Emmy Rossum in Oscar de la Renta at the “August Osage County” Screening

Posted on December 06, 2013

Pretty girl, pretty dress.

Look, it’s Friday and we’re only on our 4th cup. Cut us some slack.

Emmy Rossum attends the “August Osage County” screening benefiting Children Mending Hearts & The Episcopal School of Los Angeles at the Landmark Theater in an Oscar de la Renta dress.

Besides, sometimes that’s all that needs to be said. We can’t really argue with anything here.

Okay, fine. Here’s a critique (although we sound like a broken record a total GIF on this topic lately): silver metallic shoes would’ve made this totally holiday-ready.

The lipstick is applied a bit too widely, I think, but the colour’s lovely. Maybe a napkin wipe would have fixed it?

Can anyone fashion-savvy explain what it is that makes the lipstick work in a case like this?

    • Tatiana Luján

I’m not fashion-savvy, but I think she draught the lip line outside the real and natural lip contour.

      • Nicholas

Oh, no; I meant what it is about lipstick colour that—otherwise—compliments the look so well. 🙂

        • Tatiana Luján

You were perfectly clear and I didn’t read well.
The shade of the lipstick is warm, as well as her complexion and her blush, but not too orange.

  • TrixieConQueso

Too pedestrian for a Movie Star! She should just give it to me and get something with more sparkle!

  • Coleen

Why are stylists so afraid of the non-naked metallic shoe? #teamnevernude

  • Jessica Freeman

Standard pretty. The dress really did need a metallic shoe. Replication of the model is always boring.

    • PastryGoddess

      she even replicated the pose

  • I can’t imagine those shoes ever being the answer.

    • SugarSnap108

When the question is, “What’s on sale at Payless?”

      • sagecreek

And they’ll dye them for free! 🙂

  • filmcricket

If the dark lip and neutral eye is about to make a comeback, I will jump for joy. So much better than the naked lip and conjunctivitis-eye we’ve been seeing lately.

Pretty girl, pretty (if somewhat ill-fitting?) dress, terrible shoes.

    • Mary229

I’ve been wearing the dark lip and neutral eye anyway because I just like it better. But yes, I’d love it if it came back in style. Naked lips just aren’t fun to me.

  • sojourneryouth

Like the dress a lot–sometimes a nice silhouette in a good print is all you need. But besides a shoe change, I don’t like the messy topknot at all. I think something sleeker would have been better for this look.

  • MilaXX

Silver metallic shoes would also have made more sense than these ugly white shoes. Sorry I just cannot get on board with this white shoe trend. Most times is just looks awkward to me.

  • Diego!

White shoes.. in winter? Honey, NO. It ruined everything here.

    • Rhonda Shore

I really am wishing that the no white after labor day rule would be re-introduced…

  • cleva1

I will never not hate white shoes. I’ve tried to not hate them, I really have. They come close to ruining this for me. Looking forward to the end of this trend.

  • Saturnine

She looks so much like a far-away friend of mine that I’m happy to see Emmy whenever she shows up–but I would still send her back upstairs for a shoe change.

  • Hate the white shoes with a burning passion.

  • That’s quite the “Joan Crawford Lipstick Application Technique” she’s got going there!

The shoes are a little clunky looking but what bothers me (if I have to pick out something) is the length. The hem on the model is right at the knee; Miss Emmy’s version is hitting mid-calf, which to my eye is far less flattering. I realize a complete custom tailoring job is probably not possible for a dress that a celeb is going to wear once for a step-and-repeat, but if I were the stylist I would have tried real hard to get this shortened.

  • rissa42210

I’m bored of the white shoe here. But j’adore that teeny bag!

  • MaggieMae

Three cheers for the cocktail ring. Nice!

  • Janet B

That’s a lot of red lipstick, but I don’t mind since her eye makeup is just right and it usually bugs me.

  • conniemd

I would have worn red shoes to match the lipstick.

    • Tatiana Luján

almost any other shoe color would have worked with this outfit.

      • Even some of those bright satin platforms that were around a while ago.

  • I don’t care for the shoes but I’m so happy to see a festive red lip that I’ll get over it.

  • Yep. Pretty girl, pretty dress. We can all move on now.

  • SayWhaaatNow

This is a random question, but does gray go with any skin tone? It seems to be the one color that falls flat on every woman. Reason I ask is because the picture of the model pops when you can see that the background of the dress is blue, but on Emmy it looks black and the overall effect seems slightly dull…

  • Lola Channing

there’s so much going on on the dress and close to the face (cut of the neckline) we would have lost the earrings. Too much. Agree on the shoes. White pointy pumps is so british chav on holidays in Playa de las Americas.

  • NBG

This adorable dress is crying out for silver shoes THAT FIT!

Why can’t a stylist ever just call ahead and find out the actress’ actual shoe size? Why is this so hard?

