Katy Perry in Oscar de la Renta at the 2013 American Music Awards

Posted on November 25, 2013

Darlings, it’s the Monday of the longest work week on the American calendar. Let’s ease into it with something pretty and fabulous.

Katy Perry attends the 2013 American Music Awards held at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles, California in an Oscar de la Renta dress paired with Charlotte Olympia shoes and an Olympia Le-Tan clutch.

Oscar de la Renta Spring 2014 Collection

Olympia Le-Tan “Webster’s New World Handy Pocket Dictionary” Clutch

Personally, we think the nails, the ring, and the clutch are all a bit wrong for the dress, but they’re the pieces that take this from being a standard (albeit typically gorgeous) Oscar de la Renta look and turning it into a “Katy Perry in Oscar de la Renta” look. In other words, they wouldn’t have been our choices, but we can’t deny that they work for her.

She’s getting better at this fashion thing day after day isn’t she? Only Katy could make this clutch, nails and ring work… Her hair is glorious too!

  • Ooooh la la, Ms. Perry!

  • AmeliaEve

I want a dictionary purse!!!! She looks fantastic here, feminine and pretty and Hollywood but still a little quirky and Katy. Love.

  • misstressofsylar

I want those nails for New Year!

  • Latin Buddy

The nails are too matchy! I don’t wear nail polish so I dont know, are nail colors considered accessories? Meaning, how fast do they come off or are they meant to complement every outfit like Shelby “My colors are blush and bashful”?

    • formerlyAnon

Totally accessories! Nail color’s role is the wearer’s decision. I’d assume folks on the red carpet want nails to complement the specific ensemble. I’ve known “ordinary folk” redo their nails daily, (or twice daily for day/evening) but most choose the lower maintenance route – one manicure is intended to last for days, perhaps most of a week. Just as some folk carry the same purse day after day.

    • travelgirl28

      “Steel Magnolias” reference? Love.

  • I have to agree, apart from its being clearly too long for her. Shame they couldn’t hem it, but that hemline finish wouldn’t take well to a quick and dirty hem job.

    • Jackie4g

I remember the days of 10″ hems on silk organza dresses. This hem isn’t that deep, but looks like it might have nylon horsehair enveloped in its depths to maintain the stiffness. As an aside, if all these girls walk around in enormously tall platforms, why didn’t she just wear a pair with this dress?

      • Right? And no one would have been the wiser.

  • Anna Vasquez

    She is just ridiculously pretty!

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Love her hair and make-up here-so soft and lovely.

  • Sharon O’Rourke Frenz

    Love, love, love the nails.

  • CPK1

just loving it. Works so well with her coloring. She looks so very pretty

  • cmb92191

I like the dress.. but I am wondering why the dictionary clutch? The Olympia Le-Tan accessories are interesting, but I would have chosen the Hansel and Gretel one or Cry Baby Blues.

  • SewingSiren

Beautiful. I wish she had worn the veil. I don’t mind the nails , ring , and bag so much , they sort of make it a more “Katy” look.

    • Me, too. I would have loved to see it with the veil.

  • Lesley

the clutch is just not working at all but other than that she looks really pretty and she made a “prim & proper” Oscar dress into something quirky and fun, thumbs up Katy.

  • Fraught

The jazz about the hand area brings it to that Mary Engelbreit territory that makes it special and Katy Perry-ish.

  • Christy Bishop Cricow

  • tallgirl1204

I saw this on your Facebook feed last night, and based on the tiny thumbnail thought “what a classic Katy Perry dress.” Because, polka dots bedazzled with flowers is not a look for everybody, accessories or not.

  • Maluca

BRAVA! She’s working the shit out of this.
    I want her makeup artist.

    • CakesOnAPlane

and she clearly feels amazing in it, which is the icing on the cake 🙂

  • teensmom99

I love the way she takes this divine dress and makes it Katy Perry. But I have to say that for once I wish I could have the outfit as styled. I LOVE the mantilla.

  • Sarah

Ooh, her eyes are somethin’ else. Gorgeous look, but I hates her nails. But, I hate novelty nails, almost always (just me, don’t hate!) I do like the clutch, though. Librarian’s perfect accessory!

  • Mona_Visa

I usually hate polka-dots, but I love all this on Katy. Fabulous, pretty, happy. Even her nails made me smile.

  • gabbilevy

Love this to bits. Especially the clutch but I have a huge soft spot for “book bags.” Wearing the veil (at least around her shoulders, if not on her head) could have kicked this up to a WERQ, but as is, pretty great.

  • Beautiful, but why does her makeup always look so clownish? She is too young for that.

  • Introspective

very cute. she looks pretty and seems to be letting her quirk grow up. atta girl.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Oscar does major pretty so well, and Katy’s doing right by it-Love!

  • Danielle

That clutch is GIVING ME LIFE.

