IN or OUT: Jennifer Lawrence in Christian Dior Couture at the “Catching Fire” LA Premiere

Posted on November 19, 2013

“WHAT IS SHE THINKING?!?!?” shrieked Lorenzo dramatically, as Lorenzo is sometimes known to be. “I don’t know…” Tom replied. “It’s not boring or awkward, at least.”

Jennifer Lawrence attends the premiere of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” in Los Angeles in a Christian Dior couture dress Dior paired with a Roger Vivier clutch, Brian Atwood shoes, and Anita Ko jewelry.

Christian Dior Couture Fall 2013 Collection

We’re both in agreement that she looks like a trapeze artist who got caught up in her own safety net. Where we disagree is whether this is bold and attention-seeking in a good way or bold and attention-seeking in the wrong way. She can pull it off, but does it really suit her? We were asked the other day what our least favorite trend is right now and we said in unison, “Sheer dresses and panties.”

But her hair looks cute, right?

Oh, to hell with it. Kittens make the call:

Vote Now!

OUT! Ridiculous.

In other news about opinionated people being judgmental (i.e., our beloved readers), Y’all debated Julianne Moore’s disco Christmas soldier dress at length and ultimately decided that it was IN.

  • Irish Rodriguez Reyes

    I say “IN!”

    • Darren Nesbitt

I love the photo of her looking down. it’s like Lady Gaga WERQ. but If I saw her walking around I would think she looked crazy.

      • Irish Rodriguez Reyes

Girl looks fierce so you gotta give it to her!

  • Carina

    • Sobaika

      There is no other answer.

      • kmk05

Is it weird that I hate this dress with the fire of a thousand suns, but I insanely think she’s pulling it off? Those 3rd and 4th pics look damn good!

        • Sobaika

Yes. Please consult Our Ladies of Tilda, Lucy, Zoe, Kerry, Helen, and Lupita. They will show you the way.

          • kmk05

They wouldn’t be caught dead in this!

I’ve actually looked at the pictures again, and that dress is even more ridiculous. Her face and hair look miles ahead of the first few premieres, though, and she is wearing that netting ‘gracefully’.

        • That’s the thing about this look – she’s pulling it off.

        • fursa_saida

This is why I wish they would have just given her a lined skirt. Would it have been a relatively ordinary ballgown-type dress? Yes! Would she look really great in it? Almost certainly, given how she looks in this!

    • Kristin McNamara

I feel like this has been one of the worst poledances (sum total) that we’ve seen on this site in ages.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

It’s time for a intervention with JLaw and her reps, to get her out of Dior and into an affilation with a designer whose clothes would work for her.

    • Clueless_Jock

      Truly a major horror.

    • Cz

Didn’t Kristen Stewart do something similar during her Twilight pole dance?

  • ShiOllie

Out. Oh dear. Oh dear oh dear oh dear.

  • Blair Sylvester

Much like the Mosquitos swarming around her at the premiere she is OUT

  • Clydette Wantland

From the waist up, very cute. Waist down, no thanks.

  • KingCrazy

I’m conflicted. On one hand I feel like it’s not her dress, but on the other hand I can’t say she looks bad.

If there was some lining under the skirt, or just less granny panty, it would be an absolute win from me.

    Still love her.

    • JudyP

Yes. This. I hate hate hate the sheer over granny panties, and if the skirt was lined I would love it, but at the same time, she faces body criticism and to have the balls to wear this fairly well (I say fairly not because she looks bad- it’s just that no one wears this look well because it’s a bad look) is kind of rad.

      • NOLA_gal

Nailed it. It’s horrifying in and of itself, but the fact that she wore it considering the amount of fat shaming she gets (!!!!!) is fantastic. A real middle finger to the Hollywood body-dictators. Her hair and makeup look gorgeous. Ugh.

        • Constant Reader

Seriously? She gets fat shaming??? The only reason I was even slightly conflicted about giving her an out is because her legs and figure are so great the she’s actually pulling off a look I loathe. Now I’m just annoyed (not at you, Nola-gal, at Hollywood).

          • NOLA_gal

She talks about it frequently in her interviews – apparently she’s been told repeatedly that she’s too fat for certain roles, and would be cast more if she just lost weight. Her response seems to be a universal middle finger, which I have to imagine is at least partly responsible for this choice!

          • Spreecord

And for that hearty middle finger, I give this an IN on principle, although I really hate this dress. A lot.

          • fursa_saida

This is ridiculous on its face for the body comments, but it also sort of cracks me up because clearly, Jennifer Lawrence is having trouble getting parts and needs these idiots’ advice. Poor struggling girl. Can’t get a juicy role anywhere. No recognition.

I’m sorry, I’ll stop and go laugh by myself now.

          • NOLA_gal

Right? But I’m guessing it was a much bigger deal pre-Oscar.

    • ampg

So even though I voted it out, I agree that she does as well as she possibly could with it, and I’m impressed in that respect. It’s still a total WTF look, though.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Definitely a WTF look, but I will agree that she’s working this about as well as it can be worked.

  • SewingSiren

    Shrieks and runs.

  • nyazgirl

    Love love love

  • Angel Ratliff

  • WildHyacinth2

Out. Way out. So far out that we’re not even in the same galaxy anymore. But I do agree on the hair being cute.

  • She totally is channeling some Betty Hutton legs. The dress is terrible, but I keep hearing how she’s an actress that eats and not only do I now believe her, I hope she’s changing the dictum of the shape of beauty.

    • Mary229

She’s blond. White. Tall. Lean. Big boobs.

I like Jlaw. But can we please stop acting like she in any way challenges the socially and culturally accepted standards of beauty?

      • effie

i’m glad someone else said it. it needed to be said.

      • Yesterday, I would have agreed. Looking at her thighs, though, while I would die to have them, they are significantly meatier than the muscled starling legs that are presented on a regular basis. It’s a step.

        • Mary229

Her thighs are beautiful and they look way more like my thighs than many of the other starlets. She’s beautiful and I support her. I just feel like we need to keep perspective here.

        • I think you’re falling into the same trap that people who called her fat did. You’re seeing an actress with a tiny little bit of meat on her bones (in comparison to other actresses) and assuming she’s larger than she actually is. She’s wearing Dior sample sizes on the red carpet, which means she’s near- model-skinny. At the very least, she’s thinner than the vast majority of the population out in the real world.

          • I have no illusions about her, me and Marilyn Monroe celebrating our size 16 club. What I can see the potluck of bones and sunken eyes or biceps and abs wearing the most delicate, sometimes gorgeous but always expensive, fantastic gowns in the world and on an aesthetic level, I’m flummoxed. This is almost the opposite. While the pairing of a hard garment on a soft(er than the average A-List) actress is still not aesthetically pleasing, a break – however tiny – is much appreciated.

      • Celandine1

Oh please, there are many ways to challenge the socially and culturally accepted standards of beauty and we see them regularly on this site. Since a major standard shoved down the throats of women by fashion magazines, runway shows, Hollywood, etc. is to be so thin your body literally can’t menstruate I will gladly say thanks to JLaw. Critics have called her fat. Sorry you can’t see this.

        • Mary229

I “see” plenty. I’m a size 6 myself with a 36D chest and “meatier” thighs just like Jlaw who won pageants as a younger woman and dealt with my own fat critics on anon message boards bc I wasn’t a size 0. I battle to stay lean. Like many women, I struggle with my body image. I’m not tall or blond nor leggy. But I ::am:: white so I know that despite this my beauty is privileged to some degree. I’m happy to see a healthy size on the red carpet. I like Jennifer Lawrence. But I also know that the reality is that a beautiful, tall, blond woman with a big rack is not breaking the mold that Western standards of beauty have laid down for all of us. I’m happy that she’s healthy but until we can celebrate a woman who doesn’t meet those Western standards of beauty in the same capacity—we still have a long way to go.

      • formerlyAnon

I agree, but only if she keeps the extra muscle & subcutaneous fat when she’s 30. At her age, a rare few get away with looking healthier. They often then drop 5+ lbs every decade until they’re overly lean, whilst having injections and surgical interventions try to keep a bit of a padded look in the requisite places.

        • Mary229

But I’m not sure that’s really a fair assessment of women over 30. Our bodies change and sometimes we don’t hold weight the same way over 30 as we did when we were 23. There is also the fact that childbirth and other health factors affect your body and how you carry your weight. You also have to take into account that there is WAY MORE pressure on women over 30 and they are held to a much harsher standard—especially in Hollywood.

          • formerlyAnon

I may not have hit the mark in assessing women over 30, because I was really only trying to describe what I see as a frequent response women entertainers take to their aging, especially if they’ve been able to ‘get away with’ carrying a few more pounds than the single-digit-body-fat-percentage industry ideal during their teens and twenties.

