Jordin Sparks in Jovani at the 2013 American Music Awards

Posted on November 26, 2013

Trying too hard:

Jordin Sparks attends the 2013 American Music Awards held at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles, California in a Jovani Couture dress paired with Schutz shoes and jewelry by Charles Albert, Pink Accessories and Vince Camuto.

Jovani Prom Dress

Both her and the dress. This thing shot for fierce and landed on tacky, we’re afraid. It’s possible this could have been styled in a more interesting way, although we doubt it would have done much to change our minds. As it is, we’re kind of annoyed that the jewelry and shoes are so coordinated and matchy. And that top knot isn’t doing a thing for the look.

At least the bodice fits perfectly. No side boob. No squished out the side-boob. Have to give her props for that.

    • zuzu

I’d really like to know what she’s doing for support under there, because everything is front and center. I fear the answer is something like “youth.”

      • teensmom99

Sorry–while the bodice fits, it’s not doing the girls any favors. They are a little flattened. Just looking uncomfortable to me.

        • Levedi

I agree – the cut of that thing makes anyone over an A cup look like they are sagging. That’s not flattering at all. She’s fine. The dress is not.

          • teensmom99

Yes, this is not about a problem with her body. It’s a problem with the dress. And I’m not sure any one can pull off leather on the breasts.

          • mightbewrong

Seriously, tight leather across the chest looks like more ‘encased’ than ‘dressed.’
            edit: and it rhymes, too

  • anyalama

When do top knots ever look good? I can’t honestly remember an example. Looking at them makes my hairline hurt.

    • LittleMascara

And they seem to be so popular now.

    • DebbieLovesShoes

. . . and I get an instant sympathy headache.

    • kimmeister

I thought Nicole Kidman pulled one off in a recent photo shoot, but it was a rare exception.

    • marlie

It looks like she has a braid down the back. I think I like that LESS than the topknot.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

I know, I can feel my forehead trying to breathe.

    • sojourneryouth

I kind of think it’s for ballerinas and synchronized swimmers, and nobody else.

    • mightbewrong

Never. I only realized Kim Kardashian is actually quite beautiful when I saw a picture of her without that stupid ponytail. Hair tightly pulled back always looks so severe and awful.

  • RussellH88

This dress needs to be worn by someone who can say “Bam! Here I am, bitches. Feast your eyes on me.”

She’s just saying “Hey guys, I look cool, right?”

    • Jessica Freeman

Exactly what she is saying in the second picture. She’s too sugary sweet to try and pull this one off.

    • Evan

      This is Naomi Campbell’s dress.

      • Lea Setegn

        Or Iman?

      • ConnieBV

    • Melvis Velour

one begs to ask the question…is this girl still relevant enough to merit consideration by the BKs?

  • TonyGo

“Trying to hard” used to describe Jordin Sparks is redundant.

  • Diego!

I have to say… I know it’s tacky and everything you say it’s true, but she is sparkling! (LOL), She looks tacky but fierce at the same time. I don’t know whether I like it or not.

    • Rhonda Shore

That’s how i feel, there’s something cool about her having the nerve to wear this dress. I think it’s her facial expression that’s a bit trying to hard, but she’s happy and having fun. I can’t condemn this.

      • Diego!

Maybe she should change her lips into a red color. It would suit better, but she seems to be enjoying a lot this dress!

  • Sarah

I don’t hate it too much, because it fits. I do, however, want to slap that leg and tell it to go back and stand with its partner, where it belongs.

    • conniemd

The tackiness is from the leg sticking out and the pose. The dress itself doesn’t shout tacky to me at all. She should pack it up and give it to Angelina Jolie, though.

      • Sarah

Angelina Jolie made me want to slap her leg, too. I have a firm belief that these slits are only for when you are walking, and not when you are posing. IF your leg happens to show, then you let it. YOU DO NOT stick it out, like a ham on a platter.

        • kimmeister

At least she didn’t “raise the curtains” a la Blake Lively.

        • HomeOfficeGirl

Yes! Thank you. It’s supposed to be subtle.. these ladies are totally missing the point.

