Nicole Richie in Alberta Ferretti at the 2013 Baby2Baby Gala

Posted on November 11, 2013

It’s possible we’re just primed to appreciate any outfit with a little bit of color to it, but we’re loving this look.

Nicole Richie attends the 2013 Baby2Baby Gala held at The Book Bindery in Culver City, California in Alberta Ferretti.

Alberta Ferretti Spring 2014 Collection

Truth be told, we’re not totally in love with the top here. We can’t help thinking it was meant to be worn either with a pencil skirt or skinny pants. And we do think the top and skirt might just be competing with each other a little too much. On the other hand, we did a little gay gasp at the sight of her. Gay gasps always win the argument, darlings.  That skirt is a stunner. And it’s neither sheer nor black, which is itself cause for celebration.

  • And is Nicole looking… classy? It’s the end of the world, clearly.

    • Awww. To be fair, now, she’s been dressing quite well for some time now. She’s all grown up!

      • Darren Nesbitt

Yeah she has been classy for sometime now.

      • homofascist

She has been consistently one of my favorites after the Cate-Tilda-Dita triumvirate…

        • conniemd

May have to had Lupita Nyong’o to that list one of these days.

          • homofascist

Lupita. And Fan Bingbing. And Rachel Evan Wood. And Rose Huntington-Whiteley.

        • And Lucy Liu!

      • kmk05

I wouldn’t go as far as sayinf she has a regal bearing, but her posture and her face (especially her eyes) always confer little something extra to her looks.

        • She’s figured out how to play up her unique features to their best effect. I’m sure it’s easier when you have resources like she does, but it’s still admirable.

        • fursa_saida

She is SO PRETTY, I’m always a little stunned.

        • St. Ace

Good posture makes such a huge difference, I wish younger starlets would follow this example!

    • AzSportsGirl

I had a similar thought… Nicole grew up. Her former BFF Paris just grew (continues to grow) tackier.

    • Nah. Nicole’s been classy ever since she stopped associating herself with Paris Hilton. The girl got some style.

  • That skirt is stunning. Camp Fire Girl chic!

    • I’m glad she went for the full hemline instead of the pegged one on the model. But what’s with that seam?

      • JLou

Today is full of badly-pressed hems and seams. Are the irons on strike?

      • MoHub

The flare is definitely an improvement over the full-length dirndl effect on the model.

  • It goes purty with the color of her amazing eyes. I like it, but I do see the trickiness of the top/skirt shapes together. Only the wee could pull this off, which she luckily is.

  • Karen Belgrad

I love the skirt… I really do…. but my first thought was… “I found Nemo”

  • BP180

Sorry but yuck. Those two items Do Not Go. And I hate her nail polish.

  • decormaven

Love the colors in this look! Not sure I care for the peek of midriff with the top, but overall, it’s a stunner of a look. Thank the heavens the hair is simply styled.

    • marlie

Considering what else we’ve seen today… too much back and side skin, and a glimpse of nipple? Midriff is nothing.

      • decormaven

Oh, it’s not the midriff baring, it’s just that it cuts the verticality of the look. She’s a petite gal who’s already rocking horizontal lines in the skirt- the look didn’t need another horizontal line.

  • Inês Martins

Make up is stunning on her, low-key and spot on beautiful! Love the skirt colors!

  • How cute is she? Love this. I’m dying to know what her shoes look like.

    • You can see it a little in pic 8. I Googled it – it looks like a pointy-toed nude kitten heel. Neither here-nor-there, really. Which I guess is good, considering the really-wrong shoe could destroy this look.

  • Lesley

if only her former “simple life” self could see her now. flawless!

  • Ashleigh

OK. Call me picky, but the way the skirt seems to have been altered is buggin. Why are the pleats no longer consistent? Why is the stripe not perfectly lined up with the band across the top?

    • Clueless_Jock

Was the model wearing a bubble skirt?

      • tereliz

I think it’s just the model’s stride that’s making it look that way. The skirt doesn’t get wide enough at the bottom to make it flow. Nicole’s is a little long on her, making it look a little droopy. Hers seems to have an off-center front seam—but just one—that’s absent from the model’s version that makes it look like it’s on backward.

    • marlie

I think it’s just twisted around?

