GTNYD: Jena Malone in Mikael D on Jimmy Fallon

Posted on November 18, 2013

Sweetie, it takes a special kind of woman to work a difficult dress like this, and we’re afraid you’re not that woman.

“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” star Jena Malone makes an appearance on the “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” show in a Miakel D black crepe dress with cut-outs from spring 2014 collection.

Mikael Spring 2014 Collection

Oh, Girl. That is so Not Your Dress.

She looks embarrassed and uncomfortable in it. Look at how her arms are clamped to her sides in most shots. Her instincts to cover up are right in this case, because the design of this dress is too distracting for TV and too unflattering once she sits down – all that wrinkling illusion netting.

Sweetie, pack this up and send it off to someone with more attitude than you. If you want a LBD, then pick  a less tricky one next time.

Wish she would have paired a different black dress it with white shoes. (Sorry, I’m obsessed!)

    • Danielle

You can almost pinpoint her moment of regret stepping onto the stage.

      • HomeOfficeGirl

Yes, poor thing. Then Fallon makes her do tricks. (I love him! But you gotta be prepared.. and this girl got no help here.)

        • MilaXX

That’s really on her handlers. Fallon ALWAYS plays a game and they are often sillier and messier than this.

        • http://www.GiftedCollector.com/ The Gifted Collector

Aside from the fact that she does not have the attitude to carry off this dress, it was certainly not designed for parlor tricks.

    • Zuber

Its a shame because I like the dress for being edgy and creative but she is almost ruining it.

    • Mary Lauer

Love the shoes tho. Great gunmetal grey!

    • llism

She actually looks uncomfortable in most all her dresses, so that’s nothing new. Girl can NOT pose to save her life.

      • llism

Or maybe it’s because most all her dresses are regrettable. :-)

Well, can we assume that this means she doesn’t have the confident lady balls to portray Johanna?

Never before, has the active promoting of a movie, driven me so far in the other direction from excited anticipation, towards cautious dread.

      • Carina

No, don’t assume that. She was amazing as Johanna, I dare to say she was one of the best parts in the movie, trust me. Everybody loved her scenes, I can’t think of anyone who could have portrayed Johanna better.

        • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

What is this? You have seen it?
Well, thank you for restoring my faith.

          • Carina

Yes, I’ve seen it twice already. It premiered here in Brazil last friday

      • fursa_saida

I haven’t seen her in anything recently, but she did some really great work a few years ago and I have a fair amount of faith in her acting ability, if not her fashion choices. When I heard she’d been cast I was pretty happy.

      • Violina23

It is doing amazing on rottentomatoes…. I’m finding myself eager to see it. I can believe her having Johanna’s attitude, I just pictured a physically larger woman.

As for the dress… Could be worse. I can’t unsee the most recent post of Jennifer Lawrence in the black Dior…

    • Karen Belgrad

Based on the photograph of the model, this is Mena Suvari’s dress in 1999… looks just like her!

    • SewingSiren

Another dress that requires kaleidoscope glasses, beaded turban, and fright wig. Unfortunately Jena failed to deliver.

    • MilaXX

I think the whole look was not in her wheelhouse. She kicked those pumps off and looked a thousand time more comfortable. I think this is a time where it would have been better if she came out in skinny jeans and flats.

    • sojourneryouth

Yeah, she’s hunching up and stiff in all the photos, so even she knows this is not her dress. Her hands are glued to her thighs as she’s walking out. Seems like she would have vetoed this one when her stylist showed it to her. Too bad she forced the funk, because it is a great dress.

    • Lolo Andre

Uggh such a waste on her

    • mjude

      poor thing

    • Verascity

That’s a shame, because that dress on its own is amazing.

    • Lolo Andre

This dress is for Rosie Huntington and her alone

    • alyce1213

The shoes are very nice. I hate this dress, I don’t think anyone would look good with all those tacky net inserts/black cutouts, whatever. It’s bad.

    • RedRaven617

All these dresses with the cut outs and illusion netting just don’t seem to work for anyone if you can’t stand perfectly still. The second anyone moves, it is just … just not good.

      • marlie

Yep, print photography and editorials ONLY.

    • lunchcoma

That’s kind of sad, because she actually has the right body type for it. It’s the hunching and the lack of confidence that tank this look.

