IN or OUT: Evangeline Lilly in PAPER London at “The Hobbit” NYC Screening

Posted on December 12, 2013

We’re finding it hard to render a judgement either way on this one, which is why we’re once again turning it over to all y’all.

Evangeline Lilly attends “The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug” New York Screening in a PAPER London maxi gown.

PAPER London Circuit Dress

Here are our thoughts in random order: that color combination looks really fantastic on her. She’s always had an athletic build, so simple, bold pieces that almost resemble activewear tend to work really well for her. Which means there’s a part of us that pretty much loves this on her. But that’s one bigass white skirt and we’re not sure she’s working it all that well. The proportions, along with her natural shape, just make it hang off her, like a tablecloth.

Also: whoever’s doing her hair needs to be exiled from human contact, but that may be overstating it.

Bitter Kittens make the call:

IN! I dig it. It’s turning my head.

OUT! She looks like she hasn’t finished getting dressed.

Previously on IN or OUT: Saoirse Ronan’s stained-glass Peter Pilotto dress was fiercely debated by the Precious Unborn Fawn Debating Society, with the final vote being IN.

OUT for the tableskirt and hair.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

      Tableskirt! Love that!

  • Synnae

I love the colour combo but the shape isn’t doing too much for her. The neckline is great though.

    • tereliz

I hate the color combo. With the shape, it reminds me of an athletic sock. OUT!

  • In_Stitches

The points she lost on the hair alone can not be made up for by any dress, not to suggest that this dress is really helping her case in any way. OUT.

    • Snailstsichr

You took the words out of my mouth. OUT

      • judybrowni

OUT, even tho she may have minions who hold the train of her dress up and out of street muck, and so she don’t trip when she walks indoors, either.

  • Akemi

I like it fine. The hair is terrible, as is the makeup, but the dress is pretty. Maybe a bit too long there. Meh.

    • Vickiefantastico

It would be an in for me if the dress were more slender and hit just above the knee. As it is, I have to vote OUT.

  • NMMagpie

Dress is good, the hair is terrible and that makeup… oh, heck no. OUT.

  • rissa42210

Out. The colors and fabric are undeniably gorgeous, but it’s hanging off of her like a sack. And that is an accomplishment, given the woman is a goddess. I hate hate hate her eye make up. The hair doesn’t bother me. But this isn’t working.

  • Glam Dixie

Can there be such a thing as a Waist Up In? I really don’t’ like that skirt.

    • muelonil

      Scroll down out?

      • Glam Dixie

        Winning!

  • annabelle archer

IN. Mostly because I feel this is the best she’s looked lately.

    • Spicytomato1

      My thoughts exactly.

    • Jessica Freeman

It’s so sad to be graded on a fashion curve around these parts…

  • charlotte

What is nesting on her head?

  • jen_vasm

The 1980s just called to say they are really pissed at her for what she did to their hair.

  • mhlmh

IN. I like the shape. the only thing I really don’t like is the Elvis hair.

    • 3boysful

I know–I like the loose pieces around her face, but with a pompadour??

  • LadyCelia

The hair makes it look like she should be driving a Subaru Brat.

    • Sarah

I have no idea why you said that, but it is very funny. Because that hair says 50′s pompadour, and the Brat says: I don’t know, but it’s hilarious.

  • marlie

Great colors, interesting design, but a fail on the shape/fit. And her hair is terrible, and the makeup not much better. I want to like it, but I have too many quibbles. OUT.

  • TrixieConQueso

Naturally pretty gal is IN, the boring outfit is out. (Secretly likes her eye make-up…seems fun for her…)

    • marlie

I sort of like her makeup, and she really has a spectacular smile; it’s a shame the rest of this look doesn’t quite work for her.

  • Tatiana Luján

In, I like the odd shape of the gown, and the colors look great on her.
Her hair and makeup, on the other hand, are ugly.

  • Clueless_Jock

Need to see this from behind.

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I really like the dress but it’s an OUT for how she is wearing it. Terrible hair, makeup and needs a bracelet.

