Michelle Dockery for Boston Common Magazine

Posted on November 21, 2013

Lady Mary brings the drama, in that totally Lady Mary way of hers.

“Downton Abbey” star Michelle Dockery covers the Holiday issue of Boston Common magazine  in a Valentino dress photographed by Liz Collins.

On playing Lady Mary: “I love playing her because of her behavior at times. I find she can be quite shocking. She has a real bite to her that I love playing, because I don’t think I could ever be that way. That’s the joy of being an actor—you can play tap into those sides of yourself that feel unfamiliar.”

On the security that comes with starring in a worldwide hit television show: “I’ve got myself a nice flat in London now. I felt like I moved all the time when I first started out, like a gypsy, every six months. It’s great to have a home and everything else that comes with it. Being recognized is very amusing. It’s wonderful.”

On her personal style: “I’ve taken much more of an interest in style and color, and fashion generally, since being in the show. I like to keep it very classic and simple. I like a French feel to everything—whatever that means.”

She is KILLING it in that last shot. Michelle dear, you have no excuse for not looking good on the red carpet. These are your looks. Copy them endlessly. We promise not to get bored.

I just had to read the quotes in her Mary voice.
      She looks wonderful!

      • gabbilevy

        Yes! I couldn’t help it.

    • skitzfiggitous

She is a very special level of British Pale. Degree: Ghost. Pretty pictures, though.

      • rosie5215

Yes, I was just thinking that it is strange to see a young female celebrity – particularly from the UK! – not drenched in spray-tan. It’s quite striking.

      • Mismarker

She is very much the classic “English rose”.

      • Constant Cat

I absolutely love it. I think a woman’s skin in its natural color/state is true, natural beauty.

        • Rhonda Shore

hear hear! She is a classic winter, work those jewel tones!!!

    • rosie5215

I’m not crazy about the cover. From a distance, she looks slightly cross-eyed and/or drunk.

      • Ginny Ellsworth

Well it is the holiday cover.

      • jen_vasm

And it looks like her hair got caught in a zipper and her head is stuck in that position.

    • Wrenaria

    • marlie

I love all of these looks. They’re so… HER. Really interesting pieces with fairly simple hair and makeup is her thing.

    • Mismarker

If she had a mic, she would have dropped it after that last shot. Gorgeous.

    • Margaret Hardin

    • MilaXX

I think she is slowly learning her style and how to make it work for her. I just want one picture of her trying something different with her hair.

    • GeoDiva

The red tights/stockings are awful…. otherwise everything else is great.

      • charlotte

She looks like she stepped into a bucket of red paint.

        • demidaemon

I kind of love the tights. All that red is very striking against her skin color.

    • Hetha Innis

She is gorgeous! I’m in awe of that milky complexion.

    • Maggie

Are these the same photos from an InStyle magazine she was in earlier this year? They look really familiar to me.

    • R.A.

I love that she said being recognized is wonderful… bless all celebrities who understand that that kind of attention comes with the territory! I’m not saying it’s ok when people invade other’s personal space or harass them, but it’s nice to see a celebrity who doesn’t act like her fans are plague-carriers!

      • MissWix

Granted, I think being an English actor comes with much less hysteria. I feel like a lot of them consider acting their job, and typically the English public don’t invade their space in the same way.

        • R.A.

You may certainly be right… they are generally a more dignified people than us North Americans I think :)

        • MIM

I visited a college friend in London on Spring Break one year. He was saying something very similar as we sat in a pub, then the waitress dropped our beers because she was “very nervous around famous people.” (He was a former child star, now–years later–a stage actor.) It was perfectly timed.

    • kimmeister

That dress on the cover is to die for!

    • ThaliaMenninger

The red dress on the cover is MADE for her. And that sparkly top in photo no. 3 is wonderful, too.

    • SewingSiren

Love everything. . Red stockings with red shoes especially love that.

    • http://twitter.com/janedonuts Jane Donuts

If she keeps this up, she might replace Marion Cotillard as my lady fashion crush.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Oddly, the first shot is giving me Princess Buttercup Realness. (The red tights always stand out to me when I watch that movie.)

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

That’s better than my impression of Emperor’s Royal Guard.

      • Violentcello

Heck yes. Red flowing dress, red tights … good thing she’s not a blonde, or I’d wonder if the link was intentional.

      • ItsDicey

Oooooh, forgot about that. Good catch.