      • tereliz

That’s what I was just trying to figure out with that weird seam down the front. There’s only one, but it’s not in the middle. And there’s that tiny bit of coral peeking out of gathers at the waist band right there, too.

    • alyce1213

The waistband/skirt seam is definitely wonky, and right up front. Bad sewing.

    • Janet B

The stripes are off, there seem to be extra pleats, and a seam or crease down her right front. Maybe the skirt is turned around, but the drooping stripe isn’t acceptable from any side.
      I’m picky too!

eta: The Spring colors are gorgeous on her.

  • Stella Zawistowski

It doesn’t exactly scream “November” to me, but otherwise it’s a pretty great look.

    • Jangle57

      My thought exactly!

  • Danielle

Love this whole look. The flowers on the shoulders are my favorite!

  • Amanda Welliver

    The rings are perfect.

    • kimmeister

I love how she decided to reference the turquoise in her outfit, rather than the more prominent colors.

  • marlie

This is GORGEOUS. I could have gone with a different top, but I kind of like the shape and volume of it. And the flowers sort of soften and offset the colors in the skirt. Nicole looks fab! (I’m a little bugged by the fact that her skirt seems off-centered, though.)

  • tereliz

The volume in the bottom of the skirt is really problematic when paired with a cropped, flared top like that, but she looks lovely and chic and for such a petite she is carrying off the look fairly well.

  • Danielle

PS Can we talk about a baby gala being sponsored by Porsche and Harry Winston?

    • I blame the rich bitch trend of “push presents”.

      • Danielle

I remember being on a birth forum board and all the ladies were talking about making their husbands buy them Coach purses for push presents. SMMFH.

        • I don’t know what SMMFH means but I hope two of the words are fucking and hell.

          • Danielle

            “Shaking my motherfucking head”

          • That’s a very useful one!

  • hughman

Who knew Ukrainian Folk Dancers could be so chic?

  • alyce1213

Love it. A lot of delicate, petite women get swallowed up in stuff like this, but she’s pulling it off beautifully.
Nicole Richie is really becoming a style icon. Nice.

  • I love the skirt! And maybe if the top were fitted and didn’t have the gap at the waistband?

  • June, I’d love this in June. Not November.

  • Carla_Charlton

Skirt should be a bit shorter. Colors are really nice on her.

  • AnnaleighBelle

Mrs. Madden usually has that effortless chic look that you KNOW took tons of effort.

Such a 180 from her Simple Life days…

  • Latin Buddy

OMFG when did Nicole Ritchie turn into a classy fashionista?! THIS IS GIVING ME LIFE!

  • boweryboy

Even though it’s from a spring 2014 collection I LOVE the skirt, but not with that top.

This is a perfect example of why one should not attempt to recreate the runway look.

  • stellamaris73

Make the belly top a proper blouse – tucked in, in a lighter, more fluid fabric – and this would be perfect. It’s the stiffness and the sliver of stomach showing that spoil the effect.

The skirt is glorious. Juicy, saturated colors.

  • madscntst

Eh – I look at this outfit and all I can think is, “Where is the piñata?”

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

It’s very pretty and she has the perfect skin tone for those bright, vibrant colors. Attagirl!

  • Lilyana_F

    J’adore! Top to bottom!

  • formerlyAnon

I like it on her a lot. And the look emphasizes how tiny and adorable she can look. I suspect that in person some of her odder looks are great – that she looks just like a perfect little human version of some kind of ornament.

  • MilaXX

I think it’s very cute and somehow manages to be lady like despite the strip of belly showing.

  • melanie0866

Cute! IF IT WEREN’T NOVEMBER. This is a summer dress.

  • Gatto Nero

It suits her — a sophisticated and colorful version of her usual pixie boho look.

  • DominoEstella

I love this, it looks great on her and the colors are stunningly beautiful

  • mrspotts66

    she’s come a long way.
    love the skirt!

  • nannypoo

I love everything about this. She looks adorable.

  • J. Preposterice

the colors work well with her skin tone, and the shoulder appliques help make enough interest up-top to sort of balance things out.

Her bra is annoying me, though. GIRL. that is the wrong bra for this outfit.

  • She looks so pretty. Love Nicole’s style.

  • KT

That skirt is absolutely beautiful, I agree with you on that one. And I think the top itself would have been fine with it, had she removed the Lisa Frank shoulder details. Gorgeous otherwise though! Viva orange + blue!

