Kate Hudson for Harper’s Bazaar Magazine

Posted on November 13, 2013

Here’s your Pretty of the Day: Kate Hudson for Harper’s Bazaar. We’re surprised too.

Kate Hudson covers the December 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar magazine in Lanvin photographed by Alexi Lubomirski.

On her red carpet style: “People think we own all these dresses, but we borrow them! I can’t afford to buy that stuff. There are certain things I splurge on, but it’s very rare, especially when you have two kids and school tuition. I’m not a big high-end fashion shopper. I wish I could but the truth is things are just so expensive. Before Isabel Marant was a million dollars and famous, I used to go to her store in Paris and go crazy, it was so affordable.”

On her favorite red-carpet looks this year: “The black-and-gold Alexander McQueen dress she wore to the Golden Globes and a red Stella McCartney and a red Prabal Gurung. I haven’t really done Valentino yet, but I want to.”

On the beaded denim Balmain minidress she wore to this past summer’s premiere of “Clear History”: “It was a bit intimidating,” she recalls. “The workmanship is amazing. It brought me back to being a little girl looking at anything sparkly.”

Not that Kate isn’t pretty; just that she’s rarely demonstrated the kind of work-that-camera skills that gets people designated T Lo’s Pretty of the Day. But this is a fun editorial that plays to her strengths and pushes her envelope a bit. Who knew she could work a ridiculously exuberant McQueen dress like that? And she’s seriously making that Givenchy sing. It’s a surprise they put the Lanvin shot on the cover, since it’s the least interesting of the three looks here.

Goodness gracious, that Givenchy is Her Color.

    • Karen Belgrad

      Goodness gorgeous gracious!!!

    • GorgeousThings

She looks better than the models in all three looks, but she really knocks it out of the part with the Givenchy.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

I would have never thought of that for her, but damn, she looks amazing!

  • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

So fun, so pretty. I love her, always have. The Givenchy makes me miss her and wish I’d be seeing her onscreen sometime very soon.

  • crash1212

Love her. Love the pictures. She looks better in that McQueen than the model. Rock on Kate!

    • Denise Alden

All of those models got schooled, didn’t they? :)

    • kimmeister

I don’t like where the upper tier of feathers is set though. It obliterates the waist of any wearer.

    • Trickytrisha

That model, dunno who she is, but she’s certainly uh, unique?

  • Karen Belgrad

Does she have a new sitcom or movie that I am unaware of? She seems to be popping up a lot more lately…

  • sagecreek

    Kate Hudson’s poor-mouthing? Oh, puleez.

    • MoHub

Precisely. “I can’t afford” coupled with “I used to fly to Paris” makes my teeth hurt.

      • ana170

In all fairness, a trip to Paris is a lot cheaper than some of those dresses, especially in winter.

  • Blair Sylvester

those remarks are eye roll inducing. She can afford any item she wants. If she had said I just don’t feel the need to spend x amount on y I would rather spend money on my kids that would be fine. Just the way its phrased.

    • fursa_saida

Right? If you’re jetting off to Paris to do your bargain-hunting, then don’t talk about what you can’t afford.

    • Adrianna Grężak

Same, kind reminds me of a blog post I read where a certain man repelling fashion blogger argued that everyone has a choice between fashion labels or shopping for knock offs at Zara. I’m like, I can’t even afford Zara!

      • Evan

I wish I knew who you were talking about. I’d love to read that post just for a laugh, but I don’t read any fashion blogs other this one.

        • Blair Sylvester

There is a a blogger named Leandra Medine who writes a blog called man repeller

    • mom2ajs5

Right! I work in a nonprofit, my husband owes a small business. I even feel guilty bitching about our daughter’s tuition because I know we are lucky to be able to afford to send her to a private school at all. I would feel like an asshole if I were a millionaire and doing it.

    • BKagainwiththesweatpants

      Gwyneth Jr.
But she does look great in the clothes, which Gwynnie rarely does.