I agree women over 30 endure much more pressure – and have to compensate, in the entertainment industry for no longer looking 23 – which is why I will give Ms. Lawrence credit for “challeng[ing] the socially and culturally accepted standards of beauty” if she’s still wearing this healthier version of the norm in 12 or 15 years. I’d bet money, though, that if she’s still competing to be an A-list actor, she’ll “discover” hot yoga or some trendy sport and some trendy health-focused and restrictive eating program and emerge at 30-ish 10 to 15 pounds thinner than her current, perfectly attractive weight.

      • filmcricket

I was just thinking this this morning. On the one hand, it’s good to have a new A-lister, current Oscar winner, and all-round stunner taking Hollywood to task on its ridiculous beauty standards. On the other hand, there’s only so much one wants to hear from the tall, blonde, 23-year-old about how hard it is to measure up. It’s going to be a tough line for her to walk, and no matter what she does, someone will be unhappy about it.

        • Mary229

And let me be clear—I’m not trying to crap on her. I truly do like this woman and I wish her the best. I like her acting and I think she’s beautiful. But she’s also a 23 year old woman who has been getting roles that she’s TOO YOUNG for that should be going to women in their late 30’s/early 40’s (her role in american Hustle?? Silver Linings?) bc Hollywood is so ageist and sexist. She’s privileged bc she’s blond and YOUNG and busty. I’m THRILLED to see a curiver body and I like her very much. But I feel like it’s important to keep perspective. It’s NOT her fault. But it is what it is.

          • ampg

Yes to all this. I appreciate that she actively and vocally pushes back against her critics, but at the same time she can do that because she knows she won’t lose her job over it.

          • LadyLuck777

When Octavia Spencer wears this dress, I will sing hosannas.

        • RebeccaKW

I agree. Yes, I’m happy to hear her say it’s ridiculous that she’s told she’s fat and she refuses to stop eating whatever she wants so she can weigh 10 pounds less or whatever. On the other hand, most non-Hollywood women who eat whatever they want are much larger than she is and don’t have the luxury of saying “fat? I’m a size 4! You crazy.” or whatever.

      • Jennifer Schiller

THANK YOU! I’m sure she’s cool enough, and I really loved Silver Linings Playbook, but she doesn’t exactly blast away stereotypes. And to be fair, even if her thighs are a little meatier, we don’t exactly see everyone’s on full display like that so it’s hard to tell (plus the shape and cut of the jumpsuit I think plays up the size).

Good for JLaw to stand up against unreasonable body image expectations, but I fail to see how the nature of this dress is designed to do that and not just grab attention as a pretty blond starlet showing off a still largely unattainable body type. Overall to me it’s just a bad dress, venue-inappropriate, and if Miley wore this it wouldn’t be up for discussion. Also that lipstick color is ick with the whole look.

      • AnaRoW

It’s not so much that she “challenges the the socially and culturally accepted standards of beauty” so much as she challenges the Hollywood-accepted standards of beauty. This is the same industry, after all, that once ridiculed Drew Barrymore for being fat when she’s probably never been larger than a size 6.

        • I don’t see how she’s challenging anything. As noted, she’s a tall, buxom, blue-eyed blonde with a Dior contract and several hundred magazine covers under her belt. She’s working exactly within the standard paradigm for beautiful blonde actresses.

          • ana170

She’s only challenging things in that she looks healthy (Buxom had been out of style for years) and hasn’t fallen into the trap a lot of young actresses fall into of starving herself in order to keep the media and public off of her case. I seem to remember Lindsay’s problems started out in that way. She was a healthy weight but developed an eating disorder because it was determined she was fat.

          • Mary229

As a woman with a huge chest I can assure you that no…buxom is not out of style. Not with men. And let’s face it—in Hollywood and media—all that really matters for women is how MEN perceive you. Your entire worth is defined on how f***able you are perceived to be. If anything, I’d say men’s magazines and our entire culture still perpetuate this idea that only women with big racks are really “sexy.” Women with small chests are still painted as less sexual.

          • Yes, as a small chested lady, I agree with this. My female “friends” take every chance they get to remind me that I am less than perfect because I have small boobs. Men don’t really seem to care though, at least in my experience.

          • bluefish

Something about Jennifer’s looks and aura remind me of two lovelies from the past — the amazing Dorothy Malone and the equally fab Judy Holiday. She’s a warm, curvy blonde who manages to not channel Marilyn — And I love me some me some Marilyn for sure. And the trailer for “American Hustle” has her looking absolutely amazing. I LOVE her in this Dior — the gown fabric alone is to die for. Beautiful. Cheers to you gentlemen … I can see you both very soon as Columbia University Profs … Seriously.

  • OUT. Fucking out. This entire fucking Catching Fire pole dance is out. Fuck!

    • Jessica Freeman

I gasped at how bad this is. How bad it’s all been. I feel like we’re being punked.

      • Have you seen the shitery that is Jena Malone? I am unhinged at this point.

        • Jessica Freeman

Jena is just trying to convince us she’s not that little girl from Stepmom anymore. WE GET IT.

        • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

You poor dear. Can I get you a large, alcoholic beverage?

          • Yes, PLEASE

          • decormaven

Not fair unless you pour shots for all. This is some serious sad fashion.

        • MilaXX

Her dress is even worse than the Jimmy Fallon look.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

The person who designed Jena Malone’s dress ought to be beaten with a bolt of illusion netting and then rolled in adhesive glitter.

      • Darren Nesbitt

It is “bad” but she doesn’t look bad right? Wouldn’t this be great on Gaga or someone more out there?

        • Jessica Freeman

This would be great in a trash can that was on fire.

          • Kristin McNamara

I agree. It would be great if the dress could just *catch fire*.

Eh? Eh?! 😉 I’ll be here all week.

    • Carleenml

oh good. I wasn’t the only one saying FFS.

    • Nicholas

If the Catching Fire pole dance were a band, they’d be The Twilight Sad.

  • Funkykatt

At least she added the top part. It’s gotta be a joke.

    • Shannon Beamer

This was my exact thought. And if the best you we can say is “well, at least she isn’t baring her breasts like the model,” I must declare this OUT.

      • Alloy Jane

But for that she might as well have just worn the bustier and skipped the ugly net dress. Then it’d be more “Cell Block Tango” than “padded cell.”

  • Aidan B

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say IN. The shape of this thing is so much better on her than anything else she’s been wearing that I’m willing to forgive the fact that it’s see-through. And, she’s wearing a bodysuit, not a bra and granny panties, so that’s in improvement. Hair and makeup look great, too.

  • TheLaurenJean

Good lord, do you need to ask? OUT.

  • Jen

out. the netting looks like a horrible material I would expect to find next to the window of a battered old student apartment. I hate to say it, but at least when KStew wore a dress like this the outer material was quite nice. Nevermind, she’s been doing ok the rest of the time IMO.

  • Maria

  • Julie Chase

  • LaSylphide

    Outoutoutoutout. So there.

  • CeeQ

OUT. It’s awkward and at some point during this photo op, even she thought so.
But dang girl, that ass is tight. Also: loving the hair!

  • fungstyle

IN. It’s not boring, she looks like she’s having fun. And: DAT ASS.

  • Jessica Freeman

    Out because everything.

  • In_Stitches

OUT, I’d prefer she ditch the ‘dress’ and just wore the body-suit. Somehow, I imagine it would look more modest (and flattering).

    • marlie

As-is, it looks like she’s on the red carpet in her bathing suit and some sort of flimsy coverup.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

That skirt is a mock-up of a lampshade to cover the planet Jupiter.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

If JLaw had worn just the body suit, with a great blazer, that would have been more interesting on the RC.

  • Julia

OUTTTT but only to the dress. I will never hate on dat ass.

  • Richard Harper

OUT. If the skirt were lined it would have been quite charming.

  • somebody blonde

God, OUT. It’s not her look. It’s just not.

    • Sara

To be fair, I don’t think it’s anyone’s look (which begs the question: why do designers keep making them?).

      • somebody blonde

I can imagine Gaga wearing it and it not looking insane. It doesn’t really work as fashion though, you’re right.

  • xmixiex

god, if only the bottom half were lined- picture it- this could have been pretty cool. but god, no.
I also wonder if it’s NOT quite as sheer without the flashbulbs. Regardless, when one is dressing for the red carpet, one needs to consider flashbulbs.

    • marlie

I get the impression that this is SHEER, like, supposed-to-be-able-to-see-nipple-sheer.

  • Ms. Schmidt

I would love it were she wearing something more than granny panties underneath. Even so, I think it is definitely bold in the right way.

  • hmatz

The second the first picture loaded, I audibly let an out an “oy.” That can’t be a good sign. Out. Major out.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

    Are you fucking kidding me?

    • TrixieConQueso

I think that is what the Lady in Pic #7 is saying and also, “Dear Gawd I need a Vodka Stinger to endure this ‘fashion.'”

    • Kristin McNamara

I love that your account photo is of the Dowager Countess, because it made me read this comment in her voice and then I laughed out loud. “Are you FUCKING kidding me, Cora? Oh for fuck’s sake, OUT, I say!”

