Lizzy Caplan at the 2013 Saban Community Clinic Dinner Gala

Posted on November 27, 2013

We’re not loving this look at all. Could it be that this dress is… For Models Only?

“Masters of Sex” star Lizzy Caplan attends the Saban Community Clinic 37th Annual Dinner Gala in Beverly Hills, California in a Reem Acra dress paired with Aldo sandals and a Rauwolf clutch.

Maybe. But Lizzy could have done herself some favors here. For one, we think it looks a lot fresher with the sleeves as they appear on the runway, rather than these flimsy bat wings. And we also think those shoes are too heavy and strappy for such a flimsy, floaty dress. But man, do we ever hate that hem. And the beading looks heavy and overdone.

And yet, we love it on the runway. We suppose that answers the question, then. Total FMO dress.

She needs a hair consult, yes?

It looks like the sleeves are still there, she’s just not wearing it that way. She should be.

      • Rand Ortega

THAT’S what made my eye twitch. She’s wearing the sleeves so they look like a cape, whereas the model wears the sleeves by putting the arms through both holes.

        • Coolekat

Thank you so much for explaining. I couldn’t “see” what was wrong until you said it.

    • International Model

I would hate to be at this dinner and be sitting next to Lizzy and Emmy. I’d probably call them both Krysten.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Did the model get the hairdresser really angry at her before the show?

      • tereliz

I think all the models’s heads looked like this. It really went well with the “Last Days of Disco” vibe the collection had, IMO. Something Lizzy needs an injection of in her styling , STAT!

I think we need a new designation: FFBO (For Fierce Bitches Only). Because I think this dress could be saved by someone willing to add a little fierceness to the whole affair.

      • RebeccaKW

Thank you. Agreed. It needs not-casual hair and some better shoes and someone wearing the dress properly and then with an attitude, as opposed to just standing there holding her hands in front of her, gripping that clutch that looks like soap.

    • jilly_d

Nope, I hate both incarnations of this dress equally.

    • bellafigura1

I love her makeup, her coloring is perfect.

    • decormaven

Should have stuck to the sleeves as depicted in the runway look. That’s a key part of the visual interest of the dress. The shoes also are a wrong choice. The fact that utterly forgettable jewelry was paired with all of this just makes for a ho-hum look.

      • ballerinawithagun

Great movie! Send this to Cher, Michelle or Susan! You are spectacular!

    • visceral response

I think the dress could have worked because Lizzy’s a beautiful woman with unusual features but she really needs to figure out what to do with her hair. On the one hand, I applaud her for eschewing extensions on the other, the corporate bob tends to distract from whatever fabulous dress she’s wearing.

And the non-red-carpet shoes don’t help.

      • ballerinawithagun

You are so right. This requires big disco hair! I hate the spaniel extensions.

    • LeelaST

When in doubt, take the advice of Edna Mode from The Incredibles “No Capes!”

    • NoveltyRocker

It looks like there might be a pretty decent dress underneath all that flimsy top layer. Then I’d put her hair up to further rid of the flimsy. Then I’d ask to see that clutch because it reminds me of a real life Zelda gem.

    • alyce1213

      NO. A whole lotta no.

    • ballerinawithagun

I don’t think it is FMO but needs a runway of movement to show it off. Let’s go dancing!

    • MilaXX

I don’t think it’s FMO, but its certainly for someone with a higher level of fashionista skills than Lizzie. I could see Kelly Rowland rocking this.

    • uprightcitizen

This is a costume from American Horror Story: Coven, right? They showed it to Jessica Lange, but she thought it was too busy, so Sarah Paulson is now going to wear it because the blind girl must look tragic from now on?

    • Anastasia

Some silver pumps would have drastically changed the look. Any other shoe but that atrocity. And THAT HEM.

    • ReadBarbara

is it a cape? is it a moth-eaten shawl? were they supposed to be sleeves but she was running late, pulled the dress off the sewing machine and said “oh, close enough!”

    • formerlyAnon

It’s not her dress, AT ALL. I do hope she isn’t *paying* somebody actual cash money to dress her in such a thing. Her hair isn’t helping. Like the clutch, though.

