Cate Blanchett for Vogue Magazine

Posted on December 17, 2013

And thus did Santa Jesus come down from the sky astride a unicorn and say to Tom and Lorenzo, “Here is your Christmas gift, boys. Four words: Cate Blanchett for Vogue. BAM. How about that? Truth be told, it wasn’t hard to set up. Anyway, gotta go; off to make other people deliriously happy! Ho! Ho! Ho! Bless you.”

And then did he ride back into the sky, leaving Tom and Lorenzo to their happytears.

“Blue Jasmine” and “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” star Cate Blanchett covers the January 2014 issue of Vogue magazine photographed by Craig McDean and styled by Tonne Goodman.

Too bad her skin is falling off in that 2nd picture…
Otherwise she looks great in these!

    • TAGinMO

It does read a little “I’M MELTING!”

      • foodycatAlicia

I read the whole posture as “I’M COMING”, actually…

        • conniemd

Oh God. I had the same reaction to the placement of her hand on the dress.

    • leahpapa

Look, we all have to molt sometimes.

  • MW

The cover shot is absolutely stunning! Glad they didn’t feature the skirt. Hate the second look, love the third one.

    • judybrowni

Yup, our Cate did a better job with the hiddy sweater than the morose elf model.

And she’s gorge in that last dress.

  • Sarah

She is transcendentally gorgeous, as always. I am amazed, however, to discover that in addition to her other talents, she can dispense gold jewelry from her mouth. Seems fitting, somehow…

    • gabbilevy

Sort of like “pearls of wisdom.” But gold. And Blanchett.

    • kimmeister

I think she eats it, actually, and that’s what gives her that supernatural glow.

      • Sarah

The glow is from her internal gold-smelting furnace, silly! She’s a dispenser of high-quality jewelries in her spare time 😉

        • kimmeister

Silly me, I can’t believe I missed that connection.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I have been reading your posts. Now I have a crush on them. That “dispense gold jewelry from her mouth” made me spit my iced tea onto my computer monitor.

      • Sarah

I live for to amuse, my friend. 😉

  • bitchybitchybitchy

    Thank you, Santa Jesus!

  • Lesley

the cover shot is stunning but then the rest kinda borders boring, no?

  • alyce1213

I just wish they hadn’t over-contoured her face on the cover. She doesn’t need it, and it makes her face look a little … idk, dirty?
She and the clothes are gorgeous — better on her than the models. (The model’s eyebrows in the first dress are nightmare-inducing.)

    • tereliz

LOL, The Cut (I think) has it in GIF form. The amount of “work” done on JLaw in those pics is NOTHING compared to some other shots I’ve seen. I really liked her original (read: real) face in that photo, but I guess it just wasn’t sultry and sharp enough to go with the sexy outfit.

    • LondonMarriott

I agree, but I can’t help but wonder how much photoshopping was done when the hair over her right ear (our left) is all sticky-outy. Why the face and not the hair?

      • alyce1213

I don’t know why they didn’t do her hair wisps, but the photoshopping — contouring — on her face is more than obvious.

  • MilaXX

She really breathes life into those clothes. I don’t like any of the looks on the models, but in the photos they completely work. Thankfully the cover shot only shows the cute part of that dress.

    • Imasewsure

Agreed. That first outfit in particular had such an ugly skirt but the top was interesting. Loved the other two gold frocks on our girl too but neither on the models (esp. the last one which looked like 100 pounds of gold frump on the model).

      • Jackie4g

Yes, lose the overskirt on that cover dress and it would be quite all right.

  • Tatiana Luján

The jewelery biting seems silly. And the second gown is ugly.
Her face looks hypnotically gorgeous and sharp in all the pictures.

  • nannypoo

She looks gorgeous, of course. The posing is a little contrived, especially the shot where she tragically fell down in her living room and all her jewelry fell off. I love the colors and design in the second look.

    • Jackie4g

I think she was lolling and choosing jewelry. Mere mortals never really get to do that. Lolling, I mean.

  • mommyca

I’m off to buy the magazine… Thank you Santa and Jesus!

  • Allie Carter

Why is she eating a watch?! Oh who the hell cares, it’s Cate Blanchett

    • Shawn EH

It’s her gold, she’ll count it on the floor whenevs!

    • verucaamish

Clearly she’s doing method acting and she’s Smaug.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Hmmm.If Peter Jackson had really wanted to send the LOTR/Hobbit community into a frenzy, then he would have had Cate voice Smaug….

  • stellamaris73

Fabulous! And not an ounce of Dior anywhere! Huzzah!

  • ballerinawithagun

She is stunning, of course! Thank you! Happy Holidays!
I wish the Celine were a complete dress instead of that horrible combination on the model. Now that I look closer, maybe it is a dress underneath that sheer skirt. I guess they felt that they had to jump on the sheer bandwagon. Too bad.
The second dress looks good because of her.
I love the third look! Very Thomas Crowne Affair.

  • Imasewsure

I absolutely LURVE the golden Cate nibbling on her golden jewels!! Great spread as usual – Tres Deneuve

  • International Model

That cover should be used as a motivational poster to encourage everyone to have more confidence.

  • mjmiller

she looks great in all the shots, but what’s up with the open mouth? yuck.

  • Bexxx

  • Jumpingjacks

I would’ve preferred more colour in the clothing.. the cover promised me things that weren’t delivered on the inside.

  • hmariec19

    God bless us, everyone.