  • hughman

“Our new boneless. Zips up the back, no seams!”

  • VFinn

OUT. I hated this as soon as I saw it — it was instantaneous and visceral. Still shuddering…

  • sarah jacobs

Maybe I have turned into an old lady …but there is something to be said for a good slip. There is a long tradition of wearing a sheer dress over a slip. The interplay between the two ( the naked and unnaked) is oft times charming and makes the total look better than the sum of it’s parts. This trend of wearing nearly nothing underneath was at first kind of interesting for the shock value, but has been so over done that it has gotten deeply boring.

    • Jessica Freeman

This is just a glorified Dior bathing suit cover up.

  • Louisa White

I want to love it because I love her and I actually think she looks pretty great–but SHE looks like she feels so uncomfortable, it’s an OUT for me.

  • Can she pull it off? Yes, she can. She’s young, at the top of her powers. Is this the right venue to try to pull it off (ie: big LA premiere of your flagship movie, after getting you Academy Award) No, it isn’t.
And for that, and nothing else it’s an OUT

  • Alexina04

    OUT. OUT OUT OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • EverybodysStarling

    Yay! I got x-Ray vision!

  • Sara

This is horrid. Does her stylist hate her? Does Dior hate her? Has she stopped caring? Does she think this actually looks good? SO many questions. OUT.

    • marlie

I don’t for a second think that she thinks she looks good in most of the Dior looks that they’ve been putting her in. In almost every picture we’ve seen of her on this poledance so far, she’s consistently looked slightly uncomfortable, which doesn’t seem to be the norm for a ladystar who otherwise seems so confident.

The clothes are 100% to blame – just about every Dior look that she’s worn has been weirdly shaped, poorly-fitting, and with too many bizarre and unflattering design elements that wouldn’t work on ANYONE. I think she’s just trying to “grin and bear it” and get through the next couple of weeks, because she can’t really do anything else until her contract is up.

      • madge

just like katniss on the victory tour …

        • Kristin McNamara

Ah, so true! Great parallel. I’m blitz-rereading the book right now to remind myself what the heck even happened in this book before seeing the movie. It’s my third time reading it, and I can’t believe how hooked I get every damn time!

  • sfo2kids

I second getting a lining under that skirt.

  • gabbilevy

Noooo nononononono. Out. Unless she’s acting as a mosquito net for poor African children. And then it would be ok.

  • NarieSue

    nope. nyet. not. unh-unh.

    • Kristin McNamara

      But didja do it?

  • filmcricket

    Ooof, NSFW model shot.

Her head is amazing, and yes, dat ass, but this is terrible. If it were lined I could live with it, but as it is: out.

  • Erika

OUT!!!!!!! It looks like a sheet with a belt,I don’t mind ger curves showing show off girl but not with sheet.and the hair still ages her.

  • sweetlilvoice

    In, but barely.

  • annachronizm

to quote Iconapop, I DON’T CARE, I LOVE IT. IN

  • Nancer

Torn. So torn. On the one hand, the shape of this is great and she looks good in the dress. On the other – really, we have to put our lady stars in bathing suits with netting now? Because… why? I just think the whole concept of sheer over short or non-existent clothing is tacky, tacky, tacky. Shame on Dior.

    • marlie

Yep, line this baby, and most of us would be singing a completely different tune.

  • aeb1986

    Out. noooo

  • sugarkane105

I can’t help but think this is a huge misstep by her team shortly after her remarks about how disgusting it is that “young sex” sells. She doesn’t look trashy a la Miley, but it seems she’s fallen into the recent trend of wearing something that is revealing for the sake of being revealing. It doesn’t suit her, and I just get the feeling she’s uncomfortable in this get-up. We all know she deserves better at this point.

  • Judy_S

Lower-case in. It’s a silly dress but it’s not actually ugly and she is wearing it really well.

  • lehen

OUT. she looks like she is wearing my window screens.

  • Rebecca Harvey

OUT. She is too lovely for this bathing suit with a stiff fabric overlay.

  • DTLAFamilies

If the best you can say is she looks less awkward than KStew in sheer, booty-baring dresses, it’s an OUT.

    • S J

KStew looked way less awkward in her gold dress. And it had a much more opaque overlay. This is hideous.

      • DTLAFamilies

On second thought, I think you’re right, which is really saying something considering KStew’s general red carpet demeanor compared with JLaw’s.

  • Sarah

OUT OUT OUT. The fact that she DOES look like a trapeze artist caught in a net (!!!!) is automatic out-y-ness. Argh, you poor girl.

  • berkeleygirl

IN! I think she’s one of the few who can pull this off. For one thing, her body is ridiculous. For another, her personality is so strong that the dress doesn’t overwhelm her. Most of all, there is not a whiff of self-consciousness or look-at-me-itis. Sure, she knows it’s an attention-grabber, but you ultimately look at that face. If this were on Beyonce, it would be something else entirely.

  • Laylalola

OUT. Wow. I’ve been kind of neutral on her partnership with Dior but now agree that neither are getting any good publicity out of this. She’s never looked as bad as she does in these Dior things.

  • Kelly

Out. No, it’s not boring. But it IS awkward, and ultimately, imo, pretty silly-looking. And I think there are few things less elegant than visible butt-cheek in formal-wear. Plus, since this tour started, she hasn’t seemed to own any of these looks. They don’t seem integral to *her*. She’s just a paid-for body to be draped in Dior, and no one (least of all her) seems to be paying the least bit of attention to whether there’s any connection between garment and wearer. As for the hair, I just don’t think it does a thing for her beyond make her face look chipmunky, childlike, and undistinctive. Only in one photo — that one fourth from the bottom today — do I see a hint of potential: her face and hair look chic and grown-up there. But the rest of the time, she looks like a little girl playing dress-up.

  • LondonMarriott

  • Roz

Granny panties are so last year, aren’t they? OUT.

  • MoHub

That’s the fanciest beach coverup I’ve ever seen. OUT.

I love the top part, the skirt I would have loved to seen with a coloured lining underneath. Something very vibrant and cut slightly smaller than the voluminous overskirt, so you would still get the size of it.

    • sagecreek

Oh, yes That would have been a whole different dress, and most likely a stunning one.

  • sagecreek

I feel bad voting her out, because I do think she’s at the mercy of the Dior Machine at this point, but this is indeed ridiculous. OUT.

    • Blair Sylvester

I can’t believe her or her people can’t pull rank and say this girl just won an oscar and is doing a pole dance for one of the most anticipated films of the year . She is having a huge moment and I can’t believe she doesn’t have pull

      • sagecreek

Oh, I don’t disagree one bit, but I don’t understand that biz. She just looks so not on board, you know?

        • Blair Sylvester

Even with an oscar it’s hard to act like she is into this Kardashian Kollection Kast off

  • Elizabeth Neale

I think she’s owning this ridiculous ensemble. IN.

  • Out. This is not her schtick. At all. She’s adorable and I adore her hair cut and I love that she takes fashion risks. But she looks a little like Sharon Stone and Kristen Stewart had a baby and that’s just not her. She’s wicked better than that.

  • Emily Dagger

Out, out, out. Simultaneously ridiculous and done-to-death. Yes, actresses, we’ve all seen your granny panties. You’re *so* edgy. In fact, every one of you who’s done this for the last three years or so is even edgier than the one who did it six days earlier. Now be a dear and scoot, please? Thanks.

    • Sabin

      Awesome, thank you.

  • Jaeda Laurez

I am SO TORN. I love the overlay pattern. I hate the fact that i looks like it totally does not go with that body suit underneath, no matter WHAT belt you throw on top. I get why she cut the hair (she said color damage), but that wasn’t the haircut to get. OUT.

  • Watts

OUT. This is a drastic measure to get people talking about something other than your haircut.

  • thecitysleeps

IN. I hate these dresses on basically everyone, but she’s so elegant, she pulls it off. And it’s a big fuck you to all the haters saying she’s fat when in actual fact she’s not and looks amazing. Dat ass. Those thighs, indeed.

Love the hair and make up too.

    • gigi kennedy

exactly! i deplore this style on anyone else, but here, for this venue on JLaw? love it

    • Alloy Jane

Is that why she’s wearing this? People call her fat? That is crazy. But she could literally tell them “fuck you” while wearing an American Apparel leotard and shaking her ass at them and STILL look less ridiculous than she does here. I wish she would because I can dig that, but I can’t with these gawdawful Dior dresses. I’m starting to hate the brand and even Natalie Portman’s stylelessness could not make me hate Dior.

  • slizzy

I hate the sheer-over-undies trend as much as the next BK, but I am not minding this at all. She looks happy and is selling it. A trapeze artist caught in her own net totally describes it, LOL.

  • LeelaST

OUT. At least she wore an Esther Williams’ swimsuit underneath.

  • allisankelly

OUT. The top of the dress has a lot of potential. Honestly, Dior. What are you doing? Her hair looks cute.