        • AnnPopovic

That’s what I thought! And because nobody worked it that way, I thought it was ME who missed the point. The slit isn’t for sticking your leg OUT, it’s the promise of a hopeful peek IN.

  • leahpapa

    • Sarah

      Ha! Weird. Biker Prom.

      • leahpapa

I mean, it’s tacky but it’s still more sophisticated by half than what my ilk and I wore to our prom in the 90s. I showed my sweetie a picture recently and he asked, lacking any irony or shade, “Was there a Little House on the Prairie theme that year?”

        • Sarah

Well, I had prom in ’92, and I wore a babydoll with stilettos, and I’m pretty sure I looked like a child hooker. So, yeah, this is pretty classy, come to think of it.

          • leahpapa

Please tell me you had a black velvet choker, too (cross or daisy pendant optional). I was already so busty once the babydoll thing happened, I’m pretty sure I looked like a walking cautionary tale about the consequences of backseat assignations from 1991-1994.

          • Sarah

Shit. Not sure about prom, but I definitely had the velvet choker. You had to. And it was cross, for me. I was a Dark Child.

        • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Ah yes, I had at least two ‘Gunnee Sack’ LHOP dresses. And my prom was back in the Stone(d) Ages.

    • imspinningaround

Ha ha, I said the same thing. “Jovani? The prom dress people?”

    • kimmeister

Clearly not meant for dancing up close with a partner. Unless you want to perforate him.

      • marlie

And now parents of teen girls everywhere are running out to get this dress for their daughters.

  • Grecian Biker realness?

  • eowyn_of_rohan

The bodice is like a Lite Brite that only has one color bulb.

    • Just posted the same. Lite Brites abound.

  • sagecreek

I dunno, maybe I’m soft this morning, but I’m leaning toward fierce.

  • Dan_In_NYC

Fit is amazing. With different shoes, bigger hair and some serious drag make-up I could get on board. As it is, she’s too fresh-faced and yoga-haired to pull this off.

  • gabbilevy

Ok, kittens, assignment: This clearly isn’t Jordin’s dress. Whose is it?

    • alyce1213

I toss in Kelly Rowland, a decade older and fiercer.

    • Jessica Freeman

  • KinoEye

No hugs or other bodily contact for Jordan tonight. Those boobs look pokey and dangerous.

  • dellagraceslife

I don’t think it’s a topknot- looks more like a pony tail braid.

  • decormaven

The bodice, while fitted well, is not flattering to her – it makes her look very broad shouldered. I cosign on all petitions calling for the end of the top knot- they aren’t flattering and I fear for early hair loss.

  • Jessica Freeman

Trying too hard for sure. But she usually is. I actually like the dress, but the severe hair and leg popping are kind of ruining it .

  • lobsterlen

Well when compared to all the figure skating illusion netting and the ass crack crucifix its not that bad.

  • Angela_the_Librarian

So, I’ve been half-watching old episodes of Star Trek Deep Space Nine with my husband, so the first thing I thought of when I saw the earring was: “that is fabulous Bajoran fashion!”

    • lifeisastory

I knew that ear chain reminded me of something…
But I hate it. Also, she needs lipstick.

      • Sarah

Yes. LIPSTICK. I hate lipstick, and only wear gloss, but damn if I don’t think that these photos on TLo prove that a lady needs lippy at these events.

  • ashtangajunkie

The bodice is wrong for her and I hate that hair. She has really beautiful hands – if nothing else, I appreciate her manicure.

  • lobsterlen

I just realized this …. if there was an award for best dressed at the AMA 2013 would Miley Cyrus win?!?!?
*edit* I’d forgotten Katie Perry in the Oscar de la Renta so Miley is second … still.

  • Nika E

it’s better than most she does need bigger hair, slightly heavier makeup and different shoes but I actually don’t mind the jewelry

  • MoHub

  • DebbieLovesShoes

The ear-chain thing threw in over into tacky-land for me. And yes, I agree — “trying to hard” prettymuch sums it up. As they say in the South, “Bless her heart”.

  • Kent Roby

I think the dress (especially the bodice) is great, but why must women work so hard to prove in every pose that there’s a big slit by sticking the leg out?

