Nicole Richie in Dolce&Gabbana at the 2013 LACMA Art + Film Gala

Posted on November 04, 2013

Don’t hate us, but we think we love this. It’s yet another Cher moment and we can’t help but support it.

Nicole Richie attends the LACMA 2013 Art + Film Gala honoring David Hockney and Martin Scorsese, held at LACMA in Los Angeles, California in a Dolce&Gabbana dress paired with a House of Harlow 1960 ‘Wynn’ clutch and Jennifer Meyer earrings.

Sure, she looks like a world record holder in vajazzling (if such things existed, which they should), and yeah, we’re not normally inclined to love sheer skirts showing off that much real estate, but this just suits her perfectly. She’s the rare bird who can get away with wearing a dress like this and not come off looking too vulgar. There’s something about the “I Dream of Jeannie” styling that makes it work, we think; a little sense of fun and camp to go with the glam and sexy-sex.

Sex+Glam+Camp=Cher. This is science.

I find I kind of love it too. The styling makes the whole look. Love the hair and admire her ability to wear styles I normally detest and come out looking pretty fab.

  • Latin Buddy

Gorge. This sounds like a classic TLo backhanded compliment but I never realized how beautiful she is. She really pulls off the Studio 54 disco vibe. I love this

    • eowyn_of_rohan

Her eyes look stunning in the second pic. I don’t like the dress on its own, but I like this overall look on her.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

What you said. She looks so terrific here I can’t get annoyed with her for not being anything but a celebrity like I normally do!

    • The disco vibe is why I wish it was shirt and pants instead of a dress.

  • blogless

I’m like it too. I’ve become so impressed with her and her style choices. Who knew.

  • alyce1213

Gorgeous. She went the whole nine yards and won. This is a WERQ.

    • lexilexi

I agree! And THOSE EYES. My god they’re a gorgeous color!

      • merciblahblah

Agree. I am INSANELY jealous of her eyeballs.

    • I agree. It meets the tricky dress plus interesting styling requirement. WERQ don’t just mean pretty, it means triumph over fashionable adversity. (imo)

  • mjude

could this possibly be the beginning of Cher-vember? she looks good but i still don’t get her purpose.

  • Susan

    Love it! Disco fab.

  • “Vajazzling”!!! Are you trying to get me fired? People alone in their offices don’t snort and cackle if they are diligently working.

I like this too. Something about it being Nicole really helps. She can get away with a bit more. Also, though sheer, we aren’t having to deal with granny panties nearly as much.

  • Slave Leia realness.

  • random_poster

Nicole wins it today. This is fab!

  • decormaven

Yes! This is a stunner of a look.

  • ashtangajunkie

    It’s fabulous, top to bottom.

  • Deb Oswald

I was ready to scream when the words camp and glam were so close together that I read the word glamp!!!!! No more glamping flor the love of god.

But I dig the I Dream of Jeannie hair. And the dress is kinda cool on her

  • Shannon Beamer

That is some seriously gorgeous makeup. I mean, a major assist to her genetics (those EYES). But a makeup job done well all the same.

  • I love the slave Leia hair but not so much the dress.

  • marlie

I like the dress, but that expanse of black in the torso gives the visual impression of her having a really long torso, and a larger bust than she has in real life. And then it makes her hips look really narrow. The styling is great, and if I wasn’t distracted by the weird visual elements, I’d call this a WERQ.

    • homofascist

Isn’t ‘longer torso/bigger bust/narrower hips’ usually what a lot of people are trying to achieve? I am usually aiming for ‘smaller belly’, but that is just me! 🙂

      • marlie

I should have been more clear. 😛 It seems (to me) that the dress makes her hips look *disproportionately* narrow. Same with her torso. I just don’t think the dress is that flattering on her.

  • paginatrix

Her hair is totally Star Trek Extra (the one who really wants to have sex with Kirk, but gets killed first).

  • stu844

All I see is Princess Leia sexy slave hair.

  • Trickytrisha

I think because she’s so tiny she can get away with this sort of thing more readily than a larger woman would. It’s like TLo said – Cher, but on a smaller scale.

  • Too much ensemble. She looks so frail she can barely lift her arms in that thing.

  • ojosazules

Just can’t get past the vajazzle. It’s too much.