  • another_laura

I’m giving it an “In” – It is ridiculous, but …

I actually like the pattern in that sheer fabric (at least it’s not spangled!!), it has a defined shape, she’s not a stick insect and her hair and makeup look really good.

Okay, it’s a low bar, but still. Oh yes, In.

  • Angela_the_Librarian

Out. I think the design inspiration must have been what would a normal dress look like using really weak xray specs.

  • Judy_J

OUT. I love the short haircut, though. Has Mylie Cyrus acquired the runway version yet?

  • kayleymaybe

I love her, but OUT. If the skirt wasn’t see-through it may have worked since her top half looks good…

  • AwwwTrouble

What the hell is going on over at Dior? OUT.

  • melanie0866

OUT. I’m also done with granny panties. It would be a huge IN if the skirt were lined, because the silhouette is beautiful.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Out. She’s starting to morph into Miley.

  • Kayemwhy yo

Out! She looks like a cross between as you say a trapeze artist and a lady wrestler caught in a net.

  • Asharah

I want to like it. It’s daring and bold, but it’s NOT working for Jen. Maybe someone else could pull it off, but not her. Girl needs to fire her stylists. Now. So few of her Catching Fire red carpet dresses worked for her at all… especially when compared to her Hunger Games dresses (the gold Prabal Gurung!). And I actually like the short hair when it’s styled right, too, but overall it’s making her look older in a matronly way… but maybe she wants that?

  • Jumpingjacks

I wonder what the material is they knit that dress with.. it seems to hold it’s shape well

  • giddypony

Dear fucking god. Awful, just awful.

  • PeggyOC

Out. It is everything awkward. Shudder. Why is Dior determined to make this hot young woman look like a hot mess?

  • Adriana

I like the shape and actually don’t mind the sheer dress over bustier, in theory. BUT the fabric of the sheer dress looks like something you’d get at a hardware store. (Trampoline netting? Woven seat belts? Something.) It’s enough to call it an OUT in any case.

  • gayle

You are better than this Jennifer!

  • Latin Buddy

Awful. Seriously, you guys were spot on when you said it’s mutual assured destruction (for her and the Dior brand). I can’t seen this much of a bad pairing since Karl Lagerfeld confused Blake Lively for a twink…with taste

  • NDC_IPCentral

FortheluvaPete. What are Ms. Lawrence, her public relations team, her stylists and the deluded at Dior thinking? Nothing rational, that’s for sure.

  • MilaXX

I like it. The hair and makeup looks better than it has the entire pole dance. The dress or sheer curtain is somehow working for me. I’ve decided that it feels very Capitol Couture to me and somehow works. IN!

    • Sam Erin

“Capital Couture”…i think this is an excellent point. This is the stage of the story where Katniss is forced to present a more Capital-esq persona….which really doesn’t suit her character. So, maybe they’re dressing her that way? In beautiful clothes but ones that really just don’t fit the JLaw we love. (still voting ‘out’ but i think you’ve made an excellent observation!)

  • NCMama

IN!! It’s bold and beautiful, and she’s got the gams to pull it off!

  • Town

I’m going to say “In”. For some reason it doesn’t look trashy on her. If Miley wore it or Selena G. wore it, I’d roll my eyes.

  • Lorelei_D

OUT. A pretty shape, but just silly. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

  • Lolo Andre

Sheer over granny panties?! icu gurl trying to pull a K-Stew

  • murt

OUT – that looks embarrassingly bad…. I hate the hair and makeup too.

  • mjude

when I saw a small picture earlier today I didn’t realize it was sheer. I am having a hard time with this cause she looks so pretty (hair/makeup) but I am so over sheer……OUT

  • schadenfreudelicious

    Another Dior debacle, painfully OUT

  • Mary229

Out. I hate that she wore this. I hate that it reminds me of every other desperate looking outfit from the MTV crowd. She didnt need this to get attention.

  • Laura Renee

IN. I think she rocks it, and her hair and face are gorgeous.

  • Call me Bee

Oh brother. Either someone at Dior is nuts for making this…oh I take that back. It’s a dramatic runway statement piece. That should never see the light of day on a real person. OUT.

  • Maluca

I’m gonna give her the IN cause she’s not a stick figure and she’s not ashamed to flaunt it!

  • NBG

I get the feeling they are sending her all the Dior items Natalie Portman refuses to wear.

  • Jess Collett

There’s something rather self-reference-y Capitol style about this that means I can’t completely hate it, even though I probably should.

  • estella_nyc

JLaw, you’re breaking my heart – OUT.

  • marlie

Her hair and makeup look good, but I just can’t with that… dress. But at least she’s wearing the bustier part, rather than going completely topless, like the model.

  • HobbitGirl

It’s interesting, and it shows off her KILLA but also healthy-looking legs, but I hate the visible undercheek. She really does not look comfortable in Dior, does she?

  • 8daysaweek

OUT, emphatically. At first, I could only see from the belt up and I was pleasantly surprised because I haven’t been feeling her look this pole dance. Then I scrolled down and it all went to hell.

  • YoungSally

Amazing textile and I thank her for having the presence of mind not to flash her boobs like the model. Just a little less sheer would help — a crisp organza maybe.

  • JanieS

Her hair and makeup look good. The dress is riDONKulous.

  • krelnick

Quoth the Fug Girls: “In case you ever wondered what Jennifer Lawrence would look like wearing a screen door.” As far OUT as you can go without coming in again.

  • Glam Dixie

The outfit is ridiculous, but my god her body looks slammin’ in it. So lower case, reluctant in? It’s so hard, Uncles, so hard.

  • Ashley Ellen Wilson

OUT. The poor girl. She’s gotta know that contract was the worst decision.

  • carrie

I’m still not over her hair. Hate it.

  • mmebam

Lord, we need to free Jinger (from the Duggers) AND Jennifer (from Dior)… #Out

  • Garcia Loca

Fug Girls would have probably categorized this under “scrolldown fug”. The top half is inoffensive despite sheer overlay, because at least it’s a graphic pattern and not a figure skating costume netting. But the skirt should be cut into one thousand pieces, doused in lighter fluid and thrown on a pyre, and promptly replaced with a sassy pant.

  • tereliz

Gonna have to say in. Yes, I hate this trend, but this iteration of it at least looks fashionable and kind of chic. If the skirt was lined we wouldn’t be having this discussion, and it certainly wouldn’t have made the same statement. The styling is nice, at least.

  • bellafigura1

A tiny in because she obviously looked in the mirror and said, Thighs, bitches! And I love that. But OUT because it’s a FMO dress, and she is not that, and that is why I lurve her.

  • Mori Rene

sorry JLaw, but OUT. 🙁 she looks cute and happy but… i mean at least she didnt go with the nipples version? yeah?

  • gigi kennedy

IN. she looks fierce and she knows it. you go JLaw!!

  • bookish

  • E Smith

OUT! She’s gorgeous, but that’s not her look.

  • Tatiana Luján

Out. It would be in if she were wearing a better undergarment

  • thepoindextress

She looks so much like Penny Priddy these days.

  • AC Simons

Out!!! Please, I don’t want to see your asscheeks.

  • BayTampaBay

    OUT! Her legs look fat!

  • Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

My dear Jennifer, someone in Dior hates you with passion.

  • Snailstsichr

OUT and why does Dior hate her??

  • Slanted & Enchanted

OUT. I want to like it, I kinda like the shape on her and I’m not averse to sheer dresses over bodysuits, but…that fabric reminds me of mesh lawn chair fabric.

  • Lola Channing

She’s 22, has a great figure, is a sweet girl, so in. I just disapprove when skanks get dressed up like this.

  • Kate4queen

It’s just so not her. Out. Sorry.

  • kittentoes

Out. She looks like a form for the Rose Bowl parade, just waiting to get Elmer’s glue and mache rose petals.

  • Synnae

Out. If only because it made me utter the words Ass Cheek and Dior in one sentence. This is Dior for f*cks sake…

PS: Happy to see that she finally figured out her hair and her make up though.

  • MannahattaMamma

say it with me, Jennifer: Just because you CAN doesn’t mean you SHOULD.

  • Miss_Led

    Out. *yikes*

  • Make it die, make it die, kill it with fire! OUT! This Dior situation is officially out of hand.

    • marlie

NOW? It’s been out of hand for weeks now. 😉

      • I’ve been in denial, because J-Law is my best friend that I’ve never met. Seriously, though, she should slap her stylist. And her agent who set up this agreement. And Raf Simons.

  • mhlmh

IN. She looks gorgeous despite the dress.

  • Everything in me wants to hate it, but I kind of love it. IN.

  • Goldfish Venom

IN. I absolutely love this. So cool and sci-fi and just fun.

  • housefulofboys

    Holy Cow. Out.

  • Sam Erin

    OUT. 1000x out.

  • theblondette

OUT! This is so awful. She needs to stop wearing Dior. Ugh. So many bad JLaw outfits lately.

