Zoe Saldana in Roland Mouret at the 2013 American Music Awards

Posted on November 26, 2013

We wanted to like this look, but after staring at it for way too long, we think that desire has more to do with a sense of good will surrounding the names of Zoe Saldana and Roland Mouret. In other words, we just expect a post with those two names in the title to give us something fierce and sharp.

Zoe Saldana attends the 2013 American Music Awards held at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles, California in a Roland Mouret dress paired with Jimmy Choo heels and Loree Rodkin jewelry.

But we’re not feeling this one at all. She looks good enough, but we can’t say how much we dislike those random panels on the dress. They’re distracting enough, but the fact that one of them is a satiny pale blue is making our eyelids twitch. But when we mentally remove them from the dress, it gets a little boring. She’s working it as best she can, though. We like the hand jewelry, although it looks a little crafty. The makeup is pretty bad. Her upper cheeks and the bridge of her nose are a light pink, for some reason.

I look at the Frankendress and want to deconstruct it: remove the blue satin, the black shoulder piece. Then I realize I’m left with a doily.

      • Nancer

I thought that the Frankendresses were put to death – alas, this is not the case.

        • StellaZafella

As long as there are self-centered designers and bad drugs there will be Frankendresses.

          • bitchybitchybitchy

            Indeed.

      • Deb Oswald

ding ding ding! You got it SO right

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Yeah, I could talk myself into liking this more than I should, but my instant reaction is one of dislike. I appreciate the thought that went into making something pretty and feminine with a little edginess to it, that is a Zoe dress, if you know what I mean, but there’s a cheapness to it that is limiting the potential.

      • zenobar

That exposed brass zipper ain’t helping. This dress has “The Kresge* Touch” – it looks cute as you approach it on its rack, but the closer you get, the more cheap frippery reveals itself.

*For those who didn’t grow up near a Kresge store, they were the forerunner of Kmart – kind of a proto-Target with stock that hadn’t been updated since 1974. Their lunch counters were the bomb, though.

        • conniemd

Ha! Didn’t know people remembered S.S. Kresge stores . I dated a grandson in the 70’s and he got quarterly stock bonuses worth thousands. Not sure how I let him slip through my fingers :(

    • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

A no to that dress and a HELL NO to that 5th grade art project cross ring-bracelet.

Meanwhile, am I the only one who doesn’t get the Zoe Saldana style hype?

      • 3boysful

Well, now, Vivi, the art project bracelet goes with the Advanced Home Ec prom dress, no? ;)

      • filmcricket

I don’t get it either. Although actually her head looks about the best that it ever has, to me – I think I like the pin-straight hair on her. I *wish* she’d occasionally wear a lip colour, though. I think that would go a long way to getting me on-side (which of course she spends sleepless nights worrying about). But yeah, in general, I am not drinking her particular Kool-Aid.

      • decormaven

The ring/bracelet is too craftstastic for words. Looks like something a kid crafted for history class at the last minute.

        • 3boysful

I get a game of Thrones vibe.

        • ana170

That’s some amazing kid to do bead and wire work like that. It’s extremely well done if not the most attractive piece in the world.

        • lifeisastory

The whole dress is craftastic. Looks like maybe the dog chewed it up and she had to patch it with a glue gun, a pillowcase, and part of an old pleather bag.

      • Catiline

I was totally on board with the Zoe Saldana style hype around the time of the first Star Trek movie. Back then she pulled off some really cool, PhD-level outfits. Lately though, for whatever reason, she has just not been bringing it.

      • Leo Incredible

I think she’s very hit or miss on the style front. But I also appreciate that she takes risks, and doesn’t just rest on pretty.

    • hellkell

She does not look like she wants to be there at all.

      • NMMagpie

That’s what I was thinking, too. She looks tired and irritated.

    • Scimommy

      THAT’s Roland Mouret?! I don’t believe it.

    • d4divine

I agree on all points TLo…that blue panel…yikes

    • Mary Lauer

I can kind of get the ice blue satin, but Great-Grandma’s 1890s lace tablecloth is a bridge too far … I wonder why it is flipped 180 fro mteh runway version? Unless the pic of the runway version is flipped …

    • zenobar

I want to rub a tiny dot of non-greasy lotion into my hands and oh, so gently smooth down her flyaways.

(My entire head is one big flyaway, so my heart goes out to her.)

    • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

Yeah, it’s just not that hot a dress.

    • MilaXX

I think the makeup is another HD incident. It looks like a pale pinky gold highlighter was used and it’s showing up unblended in photographs, Despite it’s many elements, the dress comes off as standard. I though her look was okay but nothing stellar.

