IN or OUT: Julianne Moore in Tom Ford at the CFDA/Vogue 2013 Fashion Fund Celebration

Posted on November 12, 2013

In which T & Lo once again use their kittens to speak the hard truths for them.

Oh, who are we kidding? Since when have we been afraid to state an opinion. Here goes:

Julianne Moore attends the CFDA and Vogue 2013 Fashion Fund Finalists Celebration at Spring Studios in New York City in head-to-toe Tom Ford.

Tom Ford Spring 2014 Collection

This look does well on the high-impact front, we’ll give it that. She looks mostly pretty great on first glance. But one glance at the runway shot and we’re convinced that proportionally, this doesn’t work when you lower the hem. It’s a stiff, heavy-looking dress with a very high neckline (which also isn’t her friend here). It didn’t need an extra 6 inches of fabric tacked onto it. And while we can admit those shoes are pretty damn fierce (if not incredibly painful-looking), we think such an open shoe looks a little odd with such a heavy, covered-up dress.

Are we wrong here? Kittens, it’s time for you to weigh in.

Vote Now!

IN! Serving up some pre-Holiday sparkle! I’m feeling it!

OUT! She looks uncomfortable and that’s never stylish.

All y’all were basically in agreement that J Hud’s look was a disaster and it was subsequently declared OUT.

    • Rhonda Shore

She looks like a Christmas ornament. Needs a different shoe but IN!!! The color suits her…

      • Janet B

    • foodycatAlicia

IN – I like the longer length, although I think the neckline is a bit strangling and she could do with a darker nail colour. But it reminds me of the metallic cherry patent shoes I had when I was 4. I have never loved a pair of shoes more.

      • Jenna Marie

I agree. My initial thought was, “I’m so glad she lengthened the hem – I just wish the shoes were less heavy for this look.” Though that’s not to say the shoes aren’t perfect in general.

        • ampg

Me too, I think that the shorter hem would give off a “mutton dressed as lamb” vibe. But this looks great on her. IN.

      • JeanProuvaire

For a second I read that as you saying her SHOES reminded you of ones you had when you were four, and I was very alarmed.

    • Ms_Flyover

Is there a “Girl, that’s not your color?” I actually like the dress, but redheads have that added onus of not clashing with their hair.

      • Ginger_Strings

I actually disagree. I’m a ginger, and this color red really flatters pale skin with freckles and compliments red hair. It is more apparent when the hair is worn down. I also think the green backdrop is helping.

        • foodycatAlicia

I agree with you. Of course it depends on the shade of red (both hair and dress) but I love it.

        • Ginger

Another ginger in agreement with you. Redheads (for the most part) look really striking in red…but only as long as it has blue undertones instead of orange. I always get compliments when I wear red.

        • Ms_Flyover

Clash might have been the wrong way to put it. I think the color against her skin is fabulous, but it seems to be making her hair look – dull. And her hair is fabulous.

And trust me – I love gingers (the one in the avatar in particular.)

      • Jacob Bowen

I SO agree! I think Gingers can do red but NOT THIS RED! It makes her look like she has a mild case of rosacea.

    • Mazenderan

Out. Horribly unflattering, and the shoes look uncomfortable and cheap.

    • Danielle

In for the legs alone. Werq those freckles, girl!

    • Sobaika

IN – she looks fierce (although I wouldn’t argue against a different shoe).

    • MaryAlice Finley Davis

In – I think it would be better with the shorter him, but still in regardless.

    • charlotte

The shoes are indeed odd, but I have to give her an IN for not wearing a classic Julianne Moore dress.
It’s funny that she pops up right after Josh Hutcherson-she played his mom in “The Kids Are All Right” after all.

    • altalinda

Out. Too matronly, I think. Raise the hem a couple of inches and wear the hair down.

    • TAGinMO

IN from tip to toe for me. Raise the hem to runway level, and you’d have a major Mutton Dressed As Lamb situation.

Too bad the background is green foliage, because it bumps up the “Christmas Dress” levels to 11.

    • Inês Martins

      Love it, IN

    • kimmeister

The dress on her is IN, the shoes are out. I like the dress better at the length she’s wearing it, I never think the proportions look right when there is more dress above the waist than below the waist.

