GTNYD: Emma Thompson in Camilla and Marc at the “Saving Mr. Banks” LA Premiere

Posted on December 10, 2013

Looks like someone had a stylist thrust on her by a Hollywood studio who doesn’t go for her quirky British red carpet schtick:

Emma Thompson attends the premiere of “Saving Mr. Banks” in Los Angeles in a Camilla and Marc dress.

Camilla and Marc Resort 2014 Collection

It’s too tight on her, obviously, but it’s a good choice and she looks very polished. Unfortunately, she also looks a little miserable. As much as we tend to agree with the need to let a professional style her, we think the best celebrity stylists figure out a way to marry their client’s personality to whatever professional obligations they’re fulfilling. This may be the most classically chic Miss Emma’s ever looked, but it’s so clearly not her style that we tend to feel sorry for her rather than cheer on the improvement. Those clasped hands don’t lie. She hates this. Her stylist needs to find a way to let her be herself while still looking put together. This isn’t the way.

Girl, That’s Not Your Dress. Pack it up and send it off to Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who’ll make it sing. Let’s get you in some funky Vivienne Westwood thing.

Yet another act of Disney-induced oppression. Free Emma!

      • Monabel

Right! Disney is the root of all evil!

      • beebee10

Free Emma! I want that t-shirt

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Oh god – now I want someone on deviantart to make me a tshirt with the Disney princesses in orange jumpsuits and Free The Disney Eleven on it. How can I make that happen?

    • hughman

“Well my daughter could have probably done better but he’s a doctor after all and it’s her life. Can I please get another glass of bubbly?”

      • decormaven

        Spot on! MOB indeed.

        • E. Sevilla

what does MOB mean? genuinely curious. is it mean that the first thing i thought was “miserable old bitch”? (answer: yes)

          • SRQkitten

            Mother of the bride.

            • E. Sevilla

              ENLIGHTENMENT! thanks

    • MilaXX

If they had sized up I’d like the dress. The shoes are different story. Sorry, this is a swing and a miss.

      • 3boysful

Also it needs the patent belt.

    • http://www.luxperdiem.com/ Paige @ LPD

the top is fine, if they just would have let the skirt out an inch or so around her belly if would have been a win. To be fair I’m sure it didn’t look at tight without that flash.

    • Scimommy

She might not be miserable because of the dress. She might be miserable because of where she is – she has stated repeatedly that she does not like going to LA/Hollywood. I think the dress looks fine but is too tight. Also, the shoes are pretty ugly. Also, also – Emma Thompson in Vivienne Westwood? She may be British, but she is not Helena B-C. Not sure how well she would pull that off.

    • housefulofboys

I love Miss Emma, and I just won’t tolerate anyone making her unhappy. Free Emma!

    • frannyprof

I love this from the neck down, clasped hands notwithstanding. The hair is a bit tragic.

      • Jenna Marie

Yes! Why is no one talking bout the Princess Di hair?

        • teensmom99

As someone her age with whiter and whiter hair which I am dying blonder and blonder, I totally get what she’s doing with the hair.

      • formerlyAnon

The hair would work with an edgier dress – something that had an artsy/boho/who cares what anyone else thinks vibe. With this understated dress it reads middle aged professional at a fancy work event.

(Which, is kinda what she is, but that’s not really the red carpet vibe.)

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

      That’s not her hair color.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I think that is what has been bugging me about her in her most recent photos-the hair color. I get that she’s going gray/white and wants to find a shade that work with her complexion, but this isn’t it.

        • jabes

The color doesn’t bother me as much as the super-frumpy cut does.

          • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Maybe it’s the cut that bothers me so much. Something isn’t working. She’s too awesome to be sporting such dowdy hair.

      • http://www.soundsessential.com/ Malice Grant

She was on Jonathan Ross recently and was making “just shoot me now” remarks about being this blonde for something or other, right after she talked about how horrible the perm was for this role, so chalk up another reason for the clasped fingers.

    • mmebam

Oh man, events and conferences manager at a gala…

    • gabbilevy

Yes, it’s too tight, but I highly recommend everyone look at the group photos from this event — the ones with Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson are a riot, they were clearly having a blast. Maybe she just doesn’t enjoy standing along and having 50 people take photos of her just standing still (I wouldn’t!). Take that waist out an inch or two and I think she looks good.

