Lupita Nyong’o in Prabal Gurung at the 2013 Governors Awards

Posted on November 18, 2013

From the waist up, its pure WERQ.

Lupita Nyong’o attends the 2013 Governors Awards at The Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood, California in a Prabal Gurung tuxedo-inspired dress paired with Christian Louboutin white pumps and a Charlotte Olympia clutch.

Prabal Gurung Resort 2014 Collection/Model: Chiharu Okunugi

Unfortunately, from the waist down, it’s pretty much a WREQ.

We will cop to the fact that we hate tulip skirts. Hate ’em, hate ’em, hate ’em. They always say, “The curtain is rising… on my vagina!” We’re as gay as a pink Christmas tree full of twerking turtle doves, but every time we see a gal in one of these, our eyes go straight to her crotch.

We don’t think we’ve ever thought, uttered, or heard the words “What a flattering tulip skirt!” So, fine. We’re biased against them. But ask yourself: have you ever seen a tulip skirt on someone and thought it was really flattering? Models don’t count. Models never count.

In other, less ranty news, we don’t mind the trend for white shoes right now, but we really don’t think they look right with black dresses. Also: we’re going to need a ruling on her lip color. We love that she wears so much purple on her face, given the chance, but we’re not sure whether this looks chic, or like she just finished a giant grape lollipop.

Models don’t count. Models never count.

Only thing I tell myself so I can enjoy a cookie or ice cream. Hate being gay 🙂

    • tereliz

Love the purple lippy on her. Hate the skirt, hate the white shoes.

    • sisterb67

      Yea: the lip color.
Nay: that abomination of a hemline.
Meh: the shoes, I can’t even say I like or dislike them. I nothing them.

    • ChaCha_70

Love the lip color on her. Such a shame with the bottom half of this look. Total scrolldown fug.

      • Down to about her hips, it’s awesome. But the overall effect is to make her look stumpy.

      • nowlo

Yeah, this would have been an amazing dress if the skirt were floor-length and a little flowy toward the bottom or merely good if it were a normal pencil silhouette.

      • sweetestsith

Love the lip color, and love the nails in a deeper shade of plummy goodness. Totally agree with the bottom half, mid thigh down is just a mess.

    • Emily Dagger

I join you in tulip skirt rage. And the shoes appear to be the same ones I bought from Payless for my eighth grade graduation.

They were misguided even then, but in my defense, it was 1991. And I was 14.

The lip… I feel like could work with different makeup? My concern is that it may be the matching color to the nail (which is great), and it just reads really differently on her face than it does on her hands.

    • hmariec19

“We’re as gay as a pink Christmas tree full of twerking turtle doves”

      I. DIE.

      • MikeW_Vegas

That comment alone made my Monday morning that much better!

        • bitchybitchybitchy

Indeed-that comment makes up for the fact that I’m home snuffling into my kleenex with a cold-thanks, uncles!

      • CakesOnAPlane

“foooour calling birds, three French hens, two twerking doves, and a gay-ass pink Christmas tree!”

        • theblondette

Let’s make a TLo/Bitter Kittens 12 Days of Christmas! We already have 2 twerking doves and the pink Christmas tree… so we just need 3 through 12!

          Twelve Sausage Fridays
          Eleven Miss Universes
          Ten Lords with Bad Hems
          Ten Ladies with Nude Pumps…

          Finish me up!

          • demidaemon

            Five Ringless Hands?

          • Jacob Bowen

            Nine Gucci Winged Fish Dresses!

          • rh33

            Four grannie panties.

    • SewingSiren

I agree about the skirt. The opening in front is too open(worse on the model). But she is somewhat like Rooney Mara in that what would look vulgar on most looks interesting and stylish on her.

    • I’m in white ankle boots and a black dress right now….and the street says, “You’re gorgeous”. White shoes belong to black dresses right now – it helps make it look fresher rather than the funeral everybody was attending.

      • sagecreek

With all respect, just keep clingin’ to that raft.

      • Imasewsure

Hate hate white pumps and want that trend to die a fiery death but white boots are pretty kick ass… that’s a black/white trend I could get behind for sure!

        • It sounds very mod – which I like – rather than Minnie Mouse.