  • Carleenml

    love. love. love.

  • TrixieConQueso

She has my Dream Hair, and my purse! Purse goes for $2050 – must start saving…

  • OpinionatedMtnGirl

I love this dress! Just had to share that

  • marlie

I love everything about this. The ring and the nails add a Katy Perry spin to the dress and make it “her” look. And I don’t even mind the clutch. Yep, gorgeous all around.

  • MsOlympia

This is one of the best looks I’ve ever seen her in, and she is clearly loving it!

  • abfidy

Lovely. Great hair, great makeup, great dress. And maybe it’s just me, but she’s kinda got Bette Davis eyes, no?

  • TAGinMO

    It’s a WERQ for me.

  • Kimberly Wilcox

That Dress! I feel as though she’s growing out of her previously “bubble-gum” looks and is moving into just being a little quirky in (dare I say) grown up clothes. About a year ago she was wearing the short, shiny, and oddly proportioned clothing, in excessively bright colors, and looked like a cartoon character in a rejected Hannah Barbara cartoon (not always, but often). And lately, she’s been doing so much better. Perhaps she just outgrew the phase.

  • ms_kat

The gown is perfect on her. I’m not sure if she has extra crinolines for it to hold it’s shape better (than the runway version) but this silhouette is extremely flattering on her.

  • MW

She could have done without the nails and the ring but then she wouldn’t be Katy – for me it’s a WERQ.

  • ashtangajunkie

Katy Perry and Oscar de la Renta don’t sound like they belong together, but this is glorious. Love her hair and makeup.

  • Darcy H

I would cut someone for that clutch.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

A crafty kitten could make that clutch!

  • lobsterlen

I love that dress. Katie looks wonderful in Oscar de la Renta. The nails maybe too much. Definitely a look in the mirror and take something look.. What would have sent me over the edge with glee about this look is instead of the Webster Dictionary cover purse she carried a Vintage Flowering Plant field guide purse.

  • Adrianna Grężak

    Her hair gives me LIFE!

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Fabulous! And isn’t adding your own personal style (however silly) to any couture the hallmark of personal style? I’m digging this incarnation of Katie.

  • KinoEye

This is gorgeous. The dress is just perfect for her coloring, and that clutch is to die for. Brava!

  • random_poster

This is gorgeous. You go, Katie!

  • I can get behind everything but the nails. She looks very, very good.

  • Daktari100

I wouldn’t like this for anybody. But for her, it’s cute as a button.

  • Anna_Cecilia

She looks pretty freakin’ perfect here. I can’t even really hate on the nails and accessories because it’s Katy Perry, subtle isn’t in her vocabulary to begin with and everything all seems to work in this particular concoction.

  • conniemd

Yayyyyyyy. Sheer properly deployed, as in fully lined without leaving see through exposed legs, belly, ladies, butts, etc.

  • formerlyAnon

Like the hair. Ring & clutch would have done the job without the nails, but she’s allowed, since the sum total is nailing it.

  • This is a fashionable interpretation of “Holidays at Grandma’s House”. At least, my grandmother’s house. How did you know Miss Pat, Katy?

  • tereliz

Wow. This shouldn’t work on anyone… it wouldn’t work on anyone. Just Katy. Love that dress. Love that clutch. Hate the nails, but everything else is working for her.

  • nannypoo

This is adorable. I would hate those nails with anything else but here they’re sort of witty. I love her big hair with this dress.

  • MannahattaMamma

you know, in a clutch, it’s always good to have a dictionary.

  • Ann VerWiebe

I would have done pink nails with black dots – but that’s just me.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

    I love everything about this.

  • lunchcoma

As much as I begrudge her any praise after that musical number, I must admit that this is a good dress.

  • MilaXX

I like everything except the ring, but only because those are Katy Perry touches and this was the AMA’s. At a more serious show, I would hate those nails.

  • stubbornthoughts

This might be favorite Katy look, ever.

  • Contralto

I don’t even like this girl, but the outfit is adorable, top to bottom. Even the absurd accessories work on her.

  • Little_Olive

It’s like Dita Von Teese’s girly(ier) little sister and I like it.

  • Sadie-Ann

I love the clutch and nail pattern, but I wish they were a little shorter.

  • Tatiana Luján

I want that dress and I want it badly, even if I don’t have any event to wear it.
I’ll just gaze at it or eat pizza wearing it, as Rachel, Monica and Phoebe did in Friends.

  • DTLAFamilies

I love her hair. My hair is curly but they’re loose curls and I think I can pull off that look with the right haircut. Taking a pic to my hairdresser…

  • Qitkat

Now this is a gal who knows how to pose, seemingly loves the red carpet and fashion, and has so much fun doing it. And the dress is darling. Such a clever clutch. The Katy Perry I love.