  • Rebekah B

    Love her, hate this. Out.

  • Carla_Charlton

OUT OUT OUT. Jeez Louise, that’s awful. That see-through skirt look is terrible for anyone, but so disappointing for that to be the choice on this particular woman for this particular occasion — makes it a SUPER out.

  • MaggieMae

Out. Line the skirt and we’ll talk.

  • GorgeousThings

OUT. Raf Simons woke up from a malaria-induced nightmare and this is the result.

  • boweryboy

If she lined it from the waist down it could have been an IN. Dior is not her friend. Neither is her stylist.

  • lobsterlen

Out and Dior needs to be publicly shamed for the clothes they are forcing on this lovely young woman.

  • Richard Banger

The powers that be at Dior obviously hate her. OUT! OUT! OUT!

  • Christin Pardy-Nosenchuk

I…I…I kinda like it. Im not in love, but I don’t hate it like I thought I should. I.say….IN but just barely.

  • PostsYouCanDanceTo

    DAT ASS is in.

    DAT DRESS is out.

Can we split the difference? Probably not.

  • Jangle57

oh my God, NO NO NO NO NO NO and may I add, NO FREAKIN WAY! OUT OUT OUT

  • Emily Smith

Well at least she got to wear something up top under it, now that I’ve seen the runway version. They should have lined the skirt in some capacity, then it would have been fabulous. Can I give her a half in?

  • luludexter

Out! except for the hair and makeup, which I love.

  • stellamaris73

    Out: Raf Simons for Dior

    • decormaven

Absolutely. This girl is beautiful- she should be wearing beautiful clothes.

  • Trickytrisha

Good grief… OUT! Okay Kittens… time for a petition to Dior to let this poor waif out of her contract. They are ruining her.

  • prettybigkitty

  • slightlybitterkitten

She’s beautiful. That dress is still OUT.

  • Loramir

So VERY out. Ooohhh, that’s bad. Please put your butt cheeks away. I can just roll my eyes when it’s Miley or Gaga but when it’s a talented star whom I like and thought had better taste, I get all cranky-old-lady-ish.
Her head is looking great, though, I’ll give her that. The hair is growing on me, and I love the bold and bright lipstick.

  • rkdgal

This dress is for the wrong poledance; clearly this is the Silver Linings Playbook come to horrible life. I say Silver Linings NAY-book! OUTS.

  • Kathryn Tewson

  • rkdgal

Wrong poledance, JLaw — this is clearly the Silver Linings Playbook, come to horrible life. Silver Linings NAY-book, I say!

  • bailey

  • idgiepug

SOOOOO close. The makeup is better, right? I feel like with a real dress under that trapeze net this could have been an in, but as it, it’s an OUT. I still love her, though.

  • Anna_Cecilia

    Body: Slammin’, In.

Dress: O to the U to the T.

I like her lip colour and her skin looks luminous, that’s the only thing I want back from my early ’20s. I wish I’d enjoyed it more.

  • Bethany Roullett

Sure, if you’ve got it, flaunt it, and all, but still… OUT. Sorry, girl, I still love you!

  • CatherineRhodes

    OUT!!!!!! She looks ridiculous.

  • S J

Out. Dat ass looks particularly bad in this dress. Both flat and droopy. Really, no redeeming aspects.

  • Margo750

I am forced to say . . . OUT! Jennifer Lawrence is lovely, but this is just unflattering and bad. And it’s really not her.

  • Katerina

IN!! I have a sneaking fondness for the granny-panty look, and she’s got the curvy pin-up girl figure to pull it off. I think the skirt is graceful, and she looks happy in the dress. Good for her.

  • Sly

IN, I love her to much. Also has anyone else tried to imagine her in outfits John Galliano created for Dior? I think she would look absolutely stunning.

  • OUT. This is horrifying and makes me sad. You’re way better than this, J. Law.

  • deathandthestrawberry

    Oh hell, no.

  • Kathy

OUT! That skirt is tacky, and JLaw is better than this.

  • Dreamwr8tr

It just looks like she threw a macrame dress over her 90s’ body suit/dance leotard from NY& Co because she was in a rush from practicing and the dress code said black tie. Or she’s trying to protect herself from mosquitos.
Really, you should not puzzle people when showing off chorus girl legs.

  • Joanna

If loving this is wrong, then I love being wrong!!! It is great seeing a lady with real curves work a look like this – it is very flattering, I think. And the hair is the best I’ve seen it!

  • lunchcoma

OUT. She has the body for it, but it’s still hideously ugly.

How I wish she’d signed a contract with Calvin Klein instead of Dior.

  • Alloy Jane

    O. U. T. So very OUT. Lord that thing is ridiculous. I mean, would she go to a premier in just a bustier or body suit like Gaga? Also, her Hilary hair is awful. OUT OUT OUT OUT OUT. What is she doing? Yes, someone at Dior hates her.

  • Mightiadd

This outfit is utterly ridiculous. This would be the perfect time for Jennifer Lawrence to put her foot down, throw an unforgetable, Oscar deserving, full blown prima donna, ultimate diva hissy fit and demand, contract or not, that Dior start altering and/or designing special dresses that are meant to fit and flatter HER (and that includes linings). She’s the hottest actress on the planet and she shouldn’t be the victim of some designer’s ego.

    • lunchcoma

Yes. I’m sure she likes the endorsement money, but she’s an Oscar winner who may get another nomination this year and who’s starring in one of the biggest franchises around. Is she really powerless to insist that they put a lining on the lower half of this dress and then find her some pretty vintage looks that suit her type?

      • Imasewsure

I’m guessing that she likes it (poor dear). She’s young enough to grow out of it though… The Dior folks have no excuse

        • lunchcoma

Sigh. Maybe that’s it. This one I can see a woman liking, since it at least shows off her body nicely. It’s really hard for me to believe she put on that black dress from yesterday and thought that it looked great. Then again, I think I was still coming to terms with the fact that some styles just weren’t for me when I was 23.

    • marlie

She seems like the laid-back, no drama, anti-diva type, but if there were ever a time for her to throw a hissy fit, THIS would be it.

  • OUT – but at least we don’t see her nipples.

  • SusannaGA

Horrors! Out, absolutely. Cute hair, pretty makeup, and nice earrings, though.

  • Zaftiguana

My gut says IN. Though I’m sure we can all agree that not wearing it as the model did but with the addition of pasties in the shape of the Mockingjay emblem was a huge missed opportunity.

And this is maybe the best the hair has looked.

  • At least her boobs aren’t out?!

    Nope, not enough. OUT.

  • RandiLu

Sorry, I love this, full stop. I have no clue why either, just do. In.

  • alyce1213

Very, very OUT. If the skirt were lined, it would be a WERQ.

    • Imasewsure

Exactly… what a cool fabric and shape… and then it’s sheer because? Oh yes because we are edgy and new… FUG

  • Eva_baby

    OUT damned spot, OUT!

  • SarahVN

Listen, this is not great, but I feel like it’s a costume Katniss might wear in the movie. And it’s not boring, certainly. So I vote a solid IN.

  • Sylvia

Out. The lipstick looks like the colour you’d choose from a Girls’ World styling head doll.

  • DinaSews

I’m sure I missed this discussion, but who is cutting off all these actress’ beautiful locks? I’ve only seen a shot or two where this looks good on her.

  • ballerinawithagun

OUT, but her body looks fabulous and she is doing a Vegas Showgirl Walk!

  • oklund

As a kid, I used to wrap myself in the shower curtain, pretending it was a glamorous ball gown. Dior needs to hire me, and also, OUT

    • Imasewsure

Brava…You seem to have the experience that they need for this collection… JLaw… not so much…

  • formerlyAnon

IF and ONLY IF a sheer dress can be in, she’s in. Can it? Ever?
Plus, she’s doing it for the Hunger Games franchise tour.

Extremely dubiously, and thinking that I could be shamed out of it, I’ll say in.

  • Tracy_Flick

I can’t decide. I want to say IN for how insanely gorgeous she and her figure are. But…. that dress… that leotard…. ugh. I’m starting to wonder if Dior is messing with her and she’s getting them back. “Fine then. Be that way. I’ll wear THAT ONE on the red carpet.”

  • Monabel

    Unspeakably ghastly. OUT

  • RedRaven617

Maybe it is blind love for her, but to me, it is IN.

  • Stella Zawistowski

    OH GOOD GOD NO. Out.

  • BobStPaul

This is doing neither her nor the Dior brand any favors. Out without a doubt.

  • NaNaNaNaCatgirl

I think it’s IN. It’s a nutty look, but she looks like she’s having fun. And I’m starting to love the hair.

  • Danielle West

Out. I just feel uncomfortable for her.

  • elizabethcm

Out. Absolutely. It’s tragic that the one person in the world who hates Jennifer Lawrence works at Dior. Because the head is fabulous but everything else…EESH!