    • StellaZafella

There’s got to be an ointment for that dress.

    • Mona_Visa

Definitely has a Project Runway challenge vibe. “Take these scraps from the trash…”

    • Judy_S

I was trying to figure out why it looks more interesting on the model, and I think it’s that the model is 8 feet tall and they cut the dress down for Zoe. So a dress that is 100% about the proportions among patches of black and blue loses its proportions.

    • Sarah

That dress is U-G-L-Y. She ain’t got no alibi.

    • CPK1

I personally cannot with the hand jewelry. And the no lipstick look looks good on no one. Goes without saying dress looks like fanciest bed sheet at the toga party

    • Claudia Fernandes

the incoherent mix of fabrics reminds me last Dior collection

    • Danielle

      Loooove the scalloped neckline.

    • Nika E

Her make up is busted. She would have been better with no make up at all.

    • Jessica Freeman

If they panels added something to the look, fine. Here, they ruin it. The last shot where you can’t see it, you can see what a nice dress it could have been.

    • Adrianna Grężak

This is a bit dowdy. The runway version looks more chic b/c of the ruching (which I normally hate)

    • SewingSiren

Looks like someone tried to update two old gowns ……….and failed.

    • Shell

The dress looks so much better in the last pic when the blue patch is hidden! I’m digging the neckline.

I think Zoe fell victim to the “kardashian” style of highlighting – applying a powder 2-3 shades lighter than her skintone in a triangle under the eyes and on the nose. It’s supposed to brighten the face, but it usually just looks like they went tanning wearing huge sunglasses.

    • Introspective

this is fug no matter who wears it. model looks just as hiddy

zoe didnt stand a chance, despite the phd level in clothes wearing she’s attained.

    • merciblahblah

NO NO NO. I typically love what she wears, but this one? Hell to the nah. Completely agree with the baby blue satin – what is the POINT? And that bracelet looks like an etsy special. The shoes belong with a suit in the board room. Just NO.

    • KinoEye

Another dress that doesn’t know what it wants to be when it grows up. She’s beautiful, though. That’s the nicest thing I can say about my favorite celebrity Zoe.

    • Kent Roby

This dress looks like an early home-ec experiment gone wrong.

    • cmb92191

Was this a Project Runway “Pretty in Pink” challenge? Imagine this (in our best Tim voice) Ok, designers be like Andie- take two totally different dresses, make them into one prom style dress.. while still being able to date Blane…”

    • Miss WKS

Just quite possibly one of the ugliest dresses that met needle and thread….

    • YoungSally

sometimes color blocking looks good — sometimes it looks like an inadvertent maternity panel.

    • ashtangajunkie

Oh, how I hate this ugly dress. If Zoe Saldana can’t make it look good, it’s a lost cause.

    • bertkeeter

One day I hope to see her wear something classically glamourus and stunning! Leave all the trendy crap alone.

    • barbarienne

It’s like she put on two different nightgowns and then had insomnia and twisted herself all up in bed. I want her to shake everything back into place.

    • GorgeousThings

The whole thing looks like a student effort. And a mediocre student effort at that. Given how much I adore RM, that comes as a shock to me.

    • pookiesmom

This dress is absolutely terrible on her and the model.

    • ubreyn12

It looks like a prom dress created by someone who learned to sew 2 hrs before the event. She grabbed whatever was near (looks like a cheap belt, blue pillow case, grandma’s doilies, and a black sharpie). Then she remembered that she saved the beads from a necklace she made at summer camp 10 years ago. So she grabbed the glue gun, made the glove, and it magically brought the entire outfit together.

    • paginatrix

A beautiful girl like that shouldn’t be wearing an 8th grader’s craft project.

    • Targettaste

I’m fascinated that Zoe’s dress is a mirror image of the runway dress. What was the thought process? Oooh, that dress is ugly, but if I put all the wonky details on the opposite side it will work? No.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

The dress I could handle if her makeup didn’t make her look like she’s getting over double pneumonia. Love the wrist bling.

    • kimmeister

Her right shoulder looks like it has been censored.

    • conniemd

I think the problem with this is the material. It’s too busy for a floor length gown. It would be much cuter styled as a short flirty almost twee dress.

    • nannypoo

That is just a butt-ugly dress, no getting around it. Her makeup is bad, too. She looks unwell.

    • tereliz

Roland Mouret for Bed Bath & Beyond.

    • Snailstsichr

I like her eyes – but nothing below them.