    • stardust462

Out, but more GTNYD. Plus the low-ish lighting doesn’t help. It doesn’t sparkle like it does on the runway.

Give this dress to Cat Deeley, please.

    • Cheryl

I love the fabric, all sexy robot, but the dress itself isn’t working for me. The shoes I love, but not with this dress.

    • Nazzzy

      IN, looks good to me

    • LeelaST

IN. I’m wavering, but it’s a beautiful dress and actually looks a little sci-fi on her.

    • Victor Beiramar Diniz

could do with a dark nail polish and probably a strong (lacquered?) lip, but still IN

    • Nikko Viquiera

    • homofascist

She does love a complicated shoe! On impact alone I will say IN.

    • teensmom99

IN. I actually love the proportions (& not only because it’s nice not to see too much thigh).

    • sleepycat

proportions are off both with ms moore and the runway version. This is a micro-mini if I ever seen one. OUT, but love the high-impactness

    • IraKi

The length and the shoes pose a problem indeed. . . HOWEVER I really like this dress on her. It is dramatic yet its silhouette is simple (let’s face it, complicated ones where never her friend). The colour is cute and even though it is reddish and she is a redhead, it suits her quite nicely. I see more good than bad… IN Attagirl

    • Fanny_Trollope

IN. Would be even more in with a darker lip and a more festive mani/pedi, but IN.

    • Daisy Walker

I want to like it, but I can’t.

    • Blair Sylvester

IN .I think she looks great

    • BobStPaul

      Out. Hate it.

    • Vickiefantastico

IN. This would be such a head turner at an event. The shoes might be a little off for the dress, but they’re so darned fabulous I’ll forgive it.

    • bellafigura1

OUT. Way too severe, head to toe.

      • formerlyAnon

    • elirt

Agreed – I thought it was decent until I saw the runway version. Much more impact as a mini.

    • jonesybj_notreally

want to love it (innate Julianne Moore bias)… trying… trying… nope. OUT.

    • Fordzo

My magpie heart just skipped a beat.

    • annabelle archer

In, I guess. But I could be talked out of it.

      • JDreesen

        here, let me help:

because i truly was liking it until i saw the runway version; immediate redirect to an Out for me. i simply do not understand all the UHL* going on with these dresses lately.

        * Unnecessary Hem Lengthening….what? IHL could be a thing. that is, i’m making it one. Starting now.

    • Fatima Siddique

GTNYD. Pack it up and send it to Heidi.

    • Slanted & Enchanted

IN. That dress is pretty fabulous and I’ve not yet forgotten her Frankendress phase, so I’m extremely impressed by this outfit.

    • Crystal

OUT. All I see is Spiderman.

    • lexilexi

I don’t like the look. OUT. She looks stumpy in this – it doesn’t flatter her figure – and yes, it looks so so very heavy.

    • Zubair Ghumro

In – Lets not forget the history of her red carpet disasters…don’t expect too much from her.

    • Trickytrisha

OUT. I think I’d love the dress, just on someone else. This isn’t flattering her at all. She looks like a matronly dominatrix at a Christmas party. I adore this woman, but just no.

    • Kate4queen

In its one of the better things she’s worn

    • Me Again

    • nannypoo

She looks bulletproof and 20 pounds heavier.

      • SRQkitten

        Yes! O.U.T.

    • CT14

I’m still grading her on a curve. This is not a frankendress. In.

      • understateddiva

It’s a color and it looks exciting, not drab and weird!! I agree, In.

    • KT

Too much dress for her – out. I do love the shoes though.

    • Tatiana Luján

      In! (hideous shoes, though)

    • hexiadetrix

She’s serving season’s greetings from the Planet Krypton. In.

ETA: Please let’s get rid of all the “Redheads Shouldn’t Wear Blah Blah” rules – we’ve lived through Miuccia Prada and pattern mixing, and the world hasn’t imploded. You should worry about whether it flatters your skin tone, not whether it “clashes with your hair”, and on Julianne this color looks fine. Double In.

      • DuBey2

As a Redhead, I say “Amen to that!”

    • WordyDoodles

Qualified IN. I totally agree about that hemline. She could work a shorter length! I’m not against the open toe, but I think a shoe with straight-across straps, reflecting the right angles in the dress, would work much better than the curved straps. All together though, I think the fit, color and style are mostly working for her.

