Lady Gaga at H&M Store Opening and Ribbon Cutting at Times Square

Posted on November 15, 2013

Did she and Miley make a pact that they would both tone it the hell down on the same day?

Because this is toned the hell down for Steffi:

Lady Gaga attends the ribbon cutting for the grand opening of the Epic H&M Store at Times Square in New York City. Lady Gaga is wearing a customized piece from the H&M Conscious collection.

She’s not barefoot, crying in public, or covered in a fine white powder. And her wig doesn’t look like she pulled it out from under her bed.  The outfit looks like it belongs in the costume department of The Carrie Diaries (which is not necessarily a compliment), but she looks good overall. As we said with the Miley post, sometimes you need to know when to pull back on the crazy reins.

At least she kept the crazy shoes. Otherwise I might not have known it was her.

      • 3boysful

        LOVE the shoes.

        Kidding. They’re heinous.

    • http://www.what-the-frock.com Dana WhatTheFrock

I hate to make a trite “_____ called, they want their ______ back joke,” but Nicki Minaj called, she wants her outfit back.

      • ampg

Well, I was going to say “Christina Aguilera called, she wants her hair back.” So don’t feel too bad. :)

        • Renaissance_Man_ATL

I thought it was Courtney Love’s old wig. :)

      • Mismarker

I enjoy a well deployed “________ called, they want their _______ back” joke. Be not afraid.

      • jif

Nicki would have made it work.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Weird, doesn’t look like her in the face. Anyone going to watch her on SNL tomorrow?

      • ashtangajunkie

Considering it, but that “applause applause applause” song gets stuck in my head for DAYS. Endless, tortuous days.

        • YoungSally

I guess it’s not the Bonnie Franklin – Applause! Applause! – that we’re waiting for.

          • PeaceBang

            Thank you for invoking.

        • Janice Bartels

Every time that song plays in my car, I misread it on my radio display as “applesauce”. I might have even created new lyrics. Which I sing with my kids.

      • Shawn EH

Of course, host AND musical guest; hopefully it’ll be Miley pt. 2!

      • MilaXX

        nope

        • Evan

She can be pretty funny though. At least she was the other times she was on SNL.

          • MilaXX

I don’t find SNL funny anymore. The one half way funny ep or good musical guest doesn’t warrant me staying up late. I just check twitter and find the on or 2 good bits on youtube the next day.

            • Evan

Yeah SNL isn’t what it used to be.

            • Lauren Hall

Actually I have thought this season is pretty funny so far! The Kerry Washington episode was fantastic and funny in general- NOT just compared to current SNL

            • NYCGlamourpuss

I watched most of it last night, and she was pretty funny! She was funny the other times she was on, so I figured she could do it again.

      • Mismarker

        I’ll be watching. You?

        • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Not sure. I gave up on SNL years ago and only pop in for special folks. I don’t consider her to be one of my special folks, but I am curious to see how she does in the skits, much more so than her musical acts. Most people sound like shit on SNL because that studio is not equipped to bring out the best in vocals.

          • Mismarker

I’ve been watching SNL since the early 80s and, despite general public opinion that it’s gone downhill, I’m still watching. I think Gaga will be a good host. She’s willing to make fun of herself and she’s creative. Good jumping-off point. That all being said, the Miley episode is still unwatched and mouldering on my DVR.

            • rebeemoon

The Miley episode was actually stellar. Especially the video spoof of her song, “We Can’t Stop.” Parodied the government shutdown, and called, “We DID stop.” She played Michelle Bachmann, and Taran Killam did a killer John Boehner.

      • SorayaS

Can’t comment on SNL as I’m not in the US but I think the bangs are what is making her face look so different here.

        • vidacelina

          also plastic surgery

    • Danielle

Still bitter that H&M does not have any locations in Oklahoma. -.-

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

The quality is shite & customer service abysmal. Don’t be bitter!

        • Jacob Bowen

See for the price I pay ($10 for a basic cardigan) I am NEVER disappointed in H&M’s quality, because let’s be honest, it’s mall clothing, and I am not expecting everything to last forever. But, they have cute clothes that don’t break my bank. And, ours has GREAT customer service, they are always extremely helpful and a few of the cute boys will fetch me sizes.

    • ashtangajunkie

She looks weird when she looks normal, if that makes sense.

      • NOLA_gal

I was just thinking the same thing.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I am having a Benetton flashback nightmare.

    • hughman

“Oh my gawd, am I high? These scissors look so big. Is it art? Where is my egg? JeffKoons JeffKoons Jeffkoons.”