    Cute earrings.

  • ashtangajunkie

Love the cocktail ring and red lips, but the clutch makes me laugh. What does one keep in a clutch that small – secrets?

    • Garcia Loca

Ha! I didn’t even realized the had one — it disappeared into the dress pattern.

    • That’s a great line!

      • ashtangajunkie

        Thanks. 🙂

    • Tatiana Luján

clutches don’t make any sense to me.

    • marlie

Lipstick and a credit card? That sucker won’t even hold a cell phone.

      • ashtangajunkie

I bet her assistant is carrying around a (heavy) reusable Whole Foods bag or something.

  • Pennymac

In the close-ups the embellishment is really quite pretty. The Payless white shoes have got to go, though..

  • Cousin_Rose

She looks cold. Michelle would have deployed a cardigan and I think a nice silver layer would work here.

  • SugarSnap108

Pretty dress. Anger-inducing shoes. I’m only on cup three.

  • Tatiana Luján

Please, sltylists of Holywood, let the white shoe trend die, and the mid-calf hem die with it.

  • I like the shorter length on the runway better.

  • SewingSiren

    Very cute. All of it.

  • marlie

Hate the white shoes. Yep, silver would have been KILLA. Otherwise, she looks really cute. I like the red lip, and I LOVE that cocktail ring.

  • sagecreek

Love the dress, and it fits her beautifully!

Hate the white shoes, but even I am tired of hearing myself say that.

    • marlie

I hate hearing myself say “stop with the nude lipstick,” so I feel ya.

  • BrooklynBomber

    Totally agree.

Only thing is it seems we’re seeing lots of examples lately of dresses shown knee length (on models) that end up mid-calf length on non-models. This is one of the rare ones that works. But most of the time it seems they need to be shortened, or cut differently in the first place.

  • AmeliaEve

Is the model wearing a crinoline? I like how the skirt pops a little more on her.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

It looks like the back of the dress is plain which always bugs me. Cute from the front though.

  • stubbornthoughts

BROW ENVY. She’s so goddamn pretty.

  • Violentcello

Look at that tiny little clutch! It’s like a doll clutch! I love it. Although I wonder what she has in there. Toothpicks and half a stick of gum?

  • mickiemonkey

The backdrop and the shoes are really unfortunate because she really looks stunning.

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

What a perfect example of a classic silhouette made interesting with good fabric and embellishment choices! Gorgeous!

  • a_liking

can I just profess my huge crush on Emmy for a moment? god, what a beautiful woman.

  • JauntyJohn

Is there — or is this a business opportunity of some sort — some kind of service which informs celbs & and stylists about the color palate of the backdrops for these things? Asked-and-answered, clearly not. Of course you dress to look great at the event, but it’s these pics everyone sees… great dress, I like it on her, but a bit lost against the black behind her. No one’s fault, just a thing.

  • Tracy_Flick

Beautiful dress, gorgeous make-up. Needle scratch on the shoes – they look stiff and poorly fitting, like Barbie shoes.

  • lifeisastory

I cannot support this. It looks like somebody was spray painting their wicker patio furniture and didn’t realize she was standing behind it, wearing a black dress.

  • housefulofboys

What a pretty lipstick color! And I might have suggested a thin belt for the dress. And, of course, lighter fluid and matches for the shoes.

    • willworktomorrow

I think she’s wearing a belt, but it’s black. A white or silver or even red thin belt would have popped here.

  • Trickytrisha

I know – let’s all send TLo metallic shoes for Christmas!

  • rh33

White shoes just make your feet look big. I’ll take a nude pump over white any day.

  • Lori

White pumps are almost never the right answer to, “Which shoes should I wear with this?” I’m not sure why stylists seem to have forgotten that.

  • Trickytrisha

I’m wondering kind of collective brain fart causes stylists to choose ill-fitting/ugly/inappropriate shoes for their clients. It seems to be the most consistently poor element of the outfits we see on this website. I’m assuming most shoes are “borrowed”, like the clothing is, rather than owned by the person wearing them.

  • The length is ever so slightly matronly, but given the event totally understandable. The sooner the white shoe thing is over the better, though.

  • quiltrx

    Love this dress, love her!

  • Aurumgirl

The white shoe makes this dress look like a housewife’s apron from the 50’s.

    • Monabel

      Whoa, harsh.

      • Aurumgirl

Maybe so, but visually they take a multi-thousand dollar dress down to the bargain bin level. The pigeon toed stance doesn’t help either, but I understand she was probably moving between poses for the photographer.

  • the skirt should be two inches shorter and more full. the lips are too exaggerated, and the shoes are a bore. a too big bore. emmy, i love you, but you’ve looked better.

  • All_Hail_Great_Satin

For some reason I always think Emmy Rossum looks better in minimal makeup on Shameless. She just really rocks undereye circles. No joke.