  • aglorios

I’m so tired of seeing these poses. Cate deserves something edgier.

  • LeelaST

Gorgeous! The gown photo is a mini-movie.

  • Cadence Woodland

    I believe!

  • NMMagpie

    Simply spectacular.

  • Diego!

Thank you Santa!!! And thank you Anne Wintour too! 😛

  • HM3

Close your mouth. Close your mouth! Close your MOUTH! I’ll accept it in one picture, but all three is really a little bit stupid-looking….as if she’s burping just as the camera went off. Can’t stand this open-mouthed trend. It doesn’t work well with every facial expression.

    • Clueless_Jock

Probably the photographer’s choice of open mouthed shots, not hers. I can’t imagine that she had her mouth open throughout the photo shoot.

  • Aidan B

Blessed be, o heavenly elvish one.

  • tereliz

The shot of her in the Dolce is EVERYTHING! *sigh*

  • KT

    Straight out of Santa’s WERQshop!

  • EEKstl

    …and may I say: Amen.

  • Danielle

  • kimmeister

I like the way they styled her hair.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

Love that shot where she’s reclining on the floor with all the gold jewelry. That is so sultry.

    • rh33

      Sharon Stone in “Casino”.

  • crash1212

    Amen, indeed.

  • Kent Roby

That second shot looks like a really-glam ad for Vagisil Anti-Itch Medicated Wipes. I love the “painted” bodice on the cover.

  • SugarSnap108

That cover shot is gorgeous, but the others are just odd. The second one comes *just* a tad too close to a private moment. Still, I think she’s one of the few lady stars who can make those poses even remotely work.

  • mjude

bowing the fuck down because I do believe in santa.

  • jjtxgrrl

    Shes so BEYOND.

  • H2olovngrl

Oh, I.lovelovelove the photo with the golden Dolce&Gabbana. First thing that ever made me wish I was a blond…sigh…

  • ashtangajunkie

That FACE. Such is the power of Blanchett that I didn’t even get distracted by Idris Elba’s name on the cover.

  • Melanie

  • GeoDiva

Better than the runway models. Way to go Cate!

  • imakeart

She looks marvelous, and the clothes are fab, but the puddle of gold jewelry is the stuff of my dreams. Or I’m in a bathtub full of Tahitian pearls.

  • e jerry powell

One of the more tolerable looks from the D&G collection, of course.

  • KinoEye

I wonder how that bracelet tastes.

  • marlie

I LURVE Cate in the Dolce & Gabbaba. Her face seems a little lacking in personality in the other two pictures, BUT there’s no denying that she looks gorgeous. And, “just ok” pictures of St. Cate are still a million times better than most other ladystars’ best photos.

  • Random Compliments

NEED the bracelet from the cover.

  • formerlyAnon

Oh god. These photos just scream for a movie or Extremely High Budget night time soap opera featuring well-dressed women past their first youth wielding power, indulging vices, and possibly even smoking cigarettes.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

She is giving HANDS like nobody’s business. Seriously, look back on her history, and see how she takes the celebutorial up several notches with just her hands.

She needs to play a seriously wronged, EXTREMELY angry deaf drag queen in a movie.

  • CeeQ

Now THIS is a Come To Jesus moment. Bless.

  • Fionn and Sugar

    No. No. No.
Eyes on cover are too photoshopped.
2nd shot looks like she has to go potty.
3rd shot looks likes mental illness and makes me uncomfortable.

    • Sabin

Yeah, I was just thinking how I hate that she looks like a cgi character in #1, looks like she’s right in the spot between nauseated and about to vomit in #2, and like she’s trying to gag herself in #3. Jewelry-induced bulimia…not my fave.

      • demidaemon

Well, I disagree with you both. She is fabulous in every photo!

  • capybara_cafe

She put every single one of those models to shame. FLAWLESS.

  • PeaceBang

Miss Blanchett all done up as Hanukah gelt. I shriek with delight! But the real revelation here is the runway model with the face painted up like a beagle. I’mma totally try that at home.

  • Sunraya

I don’t like the Armani on her at all. So boring. It is too matchy to her hair and skin.

    • quiltrx

It’s funny, that’s exactly what I DO like about it! if she were living, breathing, walking an RC, I would totally be with you. But in photo shoot form…she’s like this honey-colored goddess from head to toe. I dig it.

  • demidaemon

Praise be to Jesus and Tilda!

  • ThaliaMenninger

The Dolce and Gabbana SINGS on her.

  • French_Swede

I don’t really like the flesh-colored dresses on her. I’d like to see her in a regal purple or gray/blue to match her eyes. The clothes are lovely, and she is lovely, but I’d like to see more POPS of color.

  • somebody blonde

She’s giving a kind of strange face in the second one. Otherwise, she looks amazing.

  • Gatto Nero

There appears to be weird Photoshop contouring on her face in the cover shot (or beige makeup), especially around the eyes — but her face is so beautifully sculpted already, this looks overdone.
Love the monochrome effect of the second shot (Armani Prive) and the gold and cream loveliness of the third (D&G).
    She is a goddess.

  • Frank

The cover shot has a bit of a Rachel Menken feel to it..

  • NOLA_gal

  • lesmaha

    So happy right now–beautiful….

  • Ass Kicking Adviser

I have to say that I just don’t understand why the backdrop is that drab color. It looks like they took the cover shot in the hallway. But of course, she makes it work. Because she is Cate.

  • Frank Lithium

    Cate Blanchett is everything.