    • Tatiana Luján

That is not a sitting down dress.

    • jtabz

From illusion netting to shattered illusion netting!
      It hurts me.

    • Jessica Freeman

It is really not a sit down dress at all…I think on the RC she could have pulled it off…but here…NO

    • JasmineAM

      Send this dress to Lupita!

      • conniemd

I also thought of Lupita when I saw this dress. Or a woman (not a girl) like Nicole Kidman or Charlize Theron.

    • Henry Maler

On a happier note, are we all super pumped for Catching Fire?

      • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Trying to bribe my stepkids into waiting until they are home for Tgiving, so we can all go together like we did for Hunger Games.

        • Henry Maler

I know how you feel. My family’s seeing it on opening night but I’m stuck in finals week for school.

      • gabbilevy

        So. Pumped.

(Got my tix to a midnight showing with reserved seats… squeeeee Thursday can’t come soon enough)

      • fursa_saida

P U M P E D. I have to figure out when I can get my mom to go with me. (I made her read the books, so it’s sort of required now that I drag her to the movies too.)

    • decormaven

The body language tells it all. Stylist, let your client walk around, sit down, bend, lift her arms, etc. while selecting a look. If she’s not comfortable doing these things while she’s in front of the mirror, she dang sure isn’t going to be relaxed in front of a live audience and the television camera. Chalk up another stylist fail.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

She should play KStew’s sister in something.

      • http://www.what-the-frock.com Dana WhatTheFrock

Weirdly, I was thinking that Kstew might rock this dress.

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I think she would definitely wear it better!

    • kirkyo

Dress aside, she is so cute.

    • Stella Zawistowski

Is today Illusion Netting Monday? Please, let this not be A Thing.

    • Sam Erin

send it off to stacy keibler and call it a day, sista.

    • sfo2kids

Bring on the Catching Fire pole dance pictures!!!

    • jilly_d

Her body actually looks really hot in this. Shame about the (lack of) confidence.

    • another_laura

      Oh GAWD no.

    • CT14

This is not a sitting down dress.

I’m not sure it’s a standing still dress either.

It may be a model-walking-the-runway-ONLY dress.

    • Trickytrisha

That’s a femme fatale dress. She’s not. But the shoes are nice.

      • Anplica Fiore

        Killa shoes!

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

That is not a sitting down dress for anyone.

    • sagecreek

Good God, I hope the cut-outs trend ends soon.

Can you picture Audrey Hepburn in this dress? No, you cannot. Nuff said.

      • alyce1213

“Can you picture Audrey Hepburn in this dress? No, you cannot. Nuff said.”
        Words to live by.

    • JDreesen

      this is Demi Moore’s dress.

    • PeaceBang

I have a soft spot for her because she has grown up in the spotlight and managed to become a lovely young lady who occasionally wears bizarrely not-your-dress dresses, but is otherwise put together and mature. And I love the hair and make-up.

    • bertkeeter

Looks like someone used a giant magic marker and drew all over her body! Less shapes would have been better…

    • MGMcD

Pack it up and send it to Charlize.

    • quiltrx

Way too complex, especially as a sitting-down dress. Plus, if you’re going to play Jenga on your head, you’re too sweet and not a big enough bitch for this dress. :)

    • Gatto Nero

Horrible. Looks like she ran into a maniac with a machete in the alley right before the show.

    • Airkisses

      This is Milla Jovovich’s dress!

    • GTrain

      good lord, what a mess

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I do love the shoes the model is wearing with the dress. Absolutely perfect pairing!

    • HVM

      Victoria Beckham would WERQ this.

    • sunflower

Really odd choice for a talk show. I don’t know if it would have been so bad on her if she’d worn it on the RC

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Yikes, that doesn’t look like anyone’s dress! Not even the model!

    • Michelle Gennari

This is the girl I always confuse with Kristen Twilight (don’t remember her name, sorry). Interesting dress… maybe a little too old for her?

    • Alloy Jane

Love the dress and the shoes the model is wearing. No idea who this kid is but I feel bad that she had to be in this dress on live(ish) tv. Maybe she should’ve worn a cardigan to make her feel better. Ah well. I agree with whoever said this should be on Charlize.
