Lupita Nyong’o in Cushnie et Ochs at the 2013 GQ Men Of The Year Party

Posted on November 14, 2013

We’ve reached the nitpicking stage of our style love affair with Miss Lupita.

Lupita Nyong’o attends the 2013 GQ Men Of The Year Party at The Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles, California in a Cushnie et Ochs  dress paired with Christian Louboutin pumps, a Devi Kroell clutch and Dana Rebecca Designs jewelry.

Cushnie et Ochs Pre-Dall 2013 Collection

It’s like this: Love the shape and especially the color of this dress on her. Do not love the way the cutouts are sitting on her chest. This seems to be the week for bad cutouts, because we weren’t in love with Naomie Harris’ yesterday. We’re also not in love with the shoes here. The shape and color are distracting, especially since the former makes her feet look very oddly shaped. Just not loving that curved strap across the top. And while the clutch is kind of interesting, it disappears against the rest of the outfit.

Call us nitpickers if you must. We won’t argue. But we think the combined effect of all these choices turned this from a potentially great outfit to one that looks a little awkward to our eyes.

  • Nancer

I so agree with the nits that you’ve picked!

  • ChaCha_70

I guess I haven’t reached that point yet. She looks gorgeous in my eyes.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Me too. I think the only nitpick I have is that really garish shade of lipstick she’s got on. But aside from that, I think she’s beautiful!

  • DTLAFamilies

Totally agree. And yet Dat Face is so amazing it overpowers all flaws.

  • lunchcoma

I liked it better in white and worn in the summer. As it is, it’s interesting but very Eastery for November.

    • Alloy Jane

It’s been hot this week, in the mid to high 80s in LA, so wearing something autumnal would be unflatteringly sweaty at this event.

      • lunchcoma

Oh, I wasn’t thinking long sleeves or anything like that. It’s the white shoes that seem off, and to a lesser extent the pale pink. Change the colors and I’d be fine with it.

  • Tatiana Luján

terrible shoes, but I don’t dislike the cutouts.

    • Alloy Jane

Agree, awful awful shoes but no strong negative feelings towards the cutouts. I rather love the lip color on her glorious face. The clutch is a throwaway.

    • murt

Same – the shoes are the only thing I don’t like here.

  • hughman

Maybe it’s the pink, but it’s hard for me not to look at the cut outs and see Valentine’s Day Card.

    • The Counselor

Very Valentine. Pink dress, red nails, white shoes–the classic palette of the occasion. It really makes the cutout resemble a construction paper card.

  • Miranda

I can’t stand the shoes – look like the ones the uppity women in my church wear. The color of that dress is gorgeous tho

    • Introspective

shoes are totally giving me easter sunday realness, and definitely with the pink dress it seems seasonally off and not so flattering. kinda barbie if you ask me.

but still she’s zoomed to a top spot on my irrational love list, so there’s that.

    • Vtg Fashion Library

Those shoes totally give the impression that she put them on the wrong feet.

Also, I hate those sleeves. And she needs more jewelry.

    • The shoes create an optical illusion that make her look like she’s got duck feet.

  • Judy_S

I pretty much like the cutouts, but the shoes do not work at all. (Oh, someone else already said that, thank you!).

  • Jacqueline Wessel

    Yep, I’m with you, nitpickers.

  • kimmeister

The cutouts aren’t flattering on her, and they’re a little too on the nose when they’re heart shaped, and rendered on a pink dress. All she needs to do is wear this on Valentine’s Day.

  • Mary Lauer

This dress makes me think of Elena’s from PR. The cocktail challenge.

    • jayetyler

I had the same reaction–from the shape, color, shoulder treatment, neckline, hemline and use of (albeit different) cutouts. But I liked Elena’s placement of cutouts better. Went back and looked at Elena’s; pretty similar but aside from the different cutouts, the sleeves are a little different & Elena’s has some interesting seaming around the bust.

