Rooney Mara in Balenciaga at the “Her” Rome Premiere

Posted on November 12, 2013

She had us for the top half, then it all goes kind of weird.

Rooney Mara attends the premiere of “Her” during the 2013 Rome Film Festival at Auditorium Parco Della Musica in a Balenciaga dress paired with B Brian Atwood ‘Labrea’ sandals.

Balenciaga Spring 2014 Collection

The hair and makeup are really pretty. And we really like that yoke and the sheer cape effect. But everything below the waist just look odd to us. Worse, it doesn’t look like her. The tight mini, naked shoes and ponytail all seem a little off-model for the Audreybot. We suppose the weirdness is what keeps it from looking totally conventionally (and thus, even more wrong for her than it already is), but we can’t say it’s working.

I kinda like it. I don’t know if it’s just the pictures, but I think it looks better when the bottom part is a bit more fitted like on the model. On Rooney it looks awkward flaring out like that.

    • cakecakecake

I think it’s…interesting, to say the least. I think it kind of works for her

    • Anathema_Device

i think you nailed it. The sheer part is so baggy, it looks like an afterthought. I do like it from the waist up, though.

      • Inês Martins

Yeah I agree. And is it just me or its a bit short? That side pic of her.

  • Stella Zawistowski

From the shoulders up, I can get behind this. But the rest of it is all kinds of WHAT?!

    • cakecakecake

Totally agree. I saw the thumbnail with the top, and really sort of liked it!

  • Michelle Wilson

I disagree about the hair. It looks fine from the front but decidedly too casual from any other angle.

  • Miss WKS

    I LOVE the side view….

  • marlie

Her makeup looks GREAT. And the hair, while not my favorite style, is just right for this outfit. I love the top, and I love the idea of the dress. I guess if ANYONE is going to wear this, it’s her, and she’s mostly pulling it off.

    • leahpapa

Really picky quibble, because I’m grumpy. In one picture it looks like she’s wearing one of my daughter’s red Goody hairbands. Please tell me it’s a trick of my monitor.

      • marlie

Good call. In one pic, it looks brown, but in another, it looks red. But it would have been better if it was in clear or something. They DO make those.

    • Renaissance_Man_ATL

I think her whole look is great and I also think she’s wearing it better than the model.

  • JimMcC

I’m not a fan of how the kind of bib affect is working at chest area, but I ADORE this from the side and back!

  • ashtangajunkie

I feel like in addition to our “FMO” category, we could also have a “FRMO” category: “For Rooney Mara Only.” This is hers, and hers alone.

  • jilly_d

I REALLY hate the hair, but that girl’s makeup gays always nail it.

  • LeelaST

I actually like the dress, maybe minus the seaming on the sheer overlay. Sort of sci-fi nun/first communion.

I kind of like it – if you have to have the sheer – this is sheer done well – BUT, as I have said like 1000 times: It is mid NOVEMBER , folks in the crowd are wearing coats… she is in a sheer white mini with not there ( bug cute ) shoes…. is it always high August in Famous-land ?

    • Yes. Or, more to the point, it’s whatever temp/season they want for it to be. All they have to do is get in and out of limos, and have their picture taken. If it was an outdoor event, sure, the temperature-appropriate argument would hold water, but as it is, the celebs are more concerned with looking good than being seasonal.

    • MilaXX

until it is actually August, yes. Then they must be in long sleeves, tights and boots.

  • boweryboy

    I like idea of it.

    • Clueless_Jock

I think I’ll need to see the dress in motion but it’s indefinitely intriguing.

  • Danielle

    Scrolldown WTF

  • In_Stitches

Is she at a malaria awareness gala?

  • If we didn’t have the model pic for comparison, I’d assume that there was a sheer garment bag over the dress that was supposed to come off when you wear it. But good face, and I’ll even give the Legolas hair a pass.

  • alyce1213

I don’t really like the dress. Her makeup is perfect, it always is, the hair is just back and flat, which is eh.
She has yet to change her facial expression.
The great-looking curly-haired girl in green and red is totally stealing that shot.

    • Tanya Wade

      My thoughts exactly!

    • charlotte

Right? I know we are not supposed to talk about bystanders, but she looks gorgeous.