  • Imasewsure

OUT but how cool would this have looked if they had just lined the fricking thing!

  • nyll18

  • BuffaloBarbara

Sorry, Tom, that’s AWKWARD and unattractive, and weirdly boring to boot.

  • Miranda

    Can it be both?

  • msdamselfly

IN Hair, makeup and smile all great. She also looks great and not the least bit self conscious in the dress. One of her best looks from this tour which has been kind of weird.

  • pookiesmom

    • pookiesmom

The sad thing is, I would kind of LOVE this if the bodysuit she’s wearing had a skirt component all the way to the floor. As is, it looks like an unwieldy bathing suit with a really impractical beach cover-up. Cringeworthy!!

      • altalinda

I was thinking that maybe cigarette long black pants would look cool under the netting.

        • pookiesmom

Hmm. I’m having trouble visualizing it, but that would definitely be interesting. It would almost make the sheer layer like a cape or a buttonless overcoat or something. I really want to see that now! Maybe you will spark the next big red carpet trend. I’d prefer it over the granny panties, for sure.

  • Dagney

In. For risk and aggressiveness. At least it’s not a white bra or “stickies” under a black shear dress.

  • tvmovielover

She does not look terrible, especially from the waist up as pointed out below but no it is weird and OUT.
Why are these silly looking dresses good runway worthy design when to most of us they are “What was she thinking?”

  • Jacqueline Wessel

Well from the waist up it’s an IN, but from the waist down it’s OUT. She does look great, but she’s wearing Kristin Stewart’s dress. Ultimately, i’m going with out.

    • Anplica Fiore

Oh, good point. Definitely KS’s dress! I do like the bodice but especially below the waist the fabric looks like window screen. Out for me too.

  • sylverlight

  • ashtangajunkie

Line the skirt and we’re in business. As it is, I want to like it and can’t. Out.

  • BrooklynBomber

Oh, crap. Thumbnail loveliness, scrolldown fug.

ETA: no, it doesn’t suit her at all. It wouldn’t suit anybody. In fact, it pisses me off!

  • bravobravp

First off….I did an audiable gasp when I saw the model version. Second, I lol’ed with your In: DAT ASS comment. Have to go with OUT though…hate from the waist down.

  • conniemd

Out. Bottoms reveal “butt fat” and it makes her look like she has thunder thighs.

  • frannyprof

In for the hair. Out for the granny panties. But at least her tits are covered.

  • Presumptuous Insect

    So out.

  • MarieLD

Oh, dear. Out. But at least it’s better than the way the model is wearing it.

  • Stella

IN. Although it would look a million times better if the skirt was lined.

  • teensmom99

Jen is going to have to stop talking about how she hates diet and exercise if she wants to wear this kind of dress.

  • decormaven

This is the definition of out.

  • MissFern

    Jenny!!!! Noooooooooooooo!!! Why??????

  • MGMcD

out. It’s more interesting than the average sheer over panties dress, but its still not very flattering. It makes her otherwise smashing figure look wide.

  • mdcoon127

  • Joanne Abrams

    That’s just nuts

  • MarieLD

Has someone redefined the word “couture”? This was hand-stitched? Custom-fitted? Wow.

    • decormaven

      I think it’s more “out-ure” now.

  • gsk241

I can’t explain why, but I like it. IN!

  • MrsDanvers

Give me sheer dress & panties any day over sheer dress with strategically placed opaque panels and no anything underneath. Maybe I’m showing my age, but that got old SO fast.

  • Sara__B

Out. But I’d like to see how it would look with a full skirt lining.

  • DeniseSchipani

Couture bathing-suit coverup? Blech. Like her hair.

  • Cynica

My EYES. Out out out. She looks like she walked through the screen door on her way to the beach.

  • ChelseaNH

She’s wearing a swimsuit and cover-up on the red carpet. Out. Although I like her hair and makeup better today.

  • CPK1

awkward!!!!!!!! Nice ass, hair and make-up but OUT

  • twocee

  • antonialee

When will granny panty die a natural death?

  • Cordelia_Gray

I like Ms. Lawrence, but that dress looks like the base of a topiary Christmas tree. She deserves much better than this.

  • Pi

So awesome and IN! On anyone else, it’s out, but she’s so cool and strong and just-doesn’t-give-a-shit that it works.

  • moxie_lady

Out. She looks so uncomfortable (understandably!).

  • brown-eyed girl

I have been waiting all day to see what TLo would say about this dress. And I’m surprised to find that I’m saying that it’s “IN.” I love her short hair and curves plus she looks like she’s having a good time. When the world is your oyster, enjoy it, I say!

  • appliquer

I actually sort of maybe like it. In for the beautiful hair and makeup!

  • Milos Mom

Out… it is not flattering below the waist. She is trying too hard. I am feeling the accessories though….

  • Eovaai

    OUT. OUT. OUT.

  • lalahartma

Out, but she _is_ working that underthingy.

  • amanda lynn

I want to say out, I want to say in. Ugh. I would LOVE the dress if there was a lining. The pattern/material is to die. The top is fabulous. I’ll go with IN because even though it’s huge, I have one quibble.

  • susan6

Ridonk. Out. Even her own photograph is doing a double take (second to last picture) and saying, “Girl, WTF?!?!”
From the waist up, it looks good, but the bottom half…..only works if you’re a model.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Oh, heavens. That is so out there is no in within a 20 mile radius.

  • barbarienne

If it weren’t sheer, it would be a great silhouette on her. I’m lukewarm on this, but I say IN.

  • Kerry McCombs

    IN. I love it.

  • E. D.

OUT, but I hate all of the “pinup bathing suit under something sheer” dresses I’ve seen on non-models.

  • jesuiskate

In! It’s bold and she’s working it.

  • brown-eyed girl

I’ve been waiting all day to hear what TLo have to say about this photo. I’m kind of surprised to find myself saying, “In!” Love her hair and her curves and her grin. When the world is your oyster, have fun with it, I say!

  • nannypoo

Well, at least you can’t see her boobies. But someone needs to save her from the House of Dior. Her moment to assert world dominance and be the Hottest Actress Alive is a fleeting one and it is being wasted with shitty clothes like this that make her look like a fool. Run, Katniss, grab a backpack and find useful supplies that will not include this hideous outfit.

  • lesmaha

I’m going to say IN. Not perfect from every turn or perspective–but of all the sheer dresses, this one works better than 95% of the others–which is to say, SHE is working it better than 95% of the others….

  • princessricky

wow, this may sound dramatic, but i have to record this for posterity: the moment i fell out of love with J. Law.

  • Jan de la Rosa

Out! There are no nipples distracting me from the ugly ness of it all. The runway model takes my in vote

  • kmk05

Dior is being ridiculous. I am quickly losing respect for the brand, but dear Santa Jesus she is actually pulling it off. I feel like she hates it, and yet if she’s going to wear it she’s going to do it properly.

I hate it too, JLaw. But I must vote you IN, just because you are carrying off this monstrosity with grace.

  • Sara Hottman

There’s a reason trapeze artists avoid the net. Girl. Out.

  • Nonmercisansfacon

Gurl, you have an Oscar and you are well-liked by the public and by your peers. No need to pull a Stewart or a Miley. OUT.

  • rbk

OUT OUT OUT. Girl needs a wig ASAP cause the Jaime Lee Curtis ‘do is not working. She looks so old…she’s only 24 ish and that hair makes her look mid-aged. Regardless of the hair….dress is horrible, fabric is ugly and the belt makes her look huge. Also, the makeup looks like she let a toddler do it. What is she thinking?

  • leftcoastpickle

NOOOOOOOO but i do love her hair

  • JulieK

I like the belt. And the earrings. That’s pretty much all I like. OUT OUT OUT.

  • ojosazules

I am so sick of this shit. Out.

  • CommentsByKatie

Maybe it’s because everything else she has been wearing lately is terrible, but I thought this was unique, beautiful, and super modern looking. I really like it! IN!

  • ampg

    What the ACTUAL FUCK.

  • altalinda

Nice legs, nicely displayed. Still, Out — this strikes me more as a dress you wear for a fashion mag editorial, not out in the “real” world.

  • Shawn EH

In! Killing it! She takes no prisoners!

  • Belvane

    Utterly OUT.

  • EEKstl

I normally H-A-T-E the panties under the sheer thing but somehow she is making this work for me. Work, not WERQ, but deserving of an IN, albeit grudgingly.

  • Isana Leshchinskaya

that’s it. i HATE raf simmons.

  • trisker

IN from me too — it’s a crazy dress but the decision to wear a strapless leotard was a good one. Hair and makeup rock.

  • crash1212

OUT. However, I’m forever grateful that she didn’t wear the model version…ahem. I love her hair and makeup. The sad thing about this is I think that dress would totally kill if the entire skirt was lined. The gray textile is beautiful and would be just as striking with black lining. I remain utterly confused by what they are doing to this poor girl at a time when she should be looking her best.

