Blake Lively in Marchesa at the Van Cleef & Arpels Event

Posted on December 11, 2013

Well look who got it right for once.

Blake Lively attends the unveiling of Van Cleef & Arpels redesigned New York 5th Avenue Flagship Maison at Van Cleef & Arpels in New York City in a Marchesa dress accessorized with Gucci sandals and Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry.

Marchesa Spring 2014 Collection

The hair and makeup look DIY and the shoes are kind of bland, but that dress really works for her and she didn’t do anything to screw it up. That’s a win, as far as we’re concerned. Maybe not a personal best or anything, and certainly not a difficult look to pull together and wear, but she looks good and there’s only so much bitchery we can work up.

Gorgeous dress… but is it still summer over there? OMG this girls aren’t afraid of catching a cold! LOL. She looks great!

    • Nicole C

I went out in SF last weekend when it was around 35 degrees, and I saw teenage girls headed to a concert in ONLY booty shorts and crop tops. Hello?!?!????

Blake Lively, you’re a role model – wear a coat, lol.

      • mlle

I don’t mind that she’s sleeveless – all these photos are clearly indoors, and New York deals with cold by aggressively overheating all its interiors.

        • marlie

My office here in Philly is *sweltering.*

          • Jecca2244

i am literally sleeveless most days at work. and i layer because the temp in our office fluctuates so much. so i can’t hate on the sleeveless dresses.

      • BrooklynBomber

I was also in the Bay Area over the weekend and saw a girl outside in a tank top. Everyone else was wearing their warmest coats. She had to have been suffering or crazy.

      • luluransom

I was out in SF too. Apparently if you’re under 30, you’re allowed to wear nothing heavier than a sweatshirt with your booty shorts. V. glad to be older and wiser–and wearing gloves and a winter coat.

      • ACHATtychica

The big concert in SF last weekend at the Civic Center (Macklemore & Ryan Lewis) likely explains some of the not-so-weather-appropriate looks. It was sold out general admission, which means sweaty bodies packed closely together like sardines. I was wearing faux leather sweatpants (yes, I went there!), a loose white tank, plaid button down tied around the waist, wedges, and a warm jacket (and I was comfortable both inside the auditorium and out!)…but 75% of people were dressed like you described.

        • Nicole C

I was actually there too, so I wore a leopard print COAT. Over a t-shirt and jeans. I kept thinking that he was wearing a coat in the video, so how aren’t more people wearing them??

And, yes, you can wear the shorts and whatever inside, but I kept thinking – Don’t these kids have some kind of jacket for when they leave? Alas, I am too old to understand their culture anymore. At 30. (I’m a high school teacher though, so I already knew this a while ago.)

ps: Other sad fact of life – none of my students who went to the concert knew who Talib Kweli was. ::sigh::

          • ACHATtychica

Wasn’t it a great show?! I was very impressed. LOVE that you wore a leopard print coat, over a t-shirt and jeans (appropriate for Macklemore AND SF weather), and I agree, there was a significant lack of jackets. I mean come on, it was only $3 for coat check.
Perhaps I am too old to understand tweens and teens anymore as well, at 24.
Clearly, I agree with all of your points, but I am throwing my arms in the air, shouting “HALLELUJAH” at your sadness that nobody seems to know Talib Kweli these days. SUCH A SHAME! The man is absolutely brilliant.
My man-friend (at 26 years old, it feels a little strange for me to call him “boyfriend”…but perhaps that’s just me *shrugs*) and I were JUST complaining about this post concert. Wahhhh.

          • Nicole C

Ha, my husband used to call me his SO (significant other). I like man friend better than that!

And yes – Macklemore was great!!! Super super fun, and I loved what he had to say, especially considering there were a lot of kids there. +Talib +E-40 +all Macklemore’s guest artists from tracks… we got to have the cool fb status of the weekend (ha), and I think my legs are still sore from dancing so much 😀 Next time I’m at a hip-hop show, us “old-folks” should congregate together by the bar 😉

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

She’s perfect for Marchesa. She should get a contract from them and use that money to finally hire a stylist.

  • sugarkane105

I’d trade my first born for that set of jewelry.

  • Sobaika

I understand this is a Van Cleef event, but that earring is ludicrous.

And she looks very pretty. Trendy girl’s take on retro, it’s her shtick.

    • BrooklynBomber

I know, crazy earrings, right? They should work with that dress, but somehow they don’t.

      • Introspective

agree that the earrings totally fight against the dress. but this look is still easier on the eyes than many of her past appearances. so atta girl?

        • 3boysful

Agree with all ya’ll, but I just want to be invited to a Van Cleef event.

    • Jacob Bowen

All I can see is EARRING!

  • In my fantasy life, that is the nightgown I wear to entertain my lovers. Not out of the house. Good earrings though.

    • Right? Them’s undapants.

    • BrooklynBomber

I like your use of the plural.

