Jennifer Lawrence in Christian Dior at the “Catching Fire” NY Premiere

Posted on November 21, 2013

This is still too tricky by half, but it gets more right than wrong, if that makes any sense.

Jennifer Lawrence attends “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” premiere in New York City in a Christian Dior ensemble paired with Manolo Blahnik heels and Dior jewelry.

Christian Dior Resort 2014 Collection/Model: Elise Smidt (WOMEN)

The black looks good on her –  and this is from two queens who’ve been bitching about black for a straight month now. It strikes us as a bit too simple in shape for a premiere, but then again, she’s been wearing some fairly grandiose getups throughout this publicity tour, so she’s allowed to go for something on the easy-to-wear side of the rack. Not at all in love with the white and green part, though.  The latter’s a bit too reptilian and the former looks a bit like a bandage or body cast.

Also, those shoes look like they’re torturing her feet. Since the dress is fairly light, we would’ve gone with a pump to dress it up a little.

She looks like a V Alien that had her fake skin ripped off when someone got a bit rough with her boobage.

    • Karen Belgrad

      Yes! I immediately thought… V reboot?

    • Alloy Jane

I just imagined that and now I have to pee from laughing. Cheers 🙂

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Did somebody say Morena Baccarin and Jennifer Lawrence making out with tongue?

  • msdamselfly

It doesnt appear that Dior is the appropriate label for her. All of the clothes seem too mature for her

    • Clueless_Jock

You know whait it is – the classic Dior look (as interpreted by Raf Simons in his first collection) would probably suit her, but the edgier, cerebral Simons aesthetic, which has filtered into Dior lately, does not.

      • NYCGlamourpuss

I think you’re right. I think that’s it on the nose.

    • GeoDiva

She is too young for Dior. Maybe MiuMiu/Prada would be a better match for her.

      • nowlo

Good suggestion. The playful, skewed ’50s miu miu aesthetic would suit her better than Dior. I think she and January Jones need to trade wardrobes.

        • Tashina Savage

You are exactly right! Wow I would love to see a wardrobe switch and see how these styles would look on January Jones vs. Jlaw.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

JLaw and Dior are not a good match.

        • Kristin McNamara

I just don’t quite understand…. there’ve gotta be SOME hot Dior dresses that exist. Even if they’re from earlier seasons???!? WHY the hell do they keep putting this woman in dresses that are not only hideous, but in some cases (like this one), BORING and not even special-looking! Like… movie premiere? Does anyone honestly get “movie premiere” from this dress?!

          • bitchybitchybitchy

I’m right there with you. She’s a a lovely young woman and Dior ought to be doing better by her.

  • DailyDose

is the dress altered from the tuxedo jacket your ex boyfriend left in your closet?

  • MsOlympia

    A bit heavy on the under-eye highlighter…

  • Glam Dixie

Why the stupid half top underneath? I would like it more if something filled that little triangle of skin I can see.

    • jen_vasm

It looks like a sports bra tarted up with one of those boob modesty panels you hook onto a camisole.

      • kimmeister

Exactly! It looks like, “oops, I forgot my boob tape so let me just grab this semi-cute bralette and run out the door.”

      • marlie

My grandmother used to sew those modesty panels into clothing she deemed too revealing. Drove my mom and my aunt nuts. And it continued after my mom and aunt were “grown.”

      • cmb92191

So true. I work in a very conservative modest environment.. and I see plenty of boob modesty panels.

  • Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

It’s not bad, but it’s too casual for a premiere and the red carpet

  • dixie murphy ross

The detailing puckers at the waist and gives her a baby bump. OMG IS SHE PREGNANT?! (I always wanted to start a celeb pregnancy rumor.)

    • Liz

LOL is it Peeta’s or Gale’s?

      • dixie murphy ross

        FINNICK’S! Isn’t it shocking?!

  • Tatiana Luján

why, why do her makeup people put eyeliner in her inner eyelids?
Why did they dye her hair blonde when her natural color suits her skin a thousand times better?

    • kimmeister

Why do they keep giving her eye shadow wings? Up close it’s sort of ok, but from far away they make her look cross-eyed.

  • sagecreek

Hate the shoes and it desperately needs a bracelet, but yeah. Judging in the entirety of this tour, this is a win.

  • MilaXX

It looks like a tube top under a boyfriend jacket

  • kipper

Best looking mother at the PTA that night !!

  • Noah

I have to resist the urge to straighten her jacket.

  • Jen

Can’t she at least be provided shoes that fit?

  • wished should would have done a bolder lip or a belt. It’s just missing something.

