Kiernan Shipka in Miu Miu at the “Catching Fire” LA Premiere

Posted on November 19, 2013

There’s a reason we’re always telling the young ones to dress young and not be in such a rush to wear the grownup clothes. It’s because you can totally get away with wearing something like this:

“Mad Men” star Kiernan Shipka attends the premiere of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” in Los Angeles in a Miu Miu ensemble paired with Jimmy Choo pumps.

Adorable.

Unfortunately, so few understand the short window in your life when you can make things like this work to their best effect. We’re not saying someone older can’t look good in this or make it work, but you’d need to be a Chloe Sevigny or Zooey Deschanel to pull it off; someone with real quirkiness and/or style. And even then, we don’t think it’d look as good as it does here, on Kiernan.

We really disagree with the shoe choice. She’s too young for such serious-looking shoes and besides, they don’t go with the outfit at all. A little surprised by the choice, to be honest.

You’re right, Uncles. Kiernan should just slide those shoes over to me. They would look delightful with my work outfit.

      • marlie

        JUST thinking the same thing…

        • Not applicable

me too- I have some black pants that would offset these nicely…

    • gabbilevy

I dunno, I like the shoes. Sure they’re serious, but I think they work. She’s adorable.

      • Darren Nesbitt

I agree. For some reason I see her as a “serious” 14 year old actress. Does that make sense? I think these shoes work for her but the brown color is weird.

        • Alloy Jane

Yeah, I get that from her too. She may be a child, but she is a professional and she carries herself as such, hence, the big girl business shoes.

      • murt

        I like them too.

    • MW

Hate the shoes, love the rest.

    • Kathy

She looks age-appropriate flirty and genuinely happy. Excellent.

    • MilaXX

I like the shoe. I think they work. A black pair may have ended up being too serious and a colored pair too matchy. These are neutral enough to coordinate, but not too busy to pull focus.

      • Jessica Freeman

I kinda feel like this that weird ass white strap across the top of the foot that ruins the shoe.

        • YoungSally

          Looks like a rubber band.

      • A Shiny O’Connor

It’s a great shoe but too mature for her. Arms out, toes out. It’s LA in November. She easily could have worn a block-heeled sandal.

    • Janet B

      So very sweet.

      The shoes are a mistep

      • CakesOnAPlane

        …pun intended?

    • nannypoo

I like the shoes, but not for her or her outfit. They’re too old and too serious. She is adorable and I love the outfit.

    • mjude

      I should have such style….sigh

    • Jessica Freeman

The shoes are Too Serious for this outfit. Otherwise, as usual, this girl has got it all right.

    • Sarah

I like her eye makeup! It is very cute. (Outfit is adorable, of course.) Shoes would be better with a round toe, maybe? I think they just look too pointy and severe for a kid.

    • SylviaFowler

She looks more and more like the young Dick Whitman actor all the time. Excellent casting.

      • fursa_saida

I just really want her and Emma Watson to play sisters.

    • marlie

I’m not in love with the romper thing, but I LOVE her shoes, and want them now.

      Wow… I covet a 14 year old’s shoes. :P

      • MoHub

Kiernan may be 14, but those are not a 14-year-old’s shoes.

    • MoHub

Glad you said what you did about the shoes, uncles. No one that young should be in such a hurry to destroy her feet in that kind of footwear. Besides, the shoes compromise the age-appropriateness of the main outfit.

    • Mrs. Julien

They may not have been the right choice for the dress, but I LOVE those shoes.

    • Angela_the_Librarian

Very cute, but I agree about the shoes. I also think she has a whole career ahead of her of wearing really uncomfortable shoes, so she should save her feet while she’s young!

Also, did anyone else see that she’s going to be in the Lifetime remake of Flowers in the Attic ? I remember the original movie and know the general plot of the novel, so my first reaction seeing her was “No, Kiernan, No!” It’s good for her to branch out from Mad Men, but Flowers is just such an icky story :-p

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

She’s going to be shagging her brother? Oh honey no.

    • teensmom99

Actually, she’s been heading in that shoe direction . . . and they are wrong.

    • schadenfreudelicious

      Her eyebrows are glorious…

    • kt

I’m on board with the shoe as her style tends to lean towards infant elegance vs quirky or cutesy. The shoes take the outfit to chic vs a costume or “look”, crazy shoes would be fun, but crazy is not her bag.

    • crash1212

This is SO cute and chic. I’m actually a fan of the shoe choice – the shoes in general are kick ass – and I think the deployment here was the whole nude shoe but ratcheted up a notch, of which I heartily approve.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I want to see this with a pair of chunky red sandals

    • Darren Nesbitt

The shoes do look well thought out though. The top black strap says = Serious actress. Yet the middle light colored strap says = I’m aware of my innocence and youth.

    • mommyca

She looks so adorable! and I disagree, the shoes are great!

    • kimmeister

I would’ve liked this better with, say, green slingback espadrilles.

    • ashtangajunkie

I always love her makeup – pretty, but never too much. This outfit is completely adorable.

    • Anne

She is so fabulous. I would wear that in a heartbeat if it were a little longer and maybe not quite so flared in the skirt.

    • Adrianna Grężak

I agree about the shoes, I wish she was wearing a cute pair of flats

    • MaggieMae

Beautiful. The shoes look very grown-up, in contrast to the dress. Was that the point?

    • cocohall

The tricolor shoes and the tricolor hair are activating my OCD this morning. Are we supposed to match our shoes to our hair? Is that a thing? Maybe it is the lighting, but her brows have no relationship to either of the colors of hair on her head. But the dress is very very cute and age appropriate. Plus she has good posture and radiant smile. Well done, little one.