    • AC Simons

I hate those shoes! Why is this “style” a thing? They look awful on everybody. A sleek slingback in black or a metallic would lighten this look up a lot.

    • boweryboy

This dress makes her look like she’s pregnant and beginning to show. The clasped hands over her belly doesn’t help.

    • teensmom99

While it’s not her dress, it is not too far off from the practically perfect clothes she wears in the Saving Mr. Banks trailer. I’ve seen trailer twice and think it’s some of the best costuming I’ve ever seen–she looks exactly like a certain type of woman would have looked in the late 50s early 60s, especially with the short “permed” hair. If only it were not black lace with illusion netting.

    • lunchcoma

Yeah, this is one of those rare situations where being simple and elegant ends up being worse than having a fashion disaster. Emma’s enjoyed her minor fashion disasters for years, and after all this time, this just seems out of place.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

She should have gone up a size, added a sparkly bracelet, and kept the belt. I like her hair & makeup.

    • Tatiana Luján

I think Alice Temperley would be a better fit for her style than Westwood.

      • marlie

And since Westwood is so clearly HBC’s “thing,” and she’s practically Westwood’s muse, it would be weird to put ET in her clothes.

        • fursa_saida

Especially with the whole Branagh thing.

          • marlie

Yeah. That was the main part of my thinking. I know ET said recently in an interview that she’s moved on, and she’s made her peace with HBC, but it’s still a little weird to me. Emma may be over it, but I’m not yet. :P

            • AnneElliot

I agree. I love HBC but I’m still a little mad at her for the Branagh thing. Of course I’m sure Emma is very happy with Greg Wise. . . . sorry, I just swooned a little. :P

            • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I definitely think Emma traded up.

            • Tatiana Luján

I really like each and every person (or their public personalities, at least) involved in those events. It just makes me happy they all seem to have found love and happiness again.

            • Tatiana Luján

I’m not over it either and it makes me feel old to care about something that happened between 2 strangers 20 years ago.

            • Belvane

I still remember Hugh Grant’s hilarious comment about how the press had been camped outside the house he shared with Elizabeth Hurley and then the fooferah happened with Kenny and Emma, and you could hear the reporters’ knuckles dragging on the sidewalk as they turned and hurried down the street toward Emma’s house.

            • Tatiana Luján

poor people, that shouldn’t be part of what they have to put up with.
Imagining the scene told by Hugh Grant is hillarious, though.

    • marlie

Aww, Emma. I do love her so, but she never seems comfortable on the red carpet. Her hair is a little aging, but her makeup looks good.

    • Nika E

Yeah, shes not enjoying that dress at all. She looks good but not happy.

    • In_Stitches

This dress is a complete mess. That shadowy lining is giving her a shadowy fupa and shiny knockers. I don’t think that’s the effect she (or the designer) was going for.

    • Gatto Nero

The uncles are spot on. (Even her stance looks tense.) Miss Emma is so awesomely interesting and strange; she deserves a singular, high-impact, slightly eccentric but glam look. She appeared on Graham Norton recently in a pair of python pants (and said she killed and gutted the snakes herself).

Also the hair is getting paler and paler. A warmer shade might suit her better.

Just totally love her, though .

      • fursa_saida

        Those pants were KILLER.

        • Gatto Nero

Yes. And she totally killed on the show. Funniest I’ve ever seen her.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

She’s on my short list of major lady crushes. She’s brilliant, funny, and can laugh at herself-AND she got the stud from Sense and Sensibilty!

      • http://angrynerdgirl.net/ Jessi03

She looked fantastic on Graham Norton. That was such a fun group of people, too! I loved that episode. Came for the Doctors, stayed for Miss Emma.

    • bellafigura1

Yes, she’s doing the classic My-Spanx-Are-Riding-Up-My-Lady-Parts-While-Simultaneously-Rolling-Down-To-Under-My-Belly maneuver.

On the up side, her hair color is great, although the styling’s a little O.L.D.

      • SRQkitten

I saw another picture of her recently with this color but it looked much better than at this event. My immediate reaction was “wow, she’s doing well with her fifties”

    • Therese Bohn

I love Emma, but the hairdo is terribly aging! Too bubbly?