  • Imasewsure

    Love it

  • MilaXX

meh, unless Vanessa Hudgins she at least manages to wear clothing proportioned to her, but I am unimpressed with this look.

  • Kelly

Not sure I quite see the “not looking too vulgar” part. Then again, I suppose “tacky” and “vulgar” are not necessarily synonyms.

Anyone remember that doll, “Beautiful Crissy” — where you pushed a button on her back (or somewhere), and a long tail of hair grew out from a hole in her head? In lots of versions, the hair looked just like this: a single long braid coming out of a topknot. Lots of pictures online. That’s what this hairstyle reminds me of.

  • rissa42210

I do love it. But I think the neckline could be better suited to her. It’s making her look a little top-heavy. If it was a little more open around the neck and chest, but not too much, I think it would be better. But, yes, darling, give it to me.

  • Kent Roby

I would hate this on the usual suspects (JLo, et al), but really love Nicole in this. She somehow makes this dress look fab and classy, which is a difficult task.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

It helps that she’s tailor made for these ultrafab drag queen looks. I love most of her looks, she’s fierce as shit.

  • Elizabeth Szubert

It’s not working for me. It feels like it’s a bit too Christmas glam too early.

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

The older she gets, the more I love her. She really does look bow-down fabulous here.

  • YoungSally

If it were Bob Mackie, it would be a fabulous pantsuit.

  • Violentcello

I hate the braid and I’m afraid the eye makeup is too heavy for her teeny-tiny face. And the band around her knees is weird. And I’m not sure I’m on board with the wrist feathers. I do love the top half of the dress, though.

  • MiriamMc75

    FAB. U. LUSSSSS!!!

  • formerlyAnon

It’s an ART+FILM gala at the L.A. County Museum of Art. So I have no complaints, and only one quibble. Her fake braid looks really fake in these photos.

  • Lesley

all hail queen Nicole, only she can make this work, and she WERQS the hell out of thiss

  • pookiesmom

Wow, I think this is horrible!

  • Blair Sylvester

She has really impressed me as a celebrity who has really managed to rehab her image (and hopefully herself)

  • rajf

I think some people’s facial structure just seems to look better and
better with age, and then life experience or whatever chips in something
ineffable that makes a difference as well. Beyond the clothing, she’s looking like someone with
some substance instead of someone who’s famous for being, well, famous.

  • I actually love the hair here.

  • kayehmwhy

“Vajazzling”, actually people have this done IRL. Gorgeous look on her.

  • bertkeeter

Boring! Just not all that..and who cares if it’s sheer?? C’mon….over it!

  • cocohall

More of this, please. It is quirky and fabulous and uniquely suited to her. She has evolved since her running days with Paris H. into a real student of fashion. I like happy endings. You Go Girl!

  • elzatelzabelz

I’d like it more if the beading went down a skoosh more.

    • conniemd

But at least it is beading and not gawd awful granny pants we see under the sheer. I do agree that revealing at bit less would have made the look much better. Nonetheless, I think I like it.

  • rondele

I like it. I can’t think of too many women who could wear this as well as she is.

  • sagecreek

You don’t think this is vulgar?

  • quiltrx

I was kind of digging it until we got to that weird horizontal line at the knees. Ruins the line.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I like it, but. The lined bodice makes her shoulders look bulky, those feather cuffs are too much and the bottom half should be bell bottoms.

  • ballerinawithagun

  • MannahattaMamma

Love it. She’s so very teeny that somehow it’s delicate & not trashy. But the bones in her hands–she’s so tiny that at this point she is literally nothing but skin, bones, and glitter held together with hair gel.

  • crash1212

I love everything going on north of her neck. I don’t hate the dress. She really is a stunning looking woman.

  • maggiehuck

I’m loving this, too. One minor quibble — did she have to use a black rubberband to finish off that otherwise perfect herringbone braid? It’s as if she walked out of the ladies’ trailing toilet paper.

  • I don’t hate you but I don’t see how you can love this. To me she this just comes off as tacky.

  • Michelle Gennari

  • ConnieBV

    LOVE. HUH.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

  • MissAmynae

God her eyes are just gorgeous.

  • St. Ace

I think it helps that she’s standing with her legs together. Ditto on the styling, especially the hair, to keep it from becoming vulgar.