  • Lesley

i actually really like it on the model, it’s just not doing it for me on her. i think it comes down to the fact that Dior is just not a good fit for her at all.

  • Carina

Can her Dior contract end, please?

    • I just want to do a “Girl, That’s Not Your Designer” post

  • Carleenml

    Flight attendant.

  • Beardslee

A silk purse turned into a sow’s ear. Too bad.

  • MzzPants

A knock-out shoe would have elevated this look considerably. Love the hair and makeup.

  • zenobar

Nothing says “movie premiere” like a sports bra.

    • SylviaFowler

      And no pedicure.

  • mommyca

I defended her (in my head at least) during her pole dance this past week with all her glamorous looks (most of them not even TLo-approved), but I cannot accept this very casual outfit for NYC… she goes with the “resort” collection? no no no… and don’t get me started with the sports bra thing she is wearing…

  • didgerdoni

I love her in what borders on a creepy way, but I CANNOT with the formal sports bra.

  • wisenhar

Why are her tits behind chicken wire?

  • I had just about reached my maximum amount of JLaw allowance, but then I caught her on Kelly and Michael, this morning, and I was reminded of why I fell in adore with her. She’s funny, charming and genuinely self deprecating. I fully blame Dior and her people for the fuckery that has been her red carpet appearances. Still though, when I look at this, all I really think, is “nice sports bra”, so things aren’t all that improved.

    • lobsterlen

Yes I am the blame Dior camp too. If Dior has nothing that makes Jennifer Lawrence look good they are doing something very wrong.

      • charlotte

I don’t even know what happened to Dior, or at least I don’t remember their clothes looking so bad when they kept putting Marion Cotillard in them. I know she has a whole different look and aesthetic, but still.

    • fursa_saida

I wish they’d made this a double shot and shown what she was wearing on Letterman. She looked great.

    • CPK1

she is super f-ing adorable and talented and this whole pole dance has been a giant travesty. Heads should roll and they should have a big Dior fugliness bonfire

  • lobsterlen

Its become relative now. When compared to the other Dior clothes Jennifer has been wearing this is OK. But that’s it … just OK. Actually the dress is oddly cheap looking. Really Dior has nothing for this young attractive woman to wear?

    • marlie

Yeah, the bar is set pretty low at this point. This look is – at best – NOT eye-searingly bad.

  • formerlyAnon

Not flattering in the hips and midsection, but fortunately she doesn’t need to be flattered there. Personally, I’d like it better without the glimpse of bare midriff. Overall, this gets a meh from me.

  • crash1212

This is an ugly dress. Full stop. As for that style of shoe…when will it stop? WHEN??!! Her head looks great.

  • No, it’s horrendous. Champion sports bra, my mom’s old scarf, in a way to big v-neck. High school sewing project gone embarassing.

  • lunchcoma

Sorry, but I can’t get on board with this. The green and pink band with the bare stomach is atrocious. The shape of the black part of the dress reminds me of something I’d wear….to the office….as a woman who’s a decade older than J-Law. This isn’t something that a lovely 23-year-old movie star should wear to a premiere.

  • NDC_IPCentral

    Fancy gym bra. Good grief.

    • CPK1

reminds me of the Seinfeld where Sue Ellen Mishkie wears just a bra with a jacket

  • Which of the Bitter Kittens was it who suggested a Kickstarter to buy out her Dior contract? I am so on board with that.

    • boweryboy

I have a few hundred I’ll put down.

    • Shannon Beamer

I’m so committed to this idea that I’m willing to cut my wine budget and turn over the savings to Operation Free JLaw. In other words, shit is DIRE.

    • decormaven

C’est moi. She’s being held hostage, and we are too, having to look at these sad offerings every day. Do PR people look at this board? If someone is in the know on who’s running JLaw’s biz, please send them a link to what we’ve been discussing. Merci.

      • They must be working on the “any publicity is good publicity” model.

  • Chelsea

This is the worst premier outfit yet. I just…don’t understand. Girl, this is your moment and you are gorgeous. No reason for you to not be KILLING IT.

    • Trickytrisha

Yes there is a reason, and it starts with the letter D, is 4 letters long and ends with an R.

      • boweryboy

        Also: contractual obligation. Feh.

        • Chelsea

Does she (and/or her stylist) have ZERO say in which pieces are worn!? They cannot all be this fug. Or maybe they can given what we’ve seen on the last several red carpets….Le sigh.

          • marlie

Dior’s most recent collection couple of collections are almost entirely bad. So if they’re the only collection they’re working with, there aren’t too many decent options.

