Michael B. Jordan in Prada at the 2013 GQ Men of the Year Party

Posted on November 14, 2013

We’re huge fans of tone-on-tone, but this strikes us as an odd way to go about it.

Michael B. Jordan attends the 2013 GQ Men Of The Year Party at The Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles, California in Prada.

Prada Spring 2013 Collection

The shirt and the pants are the same color, while the jacket is a different shade of blue. He’s ridiculously cute, and we love the colors and appreciate the tailoring here (although the split in the jacket is a bit wide and looks strange with three buttons), but we really don’t like the way way the colors are deployed. Call us traditional, but if any two pieces should match here, it’s the jacket and pants. Jacket and shirt matching give it a priest-like feeling and when you put a much lighter jacket over it, it suddenly feels like a formal uniform of some sort.

Y’know, the more we think of it, the more most men’s styling on the red carpet comes down to one thing, so we’re going to make it a T Lo Mens Style Dictum. Are you ready? This is momentous. Kind of like a burning bush or a sermon on a mount. Here we go:

A white shirt would fix this in a second.

That’s not tone on tone, that’s just not looking in the mirror.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

He’s so adorable. But he looks like he’s wearing a lady’s blazer.

      • kimmeister

It’s totally giving him an hourglass shape.

      • uprightcitizen

My thoughts exactly. It doesn’t matter what the color of it is, the shape, the length of it, the oddly short lapels, and the seaming, along with the way it follows the contours of his shoulders (what IS that?) is pure “Sassy Sport” (to borrow from David Sedaris). That, or one of those adorable little suits that prepubescent boys wore in the 1890s. The bottom button on a blazer should definitely not be a couple of inches above the waistband of your pants. And the skinny pants look like jodhpurs on him. Seems he’s going for an early 60s rat pack style, but the fit is just way off. I think if the lines were sleeker, in all of it, the colors wouldn’t be so strange.

      • Janet B

Recently someone else was wearing what I thought was a woman’s blazer.
Is it the three buttons along with a wide split? The length? The seaming? Beats me.

      • http://www.GiftedCollector.com/ The Gifted Collector

Looks as if he dressed from Ellen De Generes’ closet.

      • Meg0GayGuys6

Opps! He must have grabbed my blazer off the floor as he left this morning by accident.

        … I can dream, can’t I

    • hughman

He’s cute! In a very “I dressed myself for Sunday School, Mama” kind of way.

      • Introspective

nailed. feels too kiddie for me. time to sex it up michael. cause youve got the looks for it…

    • decormaven

Good call on the shirt! There’s a bit of a fit issue about the jacket. But he is a cutie!

    • LeelaST

I understand jackets come in a variety of lengths and styles, but for something approximating a “suit/sports coat” isn’t the rule that with your arm at full length the hand should cup the hem? Am I out of date here?

    • http://www.what-the-frock.com Dana WhatTheFrock

I have almost zero opinion on what he’s wearing but, like almost everyone who was on Friday Night Lights, I adore him. And he’s adorable.

    • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

He’s certainly an attractive young man, and that counts for a lot, but the colors and fit are weird. This outfit is not helped by the fact that I’ve been invited by Disqus to revisit an earlier post about him, in which he was awarded a WERQ! for a Calvin Klein suit that is clearly superior to this.

    • Sobaika

Vince Howard and his megawatt smile can do no wrong.

    • gabbilevy

Love him, but he should ditch the jacket. And the rest of those unnecessary clothes.

    • Courtenay P

      gimme them shoes

    • mjude

AWSWFTIAS….not sure my abbreviation is working but TLO is spot on

    • sagecreek

Doesn’t that jacket look too small?

Anyway. It’s WALLACE! And I love him.

      • AlinaValero

WHERE’S WALLACE, STRING?! that’s all i can think about when i see him.

    • BobStPaul

The color of the jacket is so great I think he should be forgiven for his minor sartorial sins.

    • ampg

To be fair, you guys have also gone on record several times admonishing the Men of the Red Carpet for wearing “boring white shirts,” so I do understand their confusion. They just want to make you happy, TLo!

      • marlie

Those guys are usually wearing boring black or grey suits, though. ;)

    • Judy_S

“Jacket and shirt matching give it a priest-like feeling”–pants and shirt.

    • marlie

The guys with boring black/grey/navy suits always wear white shirts (and black, grey, or navy ties), and the guys in bold colored suits go with anything BUT white. These guys need to meet up backstage/before they hit the red carpet, and just do a clothing swap or something. They’d ALL look better.

      • wisenhar

Ooo, I think I’d like to watch that! ;-)

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

Hmm, no, not backstage. Do the swap frontstage. Ah ha. Ha ha.

      • conniemd

This, this in spades. Either color with boring suits or white with the colored suits. Preach on.

    • MilaXX

Sure a white shirt would help, but I think this look could also work if the colors were reversed. Make the pants & shirt the lighter blue and the jacket the darker blue. I also don’t like slim cut suit on anything but waif thin male stars. Normal sized guys like Michael here end up looking hippy.

      • filmcricket

All of this, thank you. Also not sure about the tie – it feels a bit off with all the blue around it.

    • Cindy Claussen

      Baby Nick Cannon

    • Jacqueline Wessel

I love the color of that jacket and he’s cute, too.

    • ashtangajunkie

He’s all kinds of adorable, but the three button jacket looks weird to me. Reminds me of ‘The Office’ when Michael accidentally purchases a women’s suit.

    • crash1212

He’s a cutie, but this look isn’t working for me at all. I don’t like those blues together and that jacket doesn’t seem to fit correctly – it’s weird around the shoulders and buttoning those two buttons isn’t helping.

      • kimmeister

Yeah, the jacket is slightly teal, so it’s not quite the same tone as the shirt/pants.

    • jw_ny

Jacket makes him look hippy, and the cut, along with 2 buttons buttoned, looks juvenile.

What do all the male celebs have against a good crisp white shirt!? ijdk.

    • pookiesmom

      He is so delicious.

    • Lily-Rygh

Every time I see a thumbnail of this guy, I think it’s Nick Cannon. Does this say something bad about me?

      • Trickytrisha

        There is a fleeting resemblance.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

But the fit of that jacket is just so… odd.

    • Imasewsure

Nicely put gentlemen… Many of the world’s problems could be solved with a well hung dictum….

    • Trickytrisha

Cute as a bug, but weird ass jacket.

    • lilyvonschtupp

Who cares? He’s cute! (but agree about the white shirt)

    • forward_slash_PRS

I could not agree more with your Dictum. My sport coats and neckties are such interesting colors and patterns, I almost always wear a white shirt with them. Nicely sets off my tan in the summer too.

    • formerlyAnon

      Bwahahahaha!
      T Lo, y’all just can’t be beat.

    • Meg0GayGuys6

      He has kind eyes

    • guest2visits

He looks so good but for the jacket. I would rather lose the jacket because of fit and color.

    • quiltrx

The jacket was apparently designed by someone with a vendetta against shoulders.

    • sisterb67

Funny that the comparison to a “formal uniform” is made, because this blazer is just a tad bit lighter than the dress blues jacket that West Point cadets wear for formal assembly.

    • JDreesen

Best. Visual. Of the microphone-dropping bit. Ever.

      thank you.

ps – at least one of you is wearing a pair of saddle shoes in my visual; is that alright and, if so, who gets dibs?