    • unbornfawn

  • Lisa_Co

Mosquito netting over a bathing suit? OUT!!!

  • Jenna Marie

    Out. Forever.

  • TaurusKW

As soon as I scrolled down and saw the skirt, I laughed in exactly the same manner as Rumpelstiltskin from Once Upon a Time.

  • unbornfawn

From the neck up – IN. The fit is perfect and the dress is dramatic even if it reads as formal swimwear. It just that it isn’t her dress..

  • CarrieBaby

Because I hate this trend so much it’s sadly gonna be an OUT. At least she wore a body suit instead of when most celebs put those granny bra and underwear sets. The material looks like its probably itchy but if she lined the dress then it would be a really boring and safe look. I’ve been so disappointed with her looks recently because her style does not fit Dior’s brand. Hair and makeup looks good though!

  • River

I…weirdly kind of love it. Daring and fun but not atrocious. Huh.

  • surfergirl70

I kind of love it, though I generally hate this kind of sheer business. IN

  • Lori

OUT. If it was lined I’m pretty sure I’d love it. As it is she’s wearing a screen door over a bathing suit. She’s terrific, but no one is terrific enough to save that The hair is cute though.

  • katiessh

OUT! seriously?! and the runway is somehow worse- who would wear that?

  • Molly Lopez

  • I think her expression of “I’m gamely trying to go along with this but boy do I feel like a jerk” says it all. No, no, a thousand times no. The people at Dior who are putting her into these getups should themselves be forced to wear them and have hundreds of slavering photographers immortalizing them on the internet. Only then will they know the ridiculous feeling. The LA premiere of her most anticipated movie role of the year, and THIS is the best a respected house of couture can do for her? God help us.
(By the way, that means I vote OUT.)

  • SorayaS

Ohhhh, a begrudging OUT. I actually think this is more of a GTNYD situation because I actually really like the dress (minus the hideous belt) but she doesn’t quite pull it off for some reason

  • alainalynn

Was anyone else reminded of Kristen Stewart when she wore the see through dress for whichever Twilight Pole Dance that was?

  • ThesisMonkey

    OUT. out out out.

  • rebeemoon

IN! At first, I was like ….? And then I was like, she looks pretty damn good. Outrageously good, in a way. Not that I’m endorsing the sheer skirt/granny panties look in general, but still . . .

  • DeTrop

I hope this look is just a passing fancy. Who thinks granny panties are a fashion item? Such a pretty lady – such a bad idea.

  • Michelle Lim

Oh lord! Ship this off to Miley please!! And still it’ll be more covered up than what she’s used to.

  • Lea Setegn

IN! I hate sheer dresses, but this one moves beautifully and she wears it well. It looked better as she walked down the red carpet than it does in still photos. (And it looks better when she smiles.) I do think the body suit could be cut better around the legs – the look from the back isn’t that great. But overall, love it!

  • 3boysful

Reminds me of cool window screening. But not as this dress.

Do you suppose these poor women ever whine “No! Not THAT! Please ! I just want to look pretty!”?

  • snarkykitten

    ooh honey. No.

  • Brittney P

OUT. Her hair is finally looking great, but the dress does not suit her at all. Love that belt though.

  • KT

I actually kind of love this, and am quite surprised by the fact that I do. Work that body, girl!

  • rondele

I don’t think the dress is all that, but she’s carrying it. I think she looks fine. IN. Hair and makeup are flawless.

  • throwaneyeonthis

Out. You need showgirl legs to make that dress work.

  • SouthernGirlRena

I like the belt, and her hair, and her eye make-up looks great. And we can’t see her boobies. Unfortunately the “dress” is so so horrible that it completely blows the good parts into outer space. OUT

  • akbruchs .

I want so badly to say “in” because I ♥ her…but even she knows it’s awkward as hell. I mean, did you see her expression in the first two frames? OUT.

  • sleepycat

I love Jenn, but this is an easy OUT. In agreement with you guys, they should take her out of Dior.

  • Sarah

OUT. Between the hair, the makeup, and the clothes, it’s like she’s being punked by her people. There is nothing flattering about any of this. Her ass looks great but I would have known that had she worn a fitted pencil skirt. I don’t need to see her lower ass cheeks, FFS!

  • Pterodactyl111

Ugh … out. It hurts. I wish the skirt had been opaque – I like the sheer top. But the bottom is too much.

  • shayna61

This is so fucking OUT it’s infuriatingly so. I’m sick of seeing women paraded around in pretend dresses that are really just excuses to make them go out in public as naked as possible without being arrested for indecency.

  • Jess White

She looks like Haute Couture Miley! This is not okay!

  • amber.

    a begrudged in

  • bxbourgie

In! The back of the bodysuit looks a little grandma panty, but I’ll ignore that. IN.

  • jilly_d

JESUS EVERLOVING CHRIST that is an OUT. Jen, your bod is slammin but that dress is fugly as shit.

  • MiriamMc75

Dear lord! OUT OUT A THOUSAND TIMES OUT!!! Ludicrous!

  • Telperion

    OUT! Def out. Uh.

  • Terri Terri

It’s crazy, but I wish I could look that great in something that crazy!

  • demidaemon

It’s probably the best Dior she’s worn on this whole poledance. That said, it is super whackadoo. The only good thing I can say is that perhaps she is trolling Dior with this whole poledance, which I definitely approve of. But, unfortunately this is OUT for me, though I do see it’s pros.

  • CT14

She’s wearing a window screen. I laughed. Not in a good way. That’s an out.

I appreciate she covered her boobies. But still out.

    Her hair finally looks cute.

  • understateddiva

In – she’s selling it for me. Shes giving enough face to justify the amount of booty we are also receiving.

  • Cat of the Canals

So very, very OUT. The skirt really needs to be lined. It’s like a Playboy Bunny “outfit” with a mosquito net draped over it.

  • roverrun

I say “In” only because I fully believe that she is going to a swim party directly afterwards and does not want to use an unclean cabana to change her clothes.

  • ShaoLinKitten

I’m still not over this haircut. Why are they trying to make her look older than her years? Is it so she can remind everyone watching this that she’s older than Katniss? I hate it. Oh wait, you asked about the dress. I hate that I can see her ass cheeks, so OUT.

  • tallgirl1204

    It’s Miley Cyrus’s dress. Out

  • Ma. Gabriella Dutari

She looks good possing with her legs crossed. But it looks very weird from the back and her ass cheeks (however fabulous) are in plain sight! OUT

  • bertkeeter

Really? Couture? What a joke… Raf Simons…please go away!

  • Lily-Rygh

    Oh, good lord. OUT.

  • Natalie Brown

In. It’s a giant fuck you to everyone in Hollywood who’s been calling her fat, and I love her for it.

    • pookiesmom

Eh. I don’t really see how a young woman with an outrageously (and objectively) hot bod leaving the house in underwear and a cover up is a fuck you to anyone who’s body shaming her. Seems more of a “Are you kidding? You’re wrong; I’m hot as fuck.” than a “Fuck you, I don’t care what you think of me.” It’s fine, I don’t blame her for it, but I don’t see it as subversive or anything. To each their own (interpretation). 🙂

ETA: Not that I’m faulting your interpretation, but I wanted to explore why my reaction was more “this is kinda sad” than “you go girl!” I tend to say “You go girl!” a lot when J. Law is concerned, so it was an odd little hiccup for me.

ETA part 2: Not that I say “You go girl” out loud, to anybody, ever. I realize that this has never been acceptable, except for a brief period, mockingly, in the 90s.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I feel as if I”m having a Henry II moment from “Becket”, except I’m screaming “Will no one rid me of these hideous granny panties and sheer skirts?”
OK-time to lie down on the fainting couch again.

    • the granny panties are all gretchen’s fault.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

        And Nina’s….

  • Sadie-Ann

At least she picked the non-boob version? I just can’t with all of this. Her outfits are making me tired.

  • the problem is she’s just not the dior type, and esp. not during this whack-a-doo yucky-boo raf simons period. her body is more dolce and gabbana, her romantic beauty could wear so many houses (herrera, cavalli, de la renta, valentino) and i could even see her in miu-miu. but this marriage is not working, and it’s so sad that it’s during a high point in her career.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Is Raf Simons on some kind of drug that is causing him to design hideous clothes? It’s not the Dior that I knew and craved.

  • Matthew Davie

I’m stunned. Granny panties look good on NO ONE. Out out out.

  • SierraDelta

There’s no way to make a rational decision about this… outfit. On the positive side, her hair and makeup look good, and she gets high fives from me for lining the top. But. The fabric looks stiff and scratchy, and it makes me wonder if it’s painful rubbing against all of that exposed skin. I’ve never personally worn a shower curtain, but I can remember airing new ones out to get rid of that distinctive plastic-y smell. Maybe she’s wearing Dior perfume to counteract that?