    • Jennifer Schiller

Love it! The shoes are a little throwaway to me, but I actually don’t mind the pop against the dark skin and dress. That’s also why I adore the lip shade; almost no one can pull that off without looking like a four-year old’s tragically over-styled Barbie but here it looks fresh, fun, and fabulous.

I’m not always as in love with her fashion choices as everyone else here, but she is stunning and I love the way this plays it up in the décolletage, but doesn’t overpower.

My only knock is the clutch which is just ehh to me. Otherwise snaps and WERQs

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Yeah, hate the skirt and the white bridal shoes. But from the waist up it’s fabulous!

    • lunchcoma

I’m going to round this one up to a WERQ. The skirt isn’t perfect, but the overall effect of the look is that it’s a knockout.

    • Totally on point, Lads.
Though I don’t share your instant hatred of the tulip skirt, it is as rare as anything may be to see one that is graceful and flattering. With such a strange shape its ALL about proportion. And this one is simply a giant arrowhead pointing to the treasure.

    • Jessica Freeman

I would vote no on the metallic purple lipstick. She’s better than that.

    • Sexy Nun.

      So, no.

    • Daisy Walker

Lipcolor is a no. I think I hate those shoes more than the tulip skirt and I LOATHE tulip skirts. Could have been amazing, but now it’s just sad.

    • MilaXX

The only think I really dislike are the white shoes. I will concede the skirt “tulips” too high up, but I’m okay with tulips skirts when they don’t go all the way up to the fine china.

    • Miranda

I hate those shoes with the heat of a thousand suns.

      • Tracy_Flick

Ha! I should have read all the comments first – I just wrote this same thing.

    • Kimbolina

I think the lip color looks great on her but wish it was with a more fun dress.

    • lexilexi

      That. Face.

      • Clueless_Jock

And only That Face can get away with That Lipstick.

      • Saturnine

        Just spectacular. Really.

    • If only this came down in a proper wrap skirt. It might look a little business-y, but at least it wouldn’t be this! The lipstick I think works for her and no one else.

    • gabbilevy

I don’t even care. I’ve categorized Lupita here with PUF faves Fan Bing Bing, BLANCHETT and The Audreybot (and maybe Zoe Saldana) among the women who can wear some seriously questionable stuff and make them sing. Give this girl her Ph.D. in dresswearing already.

      • ecallaw1977

Huh. I don’t think I would count Audreybot among the others you mentioned. She wears weird stuff, she doesn’t pull it off about half the time. I would have added Tilda, and there is somebody else that I just can’t think of right now! Crud, who is it? Another BK will have to think of it, I guess.

        • Trickytrisha

          Helena Bonham Carter?

          • ecallaw1977

Dita! That’s who I was thinking of. It always seems to me like they respect HBC’s fashion choices, but they don’t necessarily like them–I may be wrong, but that’s my take!

        • Jeremiah Capacillo

You forgot Queen Helen of Fuckingfantastica!

          • ecallaw1977

You’re right, she should definitely be on the list.

    • LeelaST

Totally agree – waist up yes, waist down no. The lip color is “Mary Kay at Play” awful. (apologies for referring to last week’s ludicrous PR challenge.)

    • shirab

Hey T and Lo, someone probably already pointed this out, or you saw it yourselves, but your assessment of L.N’o in the Miu Miu was quoted in the Sunday NY Times! I was so proud.

    • Qitkat

I love the purple lipstick on her, but it’s an extremely difficult look to pull off for most people. Generally I hate shawl collars more than tulip skirts, but Lupita is such a stunning beauty, she is making it all work for me.

    • boweryboy

Wow. She started off so strong too. My fashion love affair with her is over. I’ve had it. Officially.

No to the lip color. It does not look chic. It looks like she melted a purple crayon and smeared it on her lips.

Also: ” We’re as gay as a pink Christmas tree full of twerking turtle doves…” Pure fucking laugh out loud genius.

      • Imasewsure

I’d say give her a second chance on her second movie pole dance tour whenever it comes around. I agree about this round though… I’m done with this beauty too!

    • mmebam

Waist up WERQ, waist down WREQ…

    • Sunshine16

I love that she rocked purple lips!

    • fiddlecub

Love the lip. Absolutely love it.

    • sagecreek

Is that a teeny tiny candy cane on that clutch? Because if so, she needs to throw it toward Taylor Swift with great force.

