Elizabeth Banks in Versace at the “Catching Fire” LA Premiere

Posted on November 19, 2013

Yesterday we said we liked Lizzie’s style, because she doesn’t just rest on pretty, but tries to slightly push the envelope as to what’s expected on the red carpet. And here she is. Resting on pretty.

Elizabeth Banks attends the premiere of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” in Los Angeles in a Versace gown accessorized with jewelry by Melinda Maria and Jennifer Fisher.

But hey, there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s more important to us that she occasionally steps outside the standard pretty zone for a stroll. But if she wants to put on a gorgeous gown in a stunningly rich color that you don’t often see on red carpets, who are we to complain? We think she looks pretty amazing here.

She didn’t get the coveted International WERQ Award, however, for two reasons. The first, because it’s giving her a slight pooch when she turns to the side, and it seems to frame her butt a little oddly. We shouldn’t be seeing puckery seams right on your crack. Fashion rule.

And the second reason we can’t call this perfect and give it snaps is because that’s some seriously helmet-y hair. We have this overwhelming urge to touch it, just to see how stiff it is. We suspect if you poured a glass of water on her head, it would bead and roll right off it.

The color is fabulous on her but she needs a stronger lip.

I feel like I say “needs a stronger lip” as often as the Fug Girls say “needs a bracelet.”

      • sagecreek

That’s okay, I practically have a macro for “stand up straight!”

        • lunchcoma

I feel like mine is, “Shave! Button your collar! Press your pants!”

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

        But it does also NAB.

        • EveEve

Bracelet, necklace…Are they not lending out jewelry as generously as the dresses these days? And a stronger lip.

          • MilaXX

No it’s stylist again. Either the actresses are wearing ALL the rings or they’re barely wearing any jewelry.

      • marlie

I feel like a broken record saying it. But it’s the truth.

      • conniemd

I should have a macro for “I’m tired of all black, gray and/or Navy on men.”

    • Maluca

I think she looks fantastic. And guys, seriously, I love you but… A pooch? Really? If that’s a pooch then I’m afraid I’m sporting the whole litter. :(

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

We’re glad you love us, but we’re referring to the dress, not her body. Sixth picture down.

      • http://urban-gypsy.com/ Tess Danesi

Yeah, I didn’t notice it at first but after reading I went back and looked and it does make her seem like she has a little pooch. Still, other than the hair, which I hate, she looks slamming.

        • Erica

I don’t think it makes her SEEM like she has a “pooch.” I think she actually has a little one. Like most women do. Where their female internal organs are located. It’s there in every photo–I think it’s actually pretty sexy, but I’m not a good judge of that, being a straight female.

      • conniemd

I noticed that pouch in the stomach in the side view right away, it seemed odd given that the view also gave her a lot of rounded buttocks too in the same view.

    • Diego!

She looks fabulous!!! That color is really working for her! I would add her lips need some more color too. That dead pink must go now. She has been worn it for ages already!

    • sagecreek

      I love that clutch!

    • Vickiefantastico

She can’t seem to decide what to do with her head or facial expression. That awkwardness is off-putting to me. Makes it hard to focus on anything else.

      • ewes_urn_aim

She should stick with the evil sneer she’s giving in pic #7 (maybe a little more evil and sneery). It works with that va-va-voom dress/body.

    • Shannon Beamer

The internal seaming/structure of this gown is all kinds of screwed up. The butt area is just egregious, and I think the “pooch” in the front is due to the same seam issue. Way to ruin an otherwise gorgeous look with poor construction. That notwithstanding, she really does look pretty.

      • 3boysful

Agree, but I also hate the uniboob-lingere construction of the bust. Doing weird things here.

        • decormaven

Yes to the construction problem in the bodice. Not doing her any favors.

    • SewingSiren

Convention hooker. Garish. Too tight across the abdomen.

    • http://dontmakeitlikeimdumb.blogspot.com/ annabelle archer

Why do I never like her makeup?
Love the idea of the dress but am having a hard time reading this with all the clashing red, pinks and oranges.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I think she deserves a bit of regular pretty after yesterday’s ostrich panniers. It’s a bit game-show-hostess which I guess is also in keeping with the character.

      • Jenna Marie

I agree. I like seeing her rest on pretty occasionally. She always feels like a breath of fresh air to me because she’ll switch between pretty and doing something different. Granted, I never totally agree with any of her choices, but it makes me like her. At least she’s trying and growing.

    • MW

I don’t know, the golden stuff reads tacky to me.

    • Linzenberg

I think it’s actually rather canny that she’s switching up to being “just pretty” at this stage of the tour. Yeah, we all want to see Effie Trinket LIVE! (which sounds like the best cabaret ever), but it would be akin to one of the Walking Dead actresses wearing Deralique on the red carpet. Elizabeth Banks can do capital (Capitol?)-F Fashion better than the average bear, but if she does it too much, and to an audience that knows her primarily as Effie, then she’s never out of character and it’s harder to appreciate and perhaps dulls the message a little of the Effie costumes.