I’m looking for reasons to vote this (a teeny tiny lower case) “in,” but sadly I’m not finding any. Despite her luminous smile and unforced charm, JLaw gets an apologetic “out” with pangs of remorse from me…

  • Well. She looks like SHE really likes it. Looks relaxed and happy. And at least it’s young and fun, right? I say it’s a step IN the right direction.

  • PeaceBang

Oh my heavens. This is so very out. On the other hand, I would probably appreciate the photo of her looking down in a magazine editorial. But as an actual dress that one would wear in public? Horrible.

  • OpinionatedMtnGirl

OUT – she’s not showing enough confidence in it to make it work

  • GillianHolroyd

OUT. Looking forward to the Raf Simons ousting.

And this one should just gently but firmly return the check to Dior.

  • scarls17

    I like it.

  • She’s not pulling it off. She looks uncomfortable.

  • Reality TV Casting

in based on the fact that htis is a premiere of a futuristic film famous for its freaky fashions

  • cocohall

She looks like a modern warrior goddess. I love this and normally I don’t care for the granny panty thing. But I love seeing a woman who has a strong athletic body show it off. I feel like she should be on a pedestal posing with a lightening bolt clenched in her fist held high above her head. I will VANQUISH you!!!!!!

Although wouldn’t want to sit it it. Cause it does look all kinds of scratchy.

  • ankali

  • quiltrx

Overall, gotta say OUT. It’s actually an ‘in’ for me from the belt up…but WAY ‘out’ from there down.

  • stagmania

    NOPE. OUT for sure.

  • Anne

At least she’s not topless like the model!

  • wiggligirl

I say IN. Although I generally hate this kind of look, I love it on her for this event. Primarily because she wears it with such ease – she is so comfortable in her own skin. Also because there is a very retro-futuristic feel to the dress itself. It’s what we used to dream we would wear in the future. I think it works.

  • LadyLuck777

OUT. I could make some very trendy sheer curtains with that dress.

  • anneland

IN. Not really. But it’s not an out.

  • jmorino08

OUT! So much out!! That dress is ridonkulous and she knows it!

  • janierainie

Out. At least she didn’t go topless.

  • altissima

    Fabuloso. In.

  • Annarosa

    Jennifer, you have my OUT.

  • Nazzzy

  • SaoirseLee

This dress is causing me to feel like a 1950s poindexter who, via x-ray specs ordered from the back of a comic, is secretly perving on a time-travelling, Dior-New-Look-wearing Jennifer Lawrence.

  • VeryNot

For goodness sake, I feel like I’m about to see a telethon spontaneously coordinated by BKs to Free JLaw From Dior.

Could it just be she’s a 23 year old with a healthy sense of humor and actually CHOSE this dress? As refreshingly mature and down-to-earth as she is, her sense of style hasn’t ever exactly been Tildaesque. Maybe she sees herself as a Dior girl, maybe she’s enjoying showing off her body and different personas in these dresses that don’t exactly suit her. She’s got more sway then most actors in Hollywood, and she’s probably tickled that she’s the face of Dior. Stop saying, “oh poor dear, forced to wear such ugly frocks.” Give her some credit for having both agency AND 23 year old taste. At least she’s not dressing like a princess or wearing a non-stop parade of Marchesa.

Oh and this? I understand why people don’t like it, but I kind of love it on her. It’s old-school tacky. With so many starlets these days walking the red carpet in dresses made of strategically placed crotch swatches, this is an amusing take on flashing one’s body. The fit and how it shows off her body is great, and the sense of tacky fun wins me over (and I think Dior is doing something very wrong if “tacky fun” is what I’m taking away from this dress).

    • “Could it just be she’s a 23 year old with a healthy sense of humor and actually CHOSE this dress?”

No, not really. She’s an Academy Award-winning international movie star with a lucrative Dior contract promoting one of the biggest movies of her considerable career. These are not insignificant or easily ignored facts when you’re talking about her style choices.

      • VeryNot

RIght. But they’ve got dozens of dresses should could wear, and this dress could have easily been lined and no one would bat an eyelash. I’m not saying she has a lot of choices (she has to wear current Dior of course), but I think people are too quickly trying to paint her as a fashion victim of Dior, discounting the facts that she’s 23, has never set the world on fire with her style, and has never been shy about voicing her objections to the Hollywood machine.

All I’m saying is, maybe she loves the dress and thinks it’s fun and had some say in how the dress was presented (unlined). Contract or no, I find it very hard to believe a serious actress of her status and her well-known out-spoken personality would be forced to wear a see-through dress unless she herself found it appealing. “See-through dress” being the operative words. I could see Dior foisting all sorts of ugly on her, but not pushing something as risky as see-through.

        • I’m not sure anyone here is seriously claiming that she’s being forced against her will to wear dresses that she hates; just that she’s being forced by a contract to wear Dior, which doesn’t suit her.

And given what we know about her personal style, as well as her red carpet style prior to becoming the face of Dior, we don’t think she would have picked this dress – or most of the Dior dresses she’s been wearing during this promotional tour – unless she had a contract with them. It doesn’t fit her style at all.

  • Zuber

    out out out

  • catherines

  • Sam Smith

I rather like the idea of the dress and the color and shape if it were lined in gray.

  • Constant Reader

OUT. She’s got the legs for it and is pulling it off, but I refuse to support visible granny panties.

  • StarburstLady

  • iwittmann

OUT! Girl, this is SO not your dress!

  • lyssalove31

    out out OUT

  • Kent Roby

Two JLaw looks in a row that look much different in the cropped thumbnail. This just looks silly. Out (apologies to my girl, but I doubt she’ll lose sleep over this).

  • Cathy S

I’m surprised at myself, but I give it an IN. I think she looks really great. And that’s not the kind of dress I would like at all. She’s got fabulous legs.

  • knockknockknockpenny

In! Is it a knit? It looks stiff. I cant imagine its comfortable at all.

  • bluefish

IN! She looks great. And perfect given the film and it’s vibe. It’s also interesting to see TLo comments section turn into master classroom for discussion of all manner of things … Amusing and fun.
She’s a beautiful woman in the ONLY granny pants outfit I’ve ever liked. The outside shell is amazingly beautiful — gorgeous fabric and I love her hair and make-up. Hunger Granny Pants!

  • Danielle

I’ll give her an IN because her nipples are covered.

  • siriuslover

IN!! However, I am mad at Dior right now. Just sayin’

  • Sunshine16

Although I detest the whole sheer dress & panties trend, she looks amazing enough to be IN! The bodysuit is super flattering & her shoes are good. Loving this hair & makeup.

  • girlsaturday

Ten bucks says that somewhere Miley Cyrus is yelling at someone because JLaw wore that dress with the lining on top before Whihanna was able to wear that dress without it.

  • Andrea Lentz

I say IN! She is making it work amazingly well and it’s by far the best thing she has worn to these premieres.

  • Lelia Mae

This reminded me of Kristen Stewart’s last Twilight red carpter outfits… remember the gold sheer ass dress? Then that made me sad because I love me some JLaw and she is way above this.

  • DinahR

OUT – Yikes. And more OUT. I love Jennifer but this dress is just bad. Not her fault cuz she’s working what there is, there is just too much mess here to work with.

Also, it’s sad because there are soooo many other gorgeous clothes she’d be amazing in.

  • DagnyReardon

Out. This is a costume, not a dress. I still love her though.

  • Erica_Vuitton

Uncles, she’s wearing a bathsuit, a weight belt and screen door netting with Miley’s hair and makeup. Its not even a question this is OUT OUT OUT. Jen… this is so laughably far away from the GND/ approachable persona you put out its getting rediculous. Fire Dior, fire Rachel and come back to us in all your normal chick glory. Please. Please!!

  • Louise Bryan

Hmm. This feels more like a Katniss costume than a JL dress. I’m just glad the granny panties became a strapless bathing suit. Since this is a pole dance event, I give it an IN.

  • Caaro3

    It’a not even a dress; it’s a bathing suit and a . . .a . . . THING! Out

  • Bernadette

    I just can’t, no, “out”…

  • sweet_potato

IN, I love it, bold and daring!

  • Jacob Bowen

OUUUUUTTTTT! And in the first picture her hair looks AWFUL! The WORST thing about this whole pole dance is that US Weekly just posted all of the recent photos of her in their magazine with commentary about how “fashionable” and “chic” she looked. They praised her left and right. UGH. No.

  • guest2visits

Have to say she’s making a totally awful trend look good. Jennifer manages to take it classic, with that 50s bathing suit silhouette under the ‘net’ – so much better than the ridiculous edition the model is wearing. It would be better if it was lined in black underneath the skirt, but still an IN.

  • CT14

Maybe if the entire top was lined in black. As is, it looks like she’s wearing a swimsuit under a window screen.

  • BrookeNR

Oh come on. It’s the premiere of the HUNGER GAMES. IN! Also obsessed with the picture of her looking down. LEGS.

  • Nicole

hey atleast she covered some more than what was on the runway