    • NoveltyRocker

Not wrong and her makeup isn’t standing up to the dress either but it’s still pretty polished and eye-catching so IN for me.

    • ThatPeterG

She needs all the fashion encouragement possible, given her rather abysmal red-carpet track record. Give her this one. IN.

    • GSMSF

In! She looks great, and I’m sure it was even better in person without flashes.

    • Qitkat

Absolutely IN. Much classier than the runway length. This is a sparkle I love.

Completely unrelated: anyone remember ‘Sparkle Josh” from HGTV Design Star?

      • DuBey2

I do, and his disgustingly beautiful hair. Saw him on some other reality show later, but I think it was just for one ep.
I have vowed to never watch Design Star again, tho, after yelling at my TV and the judges’ opinions over & over. They seemed to be against taste, or maybe they think we, mere mortals, don’t have any taste and wouldn’t watch a design “star” unless they repeated a sob story ad nauseum and did so-so craft project-y designs. Rant over now.

        • Qitkat

I understand your rant and second it. It became a very predictable and disappointing show. I wanted the crazy professor with the wild hair to win last season.

    • Kayemwhy yo

Out! The shoes kill the dress. Hate the missionary hair. Now that I think of it if this dress was in green it would look better on her.

    • Joey Melliza

that is not her dress —- that’s better on R2D2 if he decides to join RuPaul’s Drag Race

    • OpinionatedMtnGirl

OUT – I love the dress but CANNOT with those shoes

    • MilaXX

OUT! The sibling took one look and called this look a walking blood clot & pronounced the shoe too complicated but also too open for the dress.

    • Sarah

      IN. Ruby Slipper Robot Fierce.

    • conniemd

IN. The shorter skirt wouldn’t look good on her. I think she looks great and bold.

    • demidaemon

The trapper keeper shoes are definitely a NO. And she wears them with everything, which is enough for me to give her an OUT, despite the fabulosity of the dress. It’s all about the details, Miss Moore. OUT.

    • decormaven

Not a fan of the heaviness of the look or the standup collar, but I do love the color of the dress against the hair/complexion. The straps on the shoes look painful. My vote straddles the fence.

    • Jangle57

Agree it would have looked better a little shorter length; hate the shoes, but in the grand scheme of things, I don’t think it’s the worse thing I’ve seen her in – she said damning with faint praise – IN

    • msdamselfly

IN I think she looks great

    • cakecakecake

    • NOLA_gal

      In. Sexy robot suits her.

    • marlie

I’m going to have to disagree with the Uncles. I think Julianne here looks fabulous. The dress is gorgeous, and I think the length is just right. I hate the shoes, but they look fine with this.

    • iloathethesea

IN, IN, IN. She looks like a robot. I love it.

    • Imasewsure

Out. The dress is stiff and does nothing for her. The shoes are great but all wrong and the hair is all wrong too. Glad she didn’t go gyno with this dress but it doesn’t work at secretarial either

    • rh33

IN. Dress looks good, shoes wrong.

    • frannyprof

    • Lauren Dorsee Dillon

In but barely. That dress makes her look heavy when I know she is not. Also, stop with the flat head hair.

    • Kelly

Out. Looks like an armored wetsuit.

    • cocohall

I understand why she added the length. She is a classy lady. But the extra length is just too covered up. She should have added the six inches, but lost the sleeves. Imagine this with arm and shoulder showing. Even the shoes might work then.

    • JauntyJohn

The original dress length would have looked too juvenile on her, I fear.

    • cleva1

Out. I keep getting stuck on the underlined breasts which I find odd looking.

    • trisker

OUT — it’s a gorgeous color on her. That’s about the ball game.

    • sunshine

Ooooof, out! That dress is wearing her like nobody’s business. It totally overwhelms her – SO heavy-looking and feeling. Love the fabric, but not that neck or length.

    • lunchcoma

I’m going to go with IN. It’s a very mature dress, but despite appearances, Julianne Moore is in her 50s. I think she can pull off a heavier dress and that the extra length was necessary. I don’t adore the shoe choice, but they’re not terrible. At this point, I’m giving out points to anyone who doesn’t wear nude pumps.