      • Mary Lauer

Yes, I actually think Elena’s dress was more interesting! the seaming adds a lot.

  • MilaXX

I could overlook the cut outs, but the shoes are fug. Nonetheless, I still love Ms. Nyongo. She was on Craig Ferguson a few days ago and I realized I could listen to her chatting with him all night long.

  • mjude

I am over the cut outs

  • willworktomorrow

I’d love it with a black belt and sharp black pumps, and some sort of black or metallic bag. That color is gorgeous.

  • ChristySchiff

Yikes – those shoes make it look like she’s got them on the wrong feet! So odd. But I love the dress.

    • TonyGo

  • filmcricket

Cut-outs are the new sheer, aren’t they? The designers said “Oh yeah, you hate illusion netting? Well, we’re just going to give you awkward bands of flesh with no coverage at all then!” In other words, yeah, this is bad. Her face continues to stun, but that’s it.

  • The shoes are definitely my main problem. The really make her feet look weird, and are too distracting when you combine ’em with the cutouts.

  • I’m kinda ok with those cut-outs – and I usually hate cut outs – but those shoes really don’t go with this dress.

    Make-up is *spectacular*

  • Clueless_Jock

    Cute though.

  • SewingSiren

The cut outs are too low, even on the model. Otherwise it is a very sweet look on her.

  • In_Stitches

It’s an ‘almost’. The lines of the cut-outs fight with the lines of her bosom and the shoes are purse are a let down.

    The lip is killer though.

  • kittenwithaquip

I’m over cut-outs in general, and this one hits here in a weird, unflattering place. She’s so beautiful, with an enviable figure, but the cut-out hits her chest in such a way that it makes her breasts look…unsupported. (If I write “saggy” the anonymous down-voters will ding me, but saggy-looking tits can happen to anyone.)

The shoes seem really severe, and I agree that it’s as if all of the curves in her outfit are distracting. They lead my eyes off of her gorgeousness.

  • Leah Elzinga

plus that shoulder treatment is weird. Whoever her makeup gays are though, they now their shit; it’s always so pretty and complimentary without defaulting to expected or matchy.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

With a face like that, who looks at the clothing, anyway?

  • mmebam

It needs a belt, different shoes, and a contrasting clutch.

  • MoHub

Those cutouts make her look exceptionally saggy, and I’m sure she’s not.

    • conniemd

Yeah, the cutoffs did something odd with her boobs. No question. And it definitely is a tad too tight across the hips, as the fabric is pulling.

  • Sam Smith

I actually hate the pink and the dress looks so stiff.

  • Angela_the_Librarian

I think this would have looked better in a different color (maybe navy blue). As is she looks like a human valentine.

  • KT

All I see are lungs. And the Roxy logo.

  • Monabel

I think the color is a bold choice, which works for me. The cut-outs, on the other hand are heinous.

  • The makeup and jewellery are flawless again, but I am totally on board with those nits to pick.

  • I don’t care if those are Christian Louboutin’s, I bought those shoes at JC Penney in 1996 in Idaho. Ugly then, ugly now.

    • sagecreek

Yep. I was thinking Thom McCann, but same diff.

  • RedRaven617

This dress read as varying shades of pink in the photos on my computer. Not even close to white, except the shoes.

    • Yeah – whichever service provided the captions for that picture doesn’t have use of their eyes. Definitely pink!

  • boweryboy

Oh nos. My love affair with her style is falling fast, and she started off so strong too. I don’t like this at all. Maybe she got a new stylist?

The color is lovely against her skin, but the shoulder pads make her look like a linebacker. The cutouts are tacky. I hate the clutch. And I get what she was trying with the shoes, playing them off the cutouts, but they look like they’re on the wrong feet.

  • sagecreek

I’m firmly on Team Lupita, but this gets a 100% OUT from me. Hate the color of the dress, hate the cutouts, and I loathe those shoes with the fiery passion of 1000 suns.