          • boweryboy

Check out Raf Simons’ collections for Dior. It’s all pretty much fug to the nth degree.

  • Lilak

BKs gotta pick up our torches and farm implements and storm the Dior castle …. Child is in somebody’s evil clutches.

  • Tricia

Man, I actually like this one. Not a fan of the sorta-bare midriff, but she looks classy.

  • Trickytrisha

Pretty face, and I do declare.. I believe I’m beginning to really like the hair now that they’ve found the right look for it. That bib/bra isn’t exactly doing her any favors, nor the shoes. The dress is cute, but dammit Dior, hang your head in shame for sucking at what you’re supposed to do brilliantly.

  • frannyprof

The green/white thingy looks like a be-laced sports bra. No thank you.

  • Recreate this Dior look at home with a black swim cover up and a sports bra!

  • boweryboy

If she must wear Dior, she should vehemently request something from the archive; something that is not designed by Raf Simons.

    • alyce1213

      Agree 1000%. But I don’t think they’ll let her.

      • boweryboy

She would look dreamy in one of Galliano’s creations. Or even a vintage Dior designed by Dior himself.

  • SugarSnap108

    UGH. Stop it, Dior!

  • Anna_Cecilia

Ah, J-Law, I have to ask, were the looks for your Hunger Games promo tour selected during an exuberant drinking game? If so, which one? I won’t judge.

I still find you hilarious, refreshingly genuine and endearing though!

Ditto the sports bra observation for me.

  • another_laura

Sorry, the tube top under the dress is just yucky.

  • Ashley Stacey

After what Dior has been putting her in lately, I will take it, even if it is too casual for a premier.

  • Erica_Vuitton

She looks 35. I can’t anymore Jen I just CAN’T!! The hair makes me, as the Cig Girls say, stabby!! At least in these pics you can see the chest part is green. Most other sites she looks like she has chest hair.

  • I actually like the green part of the bodice thingy, just wish the white part had been longer and more incorporated with the rest of the dress. Actually I would have liked the green to have filled that deep V. The white part adds nothing but distraction.

  • Stella Zawistowski

I’m getting sports bra with a weird bib on top.

    • Angela_the_Librarian

Sports bra with a poorly done ode to stained glass on top

  • xmixiex

How is this dress Dior? It’s like something I put on for the office, half asleep, and realized that my camisole didn’t cover my tummy once I got to work and had some coffee.

  • marlie

Well, I don’t hate this. The black part of the dress is simple, but that’s ok, all things considering. I wish the white part of the top extended all the way into the dress, rather than that random snippet of midriff showing. The green part looks like a panel that my grandmother would sew into a top because she thought it was too revealing (really… she did that). The shoes just look way too big. But, her hair and makeup look pretty fabulous.

SO… keep the hair and the makeup, ditch the cami thing, and the shoes, and add a pop of color in somewhere.

  • decormaven

Are the spurs on the shoes so she can kick herself for wearing this? Glad the uncles can muster a brighter response to this; I can’t. The fails on the RC are not adding to my warm and fuzzy feeling for this movie’s opening.

  • LeelaST

Looks like an athletic bra with modesty panel under a dress. Just no.

  • Imasewsure

I kind of like it although the color choices are a bit strange. The shoes do not work at all though… much more substantial and kick ass shoes were needed here

  • rondele

As a rule I don’t like those panels in dresses or tops, but in this dress it kinda works. The color at the top of the panel seems to work with JLaw’s coloring really well. Her makeup is great. The shoes make my feet hurt just looking at them.

  • gracedarling

I know the hair has been talked to death, but I just want to shear off that stupid giant fringe. A Mia Farrow/Jean Seaberg crop would suit her and the Dior a thousand times better – what on earth is her stylist smoking not to see that?

  • rh33

I’ll go along with everyone else…what’s up with Dior?

  • BrooklynBomber

Not digging this at all. I just want to see her in a pair of jeans and a shirt.

  • I think Kate’s booties and stockings (in black) would be nicer than the shoes JLaw is wearing.

  • Coolekat

Dior isn’t her thing. She looks matronly in everything. I don’t think the pixie cut is good for her either.

  • this seems way too casual for a new york premiere. with the sports bra look, it feels right for a photocall/day dress situation. i seriously thought that lace panel was gold. if the green was a little more declarative it might add some interest. how about a green clutch? crying for some color interest here.

    • conniemd

That was my thought. Girl this is your premiere in New York City. I expect a glam fabulous red gown. Not a sporty looking cocktail dress.