    • Vivi N

Nope. Not at all. Looks so much better with a shorter hem. Black booties would have rocked it out as well.

    • Heron

      In! J’adore!

    • MandyM

Out! This is Selena Gomez’s dress. I like the shorter hemline which Julianne was right to avoid and although I love the shoes, I don’t think she has the legs to wear them. She needs to send those along to Selena too.

I’m thinking the grid pattern is a problem. And for sure the nasty open shoes don’t work with that winter coat of a dress.

    • Anathema_Device

I see what you mean about the length. The longer hem would work if this didn’t have such a high neck.

Ah, well, I give it an In anyway. I like the fit and color. And this seems like a real different look for her, which I applaud.

    • jw_ny

    • Judy_S

Completely IN from me. I like this best of any photo of her I can remember, and it also wins a prize for today’s RC looks.

    • CommentsByKatie

I think it’s the coloring. This would have been wham bam on someone with pale skin and dark hair. it needs a high contrast face; her soft autumnal tones don’t have the impact needed for a dress like this. Pass this off to Kristin Stewart, Fan Bingbing, or Emmy Rossum and it would have been killer.

    • MW

In, she’s killing it and it’s the most season appropriate dress we’ve seen here in a while.

    • VicD

      IN. I like it.

    • Terri Terri

Out, But her face is gorgeous.

    • slightlybitterkitten

      She’s a walking ruby-red slipper. IN!

    • Lori

Out. I totally agree with TLo that the extra length through the dress off. I love that she tried it, but I think she should have gone another way.

    • SewingSiren

IN. Serving up the holiday sparkle. The mini is fine for the model, but the retro knee length is much better for Julianne. Agreed that it’s heavy, but it looks pretty flexible. Overall I think she looks great.

    • Monabel

      In. What Sewing Siren says.

    • somebody blonde

      IN. Looks good to me.

    • Plink

      Frankendress. Frankenshoes.

    • bertkeeter

I actually like the longer length…but with very sheer balck hose and less hideous shoes! At least it wssn’t one of FORD’s more unfortunate looks…like the overbeaded star cartoon c- -p!

    • Richard Banger

      FABULOUS! This is an IN!

    • DuBey2

IN. Love it and love to see a bold colorful look that’s still age appropriate. Personally, I love the shoes with it.
My only quibble (as others have said) would be a slightly darker lip and nails. And, the neckline could have been adjusted perhaps to a jewel collar, to help balance it overall and be more flattering. But I still love it. Best dress I’ve seen in the sparkle/bling category. As they say on PR: “I’d wear it!!”

    • ojosazules

Out. It must not, but the dress looks like it weighs a ton and would stand up on its own.

    • judybrowni

OUT: That red monster robot dress is eating her!

What pieces of Julianne are left have had the blood and color drained out of them by monster dress, which is wearing her.

    • lyssalove31

    • Tricia

LOVE the color on her, and I love her for wearing such a bold, shiny dress. But yeah, the shoes look weird and painful. It’s all an IN except that.

    • How to Faint

IN. I didn’t even notice the lower hem, so it didn’t distract from the over all look to me.

    • RussellH88

Spider Woman has come from the future to deliver a message.

    • quiltrx

IN. I think she looks fierce in a sci-fi movie kind of way.

    • NurseEllen

I vote IN. I hate the shoes–she does have a penchant for picking ridiculously complicated shoes, which do not flatter her, bless her heart–but the dress is real eye candy and I think it suits her. I’m glad she had it lengthened and I really like the high neck. Plus her hair is not cascading down her shoulders! The good here far outweighs the bad.

    • amber.

      in. it’s not tragic so.

    • In_Stitches

OUT. Severe hair and a high neck on anyone over 30 will never not look like Whistler’s mother to me.

    • LJCdoc

IN, although I despise her hair.

    • jason

      I give her an IN.
      However, I admit I’m grading on a curve….
      just ’cause I love her.
And she usually looks a mess.

    • sleah_in_norcal

IN, i say. the longer hem is giving me cheong-sam (or however you say it-you look it up if you care.) anyway, shanghai nights and all that. she does love her bear trap shoes. i’m glad she didn’t try the shorter length. we all reach an age when our knees are better left alone.

