IN or OUT: Lupita Nyong’o in Chanel at the MoMA 2013 Film Benefit

Posted on November 06, 2013

She’s been riding a wave of T Lo + Bitter Kitten love ever since she came on the scene, but for the first time, we’re not entirely feeling one of her outfits.

Lupita Nyong’o attends The Museum Of Modern Art 2013 Film Benefit – A Tribute To Tilda Swinton in New York City in Chanel.

Chanel Fall 2013 Couture Collection

That is a whole lot of look to pull off and while we like some parts of it, others strike us as outside her wheelhouse. On the latter point specifically: the shoes and skirt. The shoes are clunky and heavy and the shape and length of the skirt isn’t suiting her. Slightly more fitted and maybe an inch or two longer and the proportions would work. But the shoes definitely have to go. Swap them out for something simpler and keep her away from the beartrap styles. And while we love the jacket, we really don’t love the neckline of the dress underneath it.

On the other hand, she’s gorgeous and it’s hard to make the claim that she looks bad. But for us, this is not an outfit that works for her. Kittens make the call:

Vote Now!

IN! WERQ that Chanel, bitch!

OUT! Girl, that’s not your Chanel.

In other news, y’all nitpicked the flaws in Amy Adam’s ’40s drag, but still voted it IN. Capricious Kittens.

Without the neck piece, I’d love it. The shoes are a little off, but I think it’s an IN.

    • Lizzyisi

I also say In, and think the spangly neck thing is ruining the lines of that jacket. I’ll agree with the idea that an inch longer and the skirt would be perfect. The shoes would not have been my choice, but I don’t hate them.

      • Aurumgirl

But if you take away that neck piece, she looks just like she’s a receptionist in a real estate office. She has looked a heck of a lot better in other clothes.

    • ampg

I’m with you – it works more than it has a right to. Skipping the belt was a good choice. IN.

  • shirab

The neck thing looks like it crawled up out of her jacket and is trying to strangle her.

  • tallgirl1204

Agree with TLo’s critique (a little bit longer skirt in particular would flatter her legs nicely), but must add that the neck thingie is just weird. Is it a halter dress with a jacket over? Some kind of necklace? I think that (because of the neck thingie) it might not be anybody’s Chanel. OUT.

  • leahpapa

DTNYJ. (Dress, that’s not your jacket.) She’s gorgeous, but it’s an out for me.

    • leahpapa

Actually, I’m totally confused. On the model it looks like a halter dress with a jacket layered over. But is it actually a dickey under a jacket and then a separate skirt? Or something?

      • Jessica Freeman

A CHANEL DICKIE. The world is ending, y’all.

        • zenobar

Upvoting this so hard. Chanel Dickie!

        • leahpapa

Oops! The only thing more mortifying than a dickie (Chanel or otherwise) is misspelling it. Thanks for the correction! ::goes to hide under rock::

    • karen jardim

Fully agreed. Ditch the jacket. It’s too long for her silhouette (height x width). With less fussy competing shoes, this most likely would have been a WERQ.

    • housefulofboys

Sad face, I have to agree. If only I could just look at her smile. Out.

  • antheapena

I love her & her looks so much I HATE to say “out”. It’s really the shoes more than anything that ruin this for me. I sau “out” but only for the shoes

    • Clueless_Jock

I think she needs more substantial footwear to balance the heavy top.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

In. Lower case – werq. Also, she has the most adorable smile.

    • marlie

I love her smile. It’s her best feature!

  • Rhonda Shore

She couldn’t look bad, but i don’t see greys as being the right color to fully set off her amazing looks. If this had been in golden hues, we might all be singing a different tune. I still say IN though.

  • Diego!

IN, WERQ from head to toe. You rock that Chanel, gurl!

  • MilaXX

IN. I don’t love the shoe. It cuts off her legs & make them look stumpy, but the rest of the look works for me.

    • Totally agreed. In because she looks amazing. But her shoes are totally wrong.

  • Tricia

IN – everything except the shoes. maybe a pair of good boots would’ve been better?

  • ojosazules

She pulls it off so much better than the model. This woman is just radiant. Not perfect, but IN.

  • Deb Oswald

The neck thingie is looking like a halter dress- same “fabric” as the skirt. I think that there is just too much texture there. And just no on the shoes….

  • I’m going with IN on this one.

  • RedRaven617

Gonna have to go with OUT on this. Just isn’t working for me.