    • decormaven

I’m OK with everything but the shoes. If a white shoe with black detailing had been employed (as was with the designer’s look), it would have been a WERQ for me.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I’m fine with the lip color, and agree with the TLo dislike of tulip skirts. They just scream “look, look, look at my crotch”.

    • RussellH88

Tulip skirts always make me want to lean in and whisper “Gurl, your skirt is stuck in your vagina.” It always looks like the fabric got trapped in a lady valley.

    • Sarah

The tulip skirt just looks like a coat. This would be a gorgeous COAT. And I think the lipstick is aight, but it would be better two shades darker.

    • paginatrix

      Not wild about this look.
Still naming all my kids Lupita.

    • Whitney Barkley

I am southern gal, raised on the knee of the former state-wide queen of the debutante ball, and all I have to say is.

“White shoes are for nurses, darlin. And women who wear those dreadful frou frou Easter dresses.”

And so it was, and so it shall be. Now and forever. Amen.

      • Erica

    • BayTampaBay

I have no problem with white shoes and a black dress but I really do not care for those white shoes with that black dress.

    • YoungSally

The tulip hem reminds me of Donna Karan’s power executive stuff from the mid-80s. Except I think those ladies wore bodysuits and tights.

    • In_Stitches

She’s pulling off the purple, but a hell no to the skirt. I think tulip skirts can work if the part is off to the side or the shape is there, but there really isn’t any extra revealed skin. It can lend interest and softness to a look.

P.S.-Love the part in the hair. It’s a subtle nod to the business wear nature of the dress.

    • girlsaturday

I look at that skirt and all I want to do is reach through time, space, and the internet and rotate it 45 degrees or so. Tulip skirts will always look to me like the wearer was in a real hurry while leaving the bathroom.

    • Shawn EH

Yes, purple is another one of her colors. Though a wine/maroon might be even better, but the nails and lips are pretty gorgeous in this stark outfit.

    • willworktomorrow

“We’re as gay as a pink Christmas tree full of twerking turtle doves…” I love you guys.

    • MoHub

She started out with so much potential, but so many of her latest efforts have been disappointing. She has lost me, I believe.

    • Janet B

Not loving the purple this time.
      Never loving the hemline.
Not loving white shoe trend in November.

    • Adriana

I think she’s one of the few women who can actually pull off the bold, out-there lip colors. BUT I don’t think it was the right choice for this dress. As for the outfit, I pretty much agree. The dress is beautiful until you get to that bizarre tulip skirt, and the shoes just look wrong.

    • Kayemwhy yo

Hate the whole look from head to toe. This dress makes her legs heavy.

    • formerlyAnon

She’s making the lipstick work and its color is lifting up the severity of the dress. Also anti-tulip skirt, but on the fence about the shoes. I’d have preferred navy or black and white to the solid white.

    • Tracy_Flick

Love the purple lipstick, mildly dislike the skirt for gyno-adjacentness, HATE the shoes with the burning fire of a thousand suns.

    • frannyprof

I agree. Tulip skirts, like belly cutouts and most sheer dress/granny panty combos, need to be banned.

    • Danielle

JESUS I love her in purple lipstick.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Girl, that’s not your (or anyone else’s) skirt. Not liking the purple lip, either. She needs more red and less blue in her tones.

    • Kelly

Nope, hate the lipstick. It looks like a color from those little kid “candy cosmetic” kits (do they still make those?) — edible play lipsticks in colors no real lipstick ever dreamed of. As for the shoes, I think all white shoes should be banned forever. They’re always focus-pulling, and they make everyone’s feet look several sizes larger than they are. Finally, if good dressing means wearing things that are suited to your particular body, then I think Ms L. should downplay her legs and focus on her torso/face/hair.

    • crash1212

Tulip skirts should be banned for the good of humankind. Not loving the purple lip, and detest white shoes with this look. Such a shame because the top half of this dress is SO dramatic and flattering.

    • marlie

I’m not a fan of the dress at ALL. Nor the shoes. I don’t love the lipcolor, but it’s ok. It works better on her than it probably would on anyone else.

    • It’s a WERQ from the waist up. From the waist down it’s a WHUT.