      • Blair Sylvester

I think gwyneth is relatively aware of / doesn’t try to downplay that she is crazy privileged and her experiences are different than most people . Kate seems to be trying to say yeah I might be a celebrity but I worry about tuition just like you

    • eli122

she does know that we know that here parent where huge successful actors who have a lot of money. She here self is a successful actress who earns millions. Tution for here child is probably not a lot of money for her.

She sounds if she is some middle class mother who struggle too keep fashionable while trying to raise a family. You where born rich , you are rich so stop trying to be some one your not. You wardrobe closet is probably worth more then the tuition for your children ,(pleas eye roll)

  • Jacob Bowen

GIRL THAT GIVENCHY’S YOUR DRESS!!!!!! And your hair is PERFECT in that McQueen shot!

  • TrixieConQueso

Thank You Kate for NOT doing the Blue mask or the Helmut – barf! Kate is such a doll and has really wowed moi’ on Glee!! Love these shots!

  • hughman

That McQueen dress has Campari calendar written all over it.

  • http://skreened.com/bkcentral Sarah

Wow she looks really good in deep red! And the fact that ANY person could look good and not like a cracked-out Muppet in that McQueen is downright incredible.

  • ampg

I think they had to use the Lanvin for the cover, because the other two need the full-length shot to really get the effect.

  • MilaXX

I love the red & purple Givenchy. I’m not a fan of Kate though, she bugs for some reason.

    • mindo820

      I’m with you – there’s just something about her I don’t like…. Can’t put my finger on it…

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

She is what Julianne Hough thinks she sees in the mirror.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

      snicker and snort

    • LondonMarriott

      BOOM. Roasted.

  • GoAwayKardash

That editor is cray-cray. The Givenchy should have been the cover!!

  • Adrianna Grężak

This is somebody who is geniunely happy and comfortable with themselves

  • Michelle Wilson

She looks amazing in the Givenchy.

  • kat89

She looks great, but she really is completely clueless, isn’t she? Talking about how she can’t afford her red carpet dresses and in the next sentence says she would fly to Paris to buy up designer clothes. You can almost hear the air hissing out of her head….

    • decormaven

She’s playing to the middle. Downcasting for us plebians, but letting the upper crust know she shops in Paris for couture.

  • decormaven

Love the two looks of glorious red on her. Gorgeous!

  • marlie

That Givenchy is GORGEOUS. She looks great!

  • Coolekat

    Three WERQs.

  • StylishDreaming

The red-on-red combo could not be more predictable for a holiday issue. Something about this cover shoot just comes off as really cheesy and in-your-face (not in a good way). For starters, it looks like a Glamour reject…

  • Lilak

Who knew that that Givenchy gown had a soul?!

  • ThesisMonkey

    LOVE the McQueen on her

  • formerlyAnon

Great shot of the Givenchy. And of her in it. That’s the kind of fashion editorial I understand: the kind that makes you wish you could own the clothing.

  • Violentcello

Damn. Love her in that Givenchy, but I laughed out loud when I saw the model photo.

  • pookiesmom

This may be the most obnoxious interview I’ve ever read. Say what you will about Gwyneth Paltrow, I’ve never heard her bitch about not having enough money to buy designer clothes. Daughter of Goldie Hawn and Bill Hudson? Designer clothes are too expensive for you? Puh-leaze. This is a whole new level of out-of-touch. I can hardly look at the photos because my eyes are rolling so hard.

    • Anna_Cecilia

I’m totally with you. In fact, I happen to like the fact that Gwyneth doesn’t apologize for being privileged. That’s what makes her so hilarious. Those 2 run in the same circles and come from similar backgrounds. Nothing gets me riled up like “Poor Me,” syndrome among the Hollywood set. She knows she’s not just like the rest of us, I know she’s not like me.

Having said that, she does look beautiful and seems more interesting here. That Givenchy dress positively comes alive on her.

  • dorothea_brooke

A terrible actress and completely insensitive? What’s not to love?