    • Tatiana Luján

She changed the hem and the sleeves and there are the mistakes.

    • KT

I don’t think this is FMO, in fact I actually think this would totally work if she lopped off all the excess netting — from both her arms and her hem — and owned the look a little more, as she’s kind of cowering under those shoulder-hose. A shoe change would also help, but I think the beading is actually pretty gorgeous. Come on Lizzy, shed that cocoon and bring out the fierce bitch in houndstooth we saw the other day.

    • crash1212

She did indeed make a huge mistake by not wearing the sleeves like the model…looks like a sheer capelet type of deal happening there. Not good. Man does she need a hair consult….STAT!

    • msdamselfly

      That runway hair is fabulous

    • tereliz

Ugh, WHY isn’t she wearing the sleeves??!!?!?! That’s the only really cool part of the dress. And she needs a shinier lip and disco-ier hair. I know she does a period show and probably can’t change her hair too drastically because of that, but something sleeker and less staid was called for with this dress.

    • rondele

I cannot get over her wearing those horrible clunky shoes with such a gossamer dress. She’s a striking looking woman, but the first thing I saw was those shoes. The whole look has potential, but it doesn’t work as it is. Full length mirror, o.k.?

    • MinAgain

This is just a bad dress.

    • CatherineRhodes

The dress is dreadful. Third tier PR.

    • ShaoLinKitten

The sleeves should go entirely. Shoes all wrong. The hair is her trademark but could use an update.

    • lifeisastory

I don’t like anything about this. Beyond that, why is it so sparkly on the model and so dull on this chick?

    • Katesymae

Frumpy and stumpy – a winning combination!

    • crystal76

I thought I was seeing another dress…I had to scroll back on forth! I love the one the runway, on her, it just looks awful!

    • Diego!

I like the way this dress looks on her. Instead of a new hairstylist, I’d recommend hiring a new make up artist. She’s been wearing the same make up over and over again for the past 10 years. It’s time to let it go

    • Aurumgirl

I think the dress is really ugly on the model, too. It’s just nobody’s friend.

    • Dagney

Or…for no one. I don’t even like it on the model. It’s an ugly dress. I don’t even Cate and Tilda could work that. I have to wonder, do designers not realize how silly applique can look? Anyone could make a quick run to Yardage Town for some black plastic-y looking crap, glue it on a Morticia costume and produce the same effect.

    • ThesisMonkey

She didn’t get the memo on the sleeves and the belt, apparently.

    • Imasewsure

Hate the dress (FMO). Hate the hair… hate hate the shoes….and I’d throw the clutch (how about throwing it at her stylists for instance)

    • Lilyana_F

The sleeves really look unfortunate that way… ruins the whole look for me.

    • heuristicvalue

Love her and think she is gorgeous, but her bangs are always terrible. She is rich and famous, why won’t someone fix them!?

    • jif

Not Even For Models. The sort of dress you might look beautiful in spite of.

    • paginatrix

Why does everyone suddenly have Secretary Hair?

    • greenwich_matron

      slutty nun

      • LambeeBaby

I thought slutty librarian. It looks like a pretend cardigan drapped over her shoulders. Unfortunately there is nowhere to tuck a handkerchief.

    • Gatto Nero

So tired of these naked dresses with strategically placed elements over the naughty bits. It has become such a predictable look.
Aside from the sleeves observation, the dress is too long for her and the clumky sandals cut her legs off, making them look stumpy.
The dress also needs the belt to mask that unfinished, elasticated-waist look.
She can do better than this. Someone help her.

    • Sweetvegan

Well, the problem is that this dress doesn’t fit her. The dress was made for someone 6 inches taller, which is why the hem is too long and the sleeves would’ve looked even weirder if she had put them on properly. I don’t understand why designers loan dresses to celebs without altering them to fit the celeb. – which is why SJP always looks like she’s standing in a pool of fabric in a gown that is 6 inches too long.

    • pdquick

Please, someone! Do something about her hair!

    • Erica_Vuitton

I get the feeling the sleeves are the same as the runway version, she just didn’t know to put her arms through them.