  • az67

Love the color on her. But those shoes belong on a cloven-footed goat in the Andes.

  • Garcia Loca

Girl is gorgeous, but she needs to give that sternum a break. Just for variety’s sake, if for no other reason.

  • 3boysful

She’s lovely, and I like the color on her (but perhaps not for November), but it’s not attractive the way the dress is pulling. Afraid it’s a wee bit too tight, which is also not flattering to her bust.

  • Lilithcat

    The shoes don’t help, either.

  • marlie

I like the dress and the cutouts don’t bother me, but I think the shoe color is all wrong for her. Also, her makeup looks pretty. SO much better than the brown lip she was sporting a few days ago.

  • Trickytrisha

Dang, she looks like she’s directing traffic with her feet.

  • Gatto Nero

Agree about the cutouts and the awful shoes. I would like to see her in a warmer color. The silhouette (minus the linebacker shoulders) is nice on her, though.
And she is *so* gorgeous and has those fabulous, toned arms.
And she was charming as hell on Craig Ferguson recently.

  • formerlyAnon

I’m neutral on the cutouts, but with you on the shoes. A pale skinned gal might get away with that swoop across the foot, but it stands out so well on her that her feet look lopsided.

  • Victoria Anzalone

The shoes do look wonky, but that is some beautiful hair and makeup, and she makes the color of that dress sing!

  • nannypoo

As beautiful as she is, she does not have the right type of cleavage for this dress and she needs a bra. The shoes look like they’re on the opposite feet.

  • SugarSnap108

I don’t think you’re nitpicking. I actually don’t like the dress at all. Too cutesy with the pink and the cut-outs. And the shoes do make her feet look odd. But whatever — she’s gorgeous.

  • ashtangajunkie

Love the colour on her – I don’t mind the cutouts, but those shoes are hideous. As always, love her makeup.

  • I love the shoes, but agree about the cutouts and the purse. I also feel like there may have been a better lip color for this look.

  • I think those are the only white shoes I’ve ever liked, not that they necessarily go with that dress.

  • lillyvonschtupp

Those are total Silkstone Barbie shoes. But she’s my newest girlcrush, so I forgive her.

  • I think she put those shoes on the wrong feet. Think about it. If she switched the left and right, I think they wouldn’t look so awkward.

  • Qitkat

It’s not a bad dress, and it’s nice to see a true pink utilized, but granted somehow it feels awkward. She does have the right figure for it, as it would not flatter a larger busted woman. Such a gorgeous face.

  • Laurie Landry

Weird. Those shoes look like the should be on the opposite feet.

    • quiltrx

THIS. The straps are curving the wrong direction from what we’ve seen our whole lives. Also, if I can see the entire joint where your big toe joins your foot, those shoes aren’t covering enough.

  • She is so pretty!

  • LaSylphide

Nothing about this works for me. Anything that draws attention from that incredible face is an automatic problem, and the upper half of the dress is just too fussy. She should keep everything from the chin down simple and elegant and just let us feast on her beauty.

  • Candice Booth

    The face flawless and alive!!!!!!!!!!!
    Shoes not so much.

  • fursa_saida

I think if she just changed the shoes I would like this 100% more.

  • livesarah

Cushnie et Ochs just make some pretty bad dresses. Bad cutouts abound these days but it really seems to be a hallmark of that brand…

  • valerie747

Imagine this pretty dress paired with a deep plum-colored suede shoe. Bliss.

  • AmeliaEve

Match or not match. There is no try.

  • Tracy_Flick

Wow, those shoes make it look like her feet have switched places. What a disorienting effect.

  • LadyLuck777

I just think the shoes are not for her. They make it look like her ankles are broken.

  • E. D.

Don’t mind the cutouts, but HATE the shoes.

  • Zizi_N

I’d have gone with a pair of nude CL Pigalles to bring this outfit home. Aside from the church shoes – she looks absolutely stunning.