    • elzatelzabelz

IN- It takes guts to be disco fabulous. I’m not 100% on board, but points for wearing it with attitude.

    • AnneElliot

OUT. It looks like a hideously uncomfortable version of Dom’s unconventional look from the PR Season 12 finale. Or Dorothy’s ruby slippers from the Wizard of Oz.

    • filmcricket

IN. I’d like to see the hem raised a tiny bit, but I actually think it’s too short on the runway version – all that heaviness up top makes it look weird proportionally.

These are complicated shoes I can get behind. I do agree she biffed it on the details a bit: don’t care for the make-up, and you can’t see it here, but she’s got one of those tipped manicures that makes it look like you’ve got dirt under your nails – ugh. But those are small nitpicks.

    • anneland

IN. But not perfect. I thought the exact same thing before I read your comments: raise the hem like the model OR change the neckline.

    • ItAin’tMe

Out. Hate the length of the dress and the shoes make her feet look huge, ankle straps make her legs too short. Also, I think she could use some hose and a closed toe.

    • another_laura

I think the dress is okay – would like it a skosh above the knee – but I really wish she would give up on the big strappy gladiator-y sandals. Color is good on her. In, by a nose.

    • shayna61

Good lord that’s so out it’s in orbit. Blech. As my bubbie would say, she has taste in her tuchus.

    • kerryev

In. I think she looks like a badass.

    • amanda lynn

      IN; i like it.

    • Robin Murray

In. Fabulous from head to knee. Sandals are a mistake with this mosaic beaded dress, as are freckled bare legs. From knee down I would change to sheer black hose and an interesting mid-to-high heel pump.

    • formerlyAnon

      Straight from the hip? OUT.

She’s too old for anything that accentuates a hard, angular look. And between the severe hair and the reflecting rectangular shininess of it all, this does that.

(But that’s not harsh. You should have heard me on the topic of some of the slam poets I heard tonight. Yes, I may have had a drink. Or more than one. )

    • Levedi

IN! She looks awesome – I like the hard shell effect on her for some reason. It’s working.

    • GTrain

I agree that the length ruins it. OUT

    • Nimith

In! She’s rocking that ‘bride of Dracula’ look.

    • Sabin

Completely out. It looks like someone student’s attempt to conceptually an exoskeleton. On a really stumpy insect.

    • E2_Remote

That dress looks like it was designed by the same guy who does Daft Punk’s helmets. That being said, I like it – IN!

      • PastryGoddess

    • Call me Bee

It’s a cool dress–love the ribbon detail. But the shoes have got to go. I’ll give her a baby IN for the dress.

    • maretha2

IN. The color looks great on her and the style is in her wheelhouse. I’m glad she lengthened the hem.

    • Alexis Peñafuerte Wenceslao

      IN. This works.

    • oklund

OUT. She just looks so pale and sickly – the make-up is all wrong. And the dress is so loud and heavy, it looks like armour.

    • BookManFilm

      julianne moore is everything.

    • Claudia Fernandes

    • 3boysful

Gee, is there no pleasing me? ON this one, the hemline needs to come up. But I love the shoes–like how they echo the black lines in the dress. Qualified In.

    • yby

all these glittering- glow on her neck, which is not flattering for an aging ginger (rapid aging skin is our problem).

      • yby

    • Random Compliments

      IN. Luv. huh.

    • Diego!

This may be her ‘Wrecking Ball’ but it’s an IN to me. She is sparkling! LOL xD

    • Catiline

Despite some quibbles, I think this look is just plain cool. IN.

    • Jessica Freeman

In, but barely. I love that she’s dressing herself better and taking risks that often pay off overall.

    • flamingoNW

Well, I see your points, but I still vote it a barely IN.

    • BayTampaBay

Your right TLo. Cut six inches off the dress, add booties and this would work.

      Color is great.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Yeah, it just looks like it must weigh a ton. Not a good look.

    • carnush

I agree about the hem, but still IN.

    • mjude

      I must say IN

    • random_poster

IN — the dress and the hem length suit her, and I think she makes the dress look classy. A shorter skirt on her would go mutton-dressed-as-lamb. I’m no fan of the shoes.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

In. I saw this yesterday and I love the glitter and the color on her. The issue is the length on both ends. At her age she needs a slightly longer hem, although with her stems I would have taken the length up another two inches. The real issue is the neckline. Without the high collar it would really rock. It’s a gorgeous dress but it reads ‘sexy secretary’ way too much.