  • Violentcello

Word nerd. I love that fucking clutch. Oh yeah, and the dress.

  • Imasewsure

This is one of my favorite looks of 2013… don’t even mind the nails LOVE LOVE

  • Kent Roby

Yay, this makes me happy. BTW, the clutch would also be perfect for a Drag Race alum, since reading is fundamental!

  • alyce1213

Absolute perfection. This is a personal best for Ms. Katy.
The slightly windblown glamour hair is fantastic.

  • martha

This is a great story. People with Downs Syndrome can be some of the strongest and most brave champions!

  • ThaliaMenninger

Fab. Love the dictionary clutch. LOVE.

  • TerryMarie

I love the ring and the clutch. I know I can’t afford the latter (I checked), and chances are pretty danged good that I can’t afford the former, either, but does anyone know where one can obtain it?

  • Aidan B

    Like a modern-day Snow White.

  • Chartreusite

I love how her personal style is evolving. I adore her cartoony looks, but it seems like she’s trying to play with whimsy while still keeping a somewhat mature and understated style to it now, which is really awesome to behold.

  • E2_Remote

My pretty of the day, very nice!

  • love the outfit but her hair is a big frizzy nightmare!

  • Alfred Cox

Gorgeous. This is a Personal Best for her, in my humble opinion. The dress suits her to a T and the clutch is TO DIE. Hit it!

  • GeoDiva

Except for the iron-on transfer roses, this was my prom dress in 1985!

  • DominoEstella

  • LaSylphide

Clutch -nope, not with this. HBC could get away with it, but Perry doesn’t have the presence to pull of quirky.

The dress? Major YES. Gorgeous and it looks great on her, although I miss the veil.

  • Trickytrisha

Good lord… she’s beyond perfect, imo. I would sleep with that dress, make out with it, have its babies. Love the hair, her makeup, the ring, nails, and even the clutch. Sigh. This makes me very happy and sustains me til I have to look at the Gaga.

  • Jacob Bowen

Something about her hair reads “Badly Dyed Black” to me, but the rest of this is PERFECT. I don’t typically enjoy her saccharine sweet style, but this is so “hipster librarian at the Oscars” that I LOVE it.

  • melanie0866

ROFL at that clutch! In a good way! I love it!

  • NYCGlamourpuss

As much as I always whine that they’re taking away her kookiness and glamming her up too much, I have to give it up for this. This is just stunning.

  • Crystal

    love her.

    love this.

    she is so fucking fantastic.

  • slizzy

She looks beautiful. Oh, to be a kooky raven haired pop diva.

  • decormaven

Happiness! Sail on, you beautiful gal.

  • Akemi

I love the dress. Those nails are terrible, and that clutch is weird, but I looooove the dress.

  • A Shiny O’Connor

‘Designing Women’ hair’s got to go.

  • SophieCollier

It’s cute. But yeah, the nails and clutch take this from looking de la Renta to Betsey Johnson. NTTAWWT

  • largishbearishAtlish

thank god she didn’t do the hair the model was wearing…can you imagine the horror??

  • Milos Mom

I appreciate the modesty kick she is on these days. But that is not an excuse to were a dress that does not make you look like you are way older then you are.

  • sunflower

I like the nails and ring on her but dislike the clutch, simply because I’m over the book clutches. I would have liked something different but equally whimsical with this for her.

  • SierraDelta

It’s easy to forget just how pretty she is. I don’t know if credit for this outfit goes to her or to someone she consults with, but this, to me, is true style. She’s taken a beautiful dress and accessorized it in a way that’s subtle and a little subversive but is instantly recognizable as uniquely her own look. I admire the way she incorporates nail art, too. It’s not my taste, and yet it doesn’t cheapen the overall effect. Well done.

  • mickiemonkey

She wins because she is not wearing illusion netting.

  • Fordzo

You know how annoyed some people are with Miley’s tongue? THAT’S how annoyed I am with her nails. Just stop it!

  • leenabelle says the skirt should be tight and shorter and the dress would be cute. also, she likes the ring. nails and purse which looks like a book. she always has the best ideas for fashion. she like the song last friday night and i’m wide awake.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

LOVE her hair – even if it is all Designing Women and all. Still love it. Want those 90’s big hair days to COME BACK!

  • quiltrx

I loved this look on the runway, and she’s making it sing. Pretty.

  • newtonGOTbeaned

I kind of wish she wore the pink dress shown in the background of the runway pic.

  • sweet_potato

I want that purse, sooooo, sooooo bad.

  • Diego!

GORGEOUS! I agree with the clutch, but she is WERQING it!!!

  • Sunraya

She looks lovely, comfortable and happy! A WERQ!

  • guest2visits

She was gorgeous in this – it all came off as delicate looking in spite of the not-so-subtle dress and accessories.
I still would have liked to see a less kitschy ring.
