Hayley Atwell in Jasper Conran at the 2013 British Independent Film Awards

Posted on December 10, 2013

We’re starting to think this gal is getting bad advice. She never quite seems to style herself right.

Hayley Atwell attends the 2013 British Independent Film Awards at Old Billingsgate Market in London, Englandin a Jasper Conran black sleevless gown paired with a Jimmy Choo clutch.

Jasper Conran Spring 2014 Collection

We think this dress really suits her in a lot of ways. She’s got the looks to pull off its sort of prim qualities and still make them look chic. But the styling needed to be impeccable and to offer some punctuation points. She needed a far more polished and dramatic head than that, for starters. Head-turning hair and makeup for a dress like this. Also, she needed a kick-ass kind of clutch and one, maybe two statement jewelry pieces. She really could’ve turned this into something dramatic, but as it is, she just looks like a Puritan who got a little hot and removed her sleeves. Just before getting stoned for being a sleeveless strumpet. Okay fine; we didn’t think that comparison through, but you get what we mean.

The Elaine Benes hair is definitely not working for her.

And is she slyly flipping us off in that last shot?

    • teensmom99

I lve calling it Elaine Benes hair.

    • BrooklynBomber

I noticed that finger flip, too. Maybe it’s for whoever said “This is a great look for you. Now get out there and SMILE!”

  • MilaXX

Like the dress, really dislike everything else. That hair is beat the minion with a cell phone levels of bad.

  • Diego!

Had the dress been shorter, this would go in a different category. But this is clearly a mess. Hair = AWFUL . Make Up = NON existant . Clutch = SUCKS.

    • Exactly. I think it would be much better with a shorter skirt.

  • DaveUWSNYC

Someone should start a Renaissance gal-group called “The Sleeveless Strumpets”

  • That new Pope, I tell you, he is bringing some real progression to the Catholics. You go, Sister.

FLDS wife hair with a dress like this? She is getting bad advice, or none. Screams for bracelets and some bigger hair and makeup.
    Also, it’s too long.

  • lunchcoma

The Frontier Wife hair wouldn’t be great worn with anything, and it’s a disaster with this dress. She needed to go with something far more modern.

  • Monkey Toe

I wonder if one of those McQueen knuckle duster clutches would’ve worked with this to edge it up?

  • barbarienne

Another where they didn’t hem it! WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY….

  • charlotte

    No, no, no, no.

  • marlie

She should have gone slightly edgier in her hair and makeup to balance out the primness of the dress. And lipstick. And a colored clutch.

  • Clueless_Jock

    That’s a hair don’t.

  • Anna_Cecilia

The Mother Superior was feeling generous and decided Maria could use a night off.

  • mrspeel2

“…but as it is, she just looks like a Puritan who got a little hot and removed her sleeves. Just before getting stoned for being a sleeveless strumpet.” ROFLMAO!!

Make sure you put that in your highly-anticipated future tome: “Best of TLo: Quotations”!!

  • hughman

    A flibbertijibbet! A will-o’-the wisp!

    • kimmeister

I’m going to be singing that all day now.

    • decormaven

How do you solve a problem like this? The Von Trapp curtain lederhosen were cuter than this look.

  • Imasewsure

Add a big scarlet A and her outfit is complete…

    • MikeW_Vegas

LOL I was thinking Hester Prynne myself as I was looking at it.

  • Sarah

One wonders what shoe is hidden in those navy draperies. A button-up boot? A wooden clog? Maybe a rope sandal?

    • alyce1213

      Definitely sensible shoes.

    • decormaven

I vote for the wooden clog. This is a very penitent look.

    • black orthopedic nun shoes. and heavy black stockings.

  • zenobar

Is it just me, or would a black patent belt have bumped this up several notches? That, and a really fabulous 40s-style updo.

    • fursa_saida

At this point, I wish she would just style her head 40s-style all the time. She looked so gorgeous styled that way in Captain America.

  • frannyprof

I agree, this SO could have been a great look. I actually love the dress. Too bad about the styling (or lack thereof).

  • Nicholas

    The (Cry for) Help.

  • kirkyo

    hilarious write up.

  • Tracy_Flick

    NO on the governess hair.

    • Tatiana Luján

      that’s sad Jane Eyre hair.

    • MikeW_Vegas

Maria had better looking hair than this..

      This is Mary Poppins hair

  • muelonil

I sort of love this dress. ::shrug:: But I guess straight hair like the model might have been more modern with it.

  • Janet B

She shouldn’t wear her hair in that style even to try on clothes, let alone walk out the door.

  • Kate4queen

Wait…Jasper Conran is still designing clothes?

  • Introspective

strumpets of the world unite!! (but with better makeup and styling than this girl)

  • Tatiana Luján

She’s too beautiful for those hair and makeup. Go for a sleek hairdo, wash your face and ask for stonger makeup.

  • BrooklynBomber

Oh, my. She must have already gotten stoned.

  • Jaye Tyler

I honestly think the only problem here is the makeup. A dramatic lip and smoky eyes would have taken this to another level.

  • LeelaST

Def needs a hair/makeup redo. As is, all it’s missing are sleeves and a giant red A.

  • Bexxx

    Get. A. Manicure.

  • Reminds me of Carrie Underwood’s “postulant” habit in the recently televised “The Sound of Music”.

  • kipper

I totally love the model, and not really at all on her – is it just the fit ? the one or two inches at the hem, just change the whole look from mod to dour !

  • Angela_the_Librarian

The perfect accessory would have been a red A to go with the Puritan Strumpet theme!
ETA: Oops, someone had the same idea further down.

  • I choose to believe she’s flipping off her hair and makeup people in that second picture. Don’t blame her a bit.

  • Somebody has a Victorian governess fantasy. Jane Eyre realness.

  • TweeAsFuck

Prairie woman who lost her sleeves.

  • Jacob Bowen

    HEM IT!!!!!

  • kim bunchalastnames

that collar is simply MADE to showcase a dramatic pendant. right now, she sort of looks like a sleeveless nun.

  • Adibug

Chop it off below the knee, use the extra fabric to flare the skirt out and switch to some red patent leather pointy pumps and matching clutch. Also tidy the hair and switch the earrings for some gold or red studs.

  • amanda siegelson

she looks like a stepford wife. love the movie, but not this look.

  • jif

Better in navy. Better yet, not at all.

  • tinyredlocks

“Sleeveless Strumpet”. I must find a way to use that phrase daily….

  • Kelly

Argh, she’s got that 19th-century prairie-wife hair again. It really does nothing for her. I expect to see her hauling out the washtub like Ma Ingalls or somebody.

  • ankali

I was going to disagree with the uncles because I thought that the severity of the look put all of the focus on her really interesting face. However, I reconsidered when they mentioned the need for impeccable styling, because it reminded me of Lena Headey’s 2012 Golden Globes dress. That one was Puritan-chic perfection. Also reminded me of the Chanel dress that Carey Mulligan and Debbie Harry (I think?) wore earlier this year in a couple of photo shoots. So yeah, lazy wrong styling on this one, a missed opportunity.

  • unpious

    Sexy Emily Dickinson Halloween costume.

  • she looks like mary poppins dressed as a pilgrim. with no sleeves. who is she, anyway?

  • bertkeeter

Norman Norell inspired? Needs a tad more structured collar…this lays too flat along with a less full, just a tad, skirt!