    • Cousin_Rose

Don’t like the color. She had to hide her hair to not clash horribly. Stiff and ugly shape. Out.

    • sagecreek

OUT. Those ankle straps were a big mistake.

    • Lorelei_D

    • amanda siegelson

i think it’s a killer dress. i do agree it highlights a neck problem that otherwise would go unnoticed – but i’m definitely voting IN.

    • Little_Olive

      Too harsh for her. Mmmno.

    • crash1212

OUT. For all reasons stated. Pretty color for her thouth.

    • Melanie Suzanne

Before I saw the runway version, I thought the hem was too low and neck too high for this dress to work. Complete OUT.

    • MissFern

you are not wrong. my poor julianne.

    • valerie747

She looks intentionally covered-up to me. I wonder why.

    • gigi kennedy

OUT. that is Tootsie’s dress for sure…and no one else’s

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

In. I think she looks great.

    • lalahartma

I think it is fine. A half hearted in.

    • OffToSeeHim

OMG, SO out. If you don’t have the legs for it (or you’re too old to wear it as-is) release it out into the world to find somebody who won’t have to lengthen the hem six inches. And WTF is with her HAIR??? Doesn’t she have a lot of money? I feel like sending her a mirror.

    • Deborah Lipp

In! She looks put together and not crazy. She’s wearing color. It’s not a Frankendress. Sure, I’m grading on a curve, WHY NOT?

    • tereliz

In. I can’t hate. She looks pretty. But the length is making this blingy dress dowdy.

    • Jennifer McGuire

Out – the sparkle is great, but the dress doesn’t suit, and she looks .. constrained. Where’s her amazing hair? Agree the shoes are fierce.

    • Shawn EH

So very IN! By avoiding the slut cut, she turned onto rich bitch, and when is that ever bad on the RC? Tom Ford is her dear friend.

    • melanie0866

IN but I agree about the hem length and the ankle-high shoes. Stumpifying.

    • barbarienne

My first thought was “Damn, those proportions aren’t working on her.” Only after that did I see the cool factor of Julianne Moore in a ruby-crystal dress.

Since my first reaction was negative, I have to go with OUT.

    • Aidan B

In! Don’t have the time to defend, I just like it.

    • lesmaha

      In–she’s trying….

    • Thundar99

IN. This is a woman whom, while i love her for her acting chops, has very little sartorial success on the red carpet. For her this is a home run.

    • SusannaGA

Clearly out. She has such a delicate beauty — this is just too dark, heavy and harsh for her kind of gorgeousness.

    • Dan_In_NYC

I have quibbles, but overall in. Black hose would have done wonders here.

    • dashwoodstole

Out, it looks like she is encased in the dress rather than wearing it.

    • Colin

    • ThesisMonkey

The neck is weird, but the color makes this an IN for me.

    • AndreaSkates

Take off the sleeves along those raglan lines, and this is perfection on her: she is smart to know that the runway one is too short for anyplace that isn’t a runway. But I still give it an in for the amazing color on her.

    • lizajane1776

In. She could use a little leg make up (since it is apparently no longer acceptable to wear nude hose), but it’s gorgeous otherwise.

      • paginatrix

I’m sort of loving the freckled legs.

    • lilazander

IN!I love the colour on her.

    • MaggieMae

Ehhh….I can’t decide. I don’t hate it, that’s for sure. My first reaction was the dress is too heavy looking and is overwhelming her. The next reaction was a huffy “Well, why CAN’T Julianne [implied: at her age] wear that if she wants to?!”

    • StillGary

IN — great color on her and she took a risk!

    • Victoria Pavlova

I like this one on her. Dramatic as hell. IN.

    • Renaissance_Man_ATL

IN! I think she looks great. She needed the extra length or she’d be ‘hot Cougar on the prowl’. The shoes work too. They’re just complicated enough without over doing it. I’ll just add, I love her even more after her fabulous turn in JGL’s “Don Jon”!

    • Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

      OUT because she looks uncomfortable.

    • lrhoff

This looks like armor, so a heftier shoe would be better suited. Your caution is well received here, boys.