      • Trickytrisha

Yep. The hair is one degree away from the once a week little old lady bubble do.

      • formerlyAnon

I don’t think the hair is aging, it’s the combination of the hair and the dress. She could wear a less conservative, ‘younger’ style, but if she dressed with more of her usual flair this would look like a perfectly fine style, if chosen because it’s efficient and easy to wear, rather than for glamor, but that’s kind of her vibe. She’s 54, and she’s let her face look like a ‘good’ 54. Possibly she’s not trying to look 37-and-holding.

    • loopy

      Nope. That’s Jennifer Granholm’s hair.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

      Oh no, that’s just terrible.

    • Dancer

She looked pretty amazing on the Graham Norton show a couple weeks back in python patterned pants/leggings. That fulfilled the quirky quotent that she needs

    • Kirstin McAulay

I’m fairly sure that the smile has been surgically implanted, her usual grin is much less ‘get me the hell out of this dress’. She needs a little more colour – who styles Queen Helen?! that’s who the extraordinary Madam T needs!!

    • Jacob Bowen

This kind of gives her a….dare I say it, FUPA.

      • pookiesmom

        Translation, please?

        • Jacob Bowen

          Fat Upper Pu**y Area….ughhhh shudders.

          • bitchybitchybitchy

            Precisely.

    • Lori

The question is, does she really hate the dress or is she mostly uncomfortable because it doesn’t fit and therefore isn’t flattering?

      • SRQkitten

If it doesn’t fit and is tight, it’s probably not a comfortable wear. Emma doesn’t strike me as someone who does the crazy suffering for fashion

    • BrooklynBomber

      Pretty dress.

    • Tracy_Flick

      Insurance company holiday party.

      • DeTrop

Boy you nailed it. Bosses wife. ET is one of the realest people in show biz. Leave her alone.

    • kim bunchalastnames

you’re right (of course): it’s great on her, but she looks like she wants to apologize for it. i don’t think she cares for her hair, much, either.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I love her so much, I am weeping with empathy. This is not how you treat Emma Freaking Thompson.

    • crash1212

I love her so much and so I want her to be comfortable. I love her British quirkiness…let Emma live stylists! Free Emma!

    • jif

And that stylist was unable to find a hair person or a better pair of shoes? Or pick better jewelry?

    • CPK1

Hello Mrs Thatcher! Seriously, what is with that hair? And what have they done with lovely, quirky, Emma?

    • Gatto Nero

May I add that I love this woman for leaving her face alone?
Her smile is ravishing — and natural.

    • throwaneyeonthis

There is no shame in going up a size and having the dress tailored to fit your perfectly.

    • Fred Vaughn

The dress gives too much of a nude thing, and the hair’s too matronly for everything else in the look – but it’s *mostly* a nice changeup

    • e jerry powell

It’s lined, so at least she had some dignity about her.

    • prettybigkitty

She was on the Graham Norton Show a couple weeks ago in tight snakeskin pants. And she rocked the shit out them! Luv her!!!

    • Michelle Wilson

My mother rocked that hair cut 20 years ago. That’s not something Emma should be proud of. I don’t mind the dress because it looks really great on her, but the hair and dress are making two completely different statements.

    • martha

Don’t like that hair cut, but with that color she reminds me of a young Dolly Pardon.

    • E. D.

      Too tight and too blonde.

    • carnush

EMMA! I love you, you brave, brave woman. Smile through the pain like the pro that you are. You are a goddess, but those shoes are tragic.

    • WintryMix

It is the humanity of this assessment that sets the pair of you above all others in the game, TLo.

    • Fatima Siddique

What the H? Where is my Emma???

    • Lola Channing

The dress is lovely and seems to fit just fine. I mean, no bulges I can see. But the hair needs to be saved from Mrs. Thompson’s head.

    • AndreaSkates

GTNYHC[hair color] either. Please, someone put her in something without all that yellow undertone!

    • H2olovngrl

I am thinking the nude lining was not the way to go with her. It is showing every curve and bump she has, and is probably the source of her personal discomfort. (Not that I, personally, thinks she looks bad. I think she looks lovely.)
