone I cannot watch on netflix or amazon. But she is glorious!!

  • Pterodactyl111

In because it’s not hiddy, but she could have done a lot better. A disapproving in.

  • H2olovngrl

It must be said. In 1989, I had a dress that color and that shiny (with sequins!) that I wore to a Nordstrom Christmas party. BUT! In spite of this, or maybe because of it, I still think she looks lovely.

  • anneland

Out. Wrinkled prom dress. Bad shoes. Like the necklace.

  • GillianHolroyd

Poorly sewn, badly in need of a pressing, dull color-although that could be the photo and my monitor-which is certainly not helped by that vivid backdrop. OUT.

  • quiltrx

OUT. 80s prom with weird boob seaming. And she just took it out of her suitcase, so she obviously didn’t give a shit WHAT we thought.

  • Reality TV Casting

    out tacky tacky

  • Big Bear

    In. In. In.

  • Calinda_L

Can we talk about her face for a second, though? Namely: SOOOO GOOD!

  • Love the necklace on her.

  • Tom Markiewicz

In. You’re nuts and she looks gorgeous!

  • GeoDiva

Out…. Its a Winter Ball dress.

  • jjjoy

OUT. but that ageless face and smile is always IN.

  • Claudia

I see nothing but that beautiful face and radiant smile. She could be wearing a bin bag and she’d knock it out of the park as far as I’m concerned. A completely unfair and biased IN.

  • Danielle West

In. I feel like I should hate it but she’s seriously werqing it.

  • mrspotts66

she’s beautiful. hair and makeup = divine.
    dress? no. out.
    the bodice doesn’t fit well.
the slit is WAY too high for that style of dress.
and it looks like a sad, tired bridesmaid dress that’s been hanging in the back of a closet, just waiting for that “you’ll wear it again” moment.

  • Diego!

SHE: IN, she looks stunning and hair and make up are flawless!
Dress: OUT. What an ugly dress! Awful!

  • girliecue

Hard to believe it’s a Prada. Maybe she misread the label and it’s actually a Pradda, or Parda or P’rada. She doesn’t look awful but she doesn’t look stunning either. I abstain from voting.

  • SRQkitten

IN. Want that dress, love the color!

  • Yeah. The dress is prommie, and the shoes don’t work, but still, she’s so darn cute…In.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Ugly Ugly green. Like Army Green Meets Institutional Green, in a Vat of Pine Air Freshner, and then poof – a dress is born…

  • Jacob Bowen

OUUUUTTTTT! The hem is SO wrong, the slit is too high, and from the front it looks plain AWFUL!

  • demidaemon

Just no. Lack of attention to the details in such a simple look makes this a fail. OUT.

  • AnniNoone

She looks beautiful from the neck up, but that gown is stiff, awkward, and ugly. OUT.

  • Tracy Walker

In. Hair and makeup are flawless. Plus, she obviously feels good and thinks she’s rockin’ it, which is half the battle in my eyes.

  • Gatto Nero

The fit is poor, especially in the bodice. Fabric looks stiff and even cheap, somehow. It looks puckered along the side seam. Why all the wrinkles? Shoes too heavy.

  • Fred Vaughn

Out. The fabric is doing perverted things (like not fitting in with ANYTHING ELSE she’s got going on here)!