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

In, but if she’d worn boots like the model, I’d say it was a WERQ,

    • broke&fashionable

Agreed! I think the skirt is too short and the shoes are obviously horrendous and my first thought was the model’s boots could have solve both problems.

  • MoHub

I’m just glad she lost the hip band on the jacket.

  • SewingSiren

I agree that the shoes aren’t great. But over all I think it’s an IN. I think she looks great in clothes. Kind of like Mara Rooney, she can work odd looks.

  • ChaCha_70

    In…but l’m overlooking the shoes. She’s still a diva.

  • Louisa White

It really does look like she’s wearing the World’s Fanciest Dickey, but I still think she looks pretty fabulous. IN

  • Veronica1022

With the tights and boots its adorable. With those shoes, its secretary goes to happy hour

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I like the jacket, the neckpiece on the dress is awkward.

  • madscntst

I don’t know…all I can think of when I see this is, “Man, I’d hate to be standing behind her at the airport TSA checkpoint.”

  • Lower case in because she’s gorgeous and I like the textiles, but I agree about the shoes. They are not her footiefriends.

  • I don’t love it but it’s more IN than OUT.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Is that a neck piece, jacket and skirt, or is it a halter dress with a jacket over it? If that’s a dress, I would love it without the jacket. Still, it’s a weirdly striking look, I can’t give her an out, so IN.

  • IN – she’s new, I’m not ready to be cruel yet.

  • OUT. It’s too android at the office in last night’s bar hopping shoes.

  • tereliz

IN! I love everything but the shoes. What else are you supposed to wear to see SWINTON?

  • Sunshine16

Out. I just can’t with the “winter on top, summer on the bottom”. Seems like that needs a mullet like name…She shines through it all though, love that girl!

  • DTLAFamilies

If I zero in on individual elements, it’s a no, but when you look at her overall, she’s so stunning I have to say IN.

  • Jangle57

The shoes are atrocious but if I block them from my view, then I think this looks ok (though agree a halter neckline with a jacked just looks plain odd) so a tepid IN

  • Nicholas

    She can do no wrong.

  • jilly_d

OUT. The neckline of the dress + the jacket are a bit much. Should have just gone with the dress; girl’s got the bod. The whole look just gets in the way of her beauty.

  • Anna Vasquez

IN. She’s still amazing, it’s just a slightly lower level of amazing than we’re all used to from her. She shouldn’t be penalized for hitting a 7 or 8 instead of a 10.

  • fiddlecub

I unabashedly love this. In from top to bottom.

  • altalinda

    Nevertheless, In.

  • Jessica Freeman

OUT, cus gorgeous woman an outfit does not make. The neck situation is the worst part of this for me, it’s like her skirt creeped up through her top and is choking the shit out of her.

  • boweryboy

The shoes stumpify her legs. If she wore a different shoe, employed the belt the model is wearing, and got rid of that weird choker thingy I would be on board.

As it is, she still looks light years better than the average ladystar so there’s that.

  • ashtangajunkie

Out, but it pains me. I would like to vote her IN just for the makeup, but I can’t.

  • bellafigura1

OUT but damned close. Longer skirt, or the way high boots. The shoes are killing her here.

  • IN. Modern Power Woman Power. I don’t know if this is a skirt or a dress, but I love the neck of the top and the jacket – it’s a different line. Plus, sparkle and some tweed…that is some Chanel heroin.

  • Nancer

In! Sure, your quibbles are on point, but still she looks fabulous!

  • MW

Different shoes are necessary but I still love it. In!

  • Jacqueline Wessel

in … not IN, but not OUT either … in

  • YoungSally

With the slutty boots it somehow looks less slutty. Go figure.

    • alyce1213

      I agree, I wish she’d done that.

  • ChrisP

IN despite all the problems listed above — radiance wins!

  • teensmom99

    IN. No need to explain.

  • prettybigkitty

Out. I think it’s oddly unflattering. The Chanel jacket over the short sequined dress with clunky shoes just doesn’t work in my opinion.

  • Christy Bishop Cricow

I say IN, if only for the waist up shot. She is really lovely, and that jacket is gorgeous on her.

  • mshesterp

IN. I’m ignoring everything south of the skirt that is doing horrible things to her legs. The neckpiece is weird, but she’s still adorable enough to make it work.

  • OpinionatedMtnGirl

Out – it looks like a cocktail dress with a suit jacket over it – Gurl, you are too gorgeous to wear this mess

  • filmcricket

An IN still, I think. That gorgeous smile does a lot. My biggest problem is the shoes/bare legs combo – this looks very tweedy and fall-like (in the fall! Hooray!) but bare legs and strappy shoes suggest the opposite. Some killer boots would work perfectly.

