Sarah Hyland in Sass & Bide at the “Catching Fire LA Premiere

Posted on November 19, 2013

We’re simple folk here at T Lo Insincerity, Inc. For instance our favorite part of the holiday season is the simple homespun pleasure of ripping on all the metallics that suddenly get deployed in celebrity-land and on red carpets. Theme dressers and trend followers, the lot of them.

Sarah Hyland attends the premiere of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” in Los Angeles in a Sass & Bide lamé dress paired with black pumps.

But to be honest, we like this more than dislike it. In fact, the only thing we really hate is that centipede on her chest. Get rid of that completely and we think this would be dramatically improved. We don’t like the tricky back, and there’s just a bit too much going in the skirt than there should be, but we appreciate the dress for being really eye-catching and different. And besides, she’s the gal who can pull it off, it seems. It shouldn’t look as good as it does, given the way it’s overdesigned, but she’s making it work, for the most part.

Wear a shiny gold dress to a Hunger Games movie premiere. How original……

    • marlie

She looks better than all of movie’s stars, though (with the possible exception of Elizabeth Banks).

    • NYCGlamourpuss

I know, I was getting ready to post “Serving up Katness realness!” to be funny, but without even scrolling down, I figure that a BUNCH of BKs already beat me to it!

  • Rand Ortega

It’s a lotta look. Like the designer threw a crapload of deets at a dress form & this is the end result. Hair and makeup are pretty.

    • JDreesen

i did say to my husband, “her makeup looks really good.”

which doesn’t sound like much, but i don’t know that i’ve ever said that sentence out loud before in my life, so it was attention-getting enough for this house, anyway.

    • Rhonda Shore

      The make-up is divine.

  • JDreesen

oooooh, maybe those tassel things on the bodice pop off like little fireworks! and she has a tiny remote control in her bra that sets them off whenever she adjusts!

maybe, right?! that would make this dress worth it if they did that. otherwise, yeah – ditch the centipede.

  • Karen Belgrad

I hate the overworked dress, but DAYUM, she should wear metallics year-round. She finally looks like an adult instead of a kewpie doll!

  • ampg

The bronze lipstick is a bridge too far, though.

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

    Unconventional materials runner up.

  • Isana Leshchinskaya

the matching eye makeup is making my eye twitch. and i usually love a good bronze eye. but not here. *eye twitches uncontrollably*

    • rbk

      This.

  • hughman

“Oh Miss, MISS! Yeah, I’ll take 2 packs of Pall Malls and a roll of mints. Can you break a twenty, doll?”

    • Imasewsure

“And Doll… bring a pack of smokes over to my pal Mugsy”…. I’m picturing Edward G. Robinson and Jimmy Cagney
      You nailed it…
      :)

  • MilaXX

Did she get new people? Her hair & makeup are greatly improved and while I agree with the dress critique, overall this look works for her.

  • kmk05

She looks like heavy and cheap fancy wrapping paper. The dress has too many elements, and her face matches the gold dress.

    Nope nope nope nope.

  • lunchcoma

I don’t mind this. There’s too much going on, but it’s a pretty shiny dress on a pretty young girl, and the gold suits her skin tone.

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Did she mug a Native American tribal dancer on the way to the red carpet?

  • marlie

Her hair and makeup are gorgeous. I really love it. The weird “caterpillar” thing on her chest is way too distracting. The dress is a pretty color, but with the stiffness and all of the pleats and folds, it’s veering dangerously close to “gold wrapping paper” territory. Though if the straps were simpler, I’d kind of love the back.

  • alyce1213

There’s something rather interesting about the dress, so there’s that. Ultimately, I don’t think it works on her, maybe too much going on for her petite self.

  • effie

she really does look like a young mila kunis in some shots, wow

honestly my biggest issue here is that sara hyland is in her early 20′s but looks younger so everything on her seems inappropriate. Some dresses read way to young for her, and others seem way to mature, but this seems to find a good balance. I definitely would have preferred a little less detail on the bodice because it seems to overwhelm her a little, but to me this is such an improvement

  • Glam Dixie

This really reminds me of Jillian’s PR season 5 MOMA inspiration dress.

  • gksp

Lovely except for the hooves, I mean, shoes.

  • crash1212

Not loving it. Nobody wants a caterpillar on their chest and I personally would not want a fan-butt either. Also, the shoes? Burn ‘em…with fire.

    • Kathy

Yup, there’s too much tacked onto this poor little dress. Since the fabric is shiny, it really doesn’t need all that crap. And there’s a reason why bustles went out about 100 years ago. The fan part doesn’t really make her butt look big, but neither does it do anything else IMO. I can take or leave the shoes.

  • another_laura

Centipede! Nailed it. Actually very cute without that freaking mess on the front.