      • ChristySchiff

This is a nice point, and I agree with you on that cabaret.

Mostly though I had to comment because I think Deralique is sadly under-represented on the red carpet.

    • Jessica Freeman

I really like this dress. My quibble is that the gold lines go over the back, this is one instance in which they should have really stopped at the side seam.

The hair really doesn’t work with the fun elements of the dress.

    • butterflysunita

Fabulous. Makes me feel sorry for Jennifer Lawrence, having to wear so many ugly Dior dresses.

      • MilaXX

I’m probably gonna be in the minority when it’s posted , but I liked the Dior she wore this time.

        • marlie

I’ll reserve judgement until I see it. ;)

          • CakesOnAPlane

ohhh just wait till you see it! It’s…something.

            • marlie

I think I saw it on the fairy blogsisters’ site and it’s a DOOZY.

    • Carla_Charlton

Her hair color is really harsh and, frankly, boring. The whole look is boring — not even close to a WERQ in my opinion.

    • Jaeda Laurez

I LOVE this. I think it makes the most of her figure- it’s also a dynamite color. But that back seam would have Nina’s face looking…displeased. But I do agree that the hair is awful, it looks stiff, like bad weave. I like the style, but somebody went IN with the hairspray.

    • MilaXX

I think she looks great, but the butt puckering bothers me more than the helmet hair. Minor quibbles, though because overall she looks pretty good.

    • Nancer

I like this, overall. I just want to point out, though, that the “lips slightly parted” thing looks funny, especially when she has the same face in each. and. every. picture!

    • Carleenml

The whacky open-mouthed mannequin pose is making it hard for me to move beyond her face.

      • RidgewayGirl

Maybe she has a cold and can’t breathe through her nose?

    • Miranda

I like a good orange dress.

    • Janet B

First glance, she looks fantastic. Second, uh, puckered fitting issues.

    • marlie

This dress is pretty amazing, despite a couple of fit issues. It’s pretty AND a little striking, which is a good combo for Elizabeth. But a stronger lip and softer hair are also called for.

    • BrooklynBomber

Soap opera gala scene costume. First, her beloved is going to surprise her with a necklace. Next, half the town will be poisoned. Or her dead husband will show up.

    • Victoria Anzalone

Yeah, other than the minor fit issues, this dress is gorgeous and she looks great in it. I love that she embraces the “girl on fire” look even more literally than the girl on fire. She deserves to look straight up smoking hot after all the –albeit awesome– ridiculousness she has to wear as Effie.

    • MissFern

Girl is tired of the pole dance. Wish I could rest on pretty as well as she does!

    • ashtangajunkie

I absolutely love this dress, but the fit issues are unfortunate.

    • formerlyAnon

Which, I guess, is why you live or die by your stylist? Because there are so many things right here, that I can’t imagine an ordinary schmo (and some of these celebs seem to still be in that sartorial category when left on their own) picking up on the flaws.

My quibble with her hair extends to include the color, which is, IMO, a big part of what pushes this into Brooklyn Bomber’s brilliant descriptor of “soap opera gala scene costume.” It’s in the range of generic soap star/news anchor blonds.

    • MzzPants

      Love the clutch.

    • Julie

She has the most enviable figure.

      • CakesOnAPlane

I KNOW. I just said, “DAAAAAAMN,” when I first saw this. Then I read the comments and had to scroll up, like, “huh? she’s not wearing jewelry?? who knew!?”

    • bertkeeter

      WERQ!

    • Joanna

I think the color is just fantastic! I love this lady – she is pretty, but she is kinda quirky, too, and her style choices highlight that trait.

    • Roz

So is “Here’s my Butt” a required pose now?

      • CakesOnAPlane

if I had her butt, I would enter every room ass-first.

    • Deedles

She’s starting to give me a borderline Angie Dickinson vibe.

    • KinoEye

Perfect, bold color for her, as opposed to that neon yellow from the other day. This is a dress that screams “Catching Fire.” But yes, Miss Thing needs some serious hair rehab. Let’s put together a care package for Lizzy, with hair masques and deep conditioners galore. It’s sad and dry. It needs our help.

    • Lori

The seaming on this dress is really strange, which keeps me from loving it and the hair and make-up are sort of tragic. The thing that’s really bugging me though is the Barbie head tilt. For me that’s the distaff version of finger guns—a dumb thing that too many stars can’t resist doing on the red carpet.

    • Kate

      CLOSE YOUR MOUTH, WOMAN.

      • Lori Wade Miller

Her mouth is open in every single picture. Who is she, Lena Dunham?

    • RoseJB

      That clutch!!
      *le sigh*

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

She looks cute. Hate the clutch.