  • Sarah

Rock-a-doodle tablecloth. And bad eyeshadow, to boot.

  • Fraggle

IN. I think it’s interesting and one of her best looks so far

  • PastryGoddess

If the waist had come up a few inches this would have been an IN. Not a WERQ because she needs better styling and JEWELRY!

  • BayTampaBay

IN! She looks better than the model.

However, I would chop 20 inches off the skirt to make it hit just below the knee.

  • ashtangajunkie

    Out. Swing and a miss.

  • Imasewsure

OUT… yes to ejecting the hairstylist from the planet and no to the dress even though the colors are great on her

  • ModernDowager

yes, it has problems, but I’m calling it an “in.” It’s an unusual and striking dress that mostly works on her. I don’t think you’re putting it too strongly about the hair people

  • Jangle57

Too much white skirt – OUT

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Much, MUCH better than her last outing, which was awful and aging on her. Love the color combo – not crazy about that white skirt, but love the top. I actually do like her hair – again, much better than last time. Her makeup is a little bright, but she carries it off well.

  • In_Stitches

I was so mad at the hair, but the make up and those sad hoops are dragging the look down as well. It’s all just…blah.

  • CommenterFormerlyKnownAsR

IN for me–far from perfect, but it’s striking and she makes it look more elegant than it is, even taking the tableclothiness into account.

  • Jessica Freeman

OUT. This had so much potential, but the drop waist and too long white skirt, paired with the fuckery going on with her head is all a huge no for me.

  • Trickytrisha

OUT the door. Why would she choose her big moment in the spotlight to weird up her look? The hair and makeup are unflattering, and the dress is boxy. With that pompadour she looks like an Elvis impersonator transitioning to drag queen. She used to be lovely, so I guess I’m sad to see this.

  • another_laura

In. Because it’s so much better than the other looks she’s been in. Kind of sporty. Calling it a gown seems like a stretch.

  • fungstyle

Apparently I’m insane, but I unabashedly LOVE that hair.

  • Nicoclaws

She’s channeling our dearest french anti-equality activist Frigide Barjot. OUT.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

That can’t be an easy dress to wear and she’s doing it. I’ll kindly overlook the hair and give her an IN.

  • Ginger

I suppose that I need an intervention because I like the hair (I prefer messy looks to polished) and I kinda wish I could get away with fun eye makeup like hers. Does this mean that my BK card is revoked or put on a probationary status?

    • Sarah

To each their own, Ginger. Their own puffy, eight-inch tall hairdo. ;)

      • Ginger

I’m Texan and a fan of old-school country music. I think it’s required for me to love big hair. Yes, I do still have hot rollers in my closet. Why do you ask?

    • sweetestsith

I love big messy hair too – and this just delights me! …I’ll go sit in the corner now.

  • decormaven

“Whoever’s doing her hair needs to be exiled from human contact, but that may be overstating it.” I bow down! Ed Grimley had better hair.

  • kimmeister

Unabashed IN! I actually love everything about this look (well, except for the shoes that I can’t see). The hair goes with the slightly androgynous vibe of the dress.

  • schadenfreudelicious

Waist up, IN, waist down, bed sheet doubling as skirt, OUT

  • TheLaurenJean

IN! And I actually kinda like the hair? I know that I shouldn’t, but I can’t help it!

  • StarburstLady

    I like it. IN.

  • cleva1

In (despite hair which is silly)

  • PeggyOC

Out. Nice colors, but the hair is truly hideous and the shape is no better.

  • CLoverleaf

Love the dress. The hair is…Rock-a-Doodle.

  • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

OUT. Yes, pretty colors on her but this looks so so shapeless. And her hair is atrocious.

  • kayleymaybe

I’d like it better if that big white skirt was a wide-leg white pant, but still an IN for me. Grading on a Evangeline Lilly-curve, I guess.

  • Carolyne

Let’s hope she didn’t trip and fall. The hem droop alone = O-U-T!