  • KinoEye

This is an adorable look… for the summer. Seriously lusting for that skirt, though.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Hem the skirt up one inch and I am so on board.

  • amber.

someone call rachel bilson and let her know this is how you do it

  • Trickytrisha

Although I prefer the skirt version on the model, this is kinda cool, especially considering how very petite she is.

  • Miss WKS

    it’s a shame….that big-ass seam in the front.

  • Not applicable

i like it- but isn’t this spring/summer? the ultra-white and flowers just don’t say fall-into-winter… and sigh- I am SO tired of the wrong season dress…

    • conniemd

Seems like color was absent all summer, and now we are seeing clothes which would have worked great for some summer events. I do like the outfit though because the initial glance is very eye catching.

      • Not applicable

totally agree about the color- I think the skirt could work for winter w. a different top.- but it’s winter now- sleeveless/midriff WHITE top? gah!

  • Jan de la Rosa

My only concern: where is her hair?

  • Imasewsure

I almost always love what she wears… guess boho-chic RC is my go-to and this little thing is a favorite of mine. Love the skirt and even love the top… It was pretty nice in LA so I guess it’s seasonally appropriate for CA anyway

  • Lilithcat

    It’s fun! It’s summery!

But I wish the venue really were a book bindery.

  • Rachael

I NEED that skirt in my closet NOW!!!

  • guest2visits

I like this on her; bright and fresh. Sometimes Nicole dwells on the long and flowy stuff too much,
but this does not overpower her or age her like some of her choices.

  • Mariah J

Wow I really love this look. Perfection.

  • macwell

Looks like she’s shrinking (throwing it ALL up again 🙁 Hopefully that’s not the case….:(

    • JDreesen

my first reaction, too, was that she is disappearing before our eyes. i am hopeful it is just the camera angle, but all i can see are her protruding bones and [to me, more minuscule than usual] frame.

  • jw_ny

That really is a great skirt…stripes & colors. For such a tiny thing, she sure can make a bold statement. The entire look, head to toe, works for me.

  • She looks so pretty, and as though she feels pretty too. And, while I agree when you examine it, the look isn’t perfect, the effect of it is just beautiful and fabulous.

  • Snailstsichr

This is the first crop top I’ve sen in ages that I liked. I even think she’s wearing it better than the model. Lovin’ this look.

  • Belvane

Nope, can’t agree with this one. That outfit is a piñata.

  • GillianHolroyd

The top is too big on her and she’s standing with her shoulders back and mid-section thrust out which makes the top shorter in the front. Love the skirt.

  • Lilak

I like this a lot — especially partial to the skirt. But . . .
I guess they do November even mo’ different in California than I assumed. A sort of seasonal version of “it’s 5 o’ clock somewhere”?

  • I looooove that skirt. And while the pieces don’t go, she’s rocking it better than the model with the same pairing. Sleek hair was a good choice here. I want this skirt so I can wear it with a turtleneck and swan about.

  • CommentsByKatie

Adore this. I feel like Nicole almost always has a hard time pulling together a look that works for her. This is stunning.

  • quiltrx

Really cute! I could go without the “Dora Belly” (as my sister and I call it–ever noticed that Dora’s shirt and shorts NEVER meet?), but I’ll just keep looking at the skirt.

  • Claudia

She holds herself in a strange manner…or maybe I’m just preparing for an old age humpback. But she looks well cute.

  • sagecreek

Adorable…and she’s on my Irrational Hate List, so that’s saying something.

  • R. L.

The colors make my frosted heart heat up. In the middle of winter fog doldrums here and that outfit snaps me out.

  • Kent Roby

Again Nicole looks to me like an updated modern version of Audrey Hepburn, i.e. “Win”.

  • Judih1

This outfit loses a point from me because it looks like spring/summer attire

  • Surprisingly cute, despite being out of season.

  • Milos Mom

I think it would have been better if she had left it tapered on the bottom.

  • PeggyOC

I’ve figured out what bugs me about this outfit. Make the skirt baggy knit trousers and you could find this outfit in the kids aisle of any clothing store. She looks like a Garanimal. This is a two-year old’s outfit, dolled up.

  • Jacob Bowen

I WANT THAT SKIRT! I would totally wear it to a Chicago Bear’s game!!!