  • lehen

I HATE when ladies hold the slit of their dress open. GAHHHH!

  • kimmeister

The chain on her right ear reminds me of Jane Child’s nose chain back in the 90’s. I’m so over rings being worn on the central finger segment.

    • Sarah

Right? I just looks like the ring either was too small, and you couldn’t fit it, or too big, and was slipping off. I loathe it.

    • GTrain

I’m glad I’m not the only person who remembers Jane Child!

      • kimmeister

And now you’re humming “Don’t to fall in love,” aren’t you?

  • Akemi

I’d like it better if she would have done a long ponytail instead of that top knot. And maybe different jewelry. The dress fits her really well though.

  • All is see is Lite-Brite.

  • Richard Banger

This looks like what a Kardashian would wear when they try to shoot for “Demure”

  • Idk, I kind of like it! The shoes ruin if for me though. Also that’s not a top knot, it’s a braid.

  • Nancer

This might be a GTNYD moment. I keep thinking with different styling it MIGHT look fabulous, but it takes a PhD level fashionista to make it work.

  • Fatima Siddique

That dress looks cheap. I don’t know what material they used to make those studs on the bodice, but it looks fakity fakey fake.

  • marlie

Also, I like this, except I wish the bodice hit her waist in the same place it hit the model, rather than seemingly higher on her torso. It would have improved the proportions to me. And I hate the shoes, but otherwise, I kind of like this.

  • Julie Ree

Looks like she was accessorizing in the Forever 21 clearance rack.

  • Tatiana Luján

The bodice seems longer on the model than on her. On her, it’s so short the dress looks like it had an empire waist.
I quite like it on the model. How would it look on Jessica Chastain?

  • MilaXX

yeah she almost always misses the mark.

  • Is it weird I think the slit should be higher? In any case, that ship it to Kim Kardashian.

  • Imasewsure

    Head to toe no

  • Jaeda Laurez

I feel like it’s a bit short in the torso, but it’s relatively inoffensive, as these things go.

  • OMG, it’s literally a prom dress. I’m cringing for her.

  • formerlyAnon

That bodice is either slightly deforming the lines of her bust so that there’s more upper ribcage than breast, or it’s creating an odd optical illusion. I vote optical illusion because it makes it look as if the 101 pound model had a chest worthy of a figurehead on the prow of a sailing vessel. (Which is possible, but would be atypical.)

  • NYCGlamourpuss

    • Lori

Thor is way hotter than this hot mess.

      • NYCGlamourpuss

But you get me, right? I mean, a Viking helmet with horns would be the proper accessory for this outfit.

        • Lori

I get you. Gaga should have gone full Norse on her 8-legged horse the other day and then passed the regalia over to Jordan.

          • NYCGlamourpuss

Now that woulda made that show interesting!

  • Darcy H

Put your leg away and your bitch face on darling, you’re ruining any change this dress had.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I actually kind of like this, yeah the shoes are too much and the bracelets are a bit matchy (which doesn’t bother me as I’m a matchy person myself). But she looks confident and she’s putting it out there. Makes me wish more stars would “try too hard” once in a while.

  • BrooklynBomber

I don’t know. I think the dress works for her; I just wish it didn’t have the slit (or that she’d pull her leg in). And, yeah, ixnay on the topknot.

  • nannypoo

This is a beautiful woman who has no idea how bad she looks. Everything is wrong here.

  • LeelaST

Did she not have access to a side-view mirror? Tsk.

  • quiltrx

This is one of those looks that, in small pictures, I kind of liked at a glance for being a little ‘out there’. But up close I see the flaws, and how seriously unflattering it is (and she doesn’t realize).

  • I’m not much on the hair or the posing, but I like the dress.

  • SophieCollier

She looks like a pinhead. BAD proportions.

  • Claudia

I irrationally love her. She’s how hot I wish my body was.

  • ThaliaMenninger

This is not her dress. Unflattering to say the least.

  • Sorry dudes, I kinda love it. She looks awesome.

  • ThesisMonkey

the cut of the bodice is not doing her any favors.

  • Matthew Vella

I hate saying this, but I think this would only work on someone with a very slim model-like figure