  • jw_ny

    OUT

Really like the blue part of the top, and the black part almost works, but the white part is just way off…too long and doesn’t hang well. I wonder if it’s because she’s so slim in the hips..? If these were pants, properly hemmed of course, I think I’d like it more. What really threw this into the definitive ‘out’ category for me is the hair and blue under-eye shadow. She could’ve used a bold bracelet too.

  • jspark

IN, it’s all about the upper half, I love the texture and the color, I can forgive the rest.

  • MilaXX

IN! Love the Elvis hair, just wish the whispies weren’t there. Love the dress. I think it’s the best one she has worn on this pole dance so far.

  • carnush

    Weird, but IN.

  • Cameron Turner

In! Color blocks look great on her! It’s something different and refreshing!

  • wisenhar

    Is Kristin Stewart her stylist?

  • Bailey Debruynkops

the bigass white skirt is too bigass. out

  • Erica_Vuitton

I thought this was Kate Beckinsale, in fact I would’ve bet money this was her. The pompodore hair is interesting but the dress is too long and the blue eyeliner eegads. EEEEGADS! OUT

  • lesmaha

out. scrolldown fug with that skirt. I love the top, even with the bad hair. so close, and yet so far…

  • Sarah Thomas

I think it’s more a GTNYD. She should send it to January Jones.

  • BobStPaul

In. Love the overall look – including the edgy hair style virtually everyone else hates.

  • crash1212

OUT. Because with a dress like this, it’s all in the details and these details are an epic fail. Also, get a new hair person.

  • Ashley Ellen Wilson

    OUT

  • Joyce VG

    IN from the neck down.

  • VFinn

OUT. The dress was a good idea badly executed. It could have looked so chic and sophisticated if the skirt were more tailored and slim, and if the top, also, fit just a bit closer to the body. The hair bugs me. The color combination does look nice on her, though.

  • boweryboy

IN. I love it, but then again I’m a sucker for a maxi dress. It’s also in a weird way holiday appropriate even though it’s sleeveless. Her hair, however, is a big ole Out.

  • Kate4queen

Out. It’s too long and droopy looking.

  • Janet B

    I want to love it.
Poor styling and too much skirt: OUT

  • Gerry Coleman

Would it have killed her to wear a bra?!

  • Tom Markiewicz

OUT. Lacklustre colour blocking should not be a thing.

  • http://angrynerdgirl.net/ Jessi03

I like the colors and I like the idea behind it, but it does next to nothing for her figure. Also, the hair bugs me. Out.

  • Sara Hottman

HER HAIR. Why does someone hate her? Love the dress on her, though. In!

  • ChelseaNH

Out. Proportions are weird and hair is making me very unhappy.

  • Slanted & Enchanted

Oh, what the hell. I’m voting IN before I look at this too long and change my mind.

    • formerlyAnon

      Exactly my position on it.

  • Anplica Fiore

The color is the only thing going for this whole look – out!!

  • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I would like this so much better if the skirt were palazzo pants, or even a knee-length skirt. As it is, it’s not salvageable, especially when taken along with the hair & makeup. OUT.

  • R. L.

    BLAH. Out.

  • BrooklynBomber

Also: whoever’s doing her hair needs to be exiled from human contact, but that may be overstating it.

No, I’d say that’s about right.

    • Pennymac

      Agreed to infinity!

  • JauntyJohn

IN. Hair aside I think it works

  • trisker

OUT. I can’t get past the hair and the huge white sheet I mean skirt. Nice neckline.

  • formerlyAnon

I’m not looking at the pictures anymore. First glance was “in, but damn shame about that hair.” The more I look the more doubt I have, so I’m going to quit looking and call her “in” mostly because I like the colors on her and I love her shoulders & arms and I think I see what the idea was for the hair, though execution failed.

  • Verascity

    IN. I like it.

  • Laurie Landry

Put hair in blender, press whip. Ta da!

  • teensmom99

IN. Dress is a breath of fresh air.

