Kate Hudson in Gucci at the 2013 LACMA Art + Film Gala

Posted on November 04, 2013

Is it us, or is there something of a Cher moment going on in the style world right this second? Gaga did her bit by showing up in public working a variation of “mid-’80s Serious Actress(but Fuck the Academy) Cher” last week and now here’s Miss Kate, of all people, working a mid-’70s TV Cher:

Kate Hudson attends the LACMA 2013 Art + Film Gala honoring David Hockney and Martin Scorsese, held at LACMA in Los Angeles, California in a Gucci halter neck gown.

Maybe it could more accurately be said that we’re having a bit of a Bob Mackie moment in fashion, which would be pretty cool, to be honest. He probably deserves a bit more serious consideration, given his enormous output and influence.

Anyway, this? Not bad. It made for a nice surprise, given how personality-less her style sometimes come across. Although to be fair, she has been slowly improving over time. We dig this for her. We just wish it wasn’t in such a bland color. The beige actually clashes a little with the yellow tones of her skin and it does nothing to set off her hair. Still, can’t fault her for impact. She looks pretty hot.

… Is it to much to ask for color? Guess so. I’ll go back to my coffee now…

  • flamingoNW

    Meh. It highlights her blandness.

    • Imasewsure

That’s what I thought. Pretty woman and great dress but a big Meh to me too.

    • Sarah

I really thought I was looking at Gretchen Mol so yeah, a bit bland despite all the sequins. This just reads tacky and disparate to me. I want Kate to go back to her glam hippie earth mama stage…it was a more natural compliment to her beauty and suited her better, I think.

  • A worldwide Cher moment would be FAB-U-LOUS!

    • Jackie4g

      Not to mention Bob Mackie.

  • Stephanie Gustafson

    but those ABS… swoon.

    • Glam Dixie

  • HM3

Her abs made me hate my morning danish JUST a little bit more.

    She looks fabulous.

    • Sobaika

They are giving out Krispy Kreme donuts this morning in my office. Saw this post in the nick of time.

      • demidaemon

Yeah, some of my students are selling dozens of Krispy Kremes for a fundraiser. I turned them down, for the sake of my wallet and waistline. Also, I don’t really like them all that much.

        • Sobaika

          You don’t like… Krispy Kreme???

        • Ugh, me neither. Way too sweet. They always make my stomach hurt.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

She’s very, very toned, and yes, she looks fabulous. I suspect a danish hasn’t passed her lips in a long time….

  • bukker

Is Ms. Hudson sporting some new “breastes”?

    • shirab

She did that a while ago, I think. Tastefully sized, if I may offer an opinion.

      • KateMaryC

Agreed. She was very honest about it, and about the fact that she had next to nothing before. I think she looks lovely.

      • Crystal

I do think they are really tastefully done. Kelly Rowland’s, too.

    • PatAfan

I was going to mention “the girls,” as a co-worker affectionately referred to her own recent enhancements, but why not. If you have the money to fulfill your desires, do it, whether a Maserati or a new silhouette.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

If this would have been Mackie red, *swoon*

  • Little_Olive

I don’t know how to write this in order to make sense, but here I go: She has too much abs for that dress. I don’t like the cutouts to begin with, what with the plunging neckline and all, but I am really no loving the muscle we see through them. Maybe if they were lower, and sat on the curve of her waist?
The beige-ness does not offend me that much.

    • 3boysful

I’m harrumphing because if you have that deep of a plunge, adding cutouts takes it to Vulgartown. WIth either/or, it would be a nice look.

    • Rhonda Shore

Agree entirely. I find the whole look too hard.

      • d4divine

True, I think it looks hard because she looks hard. Let’s face it, a woman can be as skinny as she wants, but as we get older we lose that subcutaneous fat that softens our edges. As a result some women look hard and sharp edged…pointy chins, flat faces, and boney. Ask Madonna, she’s shot enough crap in her face to plump it up, her face is starting to look like a kewpie dolls.

    • Sunraya

I said the same thing up above, before reading this. I agree. She is too “cut” for these cutouts.

    • formerlyAnon

I disagree, politely. But then photos of dancers’ and athletes’ bodies are more likely to move me to admiration than those of models and actresses. So my tastes may not be precisely red carpet.

    • Introspective

this. all this. i saw the pics and thought, i know you work out and stuff but sternum much, Kate?

    • MaryMitch

I just think the neckline is tacky. I mean, not many women could wear that, and she is one of them, but it’s just too much. Cher could get away with it because she’s Cher.

  • jmorino08

Damn! Those abs!! I guess I should lay off the potato chips…

  • MoHub

If we’re going to have Bob Mackie redux, I hope no one has the chutzpah to show up in the “Went With the Wind” drapes.

  • Jessica Freeman

The color of the skirt is off putting…the skirt really should have had the same sequin fabric to make this dress work.

  • zenobar

Cher’s great, but I’d really love to see a worldwide 70s Stevie Nicks moment.