    • Kelly

I love that 50s style of 3/4-sleeves with gloves (especially leather). Hope it comes back. I think she looks great, if a trifle over-lit.

      • ItsDicey

        Me, too.

    • MGMcD

Red leather elbow length gloves. I DIE.

    • 3boysful

My favorite is her in the Jill Sanders.

    • KinoEye

Prim, proper, and sexy as hell. Kudos, Lady Mary and stylists of Boston Common.

    • Daisy Walker

She looks so awesome in saturated colors. She should hire whoever styled this shoot immediately!

    • tereliz

Not wild about the lighting in photo 2 but she is just GORGEOUS!!

    • mcb

She rocks the old school glamor but fresh look like few can. We can’t not look at her.

    • Jessica Freeman

Just leave your red stockings at home, otherwise, wear this, all the time.

    • decormaven

Two thoughts: something about the pose in the cover makes me think of those old Maidenform ads- “I dreamed I was the devil’s temptress in my Maidenform bra.” Also, a “French feel” must involve wearing touches of red.
Nevertheless, she’s looking fab in all looks.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

I love red and I’d like to see her in the cover look standing next to Alan Cumming from yesterday. “Tis the season.

    • msdamselfly

      Endlessly repetitive

    • crash1212

Love the outfit in the second shot. Love the face in the last shot. Red hose will never be OK.

    • Kathy

She looks glamorous, sophisticated and sexy. She should hire the stylist from this photo shoot.

    • formerlyAnon

Like 2nd look, LOVE the last one. Cover is hard to judge as she looks artificially elongated and it’s too close to the ever-popular “broken doll” pose for women that never seems to go completely out of style and which I HATE.

    • frannyprof

She finds being recognized “amusing.” How very Lady Mary.

    • boweryboy

That last photo is awesome. This is the best I’ve ever seen her look.

    • Not applicable

LOVE that blue suit with the red leather gloves…. want. gimme.

    • rondele

She likes a “..French feel to everything…” but she doesn’t know what it is? That’s a little weird. The red stockings must go. Period. For some reason she is on my irrational list, just doesn’t do it for me. To me her acting is just flat, and she has no style.

      • Nonmercisansfacon

I’m with you on that. She irritates me for no reason whatsoever.

    • Sarah Winningham

The cover photo is giving me pure Kate Bush circa Wuthering Heights.

    • alyce1213

She needs to be standing next to Alan Cumming in his all-red ensemble.

    • Laura F.

I think these pics are recycled from an InStyle shoot earlier this year.

    • jilly_d

That shot of her in the Jil Sander is EVERYTHING.

    • Qitkat

Beyond stunning. Love the red stockings. All these colors are perfection for her complexion.

    • EEKstl

    • Alloy Jane

Holy crap she looks amazing. I mean seriously, that cover look gave me a shiver. And I read the quotes in her Lady Mary voice too 😀

Why no love for pantyhose? i think they work perfectly on the cover. Not really a fan of the red socks in the third photo though.

    • Trickytrisha

Good heavens above… talk about milk white skin. These pics are pretty stupendous. Love her face in the second one, love the red dress. Oh hell, I love it all. No point in listing everything.

    • appliquer

Learn from this and never wear black again!

    • Paula Pertile

      She looks amazing.

So, are navy and red “in”? I’m wanting to see Alan Cumming in his red suit, and Cathy Cambridge in her navy dress all lined up in a row with these pics.

    • jw_ny

Lady Mary is killing it in pics 2 & 3! She really should wear her hair as it’s styled in pic 2…so flattering and sexy.

    • quiltrx

I really like her in the Jil Sander.

    • Sunraya

That red Valentino!! I adore it!! I love the cuffs on the sleeves – so classic and elegant! She is quite the beauty and when I compare the way she looks at fame compared to, say, Julia Roberts, this woman deserves every good thing that comes to her!

    • Vanja

I covet that blue/purple Jil Sander suit.

    • Mona_Visa

Dockery was on my short list to portray Maleficent. Jolie has it wrapped, yes, but if there were ever a play…

    • NYCGlamourpuss

THE PRETTY!!!! I don’t even watch the show, so that’s all I have to say – THE PRETTY!!!

    • Shawn EH

“french feel, whatever that means” — It means you’re British, dear.

    • Filmjen

      The cover. Gorgeous.

    • Fannie Wolston

Awkward cover pose, looks puppet-ish all gangly limbs like a broken doll