  • DB Ruberto

It took me several times looking at this, then had an “ah” moment where all the pieces fell in place. IN.

  • phrenk

Dislike the shoes, but love the way the jacket and dress work together, including the neckline. IN.

  • elemspbee

OUT. Agree with T’Lo’s smart assessment wholeheartedly. No denying she’s beautiful. But outfit’s not working.

  • MsKitty

I’m too blinded by the awesomeness to form a coherent thought. That counts as an IN.

  • Vickiefantastico

She is utterly gorgeous from the waist up. Unlike some of my fellow BKs, I actually love the neck thing, but I agree that the skirt is somehow doing her no favors, and the shoes just look painful. OUT.

  • judybrowni

Either the jacket or the dress, not together.

  • Shawn EH

    In! Black and gray coordination!

  • pookiesmom

IN, though those shoes are awful.

  • conniemd

In. Love the jacket on her. Skirt (or dress, whichever it is) is too short. Don’t mind the neck thingamajiggy.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Out. The outfit is fun but it’s doing more harm than good on her here.

  • julnyes

I think without the jacket and with a different shoe, this look could have been killer, but as it is – OUT.

  • Miss_Led

IN, I actually love this look on her.

  • marlie

It’s still an “in” from me, though certainly not Lupita’s best offering. Totally agree with the uncles; HATE the shoes, and the skirt could use a little extra length. But still, It’s an interesting look, she’s mostly pulling it off, and her makeup looks good.

Though, makeup companies need to come up with shimmer that doesn’t make ladies of color look ashy under harsh camera flashes.

  • Jaeda Laurez

I don’t like the neckpiece, and I would swap those shoes for a pair of black stiletto pumps, but other than that, I’m good. IN, but by a slim margin.

  • lesmaha

reluctantly, out–just barely. The shoes and skirt length are just wrong….

  • IN. I would love to watch a documentary that just follows her and Fan BingBing around while they wear fabulous outfits. Can we make that happen?

    • tereliz

      Kickstarter? 😉

  • Coleen

I’m saying OUT. It’s stumpifying. She can do so much better.

  • willworktomorrow

IN. Hard for her to go wrong, even though i agree about the shoes.

  • i thought that was a scarf around her gorgeous neck, but whatever it is, it’s got to go. and those perky little buttons are not her style. lose the buttons and add a belt, but not a big honking one like on the runway. killer red pumps and she’d be fabulous. IN, but i would say grey is not her best color.

  • kim bunchalastnames

with your exceptions, she’s still in. gorgeous woman.

  • carnush

I love the top half, not so much the bottom, which just looks awkward. But still IN because she’s stunning.

  • flamingoNW

  • leilah

  • Vtg Fashion Library

    Alexis Carrington reboot. OUT. ::sobs::

  • melanie0866

Hm… I didn’t realize that was the neck of the dress. That is awkward. And the shoes are stumpifying. So I’m going to say OUT. Just barely out, though. Threshold IN.

  • Qitkat

In. I love the unusual fabric of the skirt/dress. A pop of color would have been nice for the clutch and/or (different) shoes. Still, she is stunning.

  • LaSylphide

IN, but barely. When you think how she *could* look, this almost doesn’t make it.

  • Sunraya

I don’t like the neck piece, and where the skirt hits her legs. Other than that – I do like it.

  • ItAin’tMe

Out, just because the skirt looks worse than it needs to due to the shoes, which make her legs look so short.

  • blondie65

I agree about the skirt length and the shoes are really problematic, but everything else is so interesting & pretty on her, I have to say in.

  • webslice33

that face is gorgeous! waist up she looks good!

  • Eclectic Mayhem

I agree with everything TLO says – somehow these proportions are making this woman look short and stumpy – but dang it, that SMILE! She’s still IN!

  • Noah

I just don’t think I’m capable of voting Lupita Nyong’o out. Ever.

  • TropiCarla

In! Nitpicking be damned. I love seeing her gorgeous chocolate legs.

  • sisterb67

    A thousand times, IN!

  • ChelseaNH

The more I look at it, the less I like it. Keep the jacket and start over. (So that would be an out. There’s gotta be a first time.)

  • Tatiana Luján

this look is screaming for some tights and boots.

  • alyce1213

In, with reservations. That jacket is so gorgeous on her it’s in on just that.

  • Janet B

Neither the skirt length nor shoes are right for her legs.
I like the jacket on her.

