GTNYD: Laura Carmichael in Mulberry at the 2013 British Fashion Awards

Posted on December 03, 2013

Oh, Lady Edith. So close. If it’s any consolation, Lady Mary sucks at the red carpet most of the time too.

“Downton Abbey” star Laura Carmichael attends the 2013 British Fashion Awards at London Coliseum in London, UK in Mulberry.

Mulberry Spring 2014 Collection

Girl, That’s Not Your Dress Look. Definitely Not Your Pants. And the top, in navy blue, doesn’t photograph well at all. It goes all shiny and cheap-looking. Makeup’s okay and the hair would’ve garnered  a ton of praise from us if she didn’t have so many flyaways. Seriously, did she rub a balloon on her head or something?

That’s a clutch you bring to a co-worker’s wedding.

    Give this to SWINTON.

    • Aurumgirl

      So she can burn it.

  • Coleen

I thought it was Keira Knightley at first glance. Oh, EDITH.

  • alyce1213

I kinda like it better on the runway — it’s a skirt there, isn’t it? Her trousers need to be tighter on top. These are making her look wider than she is, and they’re way too long. It occurred to me that the flyways may be static electricity from walking on the RC. (I hate when that happens to me.)

  • ashtangajunkie

    Sad, puddly ‘no.’

  • Feet. There should be some.

  • MilaXX

    Those pants…..

  • sojourneryouth

Awwww. She looks like I looked in my junior prom photos–uncomfortable, awkward, and not sure I’m dressed right. Although, I think those are FMO pants, so it isn’t entirely her fault. If one has anywhere near realistically-proportioned nether-regions, there is no way you aren’t going to look like a bounce house from the waist down.

  • mickiemonkey

Too bad she has no feet.

  • Smile through the pain, L. Smile through the pain…

  • Qitkat

Although I agree GTNYD, she is such a pretty modern woman.

    • Constant Reader

I agree! I keep wondering how they make her look so plain on the show. Ditto the woman who plays O’Brien — also gorgeous IRL.

  • Constant Reader

Would some jewelry have killed her? A statement necklace would have made me SO much more forgiving of the puffy pants and lack of feet.

  • hughman

    Ninja Prom.

  • tereliz

Love this girl and her face is so lovely, but there’s not much that can save this pantsuit, not even proper hems. Speaking of which…

WHEN WILL THE HEM-MADNESS END?!?!?! That poor girl is MELTING! Does Rachel Zoe—who I will always blame for this hem-strosity zeitgeist—not see how RIDIC (that’s bad, Rach, not good) people look with no FEET? This is why Brian Atwood is going to stop loaning RZ shoes. Burn.

    • alyce1213

Oh how I hate the Rachel Zoe puddles. (Also Rachel Zoe too-long sleeves)

  • msdamselfly

I still think she looks better than usual. Her makeup and hair are lovely

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Did all the celebrities get together and say “hey let’s all go to the 2013 British Fashion Awards — but we’ll all dress in really shitty outfits, won’t that be fun?”

  • Tatiana Luján

hem the pants and this, though not a good look, would look much better.
    Her face looks lovely.

  • Blair Sylvester

what is with the Olivia Pope elephant pants ? Power is pants that look like a skirt? Also when your pants obscure your shoes it doesn’t help the image that you are being swallowed by oversized pants

    • marlie

And pants that are likely to make you trip and fall flat on your face =/= “powerful.”

  • zenobar

There is never an appropriate time for palazzo pants. Unless one is actually lounging in a palazzo.

    • decormaven

She’s drowning in the palazzo. Throw out the lifeline!

  • decormaven

“That’s a clutch you bring to a co-worker’s wedding.” So. Much. Word.

  • Maluca

The outfit definitely sucks but… Lady Edith is really pretty! I hadn’t seen her in “real life” and now its just so sad they ugly her up so much on the show! LOL

  • JuliaInBlack

Her hair must’ve been mussed up by the mugger who stole all her jewelry (and passed on taking her bag).

  • Blair Sylvester

Her expression is like “i know guys this is awful right” and that makes me smile

  • Nancer

GO HOME AND PUT SOME JEWELRY ON. Humph. Sorry for yelling, I just feel strongly about this.

  • Sue_Asponte

Aw, she looks so pretty. Not red-carpet ready. But pretty.

  • stellamaris73

The outfit is ehh. But she’s veering a little close to Duchess Kate/SJP territory with that eyeliner.

    • Tracy_Flick

I hate that eyeliner so, so much. Terribly unflattering.

  • ballerinawithagun

Just reminded me, I have a great black jumpsuit that I love, hanging in the closet because I need to hem the pants. I kept thinking I’d wear gigantic platforms again, but NO.

  • Ediths_Head

No, I have to give her the hair. I really like the tousled-ness of it. If the eyeshadow were not so fawn, I’d give her the face as well. But, y’all are right, the outfit is tragically modern-day Lady Edith.

  • quiltrx

Did they tell everyone who came to this event to make sure to screw up a significant portion (if not all, Sienna) of their looks?
The pants need a hem and this badly needs some jewelry.

  • Tom Shea

Other than the hem of the pants, I like it. She looks lovely.

  • Danielle

    I’m enjoying her haircut, though.

  • marlie

The pants are too voluminous, but if they were in a narrower silhouette, or if the bottom were more like a pencil skirt, this could work. And I think her hair and makeup are soft and pretty, though a little too simple, considering her clothes and the event. And the clutch looks like a makeup case.

  • tintashoopa

“Rubbed your head with a balloon”!!

  • effie

i think i would have liked this on carey mulligan?

  • Imasewsure

Head to toe awful but definitely worse from the neck down

  • kittenwithaquip

Based on the your posts “English Fashion Awards” would seem to be a misnomer or in the very least, a highly ironic event.

  • Ann VerWiebe

    Bridesmaid in very unflattering pants.

  • nannypoo

I know she’s supposed to be the plain Crawley sister, but I think she is by far the most beautiful. She looks gorgeous and sexy here, but that outfit is crap.

    • Pennymac

Well said. Crap indeed. *In my dowager voice*

  • Trickytrisha

Puddle pants give me the pip.

  • KT

This is not so close, this is quite far away. It manages to be both boring and unflattering as hell. Hair and makeup look great though. Ohhhh lady Edith!

  • jif

However, Girl, That’s Your Make-Up and Hair.

  • Jacob Bowen

WHAT IS WRONG WITH JEWELRY LADIES?!?!?!? Since when did we stop wearing it at red carpets??? I will GLADLY take all of the jewelry that you aren’t using!

    • conniemd

Me too. I hate to go anywhere without earrings and a necklace or bracelet. Accessorizing is one of the joys of life.

  • Kristin McNamara

Anyone else think she’s a dead ringer for Olivia Palermo in these pics? I don’t normally, but holy cow, she is in these…. (especially the one where she’s tucking her hair behind her ear).

  • GillianHolroyd

Pants aren’t supposed to have a train.

  • MannahattaMamma

fashion disaster, facial success. makes me realize that they have to work pretty hard on DA to make Lady Edith look so plain. Note to self: if ever invited to red carpet event (HAAHAHA) do not opt for two-piece navy blue outfit b/c you will look like a runaway flight attendant.

  • When I first looked at this, I thought, “That’s the best Lena Dunham’s ever looked!” Edith, you’re so much prettier than that though.

  • lifeisastory

I really hate the cuffs dragging on the floor. People look so weird without feet. When will this trend be over?

  • Oh, dear.

  • amaranth16

I wouldn’t be caught dead with that clutch at a coworker’s wedding.