  • Julie Chase

I love the makeup, but she’s venturing into “Of course” territory for me now.

    • Spreecord

Isn’t she tired of the Audreybot drag yet?

  • she is so exquisite! the last photo actually sold me on this strange dress.

  • hughman

What in the hell is she doing? She looks like she’s hearing voices in the Balenciagavue Loony Bin and can’t find her meds. Yikes.

    • leahpapa

Her brand management is so consistently “Wear architectural stuff and look dour and people will assume you’re a cerebral artiste” that she’s not even smiling in the picture with the fan. That is either intense commitment to an image or severe depression.

  • LostDancer

Someone forgot to unwrap the Audreybot I see.

  • Blair Sylvester

Sometimes its hard to remember to take the garment bag off the dress before putting it on

  • Adrianna Grężak

I dunno if it’s her posture or the cape, but she constantly looks like she’s slouching

    • Little_Olive

      Yes. It bothers.

  • charlotte

I’m getting so tired of her shtick that I’m pretty much asleep by now (the same goes for Lena,Miley and oh so many others).

  • If underdress was longer, I’d be okay. As it is, I feel she looks as if she had to don a sterile gown to enter a biohazard facility.

    • nowlo

The proportions are definitely off. Making the sheer overskirt narrower would help. The opaque shoulder part and hem on the overskirt as well as the a-line shape are cutting her off horizontally at two points, which makes her seem stumpier than she is.

      • cbt22

I think the underdress only needs to be a little bit longer, but the overdress needs to be much shorter. There’s just too much sheer at the bottom and it seems weirdly stiff on her. Also, I’m really confused about how exactly one puts this thing on. Is there a zipper somewhere that I’m not seeing? How the hell do you get your head through that tiny neck hole while the capelet thing is attached to the rest of the dress? I feel very confused about the whole thing.

        • sojourneryouth

I think you guys are right. The underdress is too short to balance off that big yoke (which I really like on her, and can’t think of too many ladystars that could work it as well), so there has to be more length at the bottom–just not so much of the sheer skirt. If the sheer part were slightly shorter, more fitted, and had a narrower strip at the bottom hem, and the underdress were almost as long, I think this would be lovely.

    • Little_Olive

Also, that skirt could have been made of virtually anything BUT lace. It throws the whole architectural -white-on-white thing off. It also loos quite cheap.

    • SugarSnap108

      Well said.

  • TinaBelchersawkwardmoan

The hair though? It’s a half pony tail. No me gusta.

  • Imasewsure

everything above the waist is lovely. With a floor length gown this might work but “cape” and “overlay” just can’t with a mini (even on the Audreybot). Still not the worst we’ve seen today… that’s for sure!

  • Slanted & Enchanted

I wholeheartedly love this. She is my favorite red carpet persona, maybe because I like to think I’d try to rock weird architectural fashion if I were a movie star.

  • SugarSnap108

I like it in that last profile shot. But it’s unspeakably ugly from the front.

  • Lilithcat

The underdress should be solid and extend to the horizontal seam of the overdress.

  • ThaliaMenninger

When I was young, we called that hairstyle Alice in Wonderland. It’s the one where you pull the sides back and put them in a ponytail while leaving the back down. Dunno why we thought that was Alice in Wonderland. Anyway, it looks wrong on the Mara, and the dress is beyond weird. Like some space age thing with toilet tissue attached for no reason. Princess Prim of the Milky Way.

    • dschubba

I know it as “the Pollyanna,” but only because of a hair-styling book I had as a kid. In real life, I’ve never heard anyone refer to it as anything other than “half-up, half-down”.

  • ceceliadid

She has a look that so completely transcends her clothes that I feel like she should be a fashion designed herself, and take it to the next level.

  • Terri Terri

I’m jealous of her eyebrows. I agree with you about the dress!

  • Trickytrisha

    Such a beautiful face.

  • Jennifer L.

I think part of why it works better on the model (besides the fits issues people have pointed out) is strangely enough because it matches her pale, pale skin tone (or is lit that way). Gives a ghostlike, floaty feeling vs a mosquito net vibe.

  • sleepycat

    I like this, a lot.

  • SewingSiren

On anyone else this would be a complete and utter mess. It’s working for me, but he length in the back is pretty dicey.