      • I have monogamy in real life!

        • BrooklynBomber

          I understood! 🙂

        • Nancer

          That’s why it’s a fantasy life… :]

    • kmk05

Ha, I just posted something to that effect! You’d need a boudoir, though.

      • Oh yes. The walls are panelled in red velvet.

        • kmk05

I’d go for the really heavy velvet embroidered tapestries. With one of those fancy stools covered in velvet too. And a mirror, which might look similar to the display behind her in the first photo. And everything smells of oud.

          • THAT IS SO AMAZING – I only found out what oud was last week!

    • KateShouldBeWorking

You’re gonna do those slide-on heels with the marabou poof, right?

  • Tatiana Luján

that lace looks horrible outside the red carpet.
I like the hair and makeup more than the dress.

  • Kent Roby

She looks very pretty here. I, too, love the dress (even though it borders on “wedding-night lingerie”), and I love her hair, would just love to see her eyes played up more with the makeup.

  • bellafigura1

Ick, the earrings. Everything else is expected, not offensive.

  • thecitysleeps

Ugh, I hate these Marchesa dresses that are basically more embellished night gowns. Having said that, she’s pretty and has a great bod so of course she looks good. I like the shoes, hate the hair and jewellery.

  • Looks like extremely expensive custom lingerie to me.

  • Agador Spartacus

She is on my irrational hate list and is the very definition of beige to me. I may not very objective in my thoughts because of that but this just doesn’t look like her dress. I think she needs something more simple and less lace and embroidered florals.

    • PastryGoddess

      In other words…NOT Marchesa

    • marlie

She bugs me too. I’d be happy if she just went home. 😛

    • NinaBoo

Cibrian, Rhimes, and Lively in one day? Momma’s gonna need herself a nerve pill.

Just kidding…Kristin and Dakota are making my Wednesday.

    • Ragnarockette

I agree. While I think she looks gorgeous here, I always thought a sunny, California style would suit her much better.

  • Richard Banger

I feel like there should be a lot more hostility expressed towards those GODAWFUL shoes.

  • MilaXX

Other than the fact that the dress looks like a nightgown, I have no complaints.

  • rebeemoon

    Those earrings!

  • rage_on_the_page

If that hair is ‘DIY’ then I should just give up.

    • pattyw

I was just going to same the same thing about her makeup. She can do mine anytime.

  • Anna_Cecilia

Hair and makeup look dull, she’s missing that glowy, beachy look that she at least has going for her, even when her personal styling of herself usually fails.

But if anyone has the body to make lingerie as outerwear work, it’s her. I wore similar shoes to my prom in 1998, I think they were from Aldo.

  • GillianHolroyd

I think her hair looks very healthy here.

  • mlle

Her eye makeup underwhelms but that’s a gorgeous holiday lip colour.

  • Andrea Lentz

I actually really like this dress but I think this whole look is typical Blake.

  • Anne Elliot

    Marchesa always looks so tacky

    • BrooklynBomber

Welcome to the Die, Marchesa, Die! Society. Your membership card is in the mail.

      • Which means The, Marchesa, The! in German #everythingIknowIlearnedfromtheSimpsons

        • BrooklynBomber

          Haha, ja!

    • Ragnarockette

I feel like everything always looks so frou frou. However when they get it right (which does happen, occasionally) my jaw drops to the floor.

  • BrooklynBomber

Ooh, I don’t like that dress. And I swear to God, that was my immediate reaction – before I saw it’s Marchesa. I must have an allergy.

  • marlie

Blake looks like she’s wearing a nightie. I can’t get behind this one. Though I actually think that this time her hair and makeup look good. The shoes are… fine.

Also, I hate her pigeon-toed pose. Hate.

  • BayTampaBay

    What is “DIY”?

    • BrooklynBomber

      do it yourself

    • marlie

“Do it yourself.” Fine for us mere mortals, but not when you’re a celeb being paid tens of thousands of dollars to appear at an event, and the expectation is that you’ll hire professional stylists to prep you.

    • tallgirl1204

  • bitchybitchybitchy

This dress must be from the same collection from which Heidi chose her most recent hoochy look. I give Blake the win here-she’s wearing this one better than Heidi wore hers.

  • Lilithcat

When I saw the thumbnail, I thought she was wearing a nightgown!

The shoes seem a tad clunky for the dress.

  • kimmeister

I feel like the straps are about 3″ too long, both on her and on the model. I get that it’s cut low to show decolletage, but it just makes the girls seem droopy.

    • Sarah

Agreed. I wanted to think the (mostly) referred to was her wearing it way too low, then I saw the model shot and realized it isn’t BL’s fault, its just made that way. Could’ve built up the bodice higher, left it low cut, and kept the look, if you ask me.

  • Monica

I know it’s Marchesa and all, but the first thing that popped in my head was that episode of ‘friends’ when Rachel went to dinner with her boyfriend and his parents in her nightie.