My mother firmly believes that one just does not leave the house without lipstick. I’m thinking I should send her to visit these naked-lip-ladystars. Five minutes with her and they would run to the Revlon counter and scoop up Fire and Ice like there was no tomorrow.

    • boweryboy

Sometimes I have to skip to the next post because my feelings are hurt by poor fashion choices.

    • Darcy H

That dress literally has zero redeeming qualities.

    • Anplica Fiore

Frankendress, party of 1, your table is ready…

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

How come the model’s dress angles up toward her left shoulder, and Zoe’s goes to her right? Did they really make the dress in two different designs? Or is the model’s photo perhaps reversed? (Zoe’s photo is not reversed because the writing on the wall in back of her is correct.) Just curious. No matter which shoulder is bared, though, the dress is unwearable if these pros can’t give it some life.

    • Evan

I blame this on Stella. First Raf Simons went the Stella McCartney route, now Roland Mouret. Who’s next?

    • oklund

The dress must be a metaphor for her November mood: there was a blue sky, but then the storm clouds set in and now it’s all dark and rainy.

    • another_laura

      Ugly dress. That’s all.

    • Kimberly Wilcox

She can’t be expected to make that hideous dress look any better than she is. But honey, maybe you’ll find something better next time, cause its just not good.

    • GeoDiva

What is the deal with the baby blue bridesmaid side panel? Looks like someone ran out of fabric and picked up a scrap off the floor. Thumbs down.

    • frannyprof

      PR tablecloth challenge.

    • Anna_Cecilia

Discard from the Dollar Store challenge on RuPaul’s Drag Race. If you’re wondering how to make a haphazard and random-looking dress look REALLY cheap, add a pale blue satin panel.

    • marlie

If it weren’t for the random blue panel, I might like the dress. And I just noticed the makeup; yes, part of her face is too light, AND she needs something more than nude/no lipstick. But her hair looks gorgeous.

    • Akemi

It’s…interesting? In a DIY doily dress kind of way.

    • JauntyJohn

      She needs a stronger lip.
      And a different dress.

    • Erica

I’m left wondering why the strap and panel were switched. Did she think it made this thing better in some way?

    • DebbieLovesShoes

This looks like a Project Runway “Unconventional Materials” challenge, or the one where they had to use the leftover fabric scraps off the floor.

    • Fatima Siddique

      Incoherent Frankendress

    • Kate4queen

Oh no, the blue bit just doesn’t go at all

    • Plin

The shape of the dress is good, but everything else about it is either boring or horrific. If she were backlit and showed up only as a silhouette, she’d look terrific.
Not quite what one is usually going for on the red carpet.

    • formerlyAnon

The blue satin is egregious. The rest is just a waay frillier feel than I’m used to from Mouret.

Her make-up (or something, I’ll blame the make up) makes her look wan and pale. Or over-tired, or coming down with something. All of which drags her hair down so that it reads limp rather than elegantly simple.

      Just not her night.

    • TweeAsFuck

The only good thing about this is the eye makeup.

    • Trickytrisha

Ruined a perfectly good dress. Easter basket lining and black duct tape do not enhance your design, M. Mouret. I know the whole “smoky eye and nude lip” thing is set in stone, but here her face just looks unfinished. Hair’s too casual. Love her so, but not one of her best efforts.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

I would have LOVED this if it weren’t for that one inconsistent blue panel that makes no sense with the rest of the dress. If that panel had been black, it would have been spectacular.

    • NoveltyRocker

What is up 2013?? All these wonky, intentionally “off” dresses parading around like it’s progress or something.

    • BrooklynBomber

Holy mother of God. That’s got to go your worst-of-the-year round up.

    • VicksieDo

I thought this was a short dress when I saw her on TV, and that would have been oh so much better.

    • Shawn EH

      Franken-dress.

    • Tracy_Flick

The cut and fit are lovely. However, the scrap fabric and silly beaded hand thing-y are pure church camp.

    • CeeRich

When bad dresses happen to good people.

    • mom2ab

Its the project runway make a dress from a bag of scraps challenge. In the dark. In 15 minutes.

    • quiltrx

Too many weird-for-the-sake-of-it dresses at this show (see J Hud among others). Do not like. It looks cheap and ITCHY.

    • amaranth16

Looks like she ripped her dress in the car on the way over and her grandma fixed it using her coat lining.

    • ThaliaMenninger

It’s not just the random blue panel or the Franken black strap/panel that is making me hate this. I mean, that would be enough. But she’s a beautiful woman with a beautiful shape. This is shapeless. Blocky. A tube of nothing.