  • madscntst

Reminds me of the band members in Robert Palmer’s video, Addicted to Love.

  • MK03

    Sick of her schtick.

  • Bethany Fairbrother

At least she didn’t get the “Audreyeabot” comment. I like that she tries new things…Oh! MUCH LIKE AUDREY HEPBURN! I think if Audrey was alive today or was young in this day and age, she would be a Rooneybot..

  • nannypoo

She looks like her brain has been sucked out. And I hate the dress.

  • KT

Total scrolldown fug. Could have worked, but does not. Also too many household items are coming to mind for this to be fabulous: shower curtain, laundry bag, bib, white pantyhose…..

  • conniemd

Oh goody. More white for November, more sheer over bare legs. My favorite. NOT.

  • LipstickForPigs

    If Loki were a cross-dresser…

  • Qitkat

It’s kind of like a hard-boiled egg cozy.

  • demidaemon

I kinda like this. It’s different, it’s not black, she looks like she is breaking out of her style rut. All good things. My only quibble is the length of the underskirt? mini. If it came down to just above or at the knee, I think it would be perfect.

  • ScarlettHarlot

She and Tom Hiddleston need to play siblings.

  • SportifLateBoomer

    Her face is really exquisite.

The sheer overlay only reminds me, down to the deep hems, of the sheer curtain panels that my elderly aunts had over their windows.

I wear my hair like that sometimes, but it can never get that sleek — never heard it called Alice in Wonderland, though it makes total sense!

    Curiouser and curiouser.

  • Lauren Dorsee Dillon

She forgot to remove the protective dress bag.

  • JauntyJohn

    OMG, this is perfect
for the remake of “Forbidden Planet.”

  • lunchcoma

I wish she’d wear a little color now and then.

  • Julie Parr

It seems sort of space-age bridal.

  • Maluca

It looks like she’s wearing a garment bag.

  • bertkeeter

That’s one hell of a contrived mess! Looks like an out take from a Fellini dream about “NUNS”! The pic with her “pulling the yoke forward” does not convince me it’s working for her either!

  • lrober03

I would love to see what that selfie looks like

  • Give her a reasonable length hem and take over the ridiculous sheer overlay and she would actually be pulling this off.

  • elzatelzabelz

She looks remarkably like Tom Hiddleston. I think it’s the cape effect, but all I can see now is Loki.

    • kittentoes

      Great. Thanks a lot.

  • Big Bear

But she won’t be bothered my mosquitos and that’s the main thing.

  • oklund

Since this sheer trend is here to stay for some time, this dress on Rooney isn’t the worst example of how to pull it off.

  • Diego!

I like it because it’s different. She is getting into the Audrey Bot again? Her face seems so expression-less!

  • formerlyAnon

Waist up, really good. Neck up, fantastic! Full body view, very questionable.

I’m impressed at how she apparently maintained the serene and perfect face for all/most of the photos.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Oh no no no. Even Miss Audrey Come Lately can’t get way with that mess!

  • HVM

That awkward moment when you look plain awkward…

  • bertkeeter

It occured to me last night…this looks more like a dress on a hanger still in it’s garment bag straight from the cleaners, than anyting I’d ever associate with the legendary house of Balenciaga!

  • crash1212

I love this on her and I’m not usually a fan of the sheer-over-dress look. Maybe it’s the over-sized hem that makes it OK because it balances out the proportions of the top? I love the color, she’s luminous in it. Hair and make-up are perfect for the look and I love the one teeny tiny ring. She’s never boring and, to my eye, rarely gets it wrong.

  • Jean Genetic

Get rid of the white panel on the bodice and I think this would have been perfect. Weird, but perfect!

  • Brittany Knupper

I thought you were supposed to take the dress out of the garment bag before you put it on.

  • Thundar99

Love it. Weird maybe but definitely not boring which is funny nay because i was initially thinking, “There goes Rooney wearin’ white again!!” But she always seems to select something with a twist to it.

  • ohayayay

She looks like the female Loki to me, for some reason. Even though she doesn’t really resemble Tom Hiddleston. It’s the attitude really.

  • loveisblind1

Does anyone else thinks she looks like a female version of Tom Hiddleston?