  • Daniel

Doesn’t she realize that nothing from Christian Dior is working?

  • ashtangajunkie

The first photo is very Robin Wright in ‘House of Cards’ to me. Hot for sure, but RW is significantly older than JLaw. I don’t mind this dress at all, but I am not a fan of those shoes.

  • Jeannie Shmina Greenwald

    Now her hair is cute!

  • KinoEye

My god, is it exhausting to see all the various ways in which they can make the most in-demand actress in the business look sub par (compared with what we’ve seen she can do in the past). Is Dior making this into some weird personal challenge? Bringing down JLaw, one outfit at a time? Someone needs to have a “come to jesus” moment with Raf Simons, because if he can’t make her look good, he’s failing at his job. Big time.

    • decormaven

      Amen and amen.

  • NoveltyRocker

I think the difference between this and the standard “pastel colored cami under black corporate workwear” outfit is a tiny bit of bare midriff and some inordinately expensive earrings. With that hair, it is a real slight difference.

  • Qitkat

What a dreadful dress. Sports bra ridiculousness.
Did anyone catch her on Letterman last night, trying to keep warm in an oversized pink comforter? Funny.

  • Aurumgirl

Looks like the wandering Elita bras I could wear in the 90’s. I was as flat as a board, but up they wandered anyway, so that it looked like I’d cut open my decolletage and the bandage just wouldn’t behave.

  • Call me Bee

Cute dress and killa shoes, but, to me, she just looks like a kid playing dress up in all the Dior outfits. She has such a girl-next-door look, and maybe she’s trying to get away from that, but lately her looks have just been wrong.

  • CatherineRhodes

Is she wearing a sports bra under her dress? What is wrong with the House of Dior? Their designer must be smoking crack with the mayor of Toronto.

  • tvmovielover

What are Dior and her stylist thinking? It is not terrible but why is this dress the choice for NY in November?

  • Dany

How does this look so dowdy? I really hate the short hair on her

  • appliquer

Hopefully the Dior contract isn’t a long one!

  • jw_ny

I like the reptilian green part …wish it woulda continued down the V. The white part looks like a sports bra. Think overall it’s lackluster for a premiere in NYC.

  • pookiesmom

This looks like a haircut smock over a fancy sports bra. No like.

  • girlsaturday

The gap of skin in front just makes the white bandeau read as ‘sportsbra’.

  • GillianHolroyd

In that last shot, she looks as tired of Dior as we all are.

  • quiltrx

This feels WAY too casual. And that white lining peeking out is giving me gout.

  • Sunraya

Hate that doily she has near her neck. No. Out.

  • guest2visits

I like a classic look for her but this is too safe, almost boring or too mature.
Her young, pretty face is much more fun than this dress could ever be.

  • unbornfawn

This is rather dowdy. She was wearing a much prettier dress on Letterman last night.

  • CommentsByKatie

Is Dior just terrible now? Why are all of these clothes hideous? It seems like throwing Dior darts at a clothing dartboard couldn’t have a poledance this consistently bad. I don’t get it.

  • KT

Not into this look at all. The black part of the dress honestly looks like something you can get at any store anywhere, save for the plunging neckline. I don’t understand the weirdly adorned sports bra thing at all, shoes look like an after thought, hair is aging. Nope.

  • Howard Sturrup

She does not dress well at all, am tired of seeing her sad outfits.

  • deb

It looks like a really fancy sports bra underneath. Am not on board with that….

  • NYCGlamourpuss

I mean, it’s not *bad*. That’s not a ringing endorsement by any stretch, but it’s okay. I’m mostly glad that she doesn’t look as odd-ball as some of her more recent ventures out.

  • mrspeel2

The white looks like a sports bra.

  • ThaliaMenninger

The dress looks like a shapeless sack, while the patterned part of the bandeau makes it seem as if she is exposing her hairy chest.

  • kbshee

At first glance I thought she got a back clavicle tattoo.

  • pepper76

I like that she smiles on the red carpet instead of giving FACE like she’s on a runway.

  • Lilyana_F

God, that hair is not working for me at all… why did they do that to her?

  • pdquick

Love the hair. Do we have to see the midriff in every single shot?

  • Katharina Ofelie

The green and white part kinda looks like a sports bra to me.. 😛

  • Is she still styled by Rachel Zoe? Cause she’s messing her style up. She needs to go back to her Calvin Klein days

  • Nicole

    I actually loved the dress!
although I would rather have her gone without a clutch or a different clutch and maybe some different heels.