    • R.A.

She is just amazing… style beyond her years. Does anyone else follow her on Tumblr? She’s super cute.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Love the shoes, and I am so not a shoe person.

Well lets, see, the way this whole thing has played out, OF COURSE someone one not even in the movie looks better at a premier than most of the lady stars have managed.

      • altalinda

Thank you for answering the question I was about to blurt out — is she in this movie? I might have to go.

    • Julie

Kiernan Shipka was made to wear miu miu rompers. Fact.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Is this a skirt or skort? I love it enough on her that it doesn’t even matter.

    • Victoria Anzalone

They may not be the best for this outfit, but I WANT THOSE SHOES.

      • BKagainwiththesweatpants

You’ll have to fight me for them. En garde!

    • Sonia Perez

So pleased to see her growing so beautifully!

    • KinoEye

Y’know, TLo, you were right when y’all said she really does look like the child of January Jones and Jon Hamm. In that last picture, she’s serving serious Don Draper side eye. Love the dress, eyebrows, hair and her.

    • Qitkat

The shoes surprised me too, but in a good way. They appear to fit, the heel is not too high to damage young feet, and they are cute and neutral in a new way.
I am also unreasonably pleased that designers are embracing embellishments more lately (it seems to me) without getting into twee territory. Kiernan is delightful here.

      • Judy_J

        I am in complete agreement.

      • sagecreek

Yep. Too me, the shoes keep the whole look from twee-land.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Her smile alone deserves a WERQ. :)

    • alyce1213

The dress is sweet, the embellishment is charming and makes it special, and I love (WANT) the shoes.

    • jilly_d

So cute. Now Kiernan, those shoes don’t go, so I’m going to ask you to hand them over to me, so I can wear them every day for the rest of my life.

    • PastryGoddess

I agree with everything said. I’m just posting because
      FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC!!!

    • Alfred Cox

She looks fine. No big whoop. Miu Miu suits her, but for me its Sally Draper in another cute dress. Its fine.

    • Not applicable

      her feet are growing!

    • Not applicable

she is so sweet and adorable. She is bound to be 100% stunning one day. Bless them for understanding this and not rushing her… we are all enjoying watching her grow up this way and feel even more endeared to her.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Yeah, the shoe choice is completely wrong, no matter what the age. I’m not crazy about the dress, but that’s just me – it’s not her at all, I’m just not loving the actual garment.

    • A Shiny O’Connor

Agree on the shoes. Way too chic business woman. They look like something Tilda Swinton wore in ‘Female Perversions’.

    • TLJezebel

Love the dress, but I think it’s a tad casual for a premiere.

      • alyce1213

Generally, if it’s not someone’s movie they’re not required to put on the dog and they dress a lot more casually.

    • oat327

I still kills me how much she looks like the actual biological child of Jon Hamm and January Jones.

    • Michelle Gennari

This child has an amazing sense of style. She always looks lovely! And yeah, the shoes work for me. She’s just adorable!

    • msdamselfly

Totally agree. Great outfit but the shoes are not to be taken seriously on someone her age

    • Jacqueline Wessel

I love the embellishments on the dress and they are very girlie and good for this girl.

    • LaSylphide

      Awwwwww…

    • melanie0866

      Agree totally.

I’m sure you all were just waiting for my affirmation.

      • Trickytrisha

        Yes. Yes, we were. :)

And I Agree totally as well.

    • Alloy Jane

Charming. I don’t hate the shoes, oddly enough. And I normally hate the shoes. And I would totally wear that dress. Romper? I can’t tell if those are shorts or not. Anywho, I love it.

    • Ann VerWiebe

She’s going to be so sad when she can’t wear pretty dresses like this anymore. Of course, by then she’ll be Angelina Jolie.

    • Therese Bohn

Sweet Kiernan gives me hope for her generation. (But I’ll miss her practical, but stylish, little flats if this is her new thing.) Love the collar.

    • ThaliaMenninger

Love love love. Everything but the shoes.

    • princessricky

gah why is the best dressed person at this red carpet a 13 year girl? adorbs

    • EEKstl

Has this darling EVER put a foot wrong on the RC? Flawless. (And actually, I love the shoes).

    • amanda siegelson

the shoes totally rock. you guys couldn’t be more wrong, in my opinion. of course, i agree with almost every style choice kiernan makes.

    • Swiftlytiltingplanet

I love the shoes. I love the outfit. I’m just not sure about the two of them together.

On the other hand, she is so lovely, does it even matter?

    • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

I’d wear the shoes — but I am in my 40s. Adorable dress for a young ‘un.

      • J. Preposterice

jimmy choo, huh. *noodles around* ah-hah. well. $695. sure. my shoe budget can…totally not stretch to that at ALL. (they are the “Typhoon Bicolor Leather Ankle-Strap Pumps”. Saks has them in a sassy citrusy colorway that is to die for.)

        • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

Oh, if only! Thanks for the intell, J.

          • J. Preposterice

no prob. (I might still have the Saks page up on my screen, so I can look at it wistfully.)

    • quiltrx

Is this a romper? I think I’m seeing a center seam, and there’s a dip like there are separate legs. I can’t sign off on a romper the week before Thanksgiving.

    • veriance

Is anyone else deeply troubled by her hair? It’s caramel on top, platinum at the temples and brassy on the ends. The top looks like a weird cap.

Love the glittery floral trim on this outfit!

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

She’s been wearing very grown-up shoes for about a year and I haven’t like it once.