      • boweryboy

This made me laugh out loud – not LOL – for reals.

      • JDreesen

twenty bucks says those are her own scissors.

        • NYCGlamourpuss

          Haaaaaaa!!

        • Little_Olive

Of course -how else would you tame that hair.

    • Shawn EH

She’s gotta stump for the new album this week, so likability is in!

    • lobsterlen

Not crazy about that reading rainbow jumpsuit but I have never seen her look her age before. She always somehow looks older.

    • Alfie C

I actually like this. It looks a little Nicki Minaj lite, but still. This looks like the “ARTPOP” look she’s been going for – and misfiring wildly on- while looking a little wearable and cute. Its nice.

    • histrogeek

You need to pull back the crazy reins if someone is going to give a giant pair of scissors.

    • Mori Rene

ahhh she looks a billion times better like this. it’s fun without as much… idk, rolling in a bin of flour.

    • 3boysful

I was going to ask if she’s ever worn H&M, so of course she had to here, but also of course it’s “customized.” That would be a great “costume” challenge for her: dress as a real H&M customer.

And we just got ours in Charlotte yesterday.

    • lunchcoma

This is almost okay. She’s wearing makeup that makes her look like a person, and the jumpsuit is not for most but works well enough on her.

I just wish she’d get over those hobble shoes.

      • NYCGlamourpuss

I know, I hate the hobble shoes too.

    • MilaXX

      Still over both of them.

    • alyce1213

Well, she looks like nice and happy, not all creepy and pretentious. The jumpsuit’s pretty ugly, the wig is silly, and the shoes are ridic. So a dialed back “of course.”

    • sagecreek

Seeing her thumbnail right next to Jennifer Lawrence makes it clear, at least for me — Steffi’s the past.

      • Jacob Bowen

Ick…Jennifer Lawrence is going to be in the past VERY soon if she doesn’t ditch Dior. The only thing good about JLaw’s thumbnail is her hair, that dress is AWFUL.

    • Kathy

Everything you said, and I’m glad she lost those weird contact lenses for the nonce.

    • Tanya Wade

Just a tiny touch of Valerie Perrine realness. I am managing not to hate her. This is a start?

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

She needs to use those scissors on that wig. In fact, on ALL her wigs.

    • MK03

She’s not covered in flour and raffia!! IT’S A MIRACLE!!

    • Vickiefantastico

I find it so sad that this is considered “to pull back on the crazy reins.”

    • http://skreened.com/bkcentral Sarah

Wig is smooth! So refreshing. Rest of outfit: eh I don’t give a damn.

    • nowlo

The Taylor Swift wig and wide-eyed grin made me snort a little. I definitely prefer silly Gaga to dreary Gaga.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1234087433 Jen Freeman

Why does she always wear a wig? Is her real hair that bad? Did she kill it by doing wig-only hairstyles with real hair, and now has to wear terrible cheap wigs to cover her balding, tortured scalp?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

She needs to look normal in the face more often. It’s nicer to look at that way. She toned it down for the art show she had in.. Brooklyn? Bronx? The other day… while trying on a jetpack-powered dress.

      • Erica_Vuitton

        Volantis! So cool.

    • Julie Ree

Maybe she is dressed for a Lonely Island sequel to “Three Way”. She is going to be on SNL. Shrug.

    • Erica_Vuitton

Ahhh the ARTPOP cover wig finally! Love this!

    • somebody blonde

She looks vaguely like Rebel Wilson in the face. It’s a good look for her.

    • birdwithonefeather

What if the wig was just a giant fro?

Also: Saved by the Bell Barbie.

    • decormaven

I’m getting a flashback to Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know” video with that paint-splashed outfit. The boots are one step away from orbit.

    • nannypoo

      She has a beautiful face.

    • Zubair Ghumro

I want to sincerely know how can someone walk in those shoes???

      • Lori

No one can. That’s why she had to have hip surgery earlier this year.

        • Zubair Ghumro

Really? I didn’t know. So is she testing out if the surgery was success by wearing such demonic shoes or getting ready for a new one? Is she gonna make it into an annual affair?

          • Lori

IDK. I just know that if I had had to have hip surgery I’d give up the skyscraper shoes, but Gaga and I obviously have different approaches to a lot of things.

            • Zubair Ghumro

I’ll prefer sense over “skyscraper shoes” (I like that title) any day of the year.

    • madscntst

Her body guards in that first picture do not look pleased with her outfit choice.