  • Eovaai

    Droopy sadness. OUT.

  • IraKi

OUT! Because of the crazy hair and the horrible proportions and shape! Ha! JK! There is NO shape!

  • LeelaST

OUT. I love the color combo and the loose-fitting style – but it should have ended above the knee or just below with black pumps.

  • Jen

In. There are plenty of reasons I shouldn’t like this, but I do.

  • Jess Collett

Out. That dress should have been really great – if it had been cut like a 60′s mod dress, or perhaps to the knee. But it does not work as a maxi dress at all.

  • Allie Carter

So cool. IN. I like everything – even the hair.

  • frannyprof

IN. I hate the hair, but LOVE the dress more.

  • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

in, lower case. if she had taken the hem up an inch or too, it would be much improved. i’m digging the athletic style and color. royal blue, black and white can be my school colors. do i get three?

  • barbarienne

Hate the hair, love the top half of the dress. Makeup is good. I suppose I can forgive the scroll-down fug of the skirt, because the top half of the dress is so great on her. A very room-temperature, lowercase in.

  • jen

In! Love the dress. The hair almost made it out out for me though. Almost.

  • holzfaellen

IN! Yes, skirt’s too long, but the top is great and the colours look phantastic on her. I even like the hair.

  • altalinda

Out for the reasons you said.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

In with everything you said. It looks almost too big on her but maybe that’s the stiffness of the dress. It’s definitely her type of dress, but yes, someone please shoot her hair stylist.

  • rloliveira

THe dress would work if the skirt were short, hitting, say, at her knees or just above.

  • Pennymac

In, because I love that dress on her. But that 1980′s mullet-ish hair is a crime against humanity.

  • LaSylphide

In because I. Like her and like the dress. But the hair….ugh.

  • CatherineRhodes

OUT. The whole thing feels underdesigned.

  • insilhouette

I think one of the problems here is the truly gross textile on the bodice. Yeuch!

  • Eric

I think if the white/black portion were raised a bit higher, this would look even more fantastic. LOVE that hair!!

  • conniemd

In, though I wish this were knee length. In the first picture you can’t see who much freaking white there is. The color combo looks fabulous and the blue part is bringing some elf etherealness to her face and hair.

  • GillianHolroyd

Love the dress but it is shapeless on her. Hair, makeup, everything, out.

  • snarkykitten

    ugh, no.

  • demidaemon

The blue is beautiful on here. However, her hair is just awful and this is doing nothing for her figure. OUT.

  • housefulofboys

Shapeless, too long, bad hair, and blue eyeshadow? Out.

  • http://eatyourlipstick.com/ Monica Gallagher

No, it’s awful – and such a disservice to her.

  • KayEmWhy

    I don’t hate it.

  • Bethany Roullett

Hmmm. OUT. It just seems to casual for a NY premiere of a giant honking movie. Perhaps she should have worn this to one of the more brunch-y events during award season.

  • Jacob Bowen

Wow. OUT. Those are some bad proportions. And WHAT is going on with the hair? What style is that?

  • DinahR

IN. I’m not a huge fan waist down though. I love the colors on her and the simplicity of the dress does suit her. I am intrigued by the hair… I want to see the back of it. It’s very 80′s-at-the-end-of-the-evening. That time of night when even Aqua-net has left you and gone to bed. For me it’s a little endearing.

  • SorayaS

I love the makeup and the colour on the top half is just perfect for her but overall this is OUT. I mean, the fit/proportions looks ridiculous and the hair is worse than Harry Styles.

  • Joanie

In, with reservations due to hair.

  • stellamaris73

In. The dress is striking, and the colors are fantastic on her. The hair’s a bit strange, but it’s styled and not a ratty Pinterest braid. And she tried something interesting with her makeup. Let’s reward this good behavior.

  • Scimommy

    ZOMG. So IN! Love it!

  • ThesisMonkey

I was just about to forgive the skirt, but then I flipped through the bottom photos and I can’t allow the cut of those arm holes with this look. They make the top look more like a (boring) separate, which doesn’t help the skirt slumpage. OUT. like the colors though.