*turns up “Rhiannon”, swirls off using a fleece throw as a shawl*

  • Does that little ab divot, that every lady star seems Hell bent on showing us, have a name? Anyway, this is nice. I guess. It comes off a little severe, but maybe she’s dying to be cast outside of her type. I’m not swooning, but I don’t have any specific critiques.

  • Well, I agree, she’s certainly been doing a lot of workouts, but I don’t care for this look. The dress would look AMAZING on someone with different coloring–maybe Jessica Chastain, with all her gorgeous red hair? Or a lady of color, maybe Frieda Pinto?–but on Kate it just is so drab. And I hate her hair and makeup. And the matchy nail color. If this were some rich fall color, like slate blue or olive green or rust or aubergine, I might feel differently. As it is….yawn, but ab admiration.

  • abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxqyz

    abs – yes.
but her breast implants – just a big FAT NO.

    • MilaXX

eh’ I don’t mind them so much. She got a reasonable size. It’s not like she went up to DD’s.

  • crash1212

This is a WERQ for me. Well done Kate.

    • Slanted & Enchanted

I agree. She is one of the few blondes who can really work this color, I think. And the dress is fab.

  • Crystal

God. I always forget how sick her body is.

  • MilaXX

It’s no bad, a bit beige-y bland and I think her hair would look better out, but overall it’s an okay look.

  • Colorless. But a pretty gown.

  • Her body is killer, no doubt, and she has abs to die for, but I think this dress requires a curvier woman to make it sing. Not that she looks bad, though the color is drab on her, just that I don’t think it’s her dress.

  • boweryboy

I can’t get past the color. I hate that “color”. What is it? Dusty Rose?

To me that color always, always, always looks like it’s dingy and dirty no matter how luxe the fabrics are.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

      “Ashes of Roses” .

      • DTLAFamilies

Ha, made my comment before I saw yours.

      • Margaret Nikoleit

I once designed a set for “The Heiress” and my researched showed “ashes of rose” was an extremely popular color in the mid 1800s, so I planned to use it for the walls. Unfortunately the settee my props crew got loaned to us was a deep apricot (and we weren’t permitted to recover it), so we had to change the walls to a shade of peach. Not the authentic effect I wanted. Oh well.

This skirt is not really grey enough to be ashes of rose. But it’s still blech.

    • marlie

I think TLo has previously called this color “old bras.”

    • DTLAFamilies

Ashes of Roses. Bob Mackie dresses Meggie.

    • Corsetmaker

It’s not reading as cool as that on my monitor. Not seeing a pinky tone. Looks straight up nude/beige to blend with the gold in the sequins. But who knows on a screen.

  • ashtangajunkie

Her body looks amazing. I don’t love the beige-ness of this look, but it’s impactful and she looks sexy in it.

  • lrhoff

Wow, this is gorgeous! There is an exhibition of some fine genes there……

  • Sunraya

I don’t like the cutouts, because it is cutting off her abdomen. Her abdomen muscles are awesome, but they are being cut in a weird way in this gown. Does anyone else see this, or am I seeing something that is not there???

  • formerlyAnon

It looks extraordinarily good on her, which I put down to the excellence of her body and the excellence of the fit, as much or more than the design itself. Me, being me, would like it much better if I saw a couple of inches less breadth of cleavage, but I have to admit it is gracefully displayed.

  • YoungSally

Damn — someone has been doing their Pilates. But in that second photo it also looks like she had a bit of face work done…but I think it is the photo.

  • marlie

I think this is pretty fabulous. The dress is gorgeous, and fits her like a glove. Sure, it’s not her best color, but I think the sequined detail in the bust saves it from being too head-to-toe monochromatic. Though… LIP COLOR, please.

  • decormaven

I’d like to see a softer hand with the eyeliner, and the hair as well. She is doing justice to this gown. Nice ring!

  • Glam Dixie

Boy that dress looks uncomfortable to wear, you could never relax your posture for one second.

  • ojosazules

I’m allergic to beige, but she looks amazing.

  • Jackie4g

Dearest Uncles (although at my advanced age I should probably refer to you as Darlin’ Nephews), Thank you for mentioning Bob Mackie, who occasionally designed for Goldie Hawn, so why not channel Mom? Mackie stands among the most versatile and original of costume designers, EVER . Who compares to Mackie? Well, maybe Walter Plunkett. But remember, Mackie designed for Carol Burnett at the same time he designed for Cher, and no one ever faulted those show opening and closing gowns. A memory of Carol Burnett may not pop up as clearly as with Cher, but if you see a picture, you’re bound to say what a gorgeous dress Burnett is wearing. At any rate, someday there will be enough attention paid to the genius and range of Bob Mackie. Off my soap box now.

  • Shawn EH

She could rock some real Bob Mackie. Sleeves!

  • conniemd

I think the design of the dress is gorgeous and sexy without being trampy. Do wish it had been in a blue or teal.