    • Matthew Davie

A shame she’s in front of a blood-red step&repeat. Makes me wonder the celebu-stylists are deliberately kept in the dark about how the red carpet is going to be staged by the movie promoters? That dress would pop like crazy against a white or black background.

    • Robyn

I think the pooch from the side view is due to her wearing a traditional corset instead of shapewear – note the visible outline of it along her front pelvic area and her lower back. Corsets are pretty great at narrowing from the front view but often have a keel-like appearance from the side because you can’t tighten so firmly at the lower boundary without having bulging issues. I think she looks fabulous in the dress either way.

    • Not applicable

nothing wrong when you can default to ‘pretty’…. we should all be so lucky!

    • frannyprof

And, third, her posing is incredibly weird. Looks like her head is about to fall off.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I like this so much more than the McQueen. The color is great on her, and when you’ve got the body to rock Versace, do it.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

I actually loved the hair at first, then I realized that it didn’t move. This could be a great dress but it has aforementioned issues.

    • E. D.

Stronger lip and a more dramatic pair of earrings and it would be great!

    • Claudia Berry

Hair and lip are my two major complaints.

    • msdamselfly

Would’ve looked pretty with a little black shrug Like the soft lipcolor

    • Sabin

“Does this make my butt look big?”

    • LaSylphide

Pretty dress, but much too tight. Needs lip color.

    • melanie0866

I hate this. I think if you cut off the skirt it would look like a drill team outfit.

    • MannahattaMamma

that is some serious midwestern hair. now showing at in a carpool line in Des Moines.

    • kbshee

Her tilty head and trying-to-smile mouth are bothering me.

    • vahtel

That dress is gorgeous, yes, but why is she doing that thing with her mouth?

    • Richard Banger

Girl surely knows how to wear Versace

    • lunchcoma

It’s not challenging, but it’s fine.

And it’s probably easy to rest on pretty when all of your costars are fugging it up big time.

    • Tracy_Flick

Gawd, I hate the all-around thick black eyeliner trend. It makes light blue eyes look like (as my dad would say if he was even dimly aware that there was such a thing as commenting on actresses’ makeup) two pee-holes in a snowbank.

    • MarieLD

She and Julie Bowen could play sisters in a movie.

    • http://robot-heart.tumblr.com/ heartbot

I think her hair looks like that because it’s naturally curly. Really naturally curly hair almost never gets that sleek, blown out look, even if you use an entire jar of mayo on it.

    • CommentsByKatie

I wonder if they told her to tone it down because she was stealing J Law’s thunder? This is really boring, and she looks like she knows it.

    • FeminineLipstique

She rarely favors orange, doesn’t she? Can’t blame her – I do, too.

    • Mona_Visa

      Traffic cone in Xanadu.

    • HM3

Girl li serving up some FACE. Barely noticed the dress.

    • Danielle

      Dat ass.

    • LilyPad

…So she didn’t get a WERQ because her belly doesn’t look perfectly flat from a certain angle? Sorry boys. Calling BS on that one.

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

Why? Have we violated the rules of applying WERQs?

And why don’t you re-read the post? She didn’t get a WERQ because her hair is helmet-y and because THE DRESS IS STICKING OUT OVER HER STOMACH, WHICH IS NOT SOMETHING THE DRESS WAS DESIGNED TO DO, NOT A CRITICISM OF HER BODY, AND NOT A CRITICISM OF ANYONE ELSE’S BODY. THE DRESS IS TOO TIGHT ON HER AND FIT IS SOMETHING WE CRITICIZE CONSTANTLY, EVERY SINGLE DAY BUT GETS PEOPLE ALL UP IN ARMS WHEN WE ADDRESS FIT ACROSS THE STOMACH AND HIPS BECAUSE PEOPLE DON’T LIKE TO READ AND WOULD RATHER REACT NEGATIVELY TO WHAT THEY THINK WE’RE SAYING THAN WHAT WE’RE ACTUALLY SAYING AND THEN APPLY IT UNIVERSALLY ACROSS THE BOARD, AS IF NOTING THAT A DRESS DOESN’T FIT ONE PARTICULAR WOMAN ACROSS THE STOMACH IS CRITICIZING ALL WOMEN WHO DO NOT HAVE FLAT STOMACHS.

SORRY FOR THE ALL-CAPS (NOT REALLY) BUT THIS SEEMS TO BE THE ONLY WAY TO GET PEOPLE TO READ WHAT WE’RE ACTUALLY SAYING AND NOT WHAT THEY THINK WE’RE SAYING.

ALSO, MAYBE IF I REPOST WHAT I WROTE, YOU’LL READ IT THIS TIME AND SEE THAT YOUR CHARACTERIZATION OF WHAT WE WROTE IS INACCURATE TO THE POINT OF BEING FALSE:

“She didn’t get the coveted International WERQ Award, however, for two reasons.

Sorry girl, I’m calling BS on your comment.

    • just3003

Tom and Lorenzo are body snarking more and more, and they are losing me fast.