  • Laurie Landry

Cute dress for her. It matches her eyes perfectly.

  • Sabin

Resort wear? What, for the remake of Futureworld?

  • teensmom99

    Yup.

  • Imasewsure

NO no no do not appreciate the dress for being eye catching and different!! It’s ugly and ya’ll are too nice!! Looking forward to metal season over the funerial fall for sure though!!

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

Can Carla Gugino’s team take some notes on make up? This is gorgeous work. (The chest is reading “Drum Majorette!” though.)

  • KT

Looks like something you can get at Urban Outfitters. Also that Mary Kay makeup job has got to go.

  • Jane Ire

Can we talk about the model’s smacked clown makeup?

  • jilly_d

Chest centipede. You boys nailed it.

    • Tippi123

      It gave me the creeps!

  • sweetestsith

The whole thing is cray-cray but I kind of enjoy the mini-modern bustle dress thing. The excessive bodice decoration, the wrap skirt in front-bustle in the back… Hilarious take on the 1870s. !880s? I’m torn.

  • Jaeda Laurez

I feel like I appreciate the effort- if there were ANY premiere that kind of demanded clothes that have been slightly overworked, it’s this one. It’s JUST on the right side of crazy.

  • conniemd

Quick someone feed that model. Those skinny legs look like someone suffering from a wasting disease.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

no wonder she looks so unhappy. the makeup is contributing to the look of terminal illness as well.

  • In_Stitches

She’s figuring out her makeup game which is clutch for her. She looks younger than her age; the right face-paint can do a lot to age her up, out of high school roles (although she should hold on to those for as long as she can).

  • bertkeeter

Alot going on with not much of an overall great result!

  • LaSylphide

Minnie Mouse shoes and a very busy dress. Not a good look.

  • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

her chest is covered with those little dressed up toothpicks used for hors d’oeuvres, all lined up and dancing in a row.
    how festive.

  • Janet B

Impressive. She’s wearing a lot of dress and wearing it better than the model.

  • Jean Genetic

Ugh! The model shot uses elephant tusks as a design element. Stop killing these magnificent creatures. If the elephant is already dead, then it’s a fitting tribute to burn the tusks and send it off as a tribute to man’s inherent inhumanity towards animals.

  • tintashoopa

But what about those shoes? They’re huge (and horrible)!!
She looks like a little kid walking around in her mom’s heels>

  • MannahattaMamma

at any moment she’s going to do a triple toe loop & then a double axel. PUH-leez.

  • Trickytrisha

Hognose snake shoes. Party favor bib – why would any designer screw up a perfectly acceptable dress with that dreck? The rest is cute.

  • Jumpingjacks

I’d rather keep the black front (minus the crystals perhaps) instead the two extra layers of pleats in the back.. You need something to break up all that gold, if you take away the black front it’ll be a gold overdose

  • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

She looks quite good, given the circumstances. The circumstances being that shes’ wearing one ugly-ass frock.

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Somehow the bustle and the caterpillar make her look like she’s dressed as a Thanksgiving turkey. Without the caterpillar you have a pretty dress.

  • Mary229

I love this dress on her but I’m a sucker for a good metallic.

  • BayTampaBay

This is one instance where satin pumps work!

  • NOLA_gal

“More cowbell!” Oh sorry, that’s a dress not a cowbell. My mistake.

  • decormaven

Design of dress is overly busy, but the metallic sheen of the fabric is a nice complement to her hair color and makeup.

  • Kent Roby

She looks cute. Bonus: Add a feathered headdress and she’s a member of the Village People.

  • AnniNoone

To be fair, when people wear metallics at other times of year you (TLo) sing Christmas carols at them. What’s a lame*-loving girl to do?

*la-may. I’m too lazy to find the accent.

  • Jennifer McGuire

BeDazzled push mop on the frontage has got to go. Other than that, I have to admit I like it. She’s definitely pulling it off.

  • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

Did someone else wear this on the red carpet recently? Or something like this? That caterpillar leg front looks really familiar.

  • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

The chest is made of Christmas crackers. I want to grab one and pull the ends apart.

  • BrooklynBomber

It’s so out I kind of like it. I definitely like “T Lo Insincerity, Inc.”

  • Alexis Boucher

I kind of like it. Like something a saloon girl would wear in 3025.

  • melanie0866

GREAT color on her. But hate the chest fringe and the buttwings.

  • formerlyAnon

I like the back of the skirt better than the front, which could use fewer folds & flaps. Ditto everyone else on the lack of appeal or need for the chest ornament. Yet. Overall she pulls it off and is cute, here.

  • Aaminah Khan

That gold is working like gangbusters with her colouring. Love the lip colour, too.