  • melanie0866

Looks like a slip, but she’s come a long way from her days of being Boobs Legsly

  • Tracy_Flick

You don’t like the hair and makeup? I think a more polished and classic look in styling is the only thing saving this shredded nighty from looking like Courtney Love at 3am.

  • TamraLS

Bring in Scott Hastings and she’d be ready to dance some non-federation steps in the Pan-Pacific Grand Prix!

    • jw_ny

thumbs up for the reference to one of my favorite quirky movies…although I don’t quite see it here in Blake. She’d need a few more pounds of makeup and more outrageous hair, and more feathers and sparkles! XD

      • TamraLS

Yeah, she looks more like a flamenco dancer (put a rose in her hair & some castanets in her hands) than a Latin ballroom dancer. I just wanted to use the Strictly Ballroom reference. See if there were any fans. 😉

        • jw_ny

Absolutely! It’s nice to know I’m not alone. 🙂

…and she can keep those earrings on, they’d fit right in.

    • The buff puff is doing wonders for her complexion.

  • Fraggle

Don’t really like the dress, too nightgownish. And the rest… is it just me or does she look older than her years?

  • Imasewsure

I’m not a fan but this dress looks good on her. Makeup is way off though and I actually dislike the earrings more than anything else in this look. I’m done with the Veronica Lake hair too but it’s not awful here… no love.. no hate

  • SportifLateBoomer

I thought lingerie + limp can-can costume. Looking severely underdressed to me.

  • titaness25

Uhm. The dress looks like my dear Grandmumma’s lacy slip she used to wear under her actual dresses.

  • Knightley

It’s almost an exact copy of the runway look minus the hair ribbons and shoes, but it’s a pretty look. Earrings are a bit big, but considering the venue, she probably had little choice in those.

  • KinoEye

She’s just lukewarm water to me, no matter what she wears. She looks so vacant. Some ladystars have the problem of making clothing look cheap when they put it on. For me, she makes everything look stupendously boring. Including this… nightgown that got torn up during the spin cycle. Next, please.

ETA: Didn’t think about it til just now, but “Lively” is the least suitable last name for this woman that I can think of.

  • kmk05

I’ll work up the bitchery for you. This is too much night gown and tired lip colour, waiting for your husband/lover in your boudoir. Not that I don’t like looks like that, just that she can’t really pull it off without looking contrived. She essentially looks like she’s missing clothes and she knows it.

  • tereliz

Needs a jacket. Even the hair and earrings don’t make it feel “done” enough.

Also, I’m getting kind of squicked out thinking of all these ladystars going commando in loaner dresses.

  • Nope. Irrational hate list.

  • Fatima Siddique

If she had left the bracelet off it would have been perfect.

  • decormaven

Myabe lose the bracelet and put a jeweled pin in the hair- the hair needs some styling.

  • ashtangajunkie

My reaction to her is consistently, instantly negative. This time is no different, but I like her earrings and lip colour.

  • Milos Mom

I don’t care for this dress. The neckline and the way the straps frame the shoulders is not flattering. It looks like she is wearing her grandmothers slip and she is waiting for the real dress to go over it.

  • nannypoo

I’ve comeback to look at this several times and I guess I just don’t like it. She looks old and haggard, I hate her hair and the jewelry is gaudy, the dress looks like a nightgown for Blanche DuBois, and the shoes are ugly.

    • demidaemon

      Blanche has better taste.

  • traceyishere

Why is she famous? Is like a Kardashian?

  • pookiesmom

That dress looks SO MUCH like a nightgown. Also, out of the corner of my eye, I thought that she was standing in front of a urinal in the first pic and am more than a little disappointed that she’s not.

  • aquamarine17

a lovely dress. i have had 2 great silk slips that made for great dresses. she can always wear a coat outside. it is probably warm indoors everywhere like it is in NYC

  • aquamarine17

i don’t like the shoes at all with the dress, nor the earrings

  • formerlyAnon

I like that dress, I’d love it if the sheer portions and the lacy edging on the straps and bodice didn’t make it look more like sexy lingerie to me than a gorgeous dress. Which is down to my out-of-date outlook, I know.
ETA: I bet she turned heads, though, and I don’t often think that about her.

  • demidaemon

Umm, it’s a nope for me. The boob fur kills it, and she just looks so underdone. Also, that length is not right. Sorry, but Mrs. Bland McBlanderson still has no fashion chops.

  • LeelaST

Hate the slip…I mean dress. Hate. When did she start looking like that and not like Blake Lively?

  • ThesisMonkey

    This is straight-up negligee.

  • mdcoon127

It hangs too low in the bodice.

  • MannahattaMamma

Does the black mean that it’s okay for December in New York? Because baby it’s cold out there & here is missy blanderson all in a slipdress & sandals.