  • Imasewsure

Interesting pieces and I even like the shoes but none of it works all that well here. Damn her for raising expectations so high! OUT

  • lalahartma

    It’s fine. In.

  • Richard Banger

IN! She’s fabulous. Hate the shoes though

  • Slanted & Enchanted

IN by sheer power of that jacket.

  • Kristobel

IN. She can wear whatever the hell she wants as long as she has that FACE.

  • Trickytrisha

In-ish. But thank god she didn’t wear the hat the model has on. Like Uncles said, there are some problematics here but overall she’s good. Ditch the neck brace and lengthen the skirt and this would be a winner. Oh yeah, different shoes too.

    • Anplica Fiore

Agreed. She looks very good and is an IN, but would love these changes! And talk about an appropriate dress for the venue!

  • Tracy_Flick

IN. I love all of it, except the placement of the buttons. Heck, remove them altogether. I see that the proportions aren’t giving her a super-willowy shape, but I think it’s actually curvy and sexy.

  • MaryAlice Finley Davis

  • KinoEye

IN. In the words of the great David Lynch, “That’s the kinda girl who makes you wish you spoke a little French!” Even if there are minor missteps here and there.

On a related note, I wanted to find out a bit more about Miss Lupita, and discovered she’s from Kenya, has a sister who was recently named one of the most powerful women in Africa by Forbes, and graduated from Yale’s drama school last year before being snapped up to star in “12 Years.” I love this woman.

  • LJCdoc

    Love, except the shoes. IN.

  • kat89

She’s beautiful, but who is she? (I feel so out of touch…)

  • OrigamiRose

IN. I think she pulled it off, beautifully.

  • crash1212

IN-ish. I think the boots and the belt make this outfit. Without those items it just looks kind of blah. I don’t hate it, but it could’ve been SO much better. Also – those shoes should be burned. With fire.

  • Joanna Carver

    Nope, she’s still flawless. IN.

  • aeb1986

total IN! i love this on her

  • Looks like something Grace Jones would wear to tea, so I love it.

  • Kelly

Definitely out. Not suited to her body type at all.

  • Danielle

How is this even a question? In. You know why.

  • jw_ny

OUT…the jacket is rather Barbra Bush-ish in style, and the dress neck rising up from under the jacket is just awkward. The skirt and shoes do not flatter her legs either.

Her face is stunning as usual tho, and almost tricked me into thinking the outfit was ok…

  • maretha2

IN. I think she looks great. Not my favorite shoe choice, but not enough to vote it out.

  • rkdgal

  • This is not sending me, although it’s not flagrantly awful or anything. She can do better. In fact, she HAS DONE better. OUT.

  • amanda lynn

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

IN because she took a risk and she came close to pull it off. Having said that, I would change the shoes too (some silver shoes, even if it would wound up being matchy, comes to my mind).

  • formerlyAnon

It’s an odd neck, but if I were to call out it would be for the leg-stumpifying effect of the shoes, and I just don’t think that’s the thing upon which I can hang an out. So, IN.

  • In! I hate those shoes, howeve.

  • jonesybj_notreally

gorgeous. not perfect but not out. In.

  • CheriCPat

Giving her an in because she knew to ditch the belt. But barely, because the shoes don’t go, and the neckline is AWFUL.

  • Eva_baby

IN. I am in agreeance with a lot of the other commenters. Love the look, love the make-up, hate the shoes.

  • nannypoo

She is fabulous. I’m just going to look at the jacket on up and call it an IN.

  • Lori

A very marginal In. The shoes seriously needed to go and I hate the neckline of the dress under the jacket, but she’s pulling this off better than anyone really has a right to and she’s gorgeous.

  • Myra Amler

In on the merits of the upper half of the outfit.

  • SophieCollier

You know, that kind of jacket over a halter type dress is a mistake, and those shoes are seriously clunky, but dammit, somehow she doesn’t look bad. It’s magic!

  • lamamu

IN! If the skirt was any longer, it would look like a really fancy ladies business suit.

  • Bailey Debruynkops

    those shoes make it out

  • kimmeister

It would require too many tweaks to make it sing, so I have to give this a small out. I’m still digging the matchy eye shadow on her though.

  • ThaliaMenninger

That neck is seriously weird. No. And I hate the shoes beyond reason. I vote OUT.

  • ballerinawithagun

Out because the skirt just doesn’t suit her. Have we only seen her in pants? Proportionally, pants, and I’m going way out on a limb here, yes, sequin pants, would have been fabulous for this event.