  • nannypoo

She’s demonstrating actual personality here. She always seems so dumb, but here she looks like a person who might be fun to be around. Of course this opinion was formed before reading her comments about the tragic cost of purchasing clothes after flying to Paris, but what do I know. Maybe she should send her kids to public school so she could afford better clothes.

    • Heather

I’m not sure about ‘dumb’ exactly; to me she always come across as well-meaning, but bland and personality-less in an entitled, Malibu beach house kind of way. She seems at her best when she’s basically playing herself (see Almost Famous or this editorial) – there’s not much range there.

  • Janie

Her quotes about fashion being too expensive do sound stupid, but it got me thinking — if you totaled up the value of all the clothes, shoes, jewelry, and bags a famous actress would wear on a promotional tour for a movie, how much would it cost to actually buy all those things? Dozens of red carpets at multiple worldwide premieres, photo calls, film festivals, and talk shows… that’d easily go into the six figures, and a lot more if it’s for a role that requires hitting the awards-show circuit as well.

    • ballerinawithagun

I’m glad somebody brought this point up. Kate really isn’t in the big leagues as far as money for roles is concerned. All of us normal people wonder how stars end up declaring bankruptcy. Well it is because they spend money that they have at the time but may not always be there. She was probably going to Paris on a regular basis anyway. And then why would you buy the dress when the designers let you wear them for free. Advertising for the designers you know.

  • steeg of their own

My problem here: two out of three dresses look like they’re camouflaging. The way she’s wearing the McQueen, it looks like she’s trying to hide several hyacinths and the national flower of Denmark in there. The Lanvin bra-and-dress looks like, well, a bra-and-dress. The one that makes her really look fantastic is the Givenchy. She looks free and unconstrained (Lanvin, take note) and not like she’s trying to hide a whole tire in that thing (McQueen, I know you’re dead and I mourn your fashion sensitivities here, because you would have known better). This editorial ends well, but that’s all you can say for it. The rest, you can say, could be canned.

  • Tatiana Luján

I love her smile, it’s fresh. She seems like a really fun person to hang with.

  • maretha2

I don’t care one way or another about Kate Hudson as a person (was glad to hear Lea Michele say that she was a good friend to her during extremely traumatic circumstances — hooray for friends!) … but she is making all three of these dresses look better than they did on the runway. That Givenchy is stunning. Well done.

  • carnush

    Beautiful! That Givenchy is divine.

  • MoHub

So—will the Givenchy model be able to drink her cocktail? Isaac Mizrahi, take note.

  • twocee

Interesting that the dresses she lists as her favorite looks were also the ones that TLo applauded her for. Maybe she’s been reading the blog :)

As far as her comments…meh. What people can and can’t afford is completely relative, and as is often pointed out here, celebrities don’t live in the real world.

  • cocohall

I can sympathize to a point. As a celebrity, you aren’t exactly doing “investment” buying. You wear a look once, and that’s it. One and done. You can’t be photographed in the same thing again. But I saw her once on an episode of Rachel Zoe’s reality show, and unfortunately, the cluelessness on display here is pretty much on the mark. That being said, you can be clueless and generous at the same time. Glad she was there for Lea Michele during a horrific time. And she looks amazing here.

  • valerie747

You are correct. The model does not sell the Givenchy at all. Kate makes girly hearts go wild with Givenchy-envy.

  • AMartel

Hey, the droopy booby dress. And she makes it look great!

  • Elz

    This dumb bitch.
It’s one thing to say you “can’t afford” (i.e., wouldn’t pay that much for) red carpet outfits, but it’s another to say you rarely splurge when you have millions of dollars. Everything you own is a splurge, including your house(s), car(s), private school for your kids. Like anyone feels bad for your stupid ass that you have two kids to clothe, feed, and send to school. Twat.

    • AMartel

      Lighten up it’s just fashion.

  • AnotherJulie

I think she is adorable and seems fun. And what she says doesn’t offend me at all. Celebrities, like everyone, can choose to spend their $ however they’d like. She chooses not to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a dress she can wear once. How is that a problem?

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

She is her mother’s daughter. Love them both! As most others have commented, she looks amazing in that Givenchy!