  • quiltrx

OUT. It’s not HER dress, but it might be someone’s…but her HEAD. Sheesh.

  • Reality TV Casting

    in in in

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

That silver-turquoise eye-makeup is what is bothering me – it’s not right for this look. If she wanted to go metallic in the eyes, I would have said straight-silver, but I really think this look demanded a classic black smokey eye (and it would have made the green of her eyes pop more. That’s pretty nitpicky, and I still love the dress though, so IN.

  • unbornfawn

Out. The hem is a big puddle which is causing the skirt to hang badly. The hair is a mess. The dress looks great on her, it is too casual for this venue.

  • ankali

OUT because her hair looks like shit. The dress isn’t to my taste, but it suits her.

  • https://plus.google.com/108251075533777132179/posts Frank Lithium

    IN!

  • sunflower

OUT. That hair is dreadful. I love the dress but I think it’s wearer needs more height

  • Allison Moon

IN: I am a lone vote for the hair. It looks fun and cute. Her eye makeup is beautiful and that dress is unique and sumptuous.

  • Claudia

    I like it. In.

  • brown-eyed girl

Liking the almost flapper feeling of the dress, but not the puddling on the floor. Hair is growing on me. Blue eyeliner will never grow on me. Still . . . I vote in.

  • BrianaJC

Half IN – I love the face, hair, top. Needs to be paired with some leather or brocade skinny pants.

  • E. D.

OUT. Hate the skirt, and another example of blue/grey shadow. Is this a thing now?

  • http://mylittleheartmelodies.com/ Kristin Shafel Omiccioli

Hair and makeup are over the top. I think the outfit is great—colors and style—but would be better if that skirt were a pair of wide-legged pants!

  • RedRaven617

I’m IN on this. Love it.

  • Emily Brehob

Tentative in. The skirt is kind of just there, but the look really works for her, for the most part. I actually don’t hate the hair until I look at it closely, at which point I want to hurt someone…

  • lalahartma

I like! One of the better things except the hair!

  • HM3

It needs to be hemmed, but it mostly works, and dammit, it’s different. IN!

  • prettybigkitty

In. Don’t know why exactly, but I like it. She looks like she does, too.

  • leftcoastpickle

    out

  • melanie0866

Eh. The dress is fine, but I agree with you on the hair. She had a pompadour on The Daily Show last night, too, and it’s a terrible look.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I’m good with the dress — love the color of the top and how it looks near her face — but that hair is a big ol’ bird’s nest of no. IN, I guess, by a hair.

  • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

In. It would be better if the skirt was pretty much any other length among all the lengths, but In.

  • Sabin

Out, because the dress works awesomely on the shapeless model, but looks like a lumpy sack on a woman with some curves.

  • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

The more I look at photos, the more white skirt grows on me. So IN on the account of bold and colors. But hair – no, sweetie, please stop.

  • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

    OUT.

Send that off to Tilda or January Jones.

  • Julie Parr

I think if she just hemmed the dress, she’d be golden.

  • Julie Parr

    OH, an IN for me.

  • jjtxgrrl

Definetly IN!!! I like the hair too btw.

  • GTrain

    IN

  • AnniNoone

Haaaaate the hair, make-up, tit support and shaping, and skirt-consumed feet. Other than that she’s golden. OUT.

  • Danielle West

I want to like it but the fit is too, terrible. Out.

  • samo_samo

IN! She looks comfortable, relaxed and the overall effect is very chic. The overall effect is better than it’s individual elements.

  • oohsparkley!

In even with the odd hair.

  • Joey Melliza

this would have been a winner if she hadn’t gone all Elvis with the hair

  • amaranth16

It looks like her dress fell asleep. OUT.

  • H2olovngrl

Below the neck is amazing. Face and hair…notsomuch.

  • Fuchaforever

    SUPER OUT!

  • Shawn EH

Dig it! She’s hot and IN!