    • somebody blonde

Previously we’ve seen her in skirts, just not this length.

  • Not up to her usual WERQ standards. Needs a longer skirt and better shoes, but not so bad to be out, so lower case in.

  • another_laura

Out – for me it’s because of the neck piece and the shoes.

  • Sonja Brisson

She is gorgeous, but no woman should wear buttons where her nipples could/might/may sit underneath the outerwear. Are there no mirrors in celeb land?

  • Laura Livingston

    Glittery office drag. OUT

  • somebody blonde

In, but just barely on the strength of the jacket and face. That skirt and shoe combo isn’t really her friend, but it’s almost a really sassy and put together look.

  • Karen

    in, loves it

  • birdwithonefeather

It’s like an homage to Fritz Lang’s Metropolis and it’s awesome. Plus, is this or is this not an event at the Museum of Modern Art? And does she or does she not look statuesque, mod-bot and beautiful? I see the counterargument in those shoes, but this is IN.

  • MandyM

I think because she normally hits it out of the park, this looks less than stellar. However, this is a nice solid base hit, not a strike out. IN!

  • sleepycat

I rarely like Chanel, so this is an OUT.

  • GTrain

It’s interesting and fits her so well. IN

  • Lauren Hall

I love her makeup! Her face always looks gorgeous.

  • girlsaturday

Shoulda worn it with the cowboy hat…but IN nonetheless.

  • Madam Von Sassypants

    Love love love it. IN.

  • William Thill

Sadly, OUT. The outfit is the equivalent of a Fashion Mullet: Business up front, Party down below. But what a gorgeous woman.

What a gorgeous top half of the outfit. What a gorgeous bottom half too. The combo doesn’t work though.

  • ‘Becca’lise Deveaux

I just saw 12 Years a Slave and I can’t even look at her without wanting to burst into tears. IN because you’re PERFECT. *sobs*

  • bertkeeter

    Chanel… doing St John… doing Chanel…1990!

  • Cynica

    IN. Love her.

  • Reality TV Casting

    out out kids

  • Beth513

In, she’s just too stunning for even that weird neck thing and less than stellar shoes to keep her down.

  • DamH

OUT. Love her face but not loving the robotic clothes.

  • ankali

I fucking love this from head to toe, but I’ll concede that a different pair of shoes might have been an improvement. Regardless, IN with extreme prejudice. She is just stunning.

  • Alloy Jane

I don’t know who she is but I love love love this! Except the shoes. I kinda hate the shoes. Not exactly a WERQ but definitely an IN.

  • Samantha

    Completely IN, she looks great.

  • lyssalove31

    IN, yo.

  • Tashina Savage

I think if she had a different pair of shoes, this would all work. Those shoes make her legs look really short. Its an interesting look, and she is kind of werq-ing it, otherwise.

  • CatherineRhodes

Criticisms are all valid, but I’m going IN.

  • livesarah

I’ve been blown away every time until this one. I just don’t like the outfit, and that may be one of the very few colours that doesn’t look great on her.

  • AmeliaEve

Lower case out. That jacket looks just like my favorite Leslie Fay suit from 1990. Which, like all good Leslie Fay outfits, came with a removable dickie. Only Lupita’s dicikie was exposed to nuclear radiation and is now trying to strangle her.

  • E2_Remote

In. But those shoes are bleh.

  • NinjaCate

I want to say in, but those shoes… my EYES! And I do hate the neck thing.

  • Not applicable

    nipple buttons.

  • I can’t look at her and pay the least bit of attention to her clothes, she’s so beautiful with that smile that everything else fades into the background. She’s IN, but it probably doesn’t count since I’m discounting the rest.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

    IN! Love it!

  • syntheticvox

  • LeelaST

  • Pterodactyl111

IN. Work it, girl. Different shoes would be a plus, but she still looks fabulous.

  • guest2visits

It’s weird outfit for anyone but she looks wonderful in it. I think the shoes are a bad choice.

  • StarburstLady

  • samo_samo

In, but I’m really not feeling the shoes.

  • demidaemon

IN. I think she looks AMAZING!

  • Emmyllou

She looks utterly lovely. (You so fussy!) IN

  • Jenna Marie

Out. Gorgeous on top, unflattering on bottom. It’s the whole look that makes it an in… she’s missing it.

  • The shoes are awful and the dress needs another inch of length, but OMG she looks fab. In.

  • Black boots, and it would be a total WERQ.

  • kerryev

There is a scrolldown issue but holycats, that is the cutest face on the planet.