  • KinoEye

Those abs — I’ll be spending the rest of the day doing crunches. She looks great, but I’d love to see this gown in a bold, saturated color.

  • MondoWasRobbed

Maybe American Hustle will bring back that ’70s style–er, “style.”

  • alyce1213

She’s got the right body for this dress, it’s stunning. I’m not normally a fan of cutouts, but this works.
My only quibble is that her eye makeup is a little heavy. I even like the gold nail polish.

  • lalahartma

    Looking good!

  • Qitkat

Kate looks incredible in this. Full stop. Perfect posture, well-toned (and tanned 🙁 ), no malfunctions anywhere. Beautiful gown, even if it is beige.

  • Imasewsure

Love the dress (color could be different) and it looks good in theory but it’s just not working for me. She looks like she’s playing dress up

  • DTLAFamilies

She’s got an amazing body and the gown fits her perfectly but she’s getting a Jada Pinkett too-hard look about her. A softer ‘do would help.

  • melanie0866

I can’t stop looking at those abdominal muscles peeking out of the bodice. What ARE those? Pretty sure I don’t have them.

    • Not applicable

i do- buried under a warm tea cozy fat layer.

  • I like her nailses. I want that color on mine toes!

  • Obviously not on her period.

  • jonnyf8

Has she had some work done on her face? Everything looks a little “sharp” and “tight” to me. She’s may be at the top of my irrational hate list, so that compounded with it being a Monday might have my vision a little skewed.

    • TerryMH

I thought the same thing too…something looks “different” to me. Is it the eye makeup or weight loss? I can’t quite put my finger on it . . Hmmmm

  • d4divine

She looks fantastic! The dress is tailored to perfection!

  • Janet B

    Not her color.
A Mackie dress would be fab on her.

  • Tracy_Flick

I love it, except for the color of the skirt – it really needs to be better matched to the bodice. Maybe it’s one of those things that look better in person.

  • Erika Schultze

It’s very Bob Mackie which is why I love it so much. I grew up in the 70s so Bob Mackie dresses on Cher and Carol Burnett are burned into my formative years. I think she looks good in it but it’s SO Bob Mackie I really want to steal it, even though it’s actually Gucci.

What can I say? I love me some Mackie so this rings all of my bells. And it makes me want to run to Vegas and see Jubilee!

    • TerryMH

Can I tell you that I’ve had the pleasure of being acquainted with Bob Mackie and found him to be witty, charming, and amazingly talented – just a gem of a human being and a true artist!

  • snarkykitten

    OLD. BRAS.

  • Andrea Lentz

no way look at those abs. i would rock that dress too if i looked like her.

  • Not applicable

Ja-sus Crimmeney! Someone’s seeing a trainer regularly. Holy shit- look at those abs? That high ass?? I’m blind– blind with jealousy.

    • Dagney

Agree agree agree…That body is her best accessory.

  • rissa42210

Girlfriend is looking fiiiioooonnnee! Dem abs. She needs to get over her fear of color, and that hair, though a good shape for the dress, is not doing her any favors. It looks a little underdone. But, damn, girl! Fierce!

  • River

God I miss Cher. At least we always had something different to look forward to.

  • neofashionista

    smokin hot
no many people but J LO could pull this off

  • I hate the color perhaps more than is strictly necessary.

  • Dagney

Chiquita has been at the gym. LOVE it. Love seeing muscles on these ladies.

  • Vtg Fashion Library

Well, if this is Cher, it’s a damn site better than the Japanese lady in the commisary on Halloween, who professed with great vigor that she was dressed as Cher, wearing a pair of black trousers and a billowy ruffled bishop sleeve blouse. I was offended.

  • demidaemon

I hate the color here. It reminds me of vomit.

  • amf0001

she looks like a really angry/hungry new third wife to me

  • frannyprof

Altho I’m guessing that with Miss Kate, here, it’s more of a “showing off my abs” moment than a Cher/Bob Mackie moment.

  • Lauren Dorsee Dillon

Something about her looks off and it’s not just the color of that gown. She looks, I dunno, rodential? (Yes, I made that word up.) She needs to soften herself.

  • Zubair Ghumro

She looks hot and better then ever! Maybe its exercise or age or both but her face looks toned with there jawline so clear.

    • Fannie Wolston

      pilates and hot yoga

      • Not applicable

i’m guessing not all pilates & hot yoga… i’m guessing she eats no bread at all… or any carbs for that matter…

        • Fannie Wolston

just nuts and kale chips, eh?

          • Not applicable

  • Alloy Jane

If by hot you mean sweaty, then yes. She looks sweaty. She’s sweating all over that pile of meh.

  • ItsDicey

Oh, how I miss Bob Mackie!

  • Fannie Wolston

    bow down gwynnie

  • Madam Von Sassypants

  • ItAin’tMe

Looks more like a pretty Olympist than a movie star.