    • BrooklynBomber

      WREQ – I love it!
The tulipiness is exacerbated (in a bad way, a very bad way) but the white pump. And the lipstick, good Lord, it’s tragic. She’s still stunning, though.

    • Evan

Imagine if this came down in a pair of trousers, like something Janelle Monae would wear. A lady tux of sorts, but with the same top. I think it would look fabulous, but what do I know.

    • gracedarling

I actually really like the way the skirt balances out the neckline, but then, I am pretending that it’s a jacket and that she has some really chic cigarette pants underneath.

She really has a yen for terrible shoes, doesn’t she?

    • The purple lipstick is fantastic, but the shoes are unforgivable.

    • The shoes. They hurt my eyes.

    • Trickytrisha

Adore the face, including the lips. The white collar frames her beautifully. The lower half is better ignored.

One thing that has me puzzled is the choices she makes for her necklines. She seems to eschew bras therefore has no uplift in spite of wearing some very deeply decollete clothing. For me, it looks a bit odd in this dress. She wore a pink dress last week that was featured here on the 14th that has the same lack of support (and those OMG white shoes!).

Don’t misunderstand… I applaud women who are happy with their bodies as they are, but good underpinnings are clutch.

    • GeoDiva

      Hate the shoes!

    • kimmeister

The problem with tulip skirts is that they are completely non functional if you’re doing anything but standing perfectly still. Even if they come down to the ankle, the minute you sit down, they spread like eagles’ wings and the wearer is left airing out the good china.

    • River

Love the purple lipstick on her. Agreed on the skirt. Sigh.

    • Michelle Wilson

I haven’t seen purple lipstick since high school (which was a very long time ago) but she’s making it work. I love her makeup peeps for not being afraid of bright color. She always looks gorgeous.

    • conniemd

Like the purple lipstick, but not with the black and white color scheme. Agree that the skirt is tragic, particularly since the jacket part of the dress is so stunning. Prabal Gurung should have cut the dress at the bottom of the jacket and paired it with pants.

    • MsALVA

Tulip skirts do nothing but make one’s thighs look bigger than they actually are. They are evil and never flattering.

    • Eva_baby

That lip color is wonderful on her. I grew up with girls her particular shade of dark brown skin and let me tell you, those girls knew how to work some wonderful plums and purples in their make-up shades. Would not look good on anyone else.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I love her wild lip colors. Her makeup at worst has been interesting, at best it’s been some of the best makeup I’ve seen.

    • SophieCollier

My only comment is “Check out the model’s overly-shopped legs. They look like Barbie legs!”

    • MGMcD

Love the lipstick, it’s bold but it suits her coloring and highlights her magnificent smile. Otherwise, clunky white shoes ugh.

    • quiltrx

The skirt and the shoes are totally bad news.
I like the purple lip, BUT it looks iridescent, which takes me back to “Wet ‘N Wild” colors in the 80s.

    • Gatto Nero

Agree about the sins of the tulip skirt. There’s no redeeming it. White shoes are a bad choice here.
Purple lip would be great if it weren’t so *frosty*.
But the bodice of the dress frames her gorgeous face beautifully.

    • ChristySchiff

This whole thing screams “1980s networking function in a cheap hotel ballroom.” And for that, I have to say, the purple lip color is perfect.

    • Claudia

I really hate the lip colour. It looks like a colour you’d get from a Barbie makeup kit where everything tastes of strawberry and watermelon and the nail varnish peels off in one piece once dry…

    • Aurumgirl

No matter what you think of the skirt, and shoe that isn’t white would have turned this whole look around.

    • hellkell

The lipstick looks like MFE #15, and that color is fabulous.

    • Michelle Gennari

Ugh on that skirt… ugh on those shoes. She’s adorable though.

    • Hildegerd Haugen

      Wow, she is so lovely.

    • lillyvonschtupp

Forget the dress, I want that RING!

    • lillyvonschtupp

Forgive the dress. She’s been killin’ it this awards season!

    • Alloy Jane

Shame about that skirt. And the purple lip color is too “slumber party,” if you know what I mean. No to the shoes.

    • mightbewrong

Hahaha, please make ‘WREQ’ a new series on the lines of ‘GTNYD.’ That’s hilarious.

    • guest2visits

If the shoes were a killer black pair it would almost fix the fit on that skirt portion of the dress.