    • madscntst

Seriously, if she fell down while wearing those shoes, would be she able to get up on her own? I picture her on her back, extremities waving in the air like an overturned turtle, yelling “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!”

      • sagecreek

From your lips to God’s ears :)

    • cakecakecake

anyone else think her face looks different? nose?

    • Adrianna Grężak

Those shoes are ridiculous, but I’m happy to see her in a better wig for once

    • Meg0GayGuys6

I’m confused. Is she opening the H&M? Aren’t you supposed to wear stuff you can buy there? I’m not always 100% into H&M, but I’m guessing they don’t sell that shit she’s wearing.

      • JDreesen

hmm…says it’s a customized piece from their collection. so….no, they likely aren’t selling it. but it is H&M, even if only in one of those “in theory not practice” kind of ways.

    • cocohall

Girl is trying to bring back the chopine: “shoes on platforms that frequently rose to heights of 30 inches or more . . .Two
servants were required to steady the wearer of such ridiculously impractical shoes, but women wore them proudly – despite the derisive laughter of tourists who flocked to Venice just to see these living statues on their towering pedestals. – from SHOES by Linda O’Keeffe. Okay Steffi, we get it. You are making an important historical fashion reference. So game over. You win. Now go home.

    • Wowitsemily

It’s House Painting Fetish Shoe Barbie!

    • boweryboy

I think she and Miley are finally as exhausted by their recent shenanigans as we are.

    • BrooklynBomber

Geez, that outfit reminds me a lot of T-shirts I helped my friend (who is now a successful menswear designer) paint to sell at Charivari in the ’80s.

    • quiltrx

That jumpsuit is pretty fun–still very her, but a little less batshit insane.
Something about the face and the wig…I’m getting an odd Shelley Duvall vibe.

    • Kortney Greer

incredible this THIS is “pulling back on the crazy reigns”

    • unbornfawn

It looks like an outfit from last night’s Project Runway Allstar’s unconventional challenge.

    • Jumpingjacks

she does look high as a kite though

    • d4divine

She looks relatively normal…those shoes? I think a lot of height challenged women would attempt them if they could travel everywhere in a luxury SUV and have a cadre of body guards to break their fall. As for SNL…I will watch because behind all the craziness, Lady Gaga is a talented musician and performer.

      • Munchkn

I’m a height challenged woman and I would not wear those shoes at all. I’d not look a bit taller; just like I had no sense.

    • spooki

Those shoes just do not look good with this outfit at all. I know she loves them but they’re ugly and throw off the look. Wish she went for a brighter lip too. The jumpsuit is fun and colorful and she could’ve done so much more with it. I think she just gave up.

    • DailyDose

I guess she has just helped to paint the classroom wall at Kid’s Craft Center.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I’d like to report a fashion crime! Arts & Crafts Barbie stole Fetish Barbie’s shoes!

    • Spoilers!

Call me crazy, but in a few of those pictures she looks a little like late 90s Sarah Michelle Gellar…especially in the 5th picture.

    • Saturnine

She should smile more often. She looks like a happy little kid.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

Oh hey this was right next to where I work. I thought about sticking around to have a front-row seat, but I knew TLo would cover it. <3 <3

    • NYCGlamourpuss

She looks good! I would have put her in different shoes, but since it’s Gaga, I’m not sure exactly what to suggest. But other than that, I think she looks really good.

    • Orange Girl

Why are her wigs so bad? Serious question.

      • XPT

She clearly can afford better wigs and makeup, so it must be some kind of inside joke, like “see, I’m in drag and it’s obvious!”

    • MannahattaMamma

I just imagine that it must be exhausting to be always having to INVENT and PUSH THE ENVELOPE and dress in the equivalent of ALL CAPS ALL THE TIME. Whew.

    • guest2visits

It looks like she dressed specifically for the giant scissors she would be holding – a kid’s art project of construction paper and paint. :) It works for Gaga. I think I heard she had the black jumpsuit completely covered in paint.

    • Judy_J

I still don’t see how anyone can walk around in shoes like those.

    • Erica Woods Tucker

I get a pain in my lady parts when I look at her shoes.

    • PeaceBang

True, it doesn’t look like she pulled her wig out from under the bed, but it does look like she pulled the wig out from under a friend’s bed. WHYfore the terrible distracting wigs, Miss Gaga?

    • julnyes

I prefer the crying London ghost fest we previously experienced, but the wig is a huge improvement.

I thought she was hilarious on Saturday Night Live last weekend.
